Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Money
Margaret arrived the next morning with a second briefcase.
This time, she didn't sit down immediately.
She locked the front door, checked the windows, and placed her phone face down on the dining table.
Michael watched her.
"What's going on?""
Margaret opened her briefcase.
"Before we discuss anything, I want both of you to understand that Claire's records contain sensitive financial information. I need you to see the documents in context.""
Emily nodded.
"Okay.""
Margaret removed a thick envelope.
It was marked:
*TURNER DEVELOPMENT — ORIGINAL INVESTMENT FILE.*
Michael recognized the company name.
He rubbed his forehead.
"I haven't seen that in years.""
Margaret placed the envelope between them.
"Claire asked me to preserve this file because she believed someone might eventually try to rewrite what happened.""
Emily looked at her father.
"What was Turner Development?""
Michael explained.
"It was a small commercial development company. We were going to renovate an old property and turn it into offices and retail space.""
"Was Mom involved?""
"She handled the financial planning.""
Margaret nodded.
"Claire was actually the person who identified the opportunity.""
She opened the envelope.
Inside were contracts, bank statements, and correspondence.
"Your father provided the initial capital. Claire arranged additional financing. Daniel Price handled negotiations with contractors and investors.""
Emily examined the first page.
"Where does Vanessa come into this?""
Margaret turned to another document.
"Vanessa was employed by the company as an administrative coordinator.""
Michael frowned.
"She told me she worked in property management.""
"She did. For the development company.""
Emily looked at her father.
"Did you know Vanessa before Mom died?""
Michael hesitated.
"Not personally.""
Margaret corrected him.
"Michael, you met her twice during the project.""
He stared at her.
"I did?""
"Yes. She attended two meetings with Daniel.""
Michael looked genuinely confused.
Margaret placed a photograph on the table.
It showed four people standing in front of an unfinished commercial building.
Michael was on the left.
Claire stood beside him.
Daniel was on the right.
And behind them was a younger Vanessa.
Emily picked up the photograph.
"That's her.""
Michael looked at it for a long time.
"I don't remember this.""
Margaret spoke gently.
"You were dealing with the contractors. Vanessa handled paperwork. Claire was the one who dealt with her directly.""
Emily turned the photograph over.
A handwritten date appeared on the back.
Eight years before Claire's death.
"Mom knew her before she married you.""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
Michael leaned back.
"How did I never know?""
Margaret looked at him.
"Because by the time you began dating Vanessa, she presented herself as someone you had met only briefly.""
Michael covered his face.
Emily looked at the photograph again.
Something didn't make sense.
"Why would Mom keep this?""
"Because she believed Vanessa had information about the missing money.""
Margaret opened a bank statement.
She pointed to a transfer.
"Three weeks before the development company collapsed, two hundred thousand dollars was moved into an account controlled by a consulting firm.""
Michael leaned closer.
"Who owned the firm?""
Margaret turned the page.
The name was visible.
*WELLS CONSULTING GROUP.*
Emily looked up.
"Patricia?""
Margaret nodded.
"Patricia Wells.""
Michael shook his head.
"Vanessa's friend.""
"Correct.""
Margaret continued.
"The consulting company received the money under the description of project management services. However, no invoices or work records supported the transfer.""
Emily frowned.
"So Mom discovered Patricia took the money?""
"She discovered that the money had been moved through a company connected to Patricia. She did not know whether Patricia was acting independently or following someone else's instructions.""
Michael stared at the bank statement.
"And Vanessa?""
Margaret pointed to a signature on the transfer authorization.
"She approved the payment.""
Emily's mouth fell open.
"She was involved in the original theft?""
Margaret chose her words carefully.
"The documents strongly suggest she authorized the transfer. But the full chain of responsibility needs to be established.""
Michael stood.
He walked to the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he turned.
"Why did Claire never tell me?""
Margaret's expression softened.
"She tried.""
Michael looked at her.
"What?""
"She called me after discovering the transfer. She wanted to confront you, but she was afraid of what the investigation would do to your marriage and your financial stability.""
"She should have told me.""
"She believed you would blame yourself.""
Michael looked down.
Margaret continued.
"Claire also discovered that the money had been used to fund another property purchase. She was preparing to challenge the transaction when her health deteriorated.""
Emily swallowed.
"Did Mom know she was going to die?""
Margaret nodded slowly.
"She knew her condition was serious.""
Emily looked at the photograph.
Her mother had been smiling in it.
Young.
Healthy.
Standing beside the building she had helped create.
"Did she ever get the money back?""
Margaret shook her head.
"No. But she secured a repayment agreement against Daniel and preserved the evidence of the original transfers.""
Michael turned toward her.
"Then why did Vanessa get access to everything after Claire died?""
"She didn't have legal access. She gained access because she was part of your household and because you trusted her.""
Michael sat down.
Margaret continued.
"After Claire's death, Vanessa began requesting information about the trust. She also contacted Patricia.""
Emily's voice was quiet.
