Amused

Chapter 2: The Stranger Who Knew My Father

The stranger stood beneath the ballroom lights like he belonged there.

That was the first thing Emma noticed.

Everyone else in the room looked nervous.

Executives whispered behind their glasses. Guests moved away slowly, pretending not to stare. Security guards watched the man carefully, their hands hovering near their radios.

But the stranger didn’t seem bothered.

He simply looked at Richard Cole.

And Richard looked like he had seen a ghost.

Emma’s fingers remained frozen around the old envelope.

“Who is he?”” she asked quietly.

Richard didn’t answer.

The man took another step forward.

He was older, maybe in his late fifties. His dark suit was simple compared to the expensive designer clothes surrounding him. His gray hair was neatly combed back, and there was something familiar about his eyes.

Not familiar like she had seen him before.

Familiar like she had seen that same sadness in someone else.

In Leo.

The stranger stopped a few feet away.

“Richard,” he said.

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man gave a small, humorless smile.

“That’s what you said twelve years ago.””

Emma looked between them.

Twelve years ago.

That phrase again.

Everyone kept talking about the same year.

The same night.

The same secret.

“What is going on?”” Emma asked.

Neither man answered.

The stranger looked at her instead.

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You must be Emma.””

Her stomach dropped.

“How do you know my name?””

Richard immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t talk to her.””

The stranger raised his hands slightly.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

“You already hurt enough people.””

A silence fell over the room.

Emma looked at Richard.

She had never seen him like this.

This wasn’t the confident businessman who negotiated billion-dollar deals.

This was a man standing in front of a memory he was terrified to face.

The stranger glanced at the envelope in Emma’s hand.

“So he finally gave it to you.””

Emma looked down.

“You know about this?””

The man nodded slowly.

“I helped Leo write it.””

The words hit her harder than she expected.

“You knew my father?””

A flicker of pain crossed his face.

“Yes.””

“How?””

The stranger looked at Richard.

Then back at Emma.

“Because Leo saved both of us.””

Richard’s voice turned cold.

“Enough.””

The stranger ignored him.

“My name is Daniel Hayes.””

Emma waited.

The name meant nothing to her.

But it clearly meant something to Richard.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Daniel Hayes was supposed to be dead.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Emma’s heart raced.

Dead?

Another person connected to Leo?

Daniel gave a tired smile.

“People believed a lot of things that night.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You disappeared.””

“I had to.””

“You left him.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Emma looked at Richard.

“Left who?””

Neither man responded.

Her patience broke.

“No.””

Her voice echoed louder than she intended.

“I’m done standing here while everyone talks around me like I’m not involved.””

The guests looked at her.

But Emma didn’t care anymore.

“My father raised me for twenty years. He taught me everything I know. He was the only family I had.””

She looked at Richard.

“You knew him.””

Then at Daniel.

“You knew him.””

Her grip tightened around the envelope.

“And somehow, both of you know things about him that I don’t.””

Nobody spoke.

“So someone is going to explain.””

For the first time that night, Richard seemed to understand something.

Emma wasn’t the scared waitress they had tried to remove from the room.

She was Leo’s daughter.

And Leo had raised someone who didn’t run from the truth.

Richard slowly nodded.

“You’re right.””

He turned toward the guests.

“Everyone leave.””

The room erupted.

“But Richard—”

“Now.””

The authority in his voice returned.

Within minutes, the celebration that had been filled with music and laughter became empty.

The guests left whispering.

The cameras stopped recording.

The ballroom doors closed.

Only four people remained.

Emma.

Richard.

Daniel.

And twelve years of secrets.

Richard walked toward a quiet corner of the room.

“Sit down.””

Emma didn’t move.

“I’m opening that envelope first.””

Richard looked at her.

“Emma—”

“No.””

She held it tightly.

“My father left this for me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard nodded.

“Open it.””

Her hands shook as she broke the seal.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

The handwriting was instantly recognizable.

Leo’s handwriting.

Emma’s chest tightened.

She had seen those letters before.

Birthday cards.

School notes.

Little messages he left beside breakfast.

But this one felt different.

This one felt heavier.

She unfolded the paper.

And read.

Emma,

If you are reading this, then I am no longer there to explain everything myself.

Her vision blurred.

She swallowed and continued.

I know you will have questions. I know you will be angry. You have every right to be.

But there are things I kept from you because I wanted you to have a normal life.

Emma stopped.

A normal life.

That was the one thing Leo always said.

“Some people inherit money,” he used to tell her.

“Some people inherit problems.””

He always smiled after saying it.

She never understood why.

Until now.

She kept reading.

Richard Cole is not your enemy.

Emma looked up.

Richard looked away.

The letter continued.

He is the man I saved on the bridge. But he is also the reason I was forced to disappear.

Emma’s heartbeat changed.

Forced?

She continued.

There are people who would do anything to protect their secrets. Twelve years ago, Richard and I discovered something dangerous.

Something that powerful people wanted buried.

The room seemed colder.

Emma looked at Richard.

“What did you discover?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Daniel did.

“The truth about the accident.””

Emma frowned.

“My father’s accident?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Richard.

“The bridge accident.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“That wasn’t an accident.””

Emma felt a chill.

“What?””

Richard walked toward the table and placed both hands on it.

“The storm was real. The rain was real.””

He looked at her.

“But my brakes were cut before I reached the bridge.””

Emma stared.

“You mean someone tried to kill you?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“And my father found you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would that make him disappear?””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

“Because Leo saw who did it.””

Emma waited.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that silence was worse.

Daniel looked toward the closed ballroom doors.

Then lowered his voice.

“Because the person behind it wasn’t a stranger.””

Emma felt her skin go cold.

“Who was it?””

Richard looked at the old photograph still lying on the table.

Then he said something that made Emma’s entire world shift.

“It was someone inside my company.””

Emma looked at him.

“But my father wasn’t part of your company.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“He was something more dangerous.””

“What?””

Richard met her eyes.

“He was the only person who knew the evidence existed.””

The envelope slipped slightly in Emma’s hand.

“My father had evidence?””

Daniel nodded.

“He spent years protecting it.””

“From who?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard looked away.

And that was when Emma realized something.

They were both afraid.

Not of her.

Not of the past.

Of someone who was still alive.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone froze.

It came from Richard’s jacket.

He slowly pulled it out.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Richard stared at it.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” Emma asked.

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped ringing.

Then immediately started again.

This time, a message appeared.

Richard opened it.

And the color drained from his face.

Emma stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Richard didn’t respond.

“Richard?””

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

The message was only one sentence.

But it was enough to silence the room.

*Stop digging into Leo Carter’s past, or Emma will learn why her father really died.*

Emma stared at the screen.

The words blurred.

Her father.

Really died.

She looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly whispered:

“Because Leo Carter wasn’t killed in an accident.””

Emma’s breath caught.

Richard looked toward the ballroom entrance.

The doors were still closed.

But now everyone knew someone was outside.

Someone listening.

Someone who knew she was here.

Daniel stood up.

“We have to leave.””

Emma looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel’s expression was serious.

“Because whoever sent that message already knows something.””

“What?””

He looked directly at the envelope in her hand.

“They know Leo left you the last piece of evidence.””

Emma’s fingers tightened around the letter.

“What evidence?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the door.

And before opening it, he said the one thing that made Emma realize her father’s final secret was bigger than she imagined.

“Your father didn’t spend twelve years hiding from them.””

May you like

He paused.

“He spent twelve years protecting you from them.””
