Chapter 1: The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

“Tell them the truth.””
My voice shook, but I refused to lower it.
The birthday room went silent.
Colorful balloons floated above the cake table. A chocolate cake sat beneath a banner that read HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CALEB. Half-empty glasses of soda covered the coffee table, and someone had left a birthday candle burning beside a plate of untouched cupcakes.
But nobody was looking at the decorations anymore.
They were looking at me.
At the white envelope in my hand.
And at my stepbrother, Caleb.
He stood across the living room wearing his cream varsity jacket, surrounded by friends and cousins. A moment earlier, he had been laughing loudly, accepting expensive gifts, and telling everyone how lucky he was to have such a wonderful family.
Now his smile had disappeared.
“You don't know what you're talking about,” Caleb said.
My father, Marcus, turned toward him.
“Then explain it.””
Caleb glanced at Dad, then at his mother, Vanessa.
That was when I noticed something strange.
Vanessa wasn't confused.
She was terrified.
“Maya,” she said, approaching me with a carefully rehearsed smile.
“Sweetheart, let's not ruin your brother's birthday.””
I looked at her hand as she wrapped it around my arm.
“Let go.””
Her fingers tightened.
“Don't embarrass yourself.””
I pulled away.
“I'm not the one who should be embarrassed.””
Dad stepped between us.
“What is going on?””
I lifted the envelope.
“Ask Caleb about Rebecca Collins. Ask him about Sky. And ask him why he hid these documents in his bedroom.””
Caleb's face drained of color.
His friend Tyler lowered his birthday gift.
“Dude, who's Rebecca?””
“Shut up, Tyler,” Caleb snapped.
Dad's expression hardened.
“Watch your mouth. You're going to answer my question.””
Before Caleb could respond, the phone on the coffee table vibrated.
A voice message notification appeared.
REBECCA — SKY'S MOM.
Caleb moved toward it.
“Don't touch that!”” Dad ordered.
Caleb stopped.
Dad picked up the phone and pressed play.
A woman's trembling voice filled the room.
“Marcus, if you're listening to this, please understand that I've tried everything. I've called Caleb. I've sent letters. I've even asked Vanessa to help me, but she keeps telling me to leave your family alone.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
Rebecca continued.
“Sky deserves to know what happened to her father. Before Caleb tells you another lie, ask him about October seventeenth. Ask him what he did with the hospital bracelet.””
The recording ended.
Dad lowered the phone.
“Who is Sky?””
Caleb rubbed his forehead.
“It's complicated.””
“Then make it simple.””
“Dad, please.””
“WHO IS SKY?””
I opened the envelope.
Several folded documents slipped into my hand, along with a faded photograph and a tiny hospital wristband.
The photograph showed Rebecca sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.
Caleb stood beside her.
On the back, someone had written:
Caleb and Sky. October 17. The day everything changed.
Dad took the photograph.
His fingers began trembling.
“You told me you were at Tyler's house that night.””
“I was,” Caleb whispered.
“You were with this woman?””
“No!””
“Then why are you in this photograph?””
Caleb looked toward Vanessa.
She immediately turned away.
That small movement told me more than any confession could have.
I unfolded the hospital document.
The patient's name was Rebecca Collins.
The baby's name was Sky Collins.
I turned to the section listing the second parent.
There was a name.
Marcus Reed.
My father's name.
Dad stared at the paper.
“What is this?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Caleb finally spoke.
“Dad, you need to hear me.””
Dad looked at him.
“Why is my name on a birth certificate for a child I've never met?””
Caleb swallowed.
“Because Sky is your daughter.””
A strange sound escaped my aunt's mouth.
Someone dropped a glass.
Dad slowly sat down.
For years, I had believed our family was complicated enough.
My mother had died when I was eleven. Dad had remarried Vanessa three years later. Caleb had arrived with her, and suddenly I was sharing my home, my father, and eventually my bedroom hallway with a boy who seemed determined to make my life miserable.
But this?
This was something else entirely.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa. Did you know I had another daughter?””
“Marcus, please. Not here.””
“Did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The word landed like a brick.
Dad stood up.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Since before we got married.””
My stomach twisted.
Dad stared at her as if he had never seen her before.
“You knew before our wedding?””
“Let me explain.””
“You knew I had a child, and you let me stand at that altar without telling me?””
“Because I was protecting our marriage!””
I laughed bitterly.
“Protecting your marriage?””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“You don't understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She pointed at the envelope.
“You had no right to search Caleb's bedroom.””
“I found it beneath a loose floorboard while looking for my cardigan.””
“You should have left it alone!””
Dad raised his hand.
“Enough. Nobody is blaming Maya for this.””
Caleb suddenly stepped forward.
“Dad, I didn't know how to tell you.””
Dad turned.
“You were at the hospital?””
Caleb nodded.
“Rebecca called me that night. She was scared. She didn't know what to do.””
“Why did she call you?””
Caleb's lips parted.
Then closed.
Vanessa answered for him.
“Because he was the only person she trusted.””
Dad looked between them.
“Why?””
Silence.
I examined the documents again.
There was a handwritten note folded around the hospital wristband.
It had only one sentence:
Marcus, before you decide what to do with Sky, you need to know what Vanessa promised me in exchange for keeping her existence a secret.
Dad snatched the note.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at his wife.
“What did you promise her?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Marcus, I did what I had to do.””
“What did you promise?””
She opened her mouth.
But Caleb interrupted.
“Mom, don't.””
The entire room turned toward him.
Vanessa looked at her son.
“Caleb, stop.””
He shook his head.
“You've made me carry this for years.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Carry what?””
Caleb's eyes filled with tears.
Then he said something that made the room go completely still.
“Sky isn't the only child Vanessa paid Rebecca to keep away from you.””
I felt my knees weaken.
Dad gripped the edge of the coffee table.
“What does that mean?””
Caleb looked directly at me.
“It means Maya isn't the only daughter you have living in this house.””

And for the first time that evening, I wondered whether the biggest secret in our family had been hidden from my father.
Or from me.
