Amused

Chapter 1: The Man at the Door

The front door opened.

Emily lifted her head so quickly that pain shot through her neck.

For one desperate second, she thought Vanessa had finally changed her mind. Perhaps she was going to return her phone. Perhaps she was going to let Emily back inside before the temperature dropped any further.

But the person standing in the doorway wasn't Vanessa.

It was an older man wearing a navy work jacket, holding a paper grocery bag in one hand.

Mr. Raymond Carter.

Their next-door neighbor.

He stared at Emily sitting on the cold porch, then looked toward the hallway behind him.

"Emily? What on earth are you doing out here?""

Emily struggled to stand.

"Mr. Carter, I—"

"Good Lord. You're freezing.""

He put the grocery bag down and immediately removed his jacket.

Before Emily could protest, he draped it over her shoulders.

"Where's your father?""

Emily swallowed.

"He's not home.""

"And Vanessa?""

Emily looked toward the door.

"She's inside.""

Raymond's eyebrows pulled together.

"Did she lock you out?""

Emily hesitated.

She could still hear Vanessa's earlier words.

Michael won't believe you.

The fear of being called dramatic, ungrateful, or difficult had followed her for so long that even now, with her fingers numb and her clothes damp, she struggled to explain what had happened.

"She said I couldn't stay here anymore.""

Raymond looked at the house.

"Your father's house?""

Emily nodded.

"She took my phone, too.""

That changed his expression.

"She took your phone?""

"She said Dad wouldn't believe me if I called him.""

Raymond stared at her for several seconds.

Then he stepped inside the doorway.

"Stay right here.""

"Mr. Carter, please don't make things worse.""

He stopped.

"Emily, sweetheart, you're sitting outside in November without a coat. I think things are already bad enough.""

He disappeared inside.

Emily heard his voice carrying through the hallway.

"Vanessa?""

A pause.

Then Vanessa answered.

"Raymond. What a surprise.""

"Why is Emily sitting outside?""

"That's a private family matter.""

"She's your husband's daughter.""

"Exactly. A family matter.""

Raymond appeared again, his expression darker.

"Open the door and give her belongings back.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

"Emily is twenty-five years old. She's perfectly capable of finding somewhere else to live.""

"Then why did you take her phone?""

Silence.

Emily leaned toward the glass panel.

Vanessa stepped into view.

She had changed her expression. The cold, triumphant smile was gone. In its place was the pleasant, carefully rehearsed face she wore whenever someone outside the family was watching.

"Raymond, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Emily and I had a disagreement. She's being emotional.""

"Then give her phone back.""

"She needs to learn some independence.""

"She can learn that without being left outside in the cold.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I don't appreciate you interfering.""

Raymond took a breath.

"Neither do I appreciate finding a young woman shivering on her own porch.""

Vanessa glanced at Emily.

"Emily, come on. Stop making a spectacle.""

Emily stared at her.

"You locked me out.""

"I told you the arrangement was over.""

"Where am I supposed to go?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"That's not my problem.""

Raymond's jaw tightened.

"Michael will want to hear about this.""

For the first time, Vanessa's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Emily noticed.

"Michael is working," Vanessa replied.

"He doesn't need to be bothered with another one of Emily's performances.""

"Then I'm sure he won't mind hearing about it from me.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Raymond, I would strongly suggest you stay out of this.""

He held her gaze.

"And I would strongly suggest you open that door.""

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Vanessa stepped backward.

The door slammed shut again.

Raymond shook his head.

"Unbelievable.""

He turned to Emily.

"Come on. You're coming to my house.""

Emily looked down at the jacket around her shoulders.

"I can't leave. My purse is inside.""

"We'll deal with that.""

"My keys, my wallet, everything...""

"Emily.""

He crouched slightly so she could see his face.

"You're not going to freeze on this porch because someone inside that house has decided to be cruel.""

Her eyes filled.

"I don't want Dad to think I abandoned the house.""

Raymond's expression softened.

"Your father knows you better than that.""

Emily wasn't sure anymore.

But she followed him.

His house was only a few steps away. Warm light spilled through the kitchen windows, and the smell of roasted chicken drifted into the driveway.

His wife, Margaret, opened the door before they reached the steps.

"Raymond? What's going on?""

Then she saw Emily.

"Oh, honey.""

Margaret immediately pulled her inside.

She brought a blanket, made tea, and placed a plate of food on the kitchen table.

Emily sat silently, her hands wrapped around the warm mug.

Margaret examined her damp sneakers.

"Did Vanessa really put you outside like that?""

Emily nodded.

"She took my phone, too.""

Margaret looked at her husband.

"Call Michael.""

Raymond reached for his cell phone.

"I was about to.""

Emily shook her head.

"Please don't.""

Both neighbors looked at her.

"Why not?"" Margaret asked gently.

"Because she'll tell him I started it. She'll say I was disrespectful. She always does.""

Raymond sat across from her.

"Emily, has this happened before?""

She stared into her tea.

"Not like this.""

"Then what happened before?""

Emily rubbed her thumb against the mug.

"She used to tell Dad I was wasting money. Then she said I was taking advantage of him. When I got a job interview, she told him I wasn't serious about working because I hadn't accepted a position yet.""

"Did he believe her?""

"Sometimes.""

The last word came out quietly.

Margaret pulled a chair closer.

"What do you mean, sometimes?""

Emily looked toward the window.

"She knows how to make everything sound different when Dad isn't around.""

She explained how Vanessa had gradually taken control of the household.

