Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Inside The Photograph

Emma had spent her entire life believing she knew exactly who Leo Carter was.

A quiet man.

A kind man.

A man who fixed broken cars in a small garage, came home smelling like engine oil, and always left the porch light on because he hated the thought of anyone coming home to darkness.

That was the man she knew.

The man who taught her how to ride a bicycle.

The man who sat beside her hospital bed when she had the flu.

The man who worked double shifts so she could attend college.

But standing inside that empty ballroom, holding a letter that mentioned murder, evidence, and powerful enemies, Emma wondered if she had ever truly known him at all.

The car ride away from the hotel was silent.

Too silent.

Richard sat in the back seat with Emma while Daniel sat across from them.

Outside the window, the city lights passed like blurred stars.

Emma stared at the envelope in her hands.

She had read the letter three times already.

Each time, the same sentence hurt more.

I wanted you to have a normal life.

A normal life built on a lie.

Finally, she looked up.

“Where are we going?””

Richard answered without looking at her.

“Somewhere safe.””

Emma almost laughed.

“Safe?””

Her voice was bitter.

“I spent twenty-four years thinking my biggest problem was paying rent on time.””

Richard looked at her.

“Emma—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I need answers.””

Daniel looked out the window.

“You’ll get them.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

Emma stared at him.

“That’s what everyone says when they don’t want to tell the truth.””

The older man looked at her.

For a moment, she saw something in his face.

Regret.

“You’re right.””

Daniel sighed.

“We should have told you years ago.””

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“Years ago?””

The car became still.

“Who knew about me?””

Richard looked away.

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

“You knew I existed.””

Daniel slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked down at his hands.

“Because Leo brought you to me once.””

Emma froze.

“What?””

“It was shortly after he adopted you.””

Her heart started pounding.

“My father never mentioned you.””

“He wouldn’t.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because by then, he knew he was being watched.””

Emma felt a cold wave move through her.

“Watched by who?””

Neither man answered.

Again.

That silence.

The same silence everyone gave her whenever the truth got close.

Emma leaned forward.

“I’m not a child.””

Richard looked at her.

“I know.””

“Then stop protecting me from information that belongs to me.””

Richard remained quiet.

Finally, he nodded.

“You deserve the truth.””

The car turned into an underground parking garage beneath an old office building.

Emma looked around.

“This is safe?””

Richard nodded.

“My private archive.””

“Archive?””

“A place where I keep documents that can’t be stored digitally.””

Daniel added quietly:

“Especially documents connected to Leo.””

The elevator doors opened.

They stepped inside.

As they descended, Emma noticed something strange.

Richard Cole, the billionaire everyone feared, looked nervous.

Not annoyed.

Not impatient.

Nervous.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened to a hidden hallway.

At the end was a heavy metal door.

Richard entered a code.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a room filled with shelves.

Folders.

Old photographs.

Hard drives.

Boxes labeled with dates.

Emma slowly walked in.

“This is where you kept everything?””

Richard nodded.

“Everything I could recover.””

Emma turned.

“Recover from what?””

Richard walked to a cabinet.

“After Leo disappeared, someone broke into my house.””

Emma watched him carefully.

“What did they take?””

“Almost everything.””

“Almost?””

Richard opened the cabinet.

“Because Leo had already prepared for that.””

Inside was a small wooden box.

The same kind of box Leo used to keep old watches and receipts.

Emma recognized it immediately.

Her breath caught.

“That’s his.””

Richard nodded.

“He gave it to me the night before he vanished.””

Emma stepped closer.

“You saw him?””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Twelve years ago.””

“Before he disappeared?””

“Yes.””

Emma’s voice became quieter.

“What did he say?””

Richard looked at the box.

“He said if anything happened to him, I had to wait.””

“Wait for what?””

“For you.””

Emma felt tears forming.

“My father knew this day would happen?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened the box.

Inside was a small metal key.

