Amused

Chapter 7: The Boy Who Was Never My Father's Grandson

I read the birth certificate three times.

Each time, the words remained the same.

*Father: Richard Hale.*

*Mother: Vanessa Carter.*

For twelve years, Vanessa had allowed my father to believe Brandon was his biological son.

For twelve years, my father had raised another man's child while treating him as the future of the Carter family.

And for six months, that same child had been eating steak while my daughter survived on scraps.

I lowered the document.

"Daniel, is this real?""

He examined the certificate carefully.

"It appears to be an official copy, but we need to verify it.""

Detective Harris took out her notebook.

"Do you know whether your father was aware of this?""

I shook my head.

"He never mentioned anything. He loved Brandon.""

"Did he treat him differently from you?""

I thought about it.

My father had always been generous with Brandon. He paid for his private school, bought him expensive gifts, and took him on trips.

But he had also been generous with me.

I had never questioned it.

"Maybe," I finally said.

"But I never suspected this.""

Daniel placed the birth certificate inside an evidence sleeve.

"Sarah must have discovered the truth before she died.""

I looked at the handwritten note again.

Your father was not the only person in our family who wanted Lily's inheritance.

There was another page beneath it.

I unfolded it.

Michael, I am afraid Vanessa's relationship with Richard Hale was never what she told your father.

They have been connected since before her marriage to Robert.

I believe Brandon was the reason Richard became interested in our family.

I looked up.

"Brandon was the reason?""

Detective Harris nodded slowly.

"That would explain why Richard has been willing to help Vanessa.""

Daniel turned another page.

A photograph slipped onto the desk.

It showed Vanessa and Richard standing outside a hotel. They were holding hands.

The date was eleven years earlier.

Three months before Vanessa married my father.

I stared at it.

"She was already involved with him.""

"Apparently," Daniel said.

I looked at the photograph again.

"Did my father know?""

Detective Harris placed the photograph beside the birth certificate.

"We'll need to establish that.""

Then she noticed something written on the back.

A short sentence in Sarah's handwriting.

Robert knew. He simply couldn't bear to lose the family he thought he had.

I sat down.

My father had known.

He had discovered that Brandon wasn't his biological son, but he had chosen to raise him anyway.

That explained his generosity.

It also explained why Sarah had been so careful about the family documents.

My father hadn't necessarily been a fool.

He might have been trying to protect a child he loved.

But Vanessa and Richard had apparently turned that love into an opportunity.

The following morning, Daniel received confirmation from the state records office.

The birth certificate was genuine.

Brandon's biological father was Richard Hale.

Detective Harris also confirmed that Richard had been married to another woman when Brandon was born.

The divorce had been finalized several years later.

I sat in the police station interview room while she explained the implications.

"There's no automatic criminal offense in concealing biological paternity in every circumstance," she said.

"But it becomes relevant if that information was used to obtain financial benefits through deception or forged legal documents.""

"Was it?""

"We're investigating.""

She placed another folder on the table.

"We also found something interesting in your father's old estate records.""

I opened it.

A handwritten amendment had been added to his original will.

It stated that Brandon would receive a substantial education fund and a smaller personal inheritance.

Nothing unusual.

But beneath the amendment was another document.

A letter from my father.

I know Brandon is not my biological son. I have known for several years.

I stopped reading.

Detective Harris continued.

"Your father appears to have acknowledged the situation privately.""

I turned the page.

I will not punish the boy for the actions of his parents. He is innocent. I have loved him as my own, and I intend to continue doing so.

My throat tightened.

For the first time since discovering the birth certificate, I felt something other than anger.

My father had made a choice.

He had chosen to love a child who wasn't biologically his.

That was not the crime.

The crime was what Vanessa and Richard had done with that choice.

I continued reading.

However, I will not allow Richard Hale to use Brandon as an excuse to gain access to Carter Development Holdings.

I have informed my attorney that Lily's trust must remain protected.

Then came the final paragraph.

If anything happens to me, Michael must be told the truth. I fear Vanessa has already begun making arrangements with Richard.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Why wasn't this letter included in the original estate file?""

"Because it was removed.""

"By whom?""

She pointed to a small notation in the corner.

"Your father's attorney reported that the document had been stored in a separate safe-deposit box. The box was closed shortly after his death.""

"Who had access?""

Detective Harris paused.

"Vanessa.""

I leaned back.

It was becoming clear that my father's death had left behind more secrets than anyone had admitted.

That afternoon, Brandon asked to speak with me.

He was sitting in a quiet room at the station with a social worker nearby.

He looked smaller than he had in my kitchen.

His expensive sneakers were untied. His hair was messy.

He kept rubbing his palms against his jeans.

"Uncle Michael?""

I sat across from him.

"Hey, buddy.""

He looked at the social worker.

"Can we talk alone?""

She explained that she would remain nearby but give us some privacy.

When the door closed, Brandon looked at me.

"Am I really not Grandpa's son?""

I took a breath.

"The records say Richard Hale is your biological father.""

He stared at the floor.

"Mom told me.""

I wasn't surprised.

"How long have you known?""

"Since I was seven.""

"Did Grandpa know?""

Brandon nodded.

"He told me once that being a father wasn't about blood.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Did he?""

Brandon wiped his eyes.

"He said I was his boy, and nobody could take that away.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Brandon asked the question I had been expecting.

"Does that mean I have to leave?""

I looked at him carefully.

"Your living arrangements are something the adults will have to work out. But you aren't being punished for something your parents did.""

He nodded.

Then he began crying.

"Mom said if I didn't help her, we'd lose everything.""

"What did she ask you to do?""

He hesitated.

"She told me to watch Lily.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Watch her how?""

