Chapter 9: The Last Thing Sarah Recorded
The police arrived at the house before we did.
I wasn't allowed to enter until Detective Harris confirmed the property was secure.
When I finally stepped inside, the place looked as though someone had searched it in a hurry.
Drawers were open.
Books lay scattered across the floor.
The glass cabinet in the library had been broken.
Sarah's old bedroom was the worst.
Her bedside table had been pulled apart. The mattress had been lifted. Even the small wooden jewelry box she kept on the dresser was lying open.
I stood in the doorway.
For six months, I had avoided this room because every object reminded me of losing her.
Now someone had come here to erase what she left behind.
Detective Harris approached.
"Michael, we found signs of forced entry through the rear door.""
"Anything else?""
"One set of shoe prints. The person appears to have gone directly to the bedroom and the library.""
"Was anything stolen?""
"Your wife's medical records, a small notebook, and a storage envelope.""
I looked toward the empty bedside table.
"What was in the envelope?""
"We don't know.""
Daniel arrived behind me.
He examined the damaged furniture.
"Sarah kept copies of her medical records in a separate folder.""
I turned.
"Why would someone need those?""
"Because the alleged guardianship agreement claims she was mentally competent when she signed it.""
I stared at him.
"She was receiving heavy medication.""
"Exactly. Her medical records could establish whether she was capable of signing legal documents on the dates stated.""
I looked toward the broken cabinet.
"They're trying to destroy the evidence.""
Detective Harris nodded.
"That's our concern.""
Then an officer approached with a small evidence bag.
"Detective, we found this beneath the bed.""
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
I recognized Sarah's handwriting immediately.
There were only four words.
*Andrew knows about the hospital.*
Daniel took a breath.
"That's not a coincidence.""
I looked at the detective.
"Where is Andrew?""
"We've issued a request for his location. His phone is switched off.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Then find him.""
"We're trying.""
At noon, the judge reconvened the hearing.
The temporary guardianship petition had not been approved.
But it hadn't been dismissed either.
Judge Whitman wanted the medical records, the original trust documents, and a full forensic examination of the disputed signatures.
Daniel stood beside me.
"We have enough to challenge the petition, but we still need the original medical records.""
"Can we get copies from the hospital?""
"We're trying. The hospital says certain archived records were requested by an authorized representative several weeks ago.""
I turned toward him.
"Who?""
Daniel showed me the request.
Vanessa Carter.
She had obtained copies using a power-of-attorney document allegedly signed by Sarah.
Another forged document.
The judge entered the courtroom.
Everyone stood.
"After reviewing the preliminary evidence, I am not prepared to grant guardianship to either petitioner at this time.""
I exhaled.
"However," she continued, "the court is concerned about allegations of coercion involving a minor child. I am ordering an immediate review of all documents submitted in support of this petition.""
She looked toward Richard.
"Mr. Hale, your involvement in the disputed financial arrangements will also be examined.""
Richard's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, my client has acted in good faith.""
The judge looked at him.
"Then he should welcome the opportunity to demonstrate that.""
She turned toward me.
"Mr. Carter, I also expect you to cooperate with the court's review of your parenting arrangements. Your business obligations do not excuse parental absence.""
I nodded.
"I understand, Your Honor.""
The hearing ended.
As we left, Vanessa approached me.
"You think you've won.""
I stopped.
"No. I think Lily finally has a chance to be heard.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Sarah would be ashamed of you.""
I stared at her.
"Sarah knew exactly who you were.""
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Then she leaned closer.
"You still haven't found the original recording.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"What recording?""
She smiled faintly.
"The one Sarah made after she found out about Richard.""
I stared at her.
"Where is it?""
Vanessa walked away.
Back at Daniel's office, I called the hospital.
The records department confirmed that the original medical files had been transferred to an off-site archive.
But the archive request had been made using an unusual authorization number.
Daniel recognized it.
"That's the number assigned to Sarah's private medical representative.""
"Who was that?""
He looked at me.
"Andrew Mitchell.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Why would my CFO have authority over my wife's medical records?""
"He shouldn't have.""
Daniel contacted the hospital's legal department.