An old photograph.

And a tiny USB drive.

Emma stared.

“What is that?””

Richard picked it up carefully.

“The reason Leo died.””

The room went silent.

Emma’s face changed.

“What’s on it?””

“We don’t know.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Richard looked frustrated.

“Leo encrypted it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“He trusted only one person to unlock it.””

Emma looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel and Richard exchanged a glance.

Then Richard said:

“You.””

Emma stared.

“Me?””

“Leo built the password around something only you would know.””

Emma shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Richard placed the drive on the table.

“Your father knew if anyone else had it, they could force them to reveal the information.””

Emma looked at the tiny device.

“He made me the key.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

She thought about Leo.

The way he always asked her strange questions.

Her favorite childhood memory.

The first place they traveled together.

The name of the song he used to hum while repairing cars.

Things she thought were meaningless.

But maybe they weren’t.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Richard’s expression softened.

“Because if you knew, you could be used against him.””

Emma looked away.

She hated that part of her understood.

Leo had always sacrificed himself for her.

Even when she was angry.

Even when she didn’t know.

Richard walked to another shelf.

He pulled out a folder.

“This is everything I know about Leo.””

Emma opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

Leo.

But younger.

Much younger.

Standing beside Richard.

And another man.

Emma looked at the third person.

Her heart stopped.

“That’s him.””

Richard looked at her.

“Who?””

“The man from the ballroom.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The man who sent the message?””

Emma nodded.

“I’ve seen him before.””

Both men froze.

“Where?”” Richard asked.

Emma touched the picture.

“Not him exactly.””

She looked confused.

“I mean his face.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“At my father’s funeral.””

Silence.

Richard’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“He was there?””

Richard grabbed the photograph.

“Impossible.””

Emma shook her head.

“No. I remember.””

She closed her eyes.

The memory returned.

Rain.

Black umbrellas.

People whispering.

A stranger standing behind the crowd.

Watching.

Not crying.

Not grieving.

Watching.

“He stood far away,” Emma whispered.

“Did Leo know him?”” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.””

“Did he speak to you?””

Emma thought carefully.

Then she remembered something.

Something she had forgotten for twelve years.

A moment she had buried because it seemed strange but harmless.

“He gave me something.””

Richard leaned forward.

“What?””

“A necklace.””

Her hand immediately moved to the chain around her neck.

The one she had worn every day since she was twelve.

Daniel stared.

“Your necklace?””

Emma nodded.

“The man said my father wanted me to have it.””

Richard’s face changed.

“Emma…”

“What?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Take it off.””

She frowned.

“Why?””

“Because that necklace may not be what you think.””

Slowly, Emma removed the chain.

For the first time in twelve years, she looked at the small silver pendant carefully.

Daniel took it from her.

His hands began shaking.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel turned the pendant over.

There was a tiny mark carved into the back.

A symbol.

One Emma had never noticed.

Richard recognized it instantly.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

Emma looked between them.

“My father gave it to me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the symbol.

“Leo didn’t make this.””

The room went quiet.

“Then who did?”” Emma asked.

Daniel looked at Richard.

And for the first time, Richard looked truly afraid.

“Because that symbol belonged to the person who ordered the attack on my car.””

Emma felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Her father hadn’t just left her a secret.

He had left her something connected to the person who tried to kill Richard Cole.

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

Richard turned off the lights.

Daniel grabbed the USB drive.

Emma held her breath.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone knew they were inside.

Then a voice came through the locked door.

A voice Emma had never heard before.

But Richard recognized it immediately.

And the fear in his eyes said everything.

“Richard.””

A pause.

Then:

“I know Leo’s daughter is with you.””

Emma’s blood ran cold.

The stranger outside knocked once.

Twice.

Then whispered:

“Open the door, Emma.””

May you like

She stepped back.

Because the voice that called her name sounded like it belonged to someone who had been waiting twelve years to find her.
