Chapter 5: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See
Michael placed the metal container on the kitchen counter.
Emily stood beside him, still holding the USB drive.
Neither spoke as he connected it to his laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were three files.
Two were scanned documents.
The third was a video.
The file name was simple.
*For Michael and Emily.*
Michael stared at it.
"Your mother recorded this?""
Emily nodded.
"Maybe before she got too sick.""
He clicked the file.
The screen went black.
Then Claire appeared.
She was sitting in the living room, wearing the blue cardigan she had loved so much. Her hair was shorter than Emily remembered, and her face looked thinner.
But her eyes were bright.
Emily covered her mouth.
"Mom...""
The recording began.
"Michael, if you're watching this, I hope I'm wrong about everything.""
Claire smiled faintly.
"And Emily, sweetheart, if you're beside your father, I want you to know something. None of this is your fault.""
Emily's eyes filled.
Claire continued.
"I've been worried about the way certain financial decisions are being handled. I don't want to accuse anyone unfairly, but I've discovered requests for documents that I never authorized.""
Michael leaned closer to the screen.
Claire looked down at a sheet of paper.
"Three months ago, I discovered that someone had requested information about the property trust. The request was made using a name I recognized.""
She paused.
"Patricia Wells.""
Michael's expression changed.
Emily looked at him.
"That's Vanessa's friend.""
"I know.""
Claire continued.
"Patricia contacted our estate attorney and claimed she was helping with a property assessment. She asked for the original deed and information about the trust beneficiaries.""
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"I never gave her permission.""
The video shifted slightly.
Claire adjusted the camera.
"Michael, I know you trust people easily. That's one of the things I love about you. But please don't confuse kindness with the absence of risk.""
Michael lowered his head.
Claire continued.
"Emily's future is protected by the trust. I made sure of that. The house is not supposed to be transferred to another person or company simply because someone claims it would be more convenient.""
Emily looked at her father.
He was crying silently.
Claire took a breath.
"There is one document I want you to examine carefully. It concerns a proposed change to the trust administration.""
Michael opened the scanned documents.
The first was an estate summary.
The second was a copy of a request to modify the trustee arrangement.
The request had been filed two years earlier.
Michael scanned the page.
His expression turned confused.
"Why is my name here?""
Emily leaned closer.
The document stated that Michael had requested the appointment of Vanessa as an additional authorized trustee.
But the signature looked wrong.
It had the same problem as the signature on the deed transfer.
The final letters were too sharp.
Michael shook his head.
"I never signed this.""
Claire's recorded voice continued.
"I discovered this document after it was sent to our attorney. Margaret told me she rejected it because the signatures did not match the original records.""
Emily looked at the screen.
"Mom knew.""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"She knew someone was trying to change the trust.""
Claire continued.
"I don't know who prepared the document. I don't know whether it was a misunderstanding or something more serious. But I kept a copy.""
She looked down.
Then she smiled.
"Emily, do you remember the summer we planted the roses?""
Emily began crying harder.
"You wanted to put a little sign in the garden that said, 'Always grow toward the light.''"
Claire laughed softly.
"You told me it sounded like something from a cheesy movie.""
Emily let out a broken laugh.
"I remember.""
Claire's eyes glistened.
"Well, sweetheart, I want you to remember it now. Even when people make you feel small, never let them convince you that you don't deserve a place in the world.""
The recording paused.
Then Claire looked toward someone off-camera.
"Michael, there is something else.""
Her expression became serious.
"I discovered a payment that I couldn't explain. It was made from an account connected to our household finances. The recipient was a company called Vantage Property Holdings.""
Michael sat upright.
Emily stared at the screen.
The same company.
Claire continued.
"The payment was small at first. Then another appeared. I asked the bank for an explanation, but the transaction details were incomplete.""
Michael opened the laptop's banking records.
He searched the company's name.
The first payment had been made seven years earlier.
The second came two months later.
Then there were no further transactions for years.
Until the recent withdrawals.
Emily looked at him.
"Mom knew about Vantage before Vanessa married you?""
Michael shook his head slowly.
"I never heard of that company until tonight.""
Claire continued.
"If you're watching this, I want you to speak with Margaret before making any decisions. She has the original records.""
The screen went black.
For a long moment, neither Michael nor Emily spoke.
Then Emily whispered.
"She was trying to protect us.""
Michael closed the laptop halfway.
"Yes.""
He looked at the metal container.
"She was trying to protect you.""
Emily wiped her cheeks.
