Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew My Childhood Secrets

The voice outside the door knew her name.

Not her job.

Not her age.

Not the name printed on her employee badge.

Her name.

Emma.

The way it was spoken made her skin crawl.

Not like a stranger discovering information.

Like someone saying the name of a person they had been searching for.

Richard stood in the darkness, completely still.

The billionaire who had faced hostile negotiations, angry investors, and public scandals without blinking was now holding his breath beside a locked door.

Emma noticed.

And that scared her more than anything.

“Who is he?”” she whispered.

Richard didn’t answer.

Daniel moved closer to the wall, listening.

The footsteps outside stopped.

Then came another knock.

Gentle.

Almost polite.

“Emma.””

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You don’t know me yet.””

Emma’s heart pounded.

“But I know you.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

The man outside continued.

“I know you used to hide under the kitchen table when thunderstorms scared you.””

Emma froze.

The room became colder.

“I know Leo used to make you hot chocolate with too much cinnamon because you said regular chocolate tasted boring.””

Her fingers tightened.

Those memories were real.

Private.

Only Leo knew those things.

The stranger continued.

“I know he sang the same old song every morning while fixing cars.””

Emma looked at Daniel.

Then Richard.

“How does he know that?””

Nobody answered.

The man outside laughed quietly.

“Because I knew Leo better than anyone.””

Richard stepped toward the door.

“No.””

His voice was filled with anger.

“You knew what he was hiding.””

The stranger went silent.

Then:

“And you knew what he was protecting.””

Richard’s hands clenched.

Emma looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Richard finally spoke.

“His name is Victor Hale.””

The name seemed to carry weight.

Daniel’s expression changed immediately.

“Victor Hale?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Emma looked between them.

“Why do you both look like you’ve seen a ghost?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because Victor Hale was the last person who saw Leo alive.””

The words hit her like a punch.

Emma stared at the door.

The man outside knew her childhood.

He knew her father.

And he had been there at the end.

“Open the door.””

Victor’s voice came again.

“I don’t want to fight you.””

Richard walked toward the security panel.

Emma grabbed his arm.

“What are you doing?””

“Making sure he doesn’t get inside.””

“But you said he was dangerous.””

Richard looked at her.

“He is.””

“Then why is he here?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation told her something.

There was more.

“There’s something you’re not telling me.””

Richard looked away.

Daniel answered instead.

“Because Victor wasn’t always our enemy.””

Emma frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Twelve years ago, there were three people trying to expose a corruption network inside Cole Enterprises.””

He pointed toward Richard.

“Him.””

Then himself.

“And Leo.””

Emma looked at the door.

“Victor was the fourth?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was the person who found the evidence.””

“So why are you afraid of him?””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Because after Leo disappeared, Victor was the one who told everyone Leo was dead.””

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“But Leo’s body was never found.””

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“And Victor never explained why.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

Outside, Victor knocked again.

This time harder.

“Richard.””

His voice lost its patience.

“You know I can get through this door.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Victor continued.

“And you know I don’t want to.””

Emma looked at Daniel.

“Why would he come here now?””

Daniel looked at the USB drive in his hand.

“Because he knows what you have.””

Emma stared at the small device.

The evidence.

The thing her father died protecting.

Then something clicked.

“How did he know?””

Nobody moved.

Emma looked at Richard.

“He followed us.””

Richard’s face changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the door.

“He knew exactly where we were going.””

Daniel became pale.

“He couldn’t have.””

“Why?””

“Because only three people knew about this archive.””

Richard looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel slowly turned.

The silence answered before he did.

“Us.””

Emma’s eyes moved between them.

“You think one of you told him?””

“No,” Richard said immediately.

But Daniel didn’t look convinced.

For a moment, suspicion entered the room.

Then the lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone froze.

The security system beeped.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?”” Emma asked.

“The archive has its own power supply.””

Another beep.

The door lock flashed red.

Daniel stepped back.

“He’s inside the system.””

Richard moved quickly toward the control panel.

“He shouldn’t be able to access this.””

Emma watched his face.

“You said this place was safe.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because he knew it wasn’t anymore.

The lights went out completely.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Emma heard movement.

A chair scraping.

Someone breathing.

Then a small flashlight turned on.

Daniel was holding it.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

Emma’s heartbeat raced.

Then she heard something.

A whisper.

Close.

Too close.

“Emma.””

She turned.

A shadow stood near the shelves.

She stepped back.

But before she could scream, Richard grabbed her shoulder and pulled her away.

The emergency lights came on.

The shadow disappeared.

The door remained locked.

Nobody was inside.

Emma looked around.

“How?””

Richard checked the room.

Then he stopped.

A folder on the table was open.

A folder that had not been there before.

Daniel walked toward it slowly.

“No…”

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel picked up the folder.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Emma walked closer.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

The photograph showed Leo.

But not the Leo Emma knew.

This Leo was standing beside Victor Hale.

Both men looked younger.

Both were smiling.

And between them was a little girl.

Emma.

But she wasn’t smiling.

She was crying.

Emma’s breath stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard stared.

“When was this taken?””

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel picked up the note.

His hands trembled.

“Read it.””

Richard took the paper.

The handwriting was not Leo’s.

It was Victor’s.

Only one sentence was written.

Richard, if you’re reading this, you failed to keep her away from the truth.

Emma looked at the message.

Then another line appeared underneath.

Written in a different ink.

Older.

Familiar.

Leo’s handwriting.

Her heart jumped.

Richard read it aloud.

Emma, if Victor ever finds you, remember one thing.

He stopped.

His voice changed.

“Richard?””

Richard looked at the next sentence.

His face went pale.

“What does it say?”” Emma demanded.

Richard slowly lowered the paper.

“Your father knew Victor would come.””

Emma stared.

“And?””

Richard looked directly at her.

The fear in his eyes was impossible to miss.

“He wrote that Victor is not the person you need to fear.””

Emma felt confused.

“Then who?””

Richard turned the paper around.

The final sentence was written below.

A sentence Leo had apparently left for the day his daughter finally discovered the truth.

Emma read it.

And her entire understanding of her father shattered.

The person who destroyed our lives is someone you trust.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard looked at Emma.

Then the old archive computer suddenly turned on by itself.

A single file appeared on the screen.

No password.

No encryption.

Just a name.

*EMMA_CARTER_FINAL_MESSAGE*

Emma stared at the screen.

Her voice barely worked.

“My father left that?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The file opened.

A video appeared.

And after twelve years of believing she would never hear Leo’s voice again…

Emma saw him sitting in front of the camera.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Her knees almost gave out.

Leo looked directly into the lens.

May you like

And the first words he said were:

“Emma, if you’re watching this, then the person who betrayed me is already close to you.””