"She said I had to make sure she didn't talk to you about the papers.""

I remained silent.

Brandon continued.

"Sometimes she made me take her food away. She said Lily was pretending to be hungry because she wanted attention.""

I looked at him.

"Did you know she was actually hungry?""

His face crumpled.

"Yes.""

The answer was barely audible.

"Then why didn't you tell someone?""

"Because Mom said she'd send me away. She said Richard would take me if I wasn't useful.""

I leaned forward.

"Brandon, listen. You are not responsible for protecting your mother's lies.""

He nodded.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in her bedroom.""

I unfolded it.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Richard Hale.

The subject line read:

*FINAL TRANSFER — DEADLINE CONFIRMED.*

The email contained three short paragraphs.

The emergency guardianship petition is ready.

Once the father's authorization is accepted, the trust voting rights can be transferred to the administrator.

Vanessa must ensure the child signs the supporting declaration before the hearing.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

If the father interferes, use the contingency plan.

I looked up.

"What contingency plan?""

Brandon shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Then he added something else.

"Mom said there was a recording.""

"What recording?""

"Of you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What about me?""

"She said if you tried to stop the transfer, Richard would show everybody a video proving you weren't a good father.""

I looked at the email again.

The plan was more elaborate than I had realized.

They weren't simply trying to steal Lily's money.

They were preparing to destroy my credibility if I resisted.

I called Daniel immediately.

He read the email and looked up.

"We need to find that recording.""

That evening, Detective Harris obtained a search warrant for Vanessa's remaining electronic devices and personal storage.

The black bag from her bedroom contained several bank statements, copies of Lily's school records, and a small digital recorder.

The recorder had a label attached.

*MICHAEL — FAMILY MEETING.*

I stared at it.

"I've never had a family meeting with Vanessa.""

Detective Harris examined the device.

"We'll have it analyzed.""

Two hours later, an audio technician played the recording for us.

My own voice came through the speakers.

Angry.

Loud.

"Get out of my house, Vanessa! If you ever touch Lily again, I'll make sure you regret it!""

Then Vanessa's voice.

"You're threatening me in front of the child!""

My voice again.

"You're lucky I haven't called the police already!""

The recording ended.

I stared at the machine.

It sounded terrible.

But something was wrong.

I remembered the conversation.

It had happened months earlier, after I discovered Vanessa had taken Lily's tablet away for an entire weekend.

I'd been angry.

But I hadn't threatened her.

"That's edited," I said.

The technician nodded.

"There's a break in the audio waveform. The recording appears to combine separate conversations.""

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"Can you recover the original?""

"We'll try.""

I looked at Daniel.

"They're going to use this to make me look dangerous.""

"Which is why we need the original files.""

The technician connected the recorder to another computer.

A folder appeared.

Inside were several audio fragments.

One was dated three months earlier.

Another was dated six months earlier.

Then a third file appeared.

Its name was different.

*SARAH_HOSPITAL_FINAL.mp3*

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at me.

"Play it.""

The technician hesitated.

"Are you sure?""

I nodded.

The recording began with the faint sound of hospital equipment.

Then Sarah's voice.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

"Vanessa, please. Don't do this.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

Another voice answered.

Vanessa.

"You should have stayed out of it, Sarah.""

"I know what you're planning.""

"You don't know anything.""

"I know about Richard. I know about the shares. And I know what you did to Robert.""

A pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made the room go silent.

"Robert was never supposed to find out.""

Sarah's voice trembled.

"He did find out.""

"Then he should have kept his mouth shut.""

The recording continued for another few seconds.

Then Sarah whispered:

"Michael will know the truth.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Michael doesn't even know his own family.""

The audio stopped.

I sat motionless.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Detective Harris immediately requested that the recording be preserved and submitted for forensic authentication.

I looked at the screen.

Sarah had known.

She had known more than any of us.

And she had been trying to protect Lily until the very end.

Then the technician opened the file's metadata.

His expression changed.

"Detective?""

"What?""

"This recording wasn't created in the hospital.""

I looked up.

"What do you mean?""

He pointed to the date.

It had been recorded six weeks after Sarah's death.

I felt the room tilt.

Someone had recreated Sarah's voice.

Or someone had edited the recording using an older conversation.

And whoever had done it wanted us to believe Sarah had spoken those words shortly before she died.

Detective Harris leaned toward the screen.

"Who had access to the original recordings?""

I looked at Daniel.

He looked at me.

Then the technician opened the file's hidden directory.

A username appeared.

*AMITCHELL_ADMIN.*

Andrew Mitchell.

My chief financial officer.

The man I had trusted for eleven years.

The man who had tried to access Lily's trust after his suspension.

And the man who apparently had access to recordings Sarah had made before her death.

I stood.

"He's not just helping Vanessa.""

Daniel nodded.

"He's manufacturing evidence.""

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

"Mr. Carter, I think it's time we stop pretending we can resolve this through lawyers.""

"Who is this?""

"Richard Hale.""

"What do you want?""

"I want you to understand that the situation is about to become very difficult for your daughter.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"If you go near Lily—"

"Relax. I have no intention of hurting her.""

"Then stay away from her.""

Richard chuckled.

"You still don't understand, do you? Your daughter is the only person standing between my son and the future he deserves.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was recording the call.

"Brandon isn't your bargaining chip.""

"No. But he is my son.""

"And Lily is my daughter.""

Richard's voice became colder.

"Then perhaps you should have been a better father.""

The call ended.

A message arrived seconds later.

It contained a photograph of a legal document.

The title read:

*EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP PETITION — HEARING NOTICE.*

The hearing date was tomorrow morning.

May you like

And the petitioner was not Vanessa.

It was Richard Hale.
