Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Was Never Missing

Vanessa entered the house without knocking.
A man in a dark suit followed her.
She looked at Patricia first.
Then at the envelope in Dad's hand.
Her expression hardened.
“What are you doing here?””
Patricia stood straighter.
“Returning something that should never have been taken.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””
Patricia placed both hands on the back of a chair.
“I know exactly what I'm interfering with. I've spent eighteen years regretting what I allowed you to do.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Vanessa, who is Sky?””
She looked at him.
Then at me.
Then she smiled.
It was the same smile she used whenever she wanted to make an uncomfortable conversation disappear.
“Marcus, you're exhausted. You're letting Rebecca manipulate you.””
“Answer my question.””
“I already told you everything.””
“No. You told me lies.””
The man in the suit stepped forward.
“Mr. Reed, I'm Daniel Foster. I'm representing Mrs. Reed.””
Dad looked at him.
“Your client is welcome to answer my questions herself.””
Daniel adjusted his jacket.
“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.””
“No.””
Dad pointed toward the documents.
“My daughter has spent eighteen years believing one woman gave birth to her, another woman raised her, and neither of them had anything to hide. I want the truth in this room.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Maya, sweetheart, please don't listen to them.””
I laughed.
“Don't call me sweetheart.””
Her expression tightened.
“I raised you.””
“You stole me.””
“I gave you a home!””
“You took me away from my mother!””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“Elena was weak. She couldn't protect you.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Don't you dare speak about Elena like that.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You think she was perfect? You think she wanted you to know everything?””
Dad stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa's face changed.
For the first time, she seemed to realize she had said too much.
Patricia opened her handbag.
“I think it's time everyone heard what happened.””
She removed a small cassette recorder.
I stared at it.
“What's that?””
“Something my husband recorded eighteen years ago.””
Vanessa took a step forward.
“Patricia, don't.””
Patricia pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
It was older, slightly distorted, but clear enough to understand.
“Vanessa, I can't keep doing this. Rebecca didn't agree to give up both children. She signed papers for one child, and you changed the arrangement.””
A woman's voice answered.
Vanessa.
“She was barely conscious. She signed what I put in front of her.””
“That isn't consent.””
“Do you want Marcus to lose everything? Do you want Elena to find out what happened?””
The recording crackled.
Then the man spoke again.
“I'm telling you now. The baby belongs with her sister.””
Vanessa's voice became colder.
“Then take the baby to the family I chose. And don't ever mention this again.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Dad stared at Vanessa.
“You changed the documents while Rebecca was recovering?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I did what was necessary.””
Patricia shook her head.
“You did something unforgivable.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“And what did you do? You accepted the money.””
Patricia's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
The admission shocked me.
“I accepted money,” she continued.
“But I never adopted Sky. I couldn't bring myself to do it after I learned what had happened.””
Dad frowned.
“Then where did the baby go?””
Patricia looked at me.
“I returned her to the person Vanessa had selected.””
“Who?””
Patricia hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother's best friend.””
I blinked.
“Which friend?””
Patricia opened another folder.
Inside was an old photograph of three women standing outside a house.
My mother, Elena.
Rebecca.
And a third woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Mrs. Evelyn Brooks.
Our next-door neighbor.
The woman who had brought casseroles after my mother's funeral.
The woman who had helped me with homework when Dad worked late.
The woman who had attended every school performance and called me her little sunshine.
I stared at the photograph.
“Mrs. Brooks?””
Patricia nodded.
“She was told the baby had been abandoned. Vanessa told her the biological mother had disappeared and that the child needed a stable home.””
Dad shook his head.
“Evelyn?””
Vanessa looked away.
Dad stepped toward her.
“You knew Evelyn had Sky?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Did you?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
I felt dizzy.
All those years, Sky had been living three houses away.
She had been at our Christmas parties.
She had helped me study for exams.
She had sat beside me during my mother's funeral.
But she had never told me she was my sister.
I pulled out my phone and called her.
It rang four times.
Then a familiar voice answered.
“Maya?””
“Where are you?””
“Home. Why?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Can you come over?””
There was a pause.
“Is something wrong?””
I swallowed.
“It's about your mother.””
Another silence.
Then Sky said quietly:
“Which one?””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Dad.
He heard it too.
“Sky,” I whispered, “what do you know?””
She exhaled.
“Can I come over?””
“Please.””
Twenty minutes later, the front door opened.
Sky walked inside wearing jeans and a blue sweater.
She looked at the gathered people.
Then she saw the documents on the table.
Her face changed.
“Oh.””
I stood.
“Did you know?””
She looked at me.
“Not everything.””
“Did you know Rebecca was your biological mother?””
Sky nodded.
“Since I was fourteen.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Fourteen?””
She looked down.
“Evelyn told me.””
I struggled to find my voice.
