Amused

Chapter 7: The Secret Her Father Buried

Michael didn't move.

Vanessa stood at the bottom of the staircase, one hand gripping the handle of her suitcase.

Emily looked between them.

"What did she mean, Dad?""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"Nothing.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Nothing? After all these years, that's what you're going to call it?""

"Vanessa, stop.""

"No. I'm tired of being the only person blamed for everything.""

Emily stepped forward.

"You stole money from my mother's account. You tried to put Dad's house in your company. You forged documents. What else is there to explain?""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Your mother wasn't the saint you think she was.""

"Don't talk about her.""

"Then ask your father.""

Michael's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Go upstairs.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You still don't understand, do you? Claire made sure you would spend the rest of your life feeling guilty if you ever questioned her.""

Michael clenched his jaw.

"Enough.""

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

"Fine. I'll leave. But don't come looking for me when you discover that your precious wife left you with a mess long before I ever arrived.""

She walked toward the door.

Michael didn't stop her.

Emily watched as Vanessa opened it.

Just before stepping outside, Vanessa turned around.

"Oh, and Michael?""

He looked up.

"Ask Margaret about the original investment account. Ask her who received the first two hundred thousand dollars.""

Then she walked out.

The door closed.

Emily stood in the hallway, listening to Vanessa's footsteps disappear down the porch.

For several seconds, she could hear nothing but the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Then she turned toward her father.

"What happened?""

Michael walked into the living room.

He lowered himself into his recliner and stared at the photograph of Claire on the mantel.

"I made a mistake.""

Emily followed him.

"What mistake?""

He rubbed his face.

"Before your mother got sick, we invested in a development project.""

"What kind of project?""

"A commercial property near downtown Atlanta. Your mother had found an opportunity through someone she trusted.""

"Was it successful?""

Michael shook his head.

"No.""

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"We lost almost two hundred thousand dollars.""

Emily frowned.

"But Mom had a separate account.""

"That money came later.""

He looked at her.

"Your grandparents had left her an inheritance. She used part of it to cover the investment loss.""

Emily stared.

"Why?""

"Because I had borrowed against our savings to fund the project. When it failed, I was terrified of telling her how much we'd lost.""

"You hid it from her?""

Michael nodded.

"I thought I could replace the money before she found out.""

Emily felt a knot form in her stomach.

"Dad, why would you do that?""

"Because I was embarrassed. I had convinced myself I was making the right decision for our family.""

He looked toward the window.

"Claire eventually discovered everything. She was furious. Not because we lost the money, but because I had hidden it.""

Emily sat on the sofa.

"What happened after that?""

"We argued. She said I had allowed my pride to become more important than our marriage.""

Michael's voice cracked.

"She was right.""

Emily watched him.

For years, she had imagined her parents' marriage as something almost perfect.

She remembered laughter in the kitchen, weekend trips, and her father bringing flowers home every Friday.

She hadn't known about the financial disaster.

"Did Mom forgive you?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"Eventually.""

"Then why did Vanessa bring it up?""

Michael stared at the carpet.

"Because I think she found the old investment records.""

Emily shook her head.

"That doesn't explain why she took my money.""

"No.""

"Or why she tried to transfer the house.""

"No.""

"Or why she made it look like I was stealing.""

Michael looked up.

"I know.""

Emily's eyes filled.

"Then why does she keep making us feel like we're the ones who did something wrong?""

Michael reached for her hand.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

But Emily wasn't satisfied.

"You're leaving something out.""

Michael didn't respond.

She stood.

"Mom's letter said she made arrangements to protect me. Vanessa knew about the trust. Patricia knew about the documents. Daniel was involved years ago.""

She paused.

"How could all of these people know things that you didn't?""

Michael looked down.

Then he finally spoke.

"Because I wasn't paying attention.""

The following morning, Michael called Margaret.

She arrived at the house shortly before ten, carrying a leather briefcase.

Emily sat beside her father at the dining table.

Margaret placed several documents on the table.

"I've been reviewing Claire's estate records.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Did you find anything about the original investment?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

She opened a folder.

"Claire didn't simply cover the losses from her inheritance. She also obtained a written agreement from the investment partner.""

Michael frowned.

"What agreement?""

"A repayment agreement.""

Emily looked up.

"Someone owed Mom money?""

"Yes. The investment partner acknowledged responsibility for a portion of the loss and agreed to repay it over time.""

Michael stared at the document.

"Who was the partner?""

Margaret turned the page.

"Daniel Price.""

Silence.

Emily looked at her father.

"The attorney?""

Margaret nodded.

"He was involved in the original development project. At the time, he wasn't acting as an attorney. He was an investor and business adviser.""

Michael leaned back.

"Why didn't I know this?""

