Chapter 6: The Lockbox Sarah Left Behind
The lockbox was waiting in Daniel's office safe.
It was small, made of dark wood, and secured with an old brass lock.
When Daniel placed it on his desk, Lily immediately recognized the ribbon attached to the key.
"That's Mommy's," she whispered.
I crouched beside her.
"Did Mommy tell you anything else about it?""
Lily nodded.
"She said it was a treasure box.""
"What kind of treasure?""
"Something more important than money.""
I felt my throat tighten.
Sarah had always been good at making ordinary things feel special.
She used to hide little notes inside Lily's schoolbag. She'd leave chocolate coins beneath pillows and tell her that every child deserved a secret treasure.
But this was different.
This was something she had planned carefully.
Daniel inserted the key.
It turned with a soft click.
Inside were three envelopes, a small black flash drive, and a photograph of Sarah holding Lily in the hospital.
On the back of the photograph, Sarah had written:
For the day my little girl is old enough to understand.
I opened the first envelope.
It contained a handwritten note.
Michael,
If you are reading this, then Lily has given you the key. I hope you have protected her. I hope she has been loved.
I stopped.
Daniel quietly moved a box of tissues closer.
I continued.
I have tried to prepare for every possibility, but there is one thing I cannot control: what happens after I am gone.
Please don't blame yourself for trusting people. You cannot build a family while believing everyone is waiting to hurt you.
I swallowed.
Then I read the next line.
But I need you to know that Vanessa's involvement with Northbridge began long before my illness.
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded for me to continue.
I discovered that Vanessa had been sharing confidential family information with Richard Hale for years. She was not simply interested in Lily's inheritance. She was interested in gaining influence over the entire Carter company.
She believed that if she could gain control of the shares held for Lily, she could eventually place Brandon in a position of authority.
My jaw tightened.
I confronted her. She told me I was being unreasonable. She said Brandon deserved the opportunities Lily would inherit.
When I refused to cooperate, she began asking questions about my health, my medication, and whether I was capable of making decisions.
I looked down.
Sarah had been fighting cancer.
And while she was trying to survive, Vanessa had been preparing to take control of our daughter's future.
I continued reading.
There is something else you need to understand.
Richard Hale has been working with someone inside your company.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who?""
I turned the page.
The name was written clearly.
*Andrew Mitchell.*
My chief financial officer.
I stared at it.
Andrew had worked for me for eleven years.
He had attended my wedding.
He had delivered flowers when Sarah was hospitalized.
He had once driven Lily home from school when I was stuck in a meeting.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Daniel studied the page.
"Sarah must have had a reason to include him.""
I looked at the next paragraph.
Andrew has access to internal financial records, company voting information, and confidential correspondence. I found evidence that he has been providing Northbridge with information about the Carter family's assets.
I don't know how far his involvement goes.
But I believe he helped create the documents Vanessa is now trying to use.
I lowered the letter.
Andrew.
The man I trusted to oversee every major financial decision in my company.
I felt suddenly sick.
Daniel opened the second envelope.
Inside was a list of transaction dates and account references.
He scanned the pages.
"This is substantial.""
"What is it?""
"Transfers from a dormant company account. Several payments were made to an offshore consulting firm.""
"Who authorized them?""
Daniel pointed to the bottom of the page.
"Andrew Mitchell.""
I stood.
"I need to call him.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"He's stealing from my company.""
"And if he is involved in this scheme, calling him will give him an opportunity to destroy evidence.""
I paced across the office.
"He's been sitting in meetings with me for years.""
"Then he's had years to learn how you operate.""
I stopped.
"How do we catch him?""
Daniel tapped the papers.
"We don't warn him. We let him believe everything is proceeding normally while we secure the records.""
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting quietly in the corner, drawing on a sheet of paper.
I walked over.
"What are you drawing, sweetheart?""
She held up the page.
It showed three people standing beneath a yellow sun.
Me.
Sarah.
And Lily.
But there was another person drawn at the far edge.
A woman with dark hair.
I recognized Vanessa's shape.
"Who's that?""
Lily looked down.
