Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Sarah Took to Her Grave

Vanessa lunged toward the letter.

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

"Mrs. Carter, stop.""

"That's private!""

I held the envelope against my chest.

"It's addressed to me.""

"You have no idea what you're reading!""

"Then explain it.""

Her face had gone pale.

For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the kitchen door.

Then Vanessa pointed at the papers scattered across the floor.

"Those are practice sheets. Children write things. They play pretend. You're turning an innocent situation into some ridiculous criminal investigation.""

I picked up the document with Lily's signature.

"Did you ask my eight-year-old daughter to forge my name?""

"She wanted to help!""

"Help with what?""

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He was holding his phone.

"Stop recording me!""

"Answer the question," I said.

She shook her head.

"You don't understand how difficult things have been. I have been managing this household while you disappear for weeks.""

"With my money.""

"Yes! Your money! Do you know how much it costs to raise a child?""

I stared at her.

"You were given four thousand dollars a month for groceries and care.""

"That wasn't enough!""

"And yet you found enough money for Brandon's steak dinners, designer clothes, and private memberships.""

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Daniel picked up a bank statement from the box.

"Michael, you should see this.""

I took it.

The account number belonged to a trust-related financial institution.

The transaction history showed repeated inquiries and attempted administrative changes.

One entry had been highlighted in yellow.

*BENEFICIARY REPRESENTATIVE CHANGE — PENDING REVIEW.*

The proposed representative was Vanessa Carter.

I looked at her.

"What did you try to do?""

She folded her arms.

"Sarah wanted me involved.""

"Sarah never wanted you involved in Lily's finances.""

"You don't know what Sarah wanted.""

I looked down at the letter.

"Actually, I think I'm about to find out.""

We moved into the living room.

Daniel insisted that we preserve the documents exactly as we found them. He photographed the box, the room, and each sheet before placing the papers into separate folders.

Vanessa sat on the sofa, her jaw clenched.

I remained standing.

Then I unfolded Sarah's letter.

Her handwriting was familiar.

Slightly slanted.

Neat.

The same handwriting that used to appear on the notes she tucked into my lunch bag.

I could almost hear her voice.

Michael,

If this letter has reached you, then Lily has turned eight. I wish more than anything that I could be there to celebrate with her.

I know you will have questions about why I asked Daniel to keep this letter sealed. I also know you may be angry with me for not telling you everything sooner.

I stopped reading.

My eyes blurred.

Sarah had written this before she died.

Before the final hospital admission.

Before I watched her struggle to breathe while promising Lily that she would always be with her.

I continued.

There is something I discovered about Vanessa during the last months of my life. Something I should have told you immediately.

I found out she had been contacting people connected to my family's trust. She claimed she was helping us prepare for Lily's future. But the documents she requested were not ordinary estate-planning documents.

I looked up.

Vanessa was staring at the letter.

Her hands were clasped tightly together.

I continued reading.

She wanted information about the voting rights attached to Lily's shares. She also asked whether a surviving parent could appoint a family member to manage those rights without a court hearing.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Keep going.""

I turned the page.

When I questioned her, she told me I was confused because of the medication. She said I was becoming paranoid.

But I wasn't confused, Michael.

I found copies of correspondence in her room. She had been speaking with someone about getting control of Lily's inheritance.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

I read the next paragraph.

I confronted her. She denied everything. Then she told me something I will never forget.

She said Lily would never need eighteen million dollars when Brandon was the one who would eventually run the Carter family business.

My stomach tightened.

I lowered the letter.

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"That's not what I said.""

"Then what did you say?""

"I was talking about the future of the company!""

"Why were you discussing my daughter's inheritance with someone else?""

"Because Sarah was dying, Michael! Someone had to think about what would happen afterward!""

Daniel interrupted.

"Mrs. Carter, who were you communicating with?""

She glared at him.

"That is none of your business.""

Daniel looked at me.

"We need to identify that person.""

I returned to the letter.

Michael, I did not want to tell you while I was undergoing treatment because I knew how much pressure you were under. I also knew you would confront her immediately.

I was afraid she would destroy the evidence.

So I made arrangements with Daniel.

I looked at the attorney.

He nodded slowly.

"Sarah asked me to keep a separate file. I didn't know the contents of the sealed letter, but I knew she had concerns.""

"Where is that file?""

"At my office.""

I continued reading.

There is one more thing.

Vanessa is not the person she has always told you she is.

My fingers went cold.

Before your father married her, she was involved in a financial dispute with her former employer. She left under circumstances that were never fully explained. Your father knew about some of it, but he believed she had changed.

I stopped.

My father.

He had died two years before Sarah.

He had always been generous toward Vanessa, perhaps too generous. He'd bought her a house, paid for Brandon's private school, and included her in family business events.

But I'd never heard about a financial dispute.

Daniel took out his phone.

"I can investigate her previous financial history through the appropriate legal channels.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"Enough!""

I looked at her.

"Sit down.""

"Don't tell me what to do in my own home!""

"This house belongs to me.""

"Your father gave me the right to live here!""

"That doesn't give you the right to steal from my daughter.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed.""

I stepped toward her.

"Tell me what happened to the money.""

She laughed.

"What money?""

"The grocery money. The trust money. The payments you transferred to Brandon.""

Her eyes moved briefly toward the hallway.

That was when I noticed something.

Brandon was standing at the top of the stairs.

He had heard everything.

"Brandon," Vanessa said sharply.

"Go to your room.""

He didn't move.

"Mom?""

"Now!""

He came down slowly.

"What's happening?""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Nothing. Your uncle is being dramatic.""