After several calls, they agreed to release the access history.
The records showed that Andrew had requested Sarah's medical files twice.
The first request had been denied.
The second had been approved using a scanned authorization.
The scanned signature looked authentic.
But the hospital's internal notes contained something interesting.
A nurse had written:
Patient unable to participate in authorization process due to sedation. Requesting party instructed to contact next of kin.
I stared at the note.
"Sarah couldn't have signed it.""
"No," Daniel said.
"She couldn't.""
Then he found another entry.
The person who had collected the documents had signed the receipt.
*Richard Hale.*
I stood.
"Both of them were working together.""
Daniel nodded.
"And they had access to the same records needed to support the false guardianship agreement.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Detective Harris.
*We located Andrew Mitchell's vehicle. The trunk contains a laptop and several documents. Andrew is not inside.*
I immediately called her.
"Did you find anything?""
"Yes. A hotel reservation under a false name. We're checking it now.""
"Can I come?""
"No. Stay where you are.""
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
"Andrew may be trying to leave the country.""
"Then we need to stop him.""
"We'll let the police handle that.""
I paced across the office.
Then I noticed the USB drive from Sarah's lockbox.
We had examined the financial files, but there was one folder we hadn't opened.
Its name was simple.
*LATE RECORDINGS.*
I clicked it.
There were four audio files.
Three were short.
The fourth was nearly forty minutes long.
Daniel moved beside me.
"That's probably it.""
I opened the file.
A recording began.
Sarah's voice was weak, but clear.
"Michael, if you've found this, then I hope you've also found the letter.""
I stopped breathing.
Daniel lowered himself into the chair.
The recording continued.
"I don't know how much time I have left. The doctors keep telling me to rest, but there are things I cannot leave unfinished.""
A pause.
Then Sarah continued.
"I need to tell you what happened with your father.""
I gripped the desk.
"Robert discovered that Richard was Brandon's biological father almost two years before he died. He confronted Vanessa. She admitted the truth, and Robert decided to forgive her.""
I closed my eyes.
That matched what we'd discovered.
"But forgiveness came with conditions. Robert told Vanessa that Brandon would always be treated as his son, but Richard would never be allowed to use that relationship to gain control of the company.""
Sarah took a shaky breath.
"Unfortunately, Richard didn't accept that.""
The recording continued.
"Your father discovered that Richard had been moving money through several companies connected to Northbridge. He planned to report it. But before he could, he suffered his heart attack.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was listening carefully.
Sarah continued.
"Michael, I don't believe Robert's death was an accident.""
My entire body went cold.
The recording went on.
"I know that sounds terrible. I don't have proof. But I found an email between Richard and Andrew discussing the timing of your father's final business meeting.""
Daniel paused the recording.
"That's a serious allegation.""
I stared at the screen.
"My father died of a heart attack.""
"I know," Daniel said.
"But we need to examine this.""
He resumed the recording.
Sarah's voice became quieter.
"Vanessa told me Robert had been under enormous stress. She said he had been taking medication and had become increasingly forgetful. But the medical records I saw didn't match what she described.""
A long silence followed.
Then Sarah spoke again.
"I asked Andrew about the missing records. He became angry. He told me I should focus on my treatment instead of asking questions.""
I felt sick.
"She knew Andrew was involved," I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
Sarah continued.
"Then something happened that changed everything.""
There was a faint rustling sound.
"I received a call from someone claiming to have worked for Northbridge. He told me Richard had been trying to obtain a copy of Robert's private estate instructions.""
Sarah paused.
"He also told me that Richard had arranged for Brandon's paternity to remain hidden because he wanted to keep his position in the family.""
I stared at the screen.
"Why?""
Sarah answered as if she could hear me.
"Because Robert had promised Brandon an inheritance even after discovering the truth. Richard believed that if he could get control of Lily's shares, he could use Brandon's relationship with Robert to challenge the original trust.""
The recording continued.
"Michael, I need you to understand that Brandon is innocent. He is a child. He didn't choose his parents. Please don't let what Vanessa has done turn you against him.""
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like Sarah.
Even at the end, she had thought about the children.
Then her voice changed.
"There's one more thing.""