"You did, Michael. You signed the original investment documents.""

He looked at the paper.

Then he recognized his signature.

His face tightened.

"I remember.""

Margaret continued.

"Daniel agreed to repay approximately one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Claire placed the repayment rights into a separate trust arrangement.""

Emily frowned.

"Does that mean he still owes the money?""

"According to the records, yes.""

Margaret placed another document beside the first.

"However, the repayment agreement was transferred several years later.""

Michael looked confused.

"Transferred to whom?""

Margaret turned the page.

"Vantage Property Holdings.""

Emily stared.

"Vanessa's company?""

"Yes.""

Michael stood so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.

"Why would Claire transfer the debt to Vanessa?""

Margaret shook her head.

"She didn't.""

She pointed to the document.

"The transfer was executed two years after Claire died.""

Michael looked at the signature.

It was supposed to be Claire's.

But Claire had been dead for two years when the document was dated.

Emily felt sick.

"Someone forged Mom's signature.""

Margaret nodded.

"That appears to be the case.""

Michael gripped the edge of the table.

"So Vanessa acquired the right to collect the money Daniel owed Claire?""

"That's what the document claims.""

Emily stared at the papers.

"Wait. If Daniel owed Mom money, why was Vanessa borrowing money against Dad's house?""

Margaret looked at her.

"Because the repayment agreement may have been used to secure another transaction.""

She removed another sheet.

The document showed that Vantage Property Holdings had assigned its claimed repayment rights to a private lender.

In return, the company received a substantial loan.

Emily read the amount.

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

Margaret nodded.

"Approximately.""

Michael's expression darkened.

"So Daniel owed Claire money, Vanessa somehow claimed the debt, and then used it to obtain another loan?""

"That's one possible explanation. We still need the full financial records.""

Emily looked at Margaret.

"Can we prove Vanessa forged Mom's signature?""

"We can request an independent handwriting examination. We also have Claire's original signatures in the estate file.""

Michael sat down.

"Then do it.""

Margaret nodded.

"I've already contacted the appropriate specialists.""

She closed the folder.

"But there's another issue.""

Michael looked up.

"What now?""

"Daniel Price was not simply involved in the original investment. He also witnessed the documents Vanessa used to obtain the loan against your house.""

Emily's stomach tightened.

"He's been helping her.""

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"I believe we need to treat this as a coordinated financial scheme rather than an isolated family dispute.""

That afternoon, Michael received a call from an unfamiliar number.

He answered on speaker.

"Hello?""

A man's voice responded.

"Mr. Turner, this is Daniel Price.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"What do you want?""

"I understand you're asking questions about the Vantage transaction.""

"I'm asking questions about my house.""

Daniel sighed.

"I think there has been some confusion.""

"You witnessed documents with signatures that weren't mine.""

"Those documents were presented to me as properly executed.""

"By Vanessa?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Did you know the signatures were false?""

"I cannot discuss privileged matters.""

"You're not my attorney.""

Daniel said nothing.

Michael continued.

"You also received money from my wife's original investment.""

Another pause.

"That was a business arrangement.""

"Then explain why you transferred the repayment agreement to Vantage.""

"That matter is complicated.""

"Try me.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Mr. Turner, I suggest you stop making accusations without understanding the full circumstances.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"Someone used my house to secure a loan I never approved. My daughter's savings account has been emptied. My wife's signature was forged after she died. I think I understand enough.""

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

"Perhaps you should ask your wife why she kept the original correspondence.""

Michael frowned.

"What correspondence?""

"The emails between Claire and Vanessa.""

Emily looked at her father.

Daniel continued.

"Your wife knew Vanessa was involved in the original investment long before the property transfer documents were prepared.""

Michael's face went pale.

"That's impossible.""

"Ask Margaret.""

The call ended.

Emily stared at her father.

"What emails?""

Michael immediately called Margaret.

When she answered, he put the phone on speaker.

"Margaret, do you have any correspondence between Claire and Vanessa?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because the correspondence was sealed under Claire's instructions.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"What's in it?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Claire believed Vanessa had been involved in the original investment from the beginning.""

Emily felt her stomach drop.

"From the beginning?""

"Yes," Margaret answered.

"Not as your father's wife. As someone connected to the development company.""

Michael slowly sat down.

The house was quiet.

Then Margaret added:

"Michael, I think you should know something else.""

"What?""

"Claire didn't lose two hundred thousand dollars because of a failed investment.""

Emily stared at the phone.

Margaret's next words were almost a whisper.

"She lost it because someone deliberately moved the money before the development company collapsed.""

May you like

Michael looked at his daughter.

And suddenly, the secret Vanessa had been using to frighten him seemed much darker than either of them had imagined.
