Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Hid From Me
The words echoed through the abandoned storage facility.
Your daughter.
Not Emma.
Not Leo’s daughter.
Not the girl he had spent twelve years protecting.
Just one word.
Daughter.
But something about Martin’s voice made Emma feel there was a deeper meaning behind it.
Like he wasn’t threatening her.
Like he was reminding Leo of something.
Leo’s grip tightened around her hand.
For the first time since she had found him alive, she saw real fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
“Leo.””
Martin’s voice came again through the speaker.
“You always were sentimental.””
Leo stepped forward.
“Let them go.””
Emma looked at him.
“Let who go?””
Leo didn’t answer.
That frightened her more than anything.
Richard noticed too.
“Leo.””
The older man looked at him.
“What isn’t she supposed to know?””
Leo remained silent.
Richard’s expression changed.
“You still have secrets.””
Leo looked away.
“I have reasons.””
Emma pulled her hand away.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by people who had spent years deciding what she could handle.
Not anymore.
“No more.””
Her voice shook.
“But I’m done.””
Leo looked at her.
“Emma—”
“No.””
She looked directly at him.
“I spent twelve years believing you abandoned me.””
His face tightened.
“Then I found out you were alive.””
A pause.
“Then I found out everyone around me knew more about my life than I did.””
She looked at Richard.
“At least he admitted what he knew.””
Then Daniel.
“At least he looked ashamed.””
Finally, she looked at Leo.
“But you?””
Her voice cracked.
“You were the one person I trusted.””
Leo lowered his eyes.
“You still can.””
Emma shook her head.
“I don’t know if I can.””
Those words hurt him.
She saw it.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because this was still her father.
The man who taught her how to tie her shoes.
The man who stayed awake all night when she was sick.
The man who was now hiding something that could change everything.
Martin’s voice interrupted.
“Beautiful.””
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
“The emotional reunion.””
A pause.
“I almost forgot how much Leo loved playing the hero.””
Leo’s face hardened.
“Martin.””
“Yes?””
“You wanted me.””
Martin laughed quietly.
“No.””
Silence.
“I wanted the truth.””
Emma frowned.
“You already know everything.””
Martin answered immediately.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I know what Leo wanted people to believe.””
Emma looked at her father.
“What does that mean?””
Leo didn’t answer.
Martin continued.
“Ask him about your birth.””
The room went still.
Emma felt the air leave her lungs.
Her birth?
“What?””
Richard looked at Leo.
“Leo.””
The older man closed his eyes.
Emma stared.
“Why would he say that?””
No answer.
And somehow, that was the answer.
She stepped back.
“My birth?””
Leo finally spoke.
“Emma.””
Her heart sank.
“Tell me.””
He looked at her.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
“Soon.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Soon?””
The word echoed.
“I’m twenty-four.””
Leo looked devastated.
“I know.””
“Then tell me now.””
A long silence followed.
Then Leo sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not like the father from her memories.
Not like the man who saved Richard.
Just a tired man carrying twelve years of pain.
“Your mother and I…”
He stopped.
Emma waited.
“Your mother and I couldn’t have children.””
The words surprised her.
“What?””
“She wanted a family.””
Leo smiled sadly.
“She wanted it more than anything.””
He looked at the floor.
“Then we found you.””
Emma’s breathing changed.
“Found me?””
Leo nodded.
“You were three months old.””
She stared.
“I was adopted.””
“Yes.””
She looked away.
Why did that hurt?
Not because she was adopted.
Because she had always believed Leo chose her.
And he had.
But there was more.
“There was something unusual about your adoption.””
Emma waited.
Leo continued.
“Your biological parents weren’t unknown.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Leo looked at her.
“They were involved with the same investigation.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Investigation?””
Leo nodded.
“Your parents discovered the network before I did.””
Emma felt dizzy.
“My parents?””
Her mother.
Her father.
The people she barely remembered.
“They tried to expose it.””
Leo’s voice became quiet.
“And they failed.””
