Chapter 7: The Place Where My Father Disappeared
The location on Emma’s phone was only three words.
But those three words changed everything.
*Blackwood Storage Facility.*
Richard stared at the screen like he was looking at a grave.
Emma noticed immediately.
“You’ve been there.””
It wasn’t a question.
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You’ve been there.””
His silence confirmed it.
Emma felt something heavy settle in her chest.
“Twelve years ago?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
His eyes closed briefly.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
Emma laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around the room.
“Protecting me.””
Her voice became sharper.
“But somehow, protecting me always meant lying to me.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
Victor looked at the phone.
“We need to go.””
Richard looked at him.
“No.””
Victor frowned.
“What?””
“Blackwood is exactly where they want us to go.””
Emma looked between them.
“Who?””
Richard’s expression was dark.
“Martin.””
The name felt heavier now.
Like a shadow following them.
Victor shook his head.
“Maybe.””
Richard looked at him.
“You think he sent the message?””
“I think someone wanted Emma to find that location.””
“And you think that’s safe?””
“No.””
Victor looked at Emma.
“I think it’s necessary.””
Richard immediately disagreed.
“No.””
Emma stepped forward.
“Stop deciding for me.””
Both men looked at her.
She held up the phone.
“This is about my father.””
Her voice trembled.
“But it’s also about my life.””
She looked at Richard.
“If there’s something there, I need to know.””
Richard stared at her for a long moment.
Then slowly nodded.
“Then we go together.””
Daniel remained silent.
Emma noticed.
“You’re coming too?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Do you want me to?””
She thought about it.
This man had secrets.
Everyone did.
But he was also someone who had loved Leo.
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then I’m coming.””
The drive to Blackwood took nearly two hours.
The city disappeared behind them.
Buildings became forests.
Streetlights became darkness.
Emma sat in the back seat, holding Leo’s letter in one hand and the necklace in the other.
She kept thinking about the video.
About his face.
About the way he looked at the camera like he knew he might never see her again.
She hated that he had been alone.
She hated that she had spent years thinking he chose to leave.
After an hour of silence, Richard spoke.
“Your father was different from anyone I knew.””
Emma looked up.
She wasn’t expecting him to say that.
“What do you mean?””
Richard looked out the window.
“Most people see something wrong and look away.””
A pause.
“Leo couldn’t.””
Emma smiled faintly.
“That sounds like him.””
Richard nodded.
“He once stopped a meeting with investors because he saw a janitor being treated badly.””
Emma almost smiled.
“Really?””
“He walked out of a room where people were discussing millions of dollars just to help a man who had dropped a box.””
“That sounds exactly like him.””
Richard smiled slightly.
Then the smile disappeared.
“That was why Martin hated him.””
Emma looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Leo couldn’t be controlled.””
The words stayed with her.
Finally, they reached the facility.
Blackwood Storage looked abandoned.
A massive old building surrounded by trees and rusted fences.
No lights.
No security.
Nothing.
Which somehow made it worse.
Daniel stared through the windshield.
“This place was closed years ago.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Emma looked at him.
“How did you know?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Again.
She sighed.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“I’m not asking because I’m curious.””
She pointed toward the building.
“My father came here.””
A pause.
“And you were there.””
Richard looked down.
“Yes.””
Emma opened the door.
“Then tell me before we go inside.””
Everyone stopped.
Richard stepped out slowly.
The cold night air surrounded them.
He looked at the abandoned building.
“Twelve years ago, Leo called me.””
Emma listened.
“He said he found something.””
“What?””
“He didn’t explain.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“He told me to meet him here.””
Emma felt a chill.
“What happened?””
Richard looked toward the building.
“When I arrived…”
He stopped.
“Leo was gone.””
Emma’s heart sank.
“Just gone?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you think he was dead?””
Richard’s eyes darkened.
“Because I found blood.””
Silence.
Emma looked away.
“And you never told anyone?””
“I did.””
Richard’s voice became painful.
“The police came.””
“And?””
