Amused

Chapter 8: The Father Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The abandoned storage room felt frozen in time.

Emma stared through the broken window.

The man standing outside looked exactly like the photograph.

Exactly like the memory.

Exactly like the impossible.

Leo.

Her father.

The man who had been dead for twelve years.

Her mind refused to accept it.

“No.””

The word left her lips before she realized she had spoken.

Richard looked at her.

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped closer to the window.

The figure outside moved forward.

The light from the old security lamp touched his face.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same tired smile.

The same face she had seen in every photograph.

The same face that had appeared on the video hours ago.

Her father.

Alive.

Emma’s knees almost gave out.

Daniel caught her arm.

“Emma.””

She pushed him away gently.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“That’s not possible.””

The man outside stopped.

And then he said the one thing that shattered the last piece of doubt.

“Emma.””

Her entire body went still.

Nobody had said her name like that for twelve years.

Not since the last night.

Not since the kitchen.

Not since Leo.

The door opened.

Slowly.

The man stepped inside.

The room became silent.

Emma stared at him.

She wanted to run toward him.

She wanted to hit him.

She wanted to ask why.

Why he left.

Why he let her believe he was gone.

Why he let her mourn him.

Instead, she whispered:

“Dad?””

Leo stopped.

His eyes filled instantly.

“Yes.””

That one word destroyed her.

Tears fell before she could stop them.

She hated him.

She missed him.

She loved him.

All at the same time.

“You’re alive.””

Leo nodded.

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“You’re alive.””

“I am.””

“Then why?””

Leo looked down.

And for the first time, Emma saw something she had never seen in him before.

Shame.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

Emma laughed through her tears.

“This way?””

She pointed around the room.

“With secret files?””

“With strangers?””

“With a billionaire telling me my father was part of some conspiracy?””

Her voice rose.

“You let me bury you.””

Leo closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know.””

The pain in her chest finally came out.

“I waited.””

Leo looked at her.

“Every birthday.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Every Christmas.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Every time something good happened, I wanted to call you.””

Leo looked like every word hurt him.

“I know.””

“And you were alive.””

Silence.

“I was alive because you were.””

Emma froze.

“What?””

Leo looked at Richard.

Then Victor.

Then Daniel.

“The moment I came back to you, they would have found you.””

Emma shook her head.

“Who?””

Leo didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Martin.””

Everyone turned.

Richard looked at Leo.

“You knew.””

Leo nodded.

“Yes.””

The billionaire looked devastated.

“You knew Martin was behind it?””

Leo’s expression changed.

“I suspected.””

Richard’s voice became angry.

“And you let me believe you were dead?””

Leo looked at him.

“I let everyone believe it.””

A painful silence followed.

Richard stepped closer.

“Do you have any idea what that did to me?””

Leo looked away.

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Leo’s answer was quiet.

“Because Martin was watching you.””

Richard stopped.

Leo continued.

“He expected you to come looking for me.””

Richard frowned.

“I did.””

“And that’s why he almost killed you.””

The room went silent.

Emma looked between them.

“You knew all of this?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Leo looked at him.

“I never wanted you involved.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Too late.””

Leo looked at Emma.

“That was the point.””

Emma felt angry again.

“You don’t get to decide my life.””

Leo looked at her.

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“But I was your father.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“I had one job.””

Leo swallowed.

“Keep you safe.””

Emma looked away.

“And you failed.””

Leo closed his eyes.

The sentence hit harder than she expected.

Immediately, she regretted it.

But she was too hurt to take it back.

A long silence followed.

Then Victor spoke.

“We need to leave.””

Everyone looked at him.

Leo nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard frowned.

“Why?””

Leo looked toward the entrance.

“Because now that Emma knows I’m alive, Martin knows too.””

As if summoned by the words, a sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Then another.

Daniel looked through the window.

“We’re not alone.””

Leo’s expression changed.

The warmth disappeared.

The protective father disappeared.

The man who had survived twelve years of hiding returned.

“How long?””

Daniel checked the road.

“Two minutes.””

Richard looked at Leo.

“You have a plan?””

Leo gave a small smile.

“You know me.””

Richard stared.

“I thought I did.””

The words carried pain.

Leo accepted it.

Then he turned to Emma.

“Come here.””

She hesitated.

A part of her wanted to refuse.

But another part was still the little girl waiting for her father to come home.

She stepped closer.

Leo reached into his jacket.

He pulled out something small.

A photograph.

Emma recognized it.

The same one.

But this time, Leo held the original.

“You kept this?””

She whispered.

“Every day.””

Her eyes filled again.

“Why?””

“Because when I thought I might never see you again…”

He looked at the picture.

“I needed to remember what I was fighting for.””

Emma looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Leo’s answer came quietly.

“Because someone close to me tried to use you as a weapon.””

Emma froze.

“Who?””

Leo looked at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then Victor.

“Someone you’ve already met.””

The same words.

The same mystery.

Emma’s frustration returned.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No more secrets.””

She looked at Leo.

“You brought me into this.””

Her voice shook.

“So finish it.””

Leo studied her.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a second key.

Not the one from the wooden box.

A different one.

“This unlocks the final archive.””

Richard frowned.

“There’s another?””

Leo nodded.

“The one Martin never found.””

Emma stared.

“Where?””

Leo looked at her.

“Inside the person he trusted most.””

Nobody understood.

Then Leo walked toward Daniel.

Daniel immediately stepped back.

“What are you doing?””

Leo stopped.

He looked at him.

“You kept your promise.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“I tried.””

Richard looked confused.

“What promise?””

Leo didn’t answer.

He looked at Emma.

“Your father trusted Daniel with one thing.””

Emma looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Leo said quietly:

“Your mother’s final letter.””

The room went still.

“My mother?””

Daniel’s expression collapsed.

“No.””

Emma stared.

“You have a letter from my mother?””

Daniel looked away.

“I was supposed to give it to you when you were old enough.””

Her voice became cold.

“Old enough?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Emma almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Leo stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

The older man looked at him.

“You kept it safe.””

Daniel nodded.

“But I failed to give it to her.””

Leo shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Emma.

“You gave it to the wrong person.””

Everyone froze.

Richard turned.

“What?””

Leo looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t lose the letter.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Leo…”

“You gave it to Martin.””

The silence was absolute.

Emma stared.

Daniel’s lips parted.

“No.””

Leo’s eyes hardened.

“I watched you hand it over.””

Richard looked shocked.

“Daniel?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Leo’s voice was quiet.

“That was the problem.””

Emma stepped back.

Another betrayal.

Another secret.

Another person who claimed to protect her.

But before anyone could speak, the lights outside went out.

Every single one.

Leo immediately grabbed Emma’s hand.

“Down.””

A loud crash shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Someone outside had fired.

Richard pulled Emma behind a wall.

Victor moved toward the entrance.

Daniel froze.

Then another sound came.

A voice through a speaker.

Calm.

Familiar.

A voice Emma had heard only once.

But she would never forget.

“Leo.””

Everyone stopped.

The voice continued.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Leo stared into the darkness.

And whispered:

“Martin.””

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Bring me my evidence.””

Emma held her breath.

“Or this time…”

The voice became colder.

“…I won’t disappear your daughter.””

Leo’s hand tightened around hers.

Because he knew something Emma didn’t.

Martin wasn’t threatening to kill her.

May you like

He was threatening something worse.

He was threatening to reveal why Leo had hidden the truth about Emma’s own identity.