The recording became clearer.
"Vanessa came to see me yesterday. She brought Lily with her.""
My heart tightened.
"She told me she wanted to make peace. She said she wanted to help care for Lily after I was gone.""
A pause.
"I believed her for approximately five minutes.""
I almost smiled through the pain.
Sarah had never been easily fooled.
"Then she asked Lily to leave the room. She wanted to discuss the trust.""
The next few seconds were difficult to hear.
Sarah coughed.
Then she continued.
"She told me that if I didn't sign the guardianship agreement, Lily would be sent away from Michael. She said she could make the court believe Michael was incapable of raising her.""
My hands began shaking.
Sarah's voice became stronger.
"I refused.""
A long pause.
Then came a sentence I would never forget.
"She looked at me and said, 'You won't be here to stop me.''"
I covered my mouth.
Daniel stopped the recording.
Neither of us spoke.
After a moment, I asked him to continue.
Sarah's voice returned.
"I didn't tell Michael because I was afraid he would confront Vanessa before I could secure the evidence. I knew how much he loved his daughter, and I knew how angry he would become.""
I wiped my eyes.
"I made a mistake by keeping too much from him.""
Then she said something that made me sit forward.
"But I did not sign the agreement. I did not appoint Vanessa as Lily's guardian. And I never gave anyone permission to transfer my daughter's shares.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
We finally had Sarah's direct statement.
But the last file in the folder remained unopened.
It was titled:
*THE PERSON WHO HELPED VANESSA.*
Daniel clicked it.
A man's voice began speaking.
"Richard, the documents are ready.""
Richard replied.
"Good. What about Robert?""
The other man answered.
"That problem is already taken care of.""
I stopped breathing.
Daniel's face went pale.
The voice belonged to Andrew.
Richard asked, "And Sarah?""
Andrew replied, "She knows too much.""
Then came a sentence that made the room feel freezing.
"Once she's gone, nobody will be able to challenge the transfer.""
I slammed my hand against the desk.
"That's enough.""
Daniel immediately stopped the recording.
We looked at each other.
This was no longer merely a financial dispute.
It was evidence of a possible conspiracy involving my father, my wife, and my daughter's inheritance.
Daniel called Detective Harris.
She arrived within twenty minutes.
She listened to the recording twice.
Then she asked one question.
"Do you know when this was recorded?""
Daniel checked the metadata.
"Six months ago. Before Sarah died.""
Detective Harris nodded.
"Then we need the original device and a forensic examination.""
I handed her the USB drive.
She placed it inside an evidence bag.
"Michael, I need you to prepare yourself. If this recording is authenticated, the investigation may expand considerably.""
I looked at her.
"Are you saying someone may have harmed my father and Sarah?""
"I'm saying we have evidence that people discussed them as obstacles to a financial scheme. We need to establish what actually happened.""
I nodded.
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
And her expression changed.
"What do you mean he was found?""
She turned away.
After a few seconds, she ended the call.
"Andrew Mitchell has been located.""
"Where?""
"At a private airfield.""
I stood.
"Was he trying to leave?""
Detective Harris nodded.
"He had a one-way ticket and several bags of documents.""
"Is he under arrest?""
"Not yet. But he's being questioned.""
I exhaled.
Then she added something else.
"He had another person with him.""
"Who?""
Detective Harris looked directly at me.
"Vanessa Carter.""
I drove to the police station with Daniel.
Neither of us spoke much.
When we arrived, Vanessa was sitting in an interview room.
Her handbag was on the table.
Her face was pale.
Andrew was in a separate room.
Detective Harris told me they had found a second laptop in his luggage containing copies of the forged documents and financial transfers.
But the most important discovery was a folder labeled:
*LILY — FINAL ARRANGEMENTS.*
I looked through the glass.
Vanessa stared at the table.
For the first time, she looked old.
Tired.
Frightened.
I entered the interview room with Daniel and Detective Harris.
Vanessa looked up.
"Michael.""
I sat across from her.
"Where were you going?""
She didn't answer.
"Why were you at the airfield?""
"Andrew was helping me.""
"Helping you do what?""
"Leave.""
"With my daughter's money?""
