Amused

Chapter 6: The Betrayal Hidden In Plain Sight

The room went silent after Victor’s words.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that came before something broke.

Emma looked at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then back at Victor.

“The person who betrayed my father is still standing beside me?””

Her voice sounded smaller than she wanted.

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Victor looked at him.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You disappear for twelve years. You refuse to explain what happened. Then you walk into my archive and accuse someone without proof.””

Victor didn’t move.

“I have proof.””

Emma’s heart raced.

“What proof?””

Victor looked at the table.

“The same proof Leo died protecting.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Where is it?””

Victor looked at Emma.

“Not where you think.””

She frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before Victor could answer, Daniel moved.

It was a small movement.

Almost invisible.

But Emma noticed.

His hand slowly reached inside his coat.

Richard saw it too.

“Daniel.””

The older man froze.

Emma looked between them.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel slowly removed his hand.

He wasn’t holding a weapon.

He was holding a small recorder.

A tiny black device.

Emma stared.

“Why do you have that?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I wanted to record the conversation.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victor said quietly:

“Because Daniel never stopped collecting information.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Careful.””

Victor laughed softly.

“Still the same.””

Emma looked at Daniel.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel sighed.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked around the room.

For the first time, he seemed tired.

“I spent years trying to find out what happened to Leo.””

Emma shook her head.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“It isn’t.””

He placed it on the table.

“But I was never completely honest with you.””

Richard stared.

“With me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

The billionaire’s expression became cold.

“After Leo disappeared, you told me he was dead.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

Emma felt something wrong.

“Why?””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Because I thought he was.””

Victor immediately interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor’s voice was calm.

“You knew he wasn’t.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what I knew.””

“I know exactly what you knew.””

The tension between them filled the room.

Emma stepped between them.

“Stop.””

Both men looked at her.

“I’m tired of watching people talk in pieces.””

Her voice shook.

“But I’m more tired of realizing everyone knew my father better than I did.””

Nobody spoke.

“So tell me.””

She pointed at Daniel.

“Why do you have a recorder?””

Then at Victor.

“Why do you think he betrayed Leo?””

Then at Richard.

“And why does everyone keep acting like my father’s death is some secret war?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because it was.””

Emma stared.

He continued.

“You thought Leo was a mechanic.””

Richard walked toward the table.

“He was.””

“But he was also someone who spent years investigating corruption.””

Emma looked down.

“My father?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father noticed things other people ignored.””

Victor added:

“That was why Leo was dangerous.””

Emma looked at him.

“Dangerous to who?””

Victor hesitated.

Then:

“To people who believed money could erase consequences.””

The answer was vague.

Too vague.

Emma hated it.

“What exactly did he find?””

Richard opened a drawer.

Inside were dozens of documents.

He pulled out one file.

“This.””

Emma opened it.

At first, it looked like ordinary business records.

Numbers.

Transactions.

Company names.

Then she saw the dates.

Years before.

Transfers.

Payments.

Hidden accounts.

Her eyes moved faster.

“What am I looking at?””

Richard said quietly:

“Money being moved through fake companies.””

Emma frowned.

“So?””

“So those companies were connected to illegal activities.””

Daniel added:

“Extortion. Fraud. Bribery.””

Emma looked up.

“And my father found this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because one of the victims was someone he knew.””

Emma waited.

“Who?””

Richard’s silence answered first.

Then:

“Your mother.””

The world seemed to stop.

Emma stared.

“My mother?””

She almost laughed.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“My mother died when I was three.””

“I know.””

“You’re saying Leo investigated this because of her?””

Richard nodded.

Emma looked at the documents again.

She barely remembered her mother.

Only small pieces.

A perfume bottle.

A soft voice.

A photograph beside her bed.

“You never told me.””

Richard looked guilty.

“I didn’t know how.””

“Try.””

He took a breath.

“Your mother worked for one of the companies connected to these accounts.””

Emma’s fingers tightened.

“She knew something.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Richard looked down.

“She tried to expose it.””

The room became colder.

“She disappeared.””

Emma whispered:

“Like my father.””

Nobody answered.

Because they both knew.

The pattern was obvious.

Richard continued.

“Leo spent years trying to understand what happened.””

Emma looked at the file.

“And he found them.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Someone inside Cole Enterprises.””

Again.

Someone inside.

The same words.

The same mystery.

Emma looked at Victor.

“You know who.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

Victor remained silent.

“Tell me.””

His expression changed.

“I can’t.””

Emma stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because you’re not ready.””

Her anger exploded.

“My father disappeared. My mother disappeared. People have been lying to me for twelve years.””

She stepped closer.

“I am done being protected.””

Victor looked at her.

And for a moment, he saw Leo.

That was obvious.

“You sound like him.””

Emma’s voice softened.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Victor looked at Richard.

Richard gave a small nod.

Victor finally spoke.

“Leo discovered that the person controlling everything was someone with access to every department in the company.””

Emma waited.

“Someone trusted.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Victor looked at the door.

Then back at her.

“The person who handled all of Richard’s private investigations.””

Richard went still.

“No.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

Emma looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Richard’s face changed.

Because he already knew.

“No.””

Victor’s voice was quiet.

“Say the name.””

Richard didn’t.

He couldn’t.

Emma watched him.

And suddenly she understood.

The betrayal wasn’t just a theory.

Richard knew.

“Who is it?””

Richard closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Martin Voss.””

The name meant nothing to Emma.

But it meant everything to Richard.

“Who is Martin?””

Richard looked at the old files.

“My closest friend.””

The room went silent.

“My business partner.””

Emma stared.

“And he’s the one who betrayed my father?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“Yes.””

Emma felt sick.

“Then why is he still free?””

Nobody spoke.

That question hung in the air.

Then Daniel slowly said:

“Because he made sure everyone believed Leo was the criminal.””

Emma turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“After Leo disappeared, evidence appeared showing he had stolen company information.””

Richard’s hands tightened.

“It was fake.””

“But everyone believed it.””

Emma looked at Victor.

“You knew?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop it?””

Victor looked away.

“Because by the time I realized what Martin was doing…”

His voice cracked slightly.

“…Leo was already gone.””

A notification sound interrupted them.

Everyone froze.

It came from Emma’s phone.

She looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

Her blood ran cold.

*You finally learned Martin’s name. Good. Now ask Richard why Leo trusted him first.*

Emma slowly raised her eyes.

Richard was staring at her phone.

“Who sent that?””

She didn’t answer.

Because another message appeared.

This one with a photograph.

Emma opened it.

And every person in the room went silent.

It was a picture of Leo.

Taken twelve years ago.

But Leo wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was Martin Voss.

And in Leo’s hand was a document.

A document Emma recognized.

Because it had the same symbol as her necklace.

Victor stepped closer.

His face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Emma looked at him.

“What?””

Victor stared at the photograph.

“Because that picture was taken…”

He stopped.

Richard grabbed the phone.

“When?””

Victor looked at the date.

His expression collapsed.

“Three days after Leo supposedly died.””

Nobody breathed.

Emma stared at the image.

Her father had been alive after his disappearance.

And someone had known.

Someone had lied.

Then her phone received one final message.

A single sentence.

*Your father didn’t leave you a goodbye, Emma. He left you a warning.*

And beneath it was a location.

A place she had never heard of.

But Richard recognized immediately.

Because his face turned white.

“No.””

Emma looked at him.

“What is it?””

Richard whispered:

“That’s where Leo was last seen alive.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“That’s where we buried the truth.””
