Chapter 6: The Money My Mother Left Behind

I couldn't stop staring at the signature.
Elena Reed.
My mother's name.
Three months before she died.
Dad took the document from Daniel.
“This is impossible.””
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
“It's a copy of a banking authorization. I haven't verified its authenticity.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Marcus, Elena signed that document willingly.””
Dad looked at her.
“Why?””
“She wanted to help Caleb.””
I turned toward her.
“With my inheritance?””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“She wanted to help the family.””
“I'm the family she left that money to.””
“Don't be selfish, Maya.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
I looked at Dad.
He was shaking.
“Vanessa, I want you to leave.””
She stared at him.
“What?””
“Get your things and leave my house.””
“This is my house too!””
“Not anymore.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Mr. Reed, I would advise against making any decisions until we review the property documents.””
Dad pointed toward the door.
“I don't care what you advise. She has lied to me for eighteen years, stolen from my daughter, and concealed two children. I want her gone.””
Vanessa looked at Caleb.
“Tell him.””
Caleb didn't move.
“Caleb!””
He stared at the floor.
“Tell your father what Elena asked me to do.””
Caleb's head lifted.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“You know.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“You know what she said before she died.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Caleb, what did Elena ask you to do?””
Caleb looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
And finally, he spoke.
“Elena asked me to protect Maya.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What?””
Caleb nodded.
“She came to my room a few weeks before the accident. She was crying. She told me she was worried about Mom.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
Caleb continued.
“She gave me a small key and told me there was something in the house I needed to keep safe.””
Dad looked confused.
“What key?””
Caleb reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small brass key.
“I've had it ever since.””
Vanessa lunged toward him.
“Give me that!””
Caleb stepped backward.
“No!””
Dad caught Vanessa's arm.
“Don't touch him.””
Caleb handed the key to me.
It felt surprisingly heavy in my palm.
“What does it open?”” I asked.
“The small safe in Elena's old bedroom.””
Dad looked toward the staircase.
We all knew which room he meant.
After my mother died, Dad had kept her bedroom almost exactly as she had left it.
Vanessa had complained repeatedly that it was a waste of space.
She had wanted to turn it into a dressing room.
Dad had refused.
Now, for the first time in years, we walked inside together.
The room smelled faintly of lavender.
Her old curtains were still hanging by the window.
A framed photograph of Dad and Elena sat on the dresser.
I approached the wardrobe.
Caleb pointed toward the bottom drawer.
“Behind that.””
Dad moved the drawer aside.
A small metal safe was built into the wall.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Inside was a sealed folder, a jewelry box, and a small digital recorder.
Dad opened the folder.
The first document was a trust agreement.
It confirmed that Elena had established an inheritance fund for me.
The original amount was $2.4 million.
The beneficiary was clearly identified.
Maya Reed.
But the next document was something else.
A handwritten letter.
Dad opened it carefully.
His eyes filled before he had read the first paragraph.
“Marcus,” he whispered.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
He began reading.
My love, if you're reading this, then something has happened that I was too afraid to explain while I was alive.
Dad stopped.
Then continued.
I know Vanessa has been asking questions about Maya's inheritance. I know she has been meeting with the bank. I also know she has been telling you that Rebecca is dangerous.
Dad looked up.
Vanessa had been standing in the doorway.
She hadn't followed us inside.
She was listening.
Dad continued.
I don't trust her. I don't trust the papers she brings me. And I don't trust the story she has told you about how Maya came into our family.
My hands began trembling.
I need you to understand that Maya was never a gift from Vanessa. She was my promise to Rebecca. She was the child I was supposed to protect, and I will spend the rest of my life making sure she knows she was wanted.
I covered my mouth.
Dad's voice broke.
*If anything happens to me, do not let Vanessa control the trust. The money belongs to Maya. It is not a family inheritance.
It is not a gift for Caleb. It is not payment for anyone's loyalty.*
Dad lowered the letter.
He was crying.
Then he opened the jewelry box.
Inside was a tiny gold bracelet.
Two names were engraved on it.
Maya and Sky.
Rebecca's name was engraved on the inside.
I touched the bracelet.
My mother had known about both of us.
She had never forgotten my sister.
Dad picked up the digital recorder.
“Does this still work?””
Caleb nodded.
“I think so.””
Dad pressed the power button.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena's voice emerged.
“Marcus, if you are hearing this, please understand that I didn't leave you willingly.””
Dad froze.
It was her voice.
The same soft voice I remembered from childhood.
I began crying.
Elena continued.
“Vanessa has been telling you that Rebecca abandoned the children. That's not true. Rebecca fought for them. She fought harder than anyone I've ever known.””
A pause.
Then:
“I found the original adoption papers. I also found evidence that Vanessa changed the documents after the girls were born.””
Dad gripped the recorder.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” he whispered.
Elena's recorded voice continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything. But Vanessa threatened to expose something from your past. She said if I spoke, she would make sure you lost your job, your reputation, and your relationship with Caleb.””
Dad looked confused.
“My past?””
Elena continued.
“There's something else you need to know. Caleb is not Vanessa's biological son.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Caleb.
He looked as shocked as everyone else.
