Chapter 5: The Last Message From A Father Who Disappeared
For twelve years, Emma had replayed one memory over and over.
The last time she saw Leo.
A small kitchen.
A rainy evening.
A broken lamp above the table.
She remembered him smiling when she complained about the weather.
She remembered him telling her to finish her homework.
She remembered him promising that he would be home before breakfast.
Then he was gone.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
No final words.
Just an empty garage and a police officer standing at the front door.
But now, inside a hidden archive beneath a billionaire’s office, Emma was looking at the impossible.
Leo Carter was alive on a screen.
Her father was speaking to her after twelve years of silence.
The room disappeared.
The shelves.
The documents.
Richard.
Daniel.
Everything faded except the man in the video.
Leo looked older than she remembered.
There were lines around his eyes.
Gray in his hair.
A tiredness she had never seen when he was alive with her.
But it was still him.
The same gentle eyes.
The same quiet smile.
“Emma,” the recording began.
His voice broke something inside her.
She covered her mouth.
A sound escaped before she could stop it.
A small, painful breath.
“My little girl.””
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Nobody had called her that since Leo died.
Not because nobody cared.
Because nobody was him.
Leo looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m sorry.””
Emma shook her head.
“No…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“You don’t get to apologize.””
Richard looked at her.
But he didn’t interrupt.
The video continued.
“I know you’re angry.””
Leo paused.
“And you should be.””
Emma wiped her face.
“I am.””
She knew he couldn’t hear her.
But she needed to say it.
“I’m so angry.””
On the screen, Leo continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything. Every day, I wanted to sit down and explain why I had to leave.””
His eyes lowered.
“But every time I imagined you looking at me differently, I couldn’t do it.””
Emma’s chest tightened.
“You should have trusted me.””
The words came out quietly.
Daniel looked away.
Richard remained still.
Leo continued.
“I need you to understand one thing.””
His expression became serious.
“I did not leave because I wanted to.””
The room went silent.
“I left because staying would have put a target on your back.””
Emma looked at the screen.
A painful realization formed.
Her father had not abandoned her.
He had disappeared to protect her.
But the pain of losing him was still real.
Leo reached toward something off camera.
Then he placed a photograph on the table.
The same photograph Richard had shown her.
Young Leo.
Little Emma.
But this time, there was something different.
A small symbol had been marked on the back.
The same symbol from her necklace.
“That symbol is important.””
Emma looked at her necklace.
“Where did you get it?””
Leo answered as if he heard her.
“You’ve worn it since you were twelve.””
A chill moved through her.
“This necklace was not a gift.””
Leo paused.
“It was a key.””
Richard stepped closer to the screen.
“A key to what?””
Leo continued.
“Years ago, Richard and I discovered something hidden inside Cole Enterprises.””
His expression hardened.
“Something that proved certain people had been stealing from thousands of families.””
Emma listened carefully.
“The evidence was not just financial.””
Leo looked directly into the camera.
“It showed crimes.””
Nobody moved.
Richard’s face changed.
“You knew.””
Emma looked at him.
Richard looked at the screen.
Leo continued.
“We thought we could expose them.””
A sad smile appeared.
“We were wrong.””
The video flickered.
For a moment, Leo disappeared.
Then returned.
“The person behind everything wasn’t outside the company.””
Emma already knew what came next.
The same warning.
The same fear.
“Someone close.””
Leo nodded slightly.
“Someone we trusted.””
Emma looked at Richard.
Then Daniel.
Then the empty doorway.
Who could it be?
Leo continued.
“If you are seeing this, you probably already know about Richard.””
Richard stared.
“He knew.””
Emma looked at him.
Leo’s voice softened.
“Richard saved my life once.””
The billionaire looked down.
“But later, I had to save his.””
Emma frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Leo explained.
“When we found the evidence, someone tried to destroy it.””
The video showed Leo placing a small drive on the table.
“They attacked Richard’s car.””
Emma remembered the bridge story.
“They wanted him dead.””
Leo looked away.
“I knew they would come after me next.””
The screen flickered again.
Then Leo said something that made Emma freeze.
“I also knew they would come after Emma.””
Her heart stopped.
“Because the person hunting us had already met her.””
Richard looked confused.
“Met her?””
Leo nodded.
“When Emma was a child.””
Emma stared.
“No.””
She remembered the funeral.
The stranger.
The necklace.
The man who claimed Leo wanted her to have it.
Leo’s voice became quieter.
“The person who gave Emma that necklace was not my friend.””
Emma touched the pendant.
“They were sending a message.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What message?””
The video continued.
“They wanted me to know they could reach my daughter whenever they wanted.””
Emma’s breathing became uneven.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Leo looked painfully sad.
“Because you were happy.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
“You had friends.””
A small smile.
“You had dreams.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“And you had a future that did not involve my mistakes.””
Emma closed her eyes.
She remembered Leo watching her graduate.
Standing at the back of the crowd.
The proudest person there.
She remembered him saying:
“You don’t owe the world anything except becoming someone you’re proud of.””
Now she understood.
He had been preparing her.
Leo looked into the camera again.
“There is one more thing you need to know.””
The room became tense.
“The evidence was never hidden in the drive.””
Richard looked confused.
“Then what is the drive?””
Leo answered:
“It is only a map.””
Emma stared.
“A map to what?””
Leo leaned closer.
“The real evidence is hidden somewhere no one would ever search.””
The video paused.
A loading symbol appeared.
Everyone waited.
Then the final message appeared.
But this time, Leo was no longer alone.
A second person walked into the frame.
Emma froze.
Because she knew that face.
She had seen it in the ballroom.
The stranger who had been waiting outside.
Victor Hale.
In the recording, Victor looked younger.
But it was him.
Leo turned toward him.
“Are you sure this is the only way?””
Victor nodded.
“It’s the only way she survives.””
Emma stepped back.
“What?””
Richard stared at the screen.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
On the video, Leo handed Victor the necklace.
The same necklace Emma was wearing.
Victor said something too quiet for the microphone to capture.
Leo responded.
“If anything happens to me, protect her.””
Victor looked directly at the camera.
Then the video ended.
The room was silent.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Emma whispered:
“Victor was helping him.””
Daniel looked stunned.
Richard didn’t answer.
Emma turned.
“Then why did you call him dangerous?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Because after Leo disappeared…”
He stopped.
“Because Victor changed.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
The archive door slowly unlocked.
The handle moved.
Emma stepped back.
Richard reached for the security alarm.
But before he could press it, the door opened.
Victor Hale stood there.
No weapon.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
His eyes moved directly to Emma.
“I was hoping you’d never have to see that video.””
Emma stared at him.
“You knew.””
Victor nodded.
“You’ve known everything?””
“No.””
He looked at the necklace.
“I only knew enough to keep you alive.””
Emma’s voice shook.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Victor looked at Richard.
Then Daniel.
Then her.
“The truth is…”
He swallowed.
“Your father didn’t disappear because someone was hunting him.””
A pause.
“He disappeared because someone was hunting you.””
Emma felt cold.
“Who?””
Victor’s eyes filled with regret.
And when he finally answered, the name that left his mouth was the one person Emma never expected.
“The person who betrayed Leo…”
He looked at Richard.
“…was the person who raised the alarm after Leo vanished.””
Richard’s face changed.
“Victor.””
Victor stared at him.
“I’m sorry, Richard.””
Emma looked between them.
“What are you saying?””
Victor’s voice dropped.
“I’m saying the person who helped destroy your father’s life…”
May you like
He paused.
“…was someone who is still standing beside you tonight.””