Her eyes filled.
"I didn't steal anything.""
I leaned forward.
"Then explain the documents. Explain the recordings. Explain why you tried to take Lily away from me.""
She looked at Detective Harris.
"Am I being charged?""
"That depends on what we establish.""
Vanessa turned back to me.
"You want the truth?""
"Yes.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Your father knew about Richard. He knew Brandon wasn't his biological son. He also knew Richard had been trying to get control of the company.""
"Then why did he keep you?""
"Because he loved me.""
"And why did he sign those documents?""
Vanessa's eyes moved toward the window.
"He didn't.""
I went still.
"What?""
She lowered her voice.
"Robert never signed the second agreement.""
"Then whose signature is on it?""
She closed her eyes.
"Andrew.""
I stared at her.
"Andrew forged my father's signature?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Richard told him to.""
Detective Harris leaned forward.
"Why?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because Robert was planning to remove Richard from the company. Andrew needed the trust shares to complete the acquisition.""
"Then why did you cooperate?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because Richard promised me Brandon would inherit everything.""
I stared at her.
"Everything?""
"The company. The money. The future.""
"And Lily?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Richard said she would be taken care of.""
"With what? Garbage?""
She flinched.
I continued.
"You had thousands of dollars every month to feed her. You gave your son steak and made my daughter eat scraps. You convinced an eight-year-old that her father didn't want her.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I was under pressure.""
"She was eight.""
"I know.""
"Did you ever think about what you were doing to her?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"I thought it was temporary.""
I stared at her.
"Temporary?""
She nodded.
"Once the documents were approved, everything would have been settled.""
I leaned closer.
"And what would have happened to Lily?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Detective Harris opened the folder found in Andrew's luggage.
She removed a document and placed it on the table.
It was a travel reservation.
Two tickets.
One for Vanessa.
One for Brandon.
The destination was California.
The departure date was the following morning.
There was no ticket for Lily.
I stared at Vanessa.
"You were leaving without her.""
She began sobbing.
"Richard said she would stay with you.""
"After you tried to take her away from me?""
"I didn't know what else to do.""
I stood.
For a moment, I wanted to tell her exactly what I thought of her.
Instead, I looked at Detective Harris.
"I want everything investigated. Every account. Every signature. Every person involved.""
She nodded.
"That's already underway.""
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, Vanessa spoke.
"Michael.""
I stopped.
She looked at me with red eyes.
"There's something you don't know about Sarah.""
I turned slowly.
"What now?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"She knew Richard was planning to use Brandon. But she also knew something about your father's final days.""
"What?""
Vanessa looked at the table.
"Robert didn't have a heart attack at home.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"He collapsed at the office.""
I stared at her.
"That's not what I was told.""
She swallowed.
"Andrew was there.""
The room went silent.
"Andrew was with him when it happened?""
Vanessa nodded.
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
"Your father didn't die immediately, Michael. He was alive when Andrew called Richard.""
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
"What did they do?""
Vanessa looked up.
"I don't know.""
Detective Harris immediately stood.
"Mrs. Carter, I need you to explain exactly what you mean.""
Vanessa began shaking.
"Andrew said your father was conscious. He said he was asking for help.""
I stared at her.
"And?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Richard told him not to call an ambulance until the documents were secured.""
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Then I walked out.
Daniel followed me.
My father might have been alive while two men decided that paperwork mattered more than his life.
And Sarah had spent the final months of hers trying to uncover the truth.
But as I stood in the station hallway, Detective Harris came rushing out of the interview room.
"Michael!""
I turned.
She held up a new evidence report.
"We just received the preliminary forensic results from Andrew's laptop.""
"What?""
"There's a deleted video file.""
I stared at her.
"What video?""
She took a breath.
"Security footage from your father's office on the day he collapsed.""
My heart hammered.
"Does it show what happened?""
Detective Harris looked at me.
"It shows Andrew entering your father's office carrying a folder.""
She paused.
"And leaving without it.""
I swallowed.
"What's in the folder?""
Her expression hardened.
May you like
"Your father's original will.""
And according to the timestamp, Andrew had removed it eleven minutes before the emergency call was made.