Brandon looked at the papers.

Then at me.

"Is this about the money?""

Vanessa's grip tightened.

"Brandon, don't.""

I stared at him.

"What do you know?""

He swallowed.

"Nothing.""

"Brandon.""

He looked at his mother.

Then he looked at the floor.

"Mom said Lily's money was supposed to pay for my school.""

Vanessa's face went white.

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"What did you say?""

Brandon began speaking faster.

"She said Lily doesn't need all that money. She said she's just a little girl, and you don't know how to manage it because you're always working.""

"Who told you that?""

"Mom.""

Vanessa shook him.

"Stop talking!""

He pulled his arm away.

"You said the money was going to be ours!""

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

"How much?""

She didn't answer.

"How much of Lily's money did you take?""

"I didn't take anything!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Then you won't object to an independent accounting of every transaction.""

Vanessa pointed at him.

"You're trying to ruin me!""

"No," Daniel replied.

"We're trying to protect a minor beneficiary.""

She turned toward me.

"You think you're some kind of hero? You left your daughter with me! You trusted me! You handed me the responsibility!""

"I trusted you to feed her.""

Her expression changed.

For one second, I saw something that looked almost like hatred.

Then she spoke.

"Sarah was selfish. She gave that child everything and left the rest of us with nothing.""

I stared at her.

"She gave her daughter what belonged to her.""

"Brandon is your father's grandson!""

"And Lily is my daughter.""

"Brandon deserves a future, too!""

"Not one stolen from an eight-year-old.""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

"I'm leaving.""

Daniel moved toward the front door.

"Mrs. Carter, we recommend you remain available for questions. There are documents here that may involve attempted financial fraud.""

She laughed bitterly.

"You can't keep me here.""

"We aren't trying to.""

She pushed past him and walked toward the hallway.

But before she reached the door, Brandon spoke.

"Mom, what about the other papers?""

Vanessa stopped.

I turned toward him.

"What other papers?""

Brandon looked frightened.

"The ones in the garage.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Brandon, shut up.""

He shook his head.

"You told me to hide them.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"What papers?""

Brandon pointed toward the back of the house.

"The ones you made Lily sign.""

Vanessa spun around.

"That is enough!""

But Brandon was already crying.

"You said if she signed them, we could sell the shares and move to California.""

I stared at him.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Sell the shares?""

Brandon nodded.

"Mom said it was already arranged. She said some man was going to buy them.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who?""

She said nothing.

"Who is buying my daughter's shares?""

Her silence lasted several seconds.

Then she lifted her chin.

"You don't understand the business arrangement.""

"Then explain it.""

"Your father owed people money.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He borrowed money before he died. More than you know. I was trying to protect Brandon from losing everything.""

"My father had no outstanding debts when he died.""

"You don't know everything!""

Daniel interrupted.

"Mrs. Carter, are you suggesting that you attempted to use Lily's trust assets to settle a debt belonging to your late husband?""

Vanessa looked away.

I felt the room tilt.

This was bigger than I had imagined.

I turned toward Brandon.

"Where are the papers?""

He pointed toward the garage.

"Inside the old red toolbox.""

I moved immediately.

Daniel followed.

We crossed the kitchen and opened the door leading into the garage. The air smelled of motor oil, cardboard, and dust.

The old red toolbox stood against the far wall.

I opened the top drawer.

Inside were envelopes, a flash drive, and a thick folder secured with a black elastic band.

The first page was a draft agreement.

The second was a financial authorization.

The third contained a company name I recognized.

*Northbridge Capital Partners.*

I knew that company.

They had tried to acquire a controlling interest in Carter Development Holdings twice during the previous year.

Sarah had personally rejected their offers.

I flipped to the signature page.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Again.

A forged signature.

But this time there was something else.

A witness signature.

Daniel leaned closer.

His face went pale.

"Michael...""

"What?""

He pointed to the name beneath the witness declaration.

*Robert Carter.*

My father's name.

I stared at it.

My father had been dead for two years.

And yet someone had used his signature on a document dated six weeks ago.

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note attached to the agreement.

Once the guardian authorization is approved, the transfer can proceed without further family consent.

I read it twice.

Then I noticed a second line.

The original agreement was signed before Sarah's death.

My blood ran cold.

"Daniel, what does that mean?""

He took the document from me.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked toward Vanessa, who had followed us into the garage.

"Mrs. Carter, did you have an agreement with Northbridge Capital before Sarah died?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

But she didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at the folder in my hands.

And then she said something I never expected.

"Your father didn't die believing you should control that company.""

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"He changed his will three weeks before his death.""

Daniel went completely still.

"That's impossible," he said.

"I prepared the final will myself.""

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Then perhaps you should ask who prepared the other one.""

She reached into her handbag, pulled out her phone, and opened a photograph.

She turned the screen toward me.

It showed my father sitting at his desk, signing a document.

Beside him stood a man I recognized from Northbridge Capital.

And on the desk, clearly visible beneath my father's hand, was a second will.

A will I had never seen.

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

"Your father left something for Brandon, Michael.""

She paused.

"And Sarah knew about it.""

I looked down at the letter still in my hand.

There was one final paragraph I hadn't read.

I unfolded the last page.

My wife's handwriting seemed to shake beneath my fingers.

Michael, if Vanessa ever shows you a photograph of your father signing another will, do not believe her.

The man standing beside him was the reason I became afraid for Lily.

I looked up.

Vanessa was no longer smiling.

And Daniel was already reaching for his phone.

May you like

Because beneath the photograph, in tiny print, was a date.

A date that proved the document had been signed after my father was already dead.