She swallowed.
“What happened to them?””
Leo looked at Richard.
Then back at her.
“They were killed.””
The room went completely silent.
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
She backed away.
“My mother died because she was sick.””
Leo looked broken.
“That’s what I wanted you to believe.””
The truth hurt more than the lie.
Emma covered her mouth.
“So everything…”
Her voice trembled.
“My whole life?””
Leo stepped closer.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Never say that.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
He didn’t deny it.
“But loving you was never a lie.””
Tears filled her eyes.
Because she believed him.
And that made everything harder.
Martin’s voice returned.
“Leo.””
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
“You always struggle with this part.””
Leo looked up.
Martin continued:
“You tell yourself the truth hurts people.””
A pause.
“But the truth is, you hurt them more by hiding it.””
Richard looked at the speaker.
“Where are you?””
Martin laughed.
“Still trying to find me?””
Richard’s face changed.
“You’re nearby.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Very nearby.””
The lights flickered.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked around.
“He’s inside the building.””
Leo nodded.
“He always was.””
Emma looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, a door opened at the far end of the storage room.
A man walked in.
No mask.
No weapon.
No fear.
Martin Voss.
He looked exactly like the photographs.
Older now.
But confident.
Richard immediately moved forward.
“You.””
Martin smiled.
“Hello, old friend.””
Emma stared.
This was the man who destroyed everything.
The man behind the lies.
The man her father feared.
Martin looked at Leo.
“You look terrible.””
Leo said nothing.
Martin smiled.
“Still protecting her.””
Then he looked at Emma.
“So you finally know.””
Emma stared.
“Know what?””
Martin walked closer.
“That Leo Carter was never your adoptive father.””
The words landed like a gunshot.
Emma turned toward Leo.
“No.””
Leo looked away.
Martin smiled.
“There it is.””
The moment he wanted.
“The truth.””
Richard stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Martin ignored him.
“Ask him.””
Emma couldn’t breathe.
She looked at Leo.
“Dad.””
The word came out weak.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Leo didn’t answer.
That was the worst possible answer.
Emma felt her heart breaking.
Martin continued.
“You were never adopted by Leo.””
A pause.
“You were his biological daughter.””
The room went silent.
Emma stared.
“What?””
Leo finally looked at her.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The world shifted.
Martin smiled.
“Your mother was pregnant when she died.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
Leo nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you hid it?””
Leo whispered:
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer broke her.
“Because if they knew you were my daughter…”
He looked at Martin.
“…you would have been the next target.””
Martin smiled.
“Exactly.””
Emma looked at him.
“You knew?””
Martin nodded.
“I knew before Leo did.””
Her blood went cold.
“Why?””
Martin stepped closer.
“Because I was there when you were born.””
Everyone froze.
Richard stared.
“No.””
Martin smiled.
“Yes.””
Emma looked at Leo.
Then Martin.
“What are you saying?””
Martin looked directly at her.
“I’m saying the reason your father spent twelve years hiding…”
He paused.
“…was because the person who destroyed your family wasn’t hunting you.””
A silence.
“They were protecting you from me.””
Emma felt sick.
Because for the first time…
She understood.
Martin wasn’t here because he wanted revenge.
He was here because he knew something about her that even Leo had hidden.
Something about the night she was born.
Something that connected them all.
Martin reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
Emma recognized it immediately.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Her heart stopped.
“The letter Daniel failed to give you.””
Daniel looked horrified.
Martin held it out.
“Inside is the truth your father never wanted you to read.””
Emma stared at the envelope.
Then at Leo.
“Is he lying?””
Leo looked at the letter.
And for the first time…
He didn’t say no.
He only whispered:
“Emma…”
A pause.
“I was trying to protect you from the truth.””
Her fingers trembled.
She took the envelope.
And before she opened it, Martin said one final thing:
“After you read that letter, you’ll understand why Leo didn’t just hide you from me.””
May you like
He smiled.
“You’ll understand why he hid you from yourself.””