"Grandma.""
"Why is she so far away?""
"Mommy said some people can love you and still do bad things.""
I felt a lump rise in my throat.
"She told you that?""
Lily nodded.
"She said I should always remember that being family doesn't mean someone gets to hurt me.""
I kissed the top of her head.
"Your mother was right.""
By noon, Daniel had arranged an emergency meeting with the company's independent board members.
I wanted to confront Andrew immediately.
Instead, I followed Daniel's instructions.
We requested an internal audit of the offshore payments and temporarily suspended Andrew's access to sensitive trust-related records.
I also asked the board to authorize an independent investigation.
One member, Margaret Lewis, looked particularly concerned.
"Michael, are you saying someone inside the company may have attempted to transfer voting rights belonging to your daughter?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"I believe Andrew Mitchell may be involved.""
Margaret leaned back.
"Andrew has been with us for eleven years.""
"I know.""
"He's handled every major acquisition.""
"I know that, too.""
She studied my face.
"Do you have evidence?""
I placed Sarah's documents on the table.
"Enough to justify an investigation.""
Margaret read the first page.
Then the second.
Her expression became increasingly troubled.
"This is serious.""
"Very.""
She looked at the other board members.
"I recommend immediate suspension of Andrew's access pending review.""
The motion passed.
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I felt as though I had just discovered that half the people in my life were strangers.
At three that afternoon, my phone rang.
Andrew.
I stared at his name.
Daniel gestured for me to answer.
"Michael! I've been trying to reach you.""
His voice sounded unusually cheerful.
"What's going on?""
"I heard there was an emergency board meeting.""
"Yes.""
"Is everything all right?""
I looked at Daniel.
"We're reviewing some financial irregularities.""
There was a pause.
"What kind of irregularities?""
"Payments to an offshore consulting company.""
Andrew laughed lightly.
"That's probably the Northbridge advisory account. We discussed that months ago.""
"Did we?""
"Of course. You approved the preliminary arrangement.""
"I don't remember.""
His voice became cautious.
"Michael, you've had a difficult year. Sarah's passing, the company pressure, everything. Perhaps you're confusing it with another transaction.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did you ever discuss Lily's trust with Richard Hale?""
Silence.
Then Andrew said, "Why would I?""
"That's what I'm asking.""
"I think you should be careful about who you're listening to.""
"Why?""
"Because there are people who would love to see Carter Development fall apart.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was writing something.
Andrew continued.
"Let me come by your office tomorrow. We'll go through everything together.""
"Your access has been suspended.""
The silence that followed was longer.
"What?""
"Until the investigation is complete.""
Andrew's cheerful tone disappeared.
"Michael, you cannot be serious.""
"I'm completely serious.""
"After eleven years?""
"That's why I expected honesty.""
He exhaled sharply.
"You're making a mistake.""
"Maybe.""
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Sarah made the same mistake.""
I froze.
"What did you just say?""
Andrew went quiet.
Then he cleared his throat.
"I meant Sarah was too suspicious of people. She made everything difficult.""
"How do you know what Sarah suspected?""
He didn't answer.
I ended the call.
Daniel stared at me.
"He knows.""
"Yes.""
"Or he knows more than he's admitting.""
Before I could respond, Daniel's assistant rushed into the room.
"Mr. Brooks, there's a problem.""
Daniel stood.
"What?""
"Someone just attempted to access the trust account using an emergency administrator credential.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Who?""
The assistant handed him a printed alert.
The attempted login had originated from the Carter Development headquarters.
The account holder was Andrew Mitchell.
But the most disturbing part was the timestamp.
The login had occurred after his access was suspended.
Daniel immediately called the bank's security department.
I looked at the alert.
"He's trying to get in.""
"Yes," Daniel replied.
"Can they stop him?""
"They've frozen the attempted transaction.""
I leaned against the desk.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
*You should have left the lockbox alone.*
A second message appeared.
*Your daughter is not the only person who knows where Sarah kept the originals.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel read over my shoulder.
"Don't respond.""
I typed nothing.
Another message arrived.
This time, it contained a photograph.