“They found enough evidence to suggest Leo had attacked me and disappeared.””
Emma frowned.
“What?””
Richard looked at her.
“They found my fingerprints on a weapon.””
Emma froze.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
Richard looked at the building.
“Because I never touched it.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Someone framed both of them.””
Emma looked at him.
“To make it look like they fought.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Victor opened the gate.
“It was designed to destroy their reputations.””
Emma looked at him.
“Why?””
Victor stared at the building.
“Because dead heroes become legends.””
He looked at her.
“But criminals become forgotten.””
The words hurt.
Because that was exactly what happened.
For years, Leo was just a missing man.
A case file.
A memory.
Not a hero.
They walked inside.
The air smelled like dust and old metal.
Their footsteps echoed.
Richard led them deeper.
“Storage room seventeen.””
Emma followed.
The number appeared above a rusted door.
17.
Richard stopped.
His hand hovered near the handle.
Emma noticed.
“You’re scared.””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
She didn’t expect honesty.
“Why?””
He looked at the door.
“Because the last time I opened this door…”
A pause.
“I lost my best friend.””
Nobody spoke.
He opened it.
Inside was darkness.
Then Richard turned on his flashlight.
The room was empty.
Almost.
Against the back wall sat a wooden box.
Emma immediately recognized it.
Her father’s box.
She stepped forward.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“What?””
“That’s the same box.””
The one from the archive.
The one with the key.
The one Leo had left behind.
But this one was older.
More damaged.
Victor approached slowly.
“This wasn’t here before.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“I searched this room.””
“When?””
“The night Leo disappeared.””
Emma looked at the box.
“So someone put it here later.””
Daniel crouched down.
“There’s something underneath.””
He lifted the box.
A small piece of paper was hidden beneath it.
Emma took it.
The handwriting made her breath stop.
Leo’s.
Only four words.
*Don’t trust Richard Cole.*
The room went silent.
Emma looked up.
Richard looked like he had been punched.
Victor stepped back.
Daniel stared.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard whispered:
“No.””
Emma looked at him.
“My father wrote this.””
Richard shook his head.
“He wouldn’t.””
“But he did.””
Richard grabbed the paper.
His eyes moved across the words again.
Pain crossed his face.
“I don’t understand.””
Emma felt torn.
The man standing in front of her had saved her tonight.
He had shown her the truth.
But her father had left a warning.
A warning with his name.
Victor stepped closer.
“Maybe Leo discovered something about you.””
Richard looked at him.
“You think I betrayed him?””
“I think Leo had a reason for writing that.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“I would never hurt Leo.””
Emma watched him.
And the hardest part was that she believed him.
But she also believed her father.
Both couldn’t be true.
Then Daniel found something else.
A hidden compartment inside the wooden box.
He opened it.
Inside was a small recorder.
Old.
Scratched.
Still working.
Emma stared.
“Another message?””
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Leo’s voice appeared.
Everyone froze.
“If you found this…”
A pause.
“If Emma is with Richard…”
The recording stopped.
Everyone looked at Richard.
Then the audio continued.
“…then there’s something you need to know.””
Emma held her breath.
Leo’s voice became quieter.
“Richard Cole was not the person who betrayed me.””
Richard exhaled.
But then Leo continued.
“He was the person I was trying to protect.””
Emma looked confused.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“But if he ever tells you he knows the whole truth…”
A pause.
“He’s lying.””
Richard’s face changed.
Emma looked at him.
Leo’s final words came through the speaker.
“Because Richard doesn’t know the person who betrayed us.””
Static.
Then:
“I do.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then a sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Someone had arrived.
Victor turned off the flashlight.
Everyone froze.
Through the broken window, a figure stood outside.
Watching.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Emma looked at him.
“You know him?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Yes.””
The figure stepped closer into the light.
And Emma saw the face.
The face from the photograph.
The face from the funeral.
The man who had given her the necklace.
Victor whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Emma stared.
Because the man standing outside had not aged a day.
May you like
And then Richard said the words that made her blood turn cold.
“Leo Carter.””