At first, it had been small things.

Emily's mother's photographs disappeared from the hallway. Her father's mail began arriving in Vanessa's office. Conversations between Emily and Michael were interrupted by sudden emergencies or complaints.

Then Vanessa began telling Michael that Emily was becoming difficult.

Whenever Emily objected, Vanessa would become tearful.

And somehow, Emily always ended up apologizing.

Raymond listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he took out his phone.

"I'm calling Michael.""

Emily stared at him.

"Please don't put him in the middle.""

"He's already in the middle. He just doesn't know it yet.""

He dialed.

The call rang four times.

Then a familiar voice answered.

"Raymond? Everything okay?""

Raymond looked directly at Emily.

"No, Michael. It isn't.""

A pause.

"What happened?""

"Your daughter is sitting in my kitchen because your wife threw her out of your house.""

Silence.

Then Michael spoke.

"What?""

"Vanessa locked her outside. She took Emily's phone and refused to let her retrieve her belongings.""

"That's not possible.""

Raymond's eyebrows rose.

"I'm looking at her right now.""

"Where is Vanessa?""

"Inside your house, apparently.""

Michael exhaled sharply.

"Raymond, I don't know what Emily told you, but there have been some issues lately.""

Raymond leaned forward.

"Then you should probably come home and hear both sides.""

Another pause.

"Is Emily there?""

Emily reached for the phone.

"Dad?""

His voice changed immediately.

"Emily? Sweetheart?""

She closed her eyes.

"Dad, I didn't do anything.""

"What's going on?""

"She pushed me outside. She took my phone. She said I couldn't live there anymore.""

"Why would Vanessa do that?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you two have an argument?""

Emily's fingers tightened around the mug.

"Yes. But I didn't do anything to deserve this.""

Michael was quiet.

Then he said something that made her stomach sink.

"Emily, you know how Vanessa gets when she feels disrespected. Maybe you should have given her some space.""

Emily stared at the table.

Raymond looked furious.

"Michael, are you seriously defending this?""

"I'm not defending anybody. I just want to understand.""

"Then come home.""

"I'll be there in an hour.""

The call ended.

Emily handed the phone back to Raymond.

She didn't cry.

She simply looked at the plate of food Margaret had prepared and realized she had suddenly lost her appetite.

Margaret reached across the table and covered her hand.

"Your father will come around.""

Emily nodded.

But she wasn't convinced.

An hour later, headlights swept across the Carter family's front windows.

A familiar black SUV pulled into the driveway.

Emily stood.

Her heart hammered.

Michael stepped out wearing his gray business suit, his tie loosened and his face tight with worry.

He crossed the lawn quickly.

"Emily!""

She opened the door before he could knock.

"Dad.""

He pulled her into a hug.

For several seconds, she held on to him as if she were twelve years old again.

Then he stepped back and examined the blanket around her shoulders.

"Are you okay?""

"I think so.""

He looked toward Raymond.

"Thank you for taking care of her.""

Raymond nodded.

"You're welcome. Now let's get something straight.""

Michael's expression tightened.

"What's that?""

"Your daughter should never have been left outside like that.""

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he turned toward the house across the lawn.

"Come on, Emily. Let's get your things.""

Emily followed him.

When they reached the front door, Vanessa was waiting.

Her copper-brown hair was perfectly arranged. She wore a cream blouse and held a glass of red wine.

"Michael, darling.""

She approached him and kissed his cheek.

Then she looked at Emily.

"I see you've had quite an adventure.""

Michael didn't smile.

"Vanessa, why was Emily outside?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Because she refused to respect the rules of this household.""

"What rules?""

"Michael, please. I don't want to discuss this in front of the neighbors.""

"Then we can discuss it inside.""

Vanessa glanced at Emily.

"She was being aggressive. She raised her voice, insulted me, and threatened to make trouble.""

Emily stared at her.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa lifted one hand.

"See? This is exactly what I'm talking about.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Both of you, stop.""

Vanessa approached him.

"I've been trying to maintain some peace here, Michael. Your daughter is an adult, but she expects me to cook for her, clean up after her, and tolerate her attitude.""

"I never asked you to do those things," Emily replied.

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't interrupt.""

Michael looked at his daughter.

"Emily, let her finish.""

Emily went silent.

Vanessa continued.

"I told her she needed to start making plans to move out. She became hysterical, grabbed her phone, and threatened to call you.""

"Because you took it!"" Emily said.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Michael raised his voice.

"Emily!""

The word landed like a slap.

Emily stepped backward.

Vanessa lowered her gaze and dabbed at the corner of one eye.

"I don't know how much more of this I can take.""

Michael wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

Emily watched him do it.

And something inside her quietly cracked.

She had imagined her father coming home, hearing the truth, and immediately understanding.

Instead, he was comforting the woman who had thrown her out.

"Can I at least get my purse?"" Emily asked.

Michael looked at her.

"Of course. Go upstairs and collect your things.""

Vanessa suddenly straightened.

"Actually, Michael, there's something you need to know.""

He turned.

"What?""

Vanessa looked directly at Emily.

"She hasn't been entirely honest about why she's still living here.""

Emily froze.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa reached for a folder on the hallway table.

She opened it and removed a printed document.

Then she handed it to Michael.

"I found this in her bedroom.""

Michael looked down.

His face changed.

Emily took one step forward.

"What is that?""

May you like

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Maybe you should ask your daughter why she's been secretly planning to sell something that doesn't belong to her.""