“Did you know I was your twin?””
Sky's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She began crying.
“I'm sorry.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa threatened to have Evelyn arrested if I ever said anything.””
Dad turned sharply.
“Why would she threaten Evelyn?””
Sky wiped her cheeks.
“Because Evelyn had signed papers agreeing to keep me temporarily. Vanessa told her the arrangement was legal. When Evelyn discovered the truth, she wanted to take me to Rebecca.””
Patricia nodded.
“That happened.””
Sky continued.
“Vanessa told her she would report her for kidnapping. She said Evelyn could lose everything.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You threatened an elderly woman to keep us apart?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was trying to keep this family together.””
Sky laughed through her tears.
“You kept us apart because you were afraid we'd discover what you did.””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed!””
Sky stepped forward.
“I grew up calling another woman Mom because you wanted to control my father's life.””
Dad's face tightened.
“Sky, I'm sorry.””
She looked at him.
For the first time, her expression softened.
“Are you really my father?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
She covered her mouth.
Dad took a step toward her, but stopped when she backed away.
“I understand if you need time,” he said.
Sky nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“I always wondered what it would feel like to meet you.””
I stared at her.
“You could have just knocked on my door.””
She gave a small, broken laugh.
“I know.””
We stood facing each other.
Identical eyes.
Similar noses.
The same small scar beneath the left eyebrow.
I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child.
And now my twin sister was standing in front of me.
Caleb approached quietly.
“Sky?””
She turned.
His face crumpled.
“I'm sorry.””
Sky looked confused.
“For what?””
“For taking you from the hospital.””
Her eyes widened.
“You were the boy in the photograph?””
Caleb nodded.
“I didn't know what Mom was doing.””
Sky stared at him.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“You told me my brother had died.””
Caleb closed his eyes.
“What?””
Sky's voice trembled.
“When I was little, I asked Evelyn why I didn't have siblings. She told me I had a twin sister and a brother who had died shortly after I was born.””
Caleb shook his head.
“I never died.””
Sky began crying harder.
Vanessa looked away.
Dad stepped toward her.
“Who told Sky that?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I did.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because I couldn't let her search for Caleb.””
Caleb stared at his mother.
“You told her I was dead?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
I looked at her.
“You destroyed every relationship in this family because you were afraid of losing control.””
She suddenly slammed her hand against the table.
“You think this was easy for me?””
Nobody responded.
“I raised you, Maya! I fed you, clothed you, took you to school! I gave up everything!””
I stared at her.
“You took everything from everyone else.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
Then she pointed at Sky.
“And don't pretend she's innocent. Rebecca wasn't a good mother. She couldn't even afford to raise two children!””
Sky stepped forward.
“My mother never abandoned me.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She signed the papers!””
Patricia interrupted.
“She signed because you told her she was signing a temporary care agreement.””
Vanessa went silent.
Patricia placed a final document on the table.
“Your lawyer should know this. The original agreement was never legally completed.””
Daniel Foster took the document.
He read it carefully.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Reed…”
“What?””
“This document could expose you to serious legal consequences.””
Dad stared at him.
“Is that why you're here? To protect her?””
Daniel closed the folder.
“I'm here to advise my client.””
Then he looked at Dad.
“But there is something you should know. Vanessa instructed me this morning to prepare a transfer of property.””
Dad frowned.
“What property?””
Daniel hesitated.
“The family home.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“Why?””
She looked directly at Dad.
“Because if this family is going to fall apart, I'm not leaving with nothing.””
Dad's face hardened.
“You're selling our home?””
“It's partly mine.””
“Not if you obtained it using money taken from Rebecca.””
Daniel slowly closed his briefcase.
Then he said something that changed the entire conversation.
“There's another issue. The house was purchased using a trust account established for Maya's benefit when she was born.””
Dad looked confused.
“What trust account?””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Your biological mother left you an inheritance. It was supposed to become available when you turned eighteen.””
Vanessa's face went white.
Daniel continued.
“But according to the financial records, the entire trust was emptied three months ago.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“How much?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Approximately $2.4 million.””
Dad grabbed the table.
“What?””
Vanessa backed toward the hallway.
And for the first time, I understood why she had returned with a lawyer.
She hadn't come to defend her secrets.
She had come to protect the money.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He opened his briefcase and removed one final document.
“The transfer was made to an offshore company.””
Dad looked at the name.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Why is Caleb listed as the beneficiary?””
Caleb stared at the document.
“What?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Marcus, please.””
Dad shook his head.
“Did you steal Maya's inheritance and put it in Caleb's name?””
Vanessa began crying.
But Caleb wasn't looking at her.
He was looking at the final page.
Because beneath the account details was another signature.
A signature that didn't belong to Vanessa.
It belonged to Elena.
May you like
My mother.
And the date beside it was three months before her death.
