Chapter 2: The Papers Beneath the Table
I didn't sleep that night.
After leaving the diner, I took Lily to a hotel near Daniel's office. I ordered room service, checked the door locks twice, and sat beside her bed until she finally fell asleep.
She kept one hand wrapped around the sleeve of my shirt.
Every time I tried to move, her fingers tightened.
"Daddy?""
"I'm here.""
"Are you going away again tomorrow?""
"No, sweetheart.""
"Promise?""
I brushed the hair away from her forehead.
"I promise.""
She closed her eyes.
A few minutes later, she sat up again.
"Can I tell you something without Grandma finding out?""
My chest tightened.
"Of course.""
"She said I was supposed to call her Mommy.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Sometimes she makes me say it when Brandon's friends come over. She says it's embarrassing when I call her Grandma because she's the one raising me.""
"Did you want to call her Mommy?""
Lily shook her head.
"Mommy is Mommy.""
She said it so simply that I had to look away.
"You're right," I whispered.
"Nobody can replace your mother.""
Lily lay down again.
"Grandma says Mommy isn't coming back because I wasn't good enough.""
I felt a sharp pain behind my ribs.
I leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Your mother loved you more than anything in this world. Nothing you did could ever change that.""
Lily nodded.
But she didn't look convinced.
I stayed until her breathing became steady.
Then I walked into the adjoining room and called Daniel again.
"Tell me everything.""
Daniel Brooks had been Sarah's attorney for almost fifteen years. He had handled the trust, the estate planning, and the medical paperwork during her illness.
His voice sounded exhausted.
"The document submitted three days ago is called a temporary custodial authorization. It claims you've agreed to let Vanessa manage Lily's financial interests until she's eighteen.""
"That isn't true.""
"I know.""
"Then why would anyone accept it?""
"Because it includes a notarized signature, a copy of your driver's license, and a supporting affidavit stating you were unavailable due to business travel.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Can you prove it's fake?""
"Not immediately. But there's a problem with the document.""
"What problem?""
"Sarah's trust explicitly prohibits a transfer of management authority to anyone who isn't an approved fiduciary. Vanessa isn't listed.""
"Then how did she submit it?""
"She also included a separate petition claiming you're emotionally unstable following Sarah's death and frequently absent from your daughter's life.""
I stared at the wall.
"She's trying to make me look like an unfit father?""
"That's what it appears to be.""
I stood and walked to the window.
The city lights reflected in the glass.
"Daniel, she has been living in my house. I've paid her to help care for Lily. She has access to everything.""
"Michael, I need you to understand something. This isn't just about the money anymore.""
"What do you mean?""
"Sarah's trust contains shares in Carter Development Holdings. If Lily's assets are transferred, the person controlling those shares could influence several major decisions.""
I closed my eyes.
My late wife's inheritance was worth approximately $18 million.
But the shares carried something far more valuable than money.
Voting power.
Sarah had inherited them from her grandfather. Before she died, she transferred them into a protected trust for Lily.
The arrangement had been designed to ensure our daughter would never be financially dependent on anyone.
"How much control would Vanessa have if the petition succeeded?""
"Enough to create serious problems. She couldn't legally own Lily's shares, but she could attempt to exercise certain temporary administrative powers. And if the court accepted the allegations about your parenting, she might be able to seek guardianship.""
I gripped the phone.
"She's not getting my daughter.""
"Then we need evidence. Every document, every communication, every person who witnessed her behavior.""
I glanced toward the bedroom.
"There's a letter Sarah left for me. Vanessa has hidden it.""
Daniel went quiet.
"Did Lily tell you that?""
"Yes.""
"Then we need to find it.""
I looked at the clock.
It was nearly midnight.
"Tomorrow.""
"Michael, don't confront Vanessa alone.""
"I'll call the police if I have to.""
"First, protect Lily. I'll prepare the emergency filings tonight.""
After we ended the call, I sat at the desk and opened my laptop.
I checked my bank transfers.
For six months, I'd been sending Vanessa $4,000 every month.
There were also separate payments for Lily's school expenses, medical bills, clothes, and extracurricular activities.
The money was there.
But something was wrong.
I opened the household account statement.
Nearly every grocery purchase had been made at a discount store, despite the generous monthly budget.
Meanwhile, there were recurring payments to a luxury clothing boutique, a jewelry store, and a private fitness club.
I downloaded everything.
Then I noticed a recurring transfer of $2,500 to an account I didn't recognize.
The recipient's name was Brandon Carter.
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa had been transferring household money directly into her son's personal account.
And my daughter had been eating leftovers.
At seven the next morning, Daniel arrived at the hotel carrying a leather briefcase.
He looked at Lily first.
"Good morning, young lady.""
Lily hid behind my arm.
Daniel crouched slightly.
"I'm Daniel. I was a friend of your mommy's.""
Her eyes widened.
"Did you know her?""
"I did. She talked about you all the time.""
Lily studied him.
"Did she say I was good?""
Daniel's expression softened.
"She said you were the bravest little girl she'd ever met.""
Lily looked down at her shoes.
Daniel stood and turned to me.
"We need to go through the house.""
I nodded.
"I want every document Vanessa has.""
"Then we should bring someone from the police department if we're concerned about evidence being destroyed.""
Before we could leave, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered and put it on speaker.
"Where is Lily?"" she demanded.
"She's safe.""
"Michael, you cannot just take her away!""
"She's my daughter.""
"You didn't even tell me where you were going!""
"Why would I?""
Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.
"Because I'm the person who has been raising her while you've been playing businessman.""
Daniel wrote something on his notepad.
I kept my voice calm.
"Vanessa, I want to know what you made Lily sign.""
Silence.