It showed Lily standing outside the school playground.
Taken that morning.
She was holding her pink backpack.
The picture had clearly been taken from across the street.
My entire body went cold.
"Daniel.""
He took the phone.
His face hardened.
"We're contacting the police immediately.""
I called Detective Harris.
She answered on the second ring.
"Detective, someone has been photographing my daughter.""
"Where?""
I explained.
She told me not to return to the house or take Lily anywhere without informing her.
Within minutes, officers were reviewing the school's security footage.
One camera captured a dark SUV parked across the street.
The driver was wearing a baseball cap.
The license plate was partially obscured.
But the passenger window was open.
And someone inside had been holding a camera.
That evening, Lily and I were staying in a secure hotel arranged through Daniel.
She was watching cartoons while I sat at the desk reviewing Sarah's remaining papers.
Then she walked over.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Can I ask something?""
"Anything.""
"Why is everybody fighting about Mommy's money?""
I turned away from the documents.
"Because some people want things that don't belong to them.""
"Like Brandon's toys?""
I almost smiled.
"Something like that.""
She climbed into the chair beside me.
"Mommy said money isn't what makes a family.""
I nodded.
"She was right.""
"Then why do they want it so much?""
I didn't know how to explain greed to an eight-year-old.
So I told her the truth.
"Because sometimes grown-ups forget what matters.""
Lily thought about that.
Then she reached into her backpack.
"I found something.""
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was an old drawing.
Sarah had written a date in the corner.
The date was from three days before her final hospital admission.
I looked closer.
There was a picture of a house.
Underneath it, Sarah had written:
For Lily. When the time is right.
Lily pointed at the drawing.
"Mommy told me to remember the little room.""
I stared at her.
"What little room?""
"The one behind the library.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
Our house had a small reading room connected to the main library. Sarah had used it as a private writing space.
I hadn't entered it since she died.
"What about it?""
"Mommy said there was something important behind the blue bookshelf.""
I looked at the drawing again.
Then I noticed a small symbol in the bottom corner.
A key.
The same key symbol engraved on the lockbox.
I called Daniel.
"There's another hiding place.""
He was silent for a moment.
"Where?""
"Sarah's reading room. Behind the blue bookshelf.""
"Michael, don't go there alone.""
"I'm not.""
We arrived at the house shortly before midnight with Detective Harris and two officers.
Vanessa was no longer there. She had been ordered to remain available during the investigation, and her access to the property had been restricted.
The house felt different without her.
Quieter.
But not peaceful.
I walked into the library.
The blue bookshelf stood against the far wall.
Sarah had chosen it herself. She loved the color and used to joke that the shelves made the room look like a tiny bookstore.
I ran my fingers along the wood.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a small brass plate near the bottom.
The key symbol was engraved into it.
I pressed the center.
A hidden panel clicked.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Inside sat a black leather folder and a sealed envelope.
I removed both.
The envelope had one sentence written across the front.
*Michael, this is the truth I couldn't tell you while I was alive.*
My hands began shaking.
I opened it.
The first page contained a statement written in Sarah's handwriting.
I need you to know that Vanessa did not begin this scheme alone.
Your father knew what was happening.
I stopped breathing.
The next sentence was even worse.
He was the one who introduced Richard Hale to Vanessa.
I looked at Daniel.
He had gone completely still.
I turned the page.
And if anyone tells you that Robert Carter died without knowing what Northbridge intended to do, they are lying.
At the bottom of the page was a final paragraph.
Michael, there is a reason I never told you this before.
Your father was not the only person in our family who wanted Lily's inheritance.
I stared at the words.
Then I opened the leather folder.
Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.
The name of the child was familiar.
Brandon Carter.
But the father's name was not Robert Carter.
It was a man I had never heard of.
*Richard Hale.*
I looked at the document again.
Then I heard Detective Harris whisper behind me.
"Michael, I think we just discovered why Vanessa was so desperate to get control of your daughter's trust.""
May you like
Because Brandon wasn't my father's biological grandson.
And the man helping Vanessa steal Lily's inheritance was apparently his father.