"Why didn't you tell me about the trust?""
"I thought it was just part of the estate arrangements. Your mother handled most of the legal details.""
"Then why didn't you remember the restrictions?""
Michael stared at the table.
"Because I trusted the wrong person.""
The kitchen door opened.
Vanessa walked in.
She was no longer holding her wineglass.
Her expression was calm, but her eyes were fixed on the laptop.
"What are you watching?""
Michael closed the screen.
"Something Claire left for us.""
Vanessa stopped.
"Claire?""
"Yes.""
She looked at Emily.
"Where did you get that?""
Emily held up the metal container.
"From the garden.""
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"You dug up the garden?""
Michael stood.
"Don't change the subject.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I don't know what you think you found, but I hope you're not planning to turn a family disagreement into some ridiculous conspiracy.""
Michael looked at her.
"Claire mentioned Vantage Property Holdings.""
Vanessa's face went still.
Only for a second.
Then she laughed.
"That company?""
"You know it?""
"Of course. I told you I had business interests.""
"Claire found payments to that company seven years ago.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Perhaps she misunderstood.""
"She also found an attempt to change the trust.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Michael, your wife was sick.""
Emily stepped forward.
"Don't.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"Don't what?""
"Don't use Mom's illness to dismiss everything she discovered.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You think a video proves anything?""
Michael placed the scanned trust modification on the counter.
"Then explain this.""
Vanessa examined the document.
Her expression changed.
She picked it up and looked at the signature.
"Where did you get this?""
"Claire kept it.""
Vanessa put the paper down.
"That document was never approved.""
"I know. Margaret rejected it.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Then what's the problem?""
"The problem is that someone tried to make me believe I had approved it.""
Michael moved closer.
"Was that you?""
Vanessa looked at him for several seconds.
Then she said quietly, "You have no idea what I was dealing with.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"Tell me.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Tell me.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"You were working all the time. Claire was sick. Emily needed everything. I was the only person keeping this house together!""
Emily stared at her.
"Nobody forced you to forge anything.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"You have no idea what I sacrificed.""
"Then explain the money.""
Vanessa looked at Michael.
"I used it to build something for us.""
"With my signature?""
"I was going to make it right.""
Michael stared at her.
"How?""
She didn't answer.
He reached for his phone.
"I'm calling Margaret.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped toward him.
"Don't.""
"Move.""
"Michael, listen to me.""
"I've listened to you for years.""
Her expression broke.
For the first time, her voice sounded genuinely desperate.
"If you call that lawyer, you could lose everything.""
Michael looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa swallowed.
Then she said something neither of them expected.
"The money isn't just gone.""
Michael frowned.
"What?""
Vanessa glanced toward the front window.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Vantage Property Holdings borrowed money from someone else. Someone who expects to be paid back.""
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at Michael.
"Someone who already has a claim against this property.""
Michael shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I tried to stop it.""
Emily stared at her.
"Stop what?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Then the doorbell rang.
Three sharp chimes.
Michael walked toward the front door.
He opened it.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stood on the porch, holding a leather briefcase.
"Mr. Turner?""
"Yes?""
The man produced a business card.
"Daniel Price. I'm representing the lender associated with Vantage Property Holdings.""
Michael's face hardened.
"What lender?""
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
"I'm here to discuss the outstanding secured debt.""
Michael took the envelope.
He opened it.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"What have you done?""
Daniel cleared his throat.
"Mr. Turner, I'm afraid the matter is already beyond an informal discussion.""
Emily stepped closer.
"What matter?""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Your father's property has been listed as collateral on a loan exceeding two hundred thousand dollars.""
Michael stared at him.
"That property was never pledged as collateral.""
Daniel removed another sheet.
"According to the documents we received, the authorization was signed by you.""
Michael examined the page.
His signature was there.
But it wasn't his.
Again.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Daniel continued.
"Unfortunately, the loan is now in default. Unless the matter is resolved, our client intends to pursue legal remedies.""
Michael's voice was barely audible.
"How long do I have?""
Daniel checked the paperwork.
"Fourteen days.""
Emily felt the floor shift beneath her.
Fourteen days.
Her father looked toward the kitchen.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"Did you put our home at risk?""
Vanessa began crying.
But this time, Michael didn't move to comfort her.
He simply stood there, holding the papers.
And Daniel Price added one final sentence.
May you like
"There's another complication, Mr. Turner. The lender believes your daughter was involved in the original authorization.""
Emily went cold.