Then she said, "She's a confused child. You shouldn't believe everything she tells you.""
"Did you ask her to practice my signature?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Did you take Sarah's letter?""
Her breathing changed.
Only slightly.
But I heard it.
"What letter?""
"The letter Sarah left for me.""
Vanessa's voice became colder.
"Michael, your wife was very sick. She wrote all sorts of emotional things near the end. You need to stop treating her last wishes like some kind of sacred command.""
Daniel looked up sharply.
I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.
"Where is the letter?""
"I have no idea.""
"Then you won't mind if we search the house.""
"Absolutely not!""
"Why?""
"Because I live there!""
I glanced at Daniel.
He mouthed two words.
Keep talking.
"Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Listen carefully, Michael. You're making a terrible mistake. If you continue this, I'll have to explain to the court what kind of father you've become.""
"Go ahead.""
"You think people will believe you? You abandoned your daughter for months. I have school records.
I have witnesses. I have photographs of her crying because you weren't there.""
I said nothing.
She continued.
"And when the court sees that you've been using your business to avoid your responsibilities, perhaps they'll understand why Lily needs someone stable.""
I looked at Daniel.
He had stopped writing.
"Is that a threat?""
"It's a warning.""
The call ended.
Daniel exhaled.
"She's more confident than someone with nothing to hide should be.""
"Then let's find out why.""
We arrived at the house just after nine.
Vanessa's car was in the driveway.
I used my key.
The front door opened.
"Michael?""
She appeared at the top of the stairs wearing a white robe, holding a cup of coffee.
Her eyes moved to Daniel.
"What is he doing here?""
"He's my attorney.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Of course. You brought a lawyer into your own home.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mrs. Carter, we're here to retrieve personal documents belonging to Michael and his daughter. We also want to inspect the household records.""
"You have no authority to search my private belongings.""
"We aren't searching your private belongings without permission," Daniel replied.
"But anything belonging to Lily or Michael needs to be returned.""
Vanessa walked downstairs.
"You've been feeding him lies about me, haven't you?""
I looked at her.
"Where's Lily's room?""
"Upstairs.""
"Then I'm going to get her things.""
"She doesn't need to come back here.""
I stopped.
"Why?""
Vanessa lifted her coffee cup.
"Because this house has been peaceful without all the drama.""
I took one step closer.
"You've been feeding my daughter garbage.""
Her expression hardened.
"She refused to eat the meals I prepared.""
"She was eating leftovers from a takeout container.""
"Those were perfectly good leftovers!""
"While Brandon had steak.""
"Brandon appreciates what I do for him.""
I stared at her.
There it was.
Not even an attempt to hide the favoritism.
Daniel quietly took out his phone and began recording.
Vanessa noticed.
"Put that away!""
"Why?"" I asked.
"Don't you want people to hear what you're saying?""
She placed her coffee on the hallway table.
"You are going to regret humiliating me.""
I walked past her.
Upstairs, Lily's bedroom door was slightly open.
I pushed it gently.
The room was almost empty.
Her pink blanket was gone. The stuffed rabbit Sarah had bought her was missing. Even the framed photograph of Lily and her mother had disappeared from the bedside table.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Where are her things?""
"I packed some of them away.""
"Where?""
"In storage.""
"Why?""
"Because she doesn't need to be reminded of Sarah every minute.""
I looked at the empty wall.
"Put them back.""
She crossed her arms.
"No.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Michael, let's focus on the documents.""
I took a breath.
He was right.
We checked the filing cabinet in the downstairs office. Most of the folders contained household bills and school paperwork.
But the locked drawer was empty.
Vanessa stood behind us.
"You're wasting your time.""
I opened another cabinet.
Nothing.
Then I remembered Lily's description.
The room where she keeps the papers.
The little office behind the kitchen.
I walked toward the kitchen.
There was a narrow door beside the pantry that I'd never paid much attention to. Vanessa usually kept it locked, saying it contained cleaning supplies and old household equipment.
Today, the door was slightly open.
Inside was a cramped storage room with shelves along both walls.
I turned on the light.
Old magazines. Boxes. Cleaning products.
Then I saw something beneath a folding table.
A cardboard box.
I pulled it out.
It was heavier than I expected.
The top was taped shut.
Daniel handed me a small utility knife.
I cut through the tape.
Inside were dozens of papers.
School worksheets.
Bank statements.
Photocopies of my driver's license.
And several sheets covered in handwriting.
I picked one up.
At the top, in uneven blue pencil, were the words:
*PRACTICE DADDY'S SIGNATURE.*
Below them were at least twenty attempts at my name.
Some were childish scribbles.
Others were disturbingly close.
My stomach turned.
I pulled out another page.
It was a letter written in a child's handwriting.
I, Lily Carter, agree that Grandma Vanessa can take care of my money because Daddy is too busy.
The next sheet contained a signature.
Lily Carter.
But underneath it was another name.
Michael Carter.
My own signature.
I looked closer.
It was almost perfect.
Almost.
Then I noticed the date.
The document had supposedly been signed six weeks earlier.
I hadn't been in the country that week.
"Daniel.""
He took the paper.
His expression changed immediately.
"This is serious.""
I reached deeper into the box.
A thick envelope appeared beneath the worksheets.
It had Sarah's handwriting on the front.
*For Michael. Only Michael.*
My hands began shaking.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter, several pages long.
The first line made my knees feel weak.
Michael, if you're reading this, then Vanessa has finally done what I was afraid she would do.
I read the next sentence.
And there's something you need to know about why I never trusted her around our daughter.
Behind me, Vanessa suddenly screamed.
"PUT THAT LETTER DOWN!""
I turned.
May you like
She was standing in the doorway.
And for the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely terrified.