“What?”” he whispered.
Elena's voice continued.
“Vanessa adopted Caleb when he was a baby. His biological mother was a young woman who died shortly after giving birth. Vanessa has always told him she gave birth to him herself.””
Caleb staggered backward.
“No.””
Dad looked at him.
“Son…”
Caleb shook his head.
“No. That's not true.””
But the recording continued.
“Vanessa has spent her entire life collecting children she could use to build the family she wanted. She took Maya from Rebecca. She separated Sky from her sister. And she lied to Caleb about his own birth.””
Caleb sat down heavily.
I wanted to comfort him.
But he was staring at the recorder as if it had just erased his entire life.
Elena's voice softened.
“Marcus, please protect the children. None of them deserves to pay for Vanessa's choices.””
Then came a pause.
A long one.
Finally, my mother said something that made Dad drop the recorder.
“There's one more thing. The night of my accident, I wasn't alone in the car.””
I stopped breathing.
Dad picked up the recorder.
“What?””
Elena's voice became quieter.
“Vanessa was following me. I saw her car behind mine. I tried calling the police, but she caught up with me before I could.””
The recording crackled.
Then Elena whispered:
“She told me if I didn't sign the trust papers over to Caleb, she would make sure I never saw Maya again.””
A sound of crying followed.
Then the recording ended.
Dad stared at the device.
Nobody spoke.
Caleb suddenly stood.
“I'm going to find her.””
Dad grabbed his shoulder.
“No.””
“She lied to me about everything!””
“Caleb, wait.””
“She made me believe Rebecca was a terrible person. She made me believe Sky was dead. She told me Elena hated Maya.””
His voice broke.
“And now I find out she isn't even my mother?””
Dad pulled him into a hug.
“You're my son. That hasn't changed.””
Caleb began sobbing.
For the first time in eighteen years, I saw him as something other than the boy who had bullied me.
He was another child Vanessa had manipulated.
But that didn't erase the things he had done.
I stepped closer.
“Caleb.””
He looked at me.
“I don't know if I can forgive you for everything.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I know you didn't deserve this either.””
He wiped his face.
“Thank you.””
Dad placed the recorder back inside the safe.
Then he turned toward Daniel, who had been standing in the hallway.
“I want every financial record connected to that trust.””
Daniel nodded.
“I'll arrange an independent review.””
“And I want the original adoption documents.””
“Understood.””
Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.
Dad went downstairs to call the authorities.
I remained in Elena's bedroom, holding the bracelet.
Caleb stood by the window.
After several minutes, he spoke.
“Do you think she ever loved us?””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
I considered the question.
“I think she loved the idea of having a family she could control.””
Caleb nodded slowly.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“It's Mom.””
“Don't answer.””
He shook his head.
“I'm going to.””
He put the call on speaker.
Vanessa's voice came through immediately.
“Caleb, where are you?””
“In the house.””
“Listen to me carefully. Your father is going to turn everyone against me. You need to come with me.””
“No.””
“Don't be stupid.””
Caleb closed his eyes.
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“You told Sky I was dead.””
“I had to.””
“You told me Rebecca was dangerous.””
“She was!””
“You told me Maya was an accident.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
“Caleb, you have no idea what Elena was really doing.””
Dad returned to the doorway.
He heard the conversation.
“What was Elena doing?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She was planning to leave Marcus.””
Dad froze.
“What?””
“She was going to take Maya, the money, and everything else.””
“That isn't true.””
“You think you know everything about your precious wife?””
Dad gripped the doorframe.
“Explain.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Ask Rebecca why Elena was meeting someone secretly during the final weeks of her life. Ask her who the real beneficiary of that trust was supposed to be.””
Dad stared at the phone.
“Who?””
Vanessa answered:
“Sky.””
The call disconnected.
I looked at the bracelet in my hand.
Two names.
Maya and Sky.
Then I remembered something in the trust agreement.
A line I hadn't paid attention to.
Primary beneficiary: Maya Reed.
Secondary beneficiary: Sky Collins.
Dad took the document from me.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he whispered:
“There's another page missing.””
Caleb turned toward the safe.
The folder had a torn edge.
Someone had removed the final sheet.
And without it, we couldn't know whether Vanessa had stolen the money from me alone.
Or whether she had stolen it from both of us.
Dad's phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from the bank.
*SUBJECT: URGENT — BENEFICIARY CHANGE REQUEST.*
The request had been submitted three months before Elena died.
The new beneficiary was Vanessa Reed.
And attached to the request was a medical authorization bearing Elena's signature.
Dad stared at it.
Then he noticed the date.
The authorization had been signed two days after Elena's death.
Which meant someone had forged her signature.
And the person who had submitted it had used a document that only one person in the family could have accessed.
Vanessa.
But the bank's final attachment contained something even more disturbing.
A photograph of Elena's original death certificate.
Beneath the official cause of death was a handwritten note from the investigating officer:
Possible brake-line interference. Further examination requested.
Dad looked at me.
His voice was barely audible.
“Maya…”
I knew what he was thinking.
May you like
The accident might never have been an accident.
And somewhere in the house, Vanessa had been keeping the evidence for eighteen years.