"She married Dad to get the house?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I cannot establish that from the documents alone.""
Emily looked down.
But the possibility was difficult to ignore.
That afternoon, Emily received an email from the bank.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: ACCOUNT ACCESS REVIEW.*
She opened it.
The bank had identified several logins from a device that wasn't hers.
The first login occurred eighteen months earlier.
The device was registered under Vanessa's email address.
Emily read the details twice.
Then she called Margaret.
"She accessed my account.""
Margaret asked her to forward the email.
After reviewing it, she called back.
"Emily, I need you to come to my office.""
"Why?""
"Because the bank has identified a second authorized user.""
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
"Who?""
"Patricia Wells.""
Emily closed her eyes.
The same two women.
The same names appearing on every suspicious document.
When Emily arrived at Margaret's office, Michael was already there.
Margaret placed the bank's report on the table.
"The account was accessed using two separate devices. One belonged to Vanessa. The other was registered to Patricia's consulting business.""
Michael looked furious.
"How did they get permission?""
Margaret pointed to an authorization form.
"Someone submitted this document.""
Emily examined it.
Her signature was there.
But the date was from a period when she had been living in another city for a temporary training program.
"I wasn't even here.""
Michael looked up.
"Can you prove that?""
Emily nodded.
"I have my employment records. I was working in Savannah that month.""
Margaret made a note.
"Good. We will need those.""
Emily looked at the bank transactions.
"Where did the money go?""
Margaret turned to the next page.
"Some payments went to Vantage Property Holdings. Others went to a private account.""
"Whose account?""
Margaret hesitated.
Then she pointed to the beneficiary name.
*PATRICIA WELLS.*
Michael stood.
"She took my daughter's money?""
Margaret nodded.
"At least some of it was transferred to her.""
Emily stared at the screen.
Her mother had saved that money for her.
Vanessa had told her she was selfish for living in the house.
She had made Emily feel guilty for asking for help.
All while quietly draining the account that Claire had created to protect her.
Emily's voice trembled.
"Why would they do this to me?""
Margaret looked at her.
"Because you were the person the money was intended to protect.""
Michael placed both hands on the table.
"Then we report everything.""
Margaret nodded.
"I've already prepared the necessary notices.""
At four o'clock, Michael received another call.
This time, it was Vanessa.
He put it on speaker.
"Hello?""
Her voice sounded different.
Less confident.
"Michael, I need to see you.""
"About what?""
"Patricia.""
Michael looked at Margaret.
"What about her?""
"She's gone.""
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean, gone?""
Vanessa heard her.
"Emily?""
Michael interrupted.
"Where is Patricia?""
"I don't know. She hasn't answered my calls.""
"Why were you calling her?""
Vanessa was silent.
Then she said:
"Because she has the original bank records.""
Margaret leaned toward the phone.
"Mrs. Turner, this is Margaret Ellis. Do you know where those records are?""
Vanessa sounded startled.
"Margaret?""
"Yes.""
"I thought you weren't involved anymore.""
Margaret's expression hardened.
"I have been involved since Claire appointed me.""
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
"Then you should know that some of those documents were never legitimate.""
"Which documents?""
"The original transfer agreements.""
Michael leaned closer.
"You're saying the documents are fake?""
Vanessa sighed.
"I'm saying Patricia created some of them without telling me.""
Emily stared at the phone.
"You're blaming Patricia now?""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"I didn't ask you to join this conversation.""
Michael interrupted.
"Tell me where she is.""
"I don't know.""
"Why do you have the original records?""
"Because Patricia gave them to me.""
"Why?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Because she said if anything happened to her, I should make sure the truth came out.""
Michael frowned.
"What truth?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Patricia told me Claire knew about the money before the investment collapsed.""
Michael's expression changed.
"She did.""
"No, Michael. You don't understand.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Claire knew exactly where the money went.""
Emily felt her stomach drop.
Margaret sat completely still.
Michael gripped the phone.
"Are you saying Claire participated in the transfer?""
Vanessa answered quietly.
"Patricia says she did.""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa added:
"There's a recording.""
Michael's face went pale.
"What recording?""
"One Patricia kept from a meeting with Claire.""
Emily looked at Margaret.
"Does it exist?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Vanessa continued.
"If you want to know what really happened, meet me tomorrow morning.""
Michael's voice became cold.
"Where?""
"At the old development office.""
"Why there?""
"Because that's where Patricia left the original file.""
Michael glanced at Margaret.
She shook her head.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"And Michael?""
"What?""
"Don't bring Emily.""
Emily immediately stepped forward.
"Why?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Because the recording is about your mother.""
The call ended.
Emily stared at the phone.
Margaret slowly closed the folder.
"Nobody is going to that office without legal representation.""
Michael looked at her.
"What if she's telling the truth?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Then we obtain the recording through proper channels.""
Emily looked at her father.
"Do you believe Mom could have been involved?""
Michael didn't answer.
He stared at the photograph of Claire.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"I don't know what to believe anymore.""
