Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Signed My Father's Name

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stood in the garage holding a photograph that should never have existed.

My father had been dead for two years. Yet the picture showed him signing a document beside a representative of Northbridge Capital Partners, with Vanessa standing close enough to watch every movement of his hand.

The date printed beneath the photograph was six weeks after his funeral.

"Daniel," I said quietly, "tell me I'm missing something.""

My attorney took the photograph and examined it again.

"Where did you get this?"" he asked Vanessa.

She crossed her arms.

"Does it matter?""

"Yes. Very much.""

"It came from someone who wanted to protect my son.""

"Who?""

Vanessa smiled without humor.

"You're going to have to figure that out yourself.""

I stepped toward her.

"You're standing in my garage, holding evidence of a forged legal document involving my dead father and my daughter's inheritance. I suggest you stop playing games.""

Her expression hardened.

"You've always thought you were better than everyone, Michael. Your father gave you everything. The company.

The house. The respect. Even after he married me, you acted as though I was some temporary guest.""

"This has nothing to do with my father's marriage.""

"Everything has to do with it!""

She pointed at the photograph.

"Your father promised Brandon a future. He told me he wanted both families protected. Then he died, and suddenly everything belonged to you and Sarah's little princess.""

I looked at Brandon.

The boy was standing near the garage entrance, his eyes red.

"Did your mother ever show you this photograph?""

He nodded.

"She said Grandpa had made sure I would never be poor.""

"Did she say anything about Lily?""

Brandon looked down.

"She said Lily already had too much.""

Vanessa grabbed his shoulder.

"Go inside.""

"No.""

The answer surprised all of us.

Brandon pulled away.

"You told me she was going to California because she was bad. You said she wouldn't need the money anymore.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"Brandon, you're too young to understand.""

"I'm not stupid!""

His voice cracked.

"You told me to take her lunch away when she complained. You said she needed to learn that everything wasn't hers.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"Did you take food from your sister?""

Brandon began crying.

"Sometimes.""

"Why?""

"Mom said it was a punishment.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

An eight-year-old girl had been punished with hunger while a twelve-year-old boy had been taught to see her suffering as something normal.

I opened my eyes.

"Brandon, listen carefully. Whatever your mother told you, none of that was Lily's fault.""

He wiped his nose with his sleeve.

"Is she going to hate me?""

I didn't have an easy answer.

"That's something you and Lily will have to work through. But nobody is going to make her go hungry again.""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"You're manipulating him!""

"No," Daniel said.

"We're documenting what he just told us.""

Vanessa looked at Daniel with open fury.

"You've been waiting for this, haven't you?""

Daniel ignored her and photographed the folder.

Then he made a call.

"Detective Harris? This is Daniel Brooks. I need to report suspected forgery, attempted fraudulent transfer of trust assets, and possible exploitation of a minor.

Yes. We have physical documents and a witness.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"You cannot involve the police.""

Daniel covered the phone.

"Why not?""

She looked toward the toolbox.

Then toward the folder in my hand.

For the first time, I understood that she wasn't afraid of being caught.

She was afraid of what we might find next.

Detective Laura Harris arrived forty minutes later.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and the kind of expression that suggested she had heard every excuse imaginable.

She listened without interrupting while Daniel explained the forged documents.

Then she examined the photograph.

"Do you have the original?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's all I have.""

"Who provided it?""

"I don't remember.""

Detective Harris looked at her.

"You don't remember who gave you a photograph of a dead man signing a will?""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"I receive a lot of correspondence.""

"Then perhaps you'll remember when we examine your phone records.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"This is your fault, Michael.""

I didn't respond.

Detective Harris turned toward Brandon.

"Can I ask you a few questions?""

Vanessa immediately objected.

"He's a child. He doesn't need to be involved.""

"That's exactly why I'm going to make sure he's comfortable before asking anything.""

Brandon looked at me.

I crouched beside him.

"You don't have to be afraid, okay?""

He nodded.

Detective Harris asked him whether he knew where the other papers were.

Brandon pointed toward the toolbox.

"That's not all of them.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Brandon.""

He continued.

"There's a black bag in Mom's bedroom. She told me never to touch it.""

Detective Harris wrote something down.

"What's inside?""

"I don't know. But I saw papers with Lily's picture on them.""

Daniel and I exchanged a glance.

"Detective," I said, "we need to secure those documents.""

"We'll handle that through the proper process.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"You think you're going to find something that proves I did anything wrong? Everything I did was for this family.""

Detective Harris looked at her.

"Then you shouldn't have any reason to worry.""

Two hours later, we were sitting in Daniel's office.

The black bag had been secured for examination, and Detective Harris had arranged for Lily to be interviewed by a trained child specialist.

I had insisted that nobody question her without a professional present.

She had already endured enough.

Daniel spread several documents across his desk.

"There's something we need to discuss about the photograph.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"The man standing beside your father.""

I looked at the image again.

His face was familiar.

A tall man in his late fifties, with silver hair and a narrow face.

I recognized him immediately.

"Richard Hale.""

Daniel nodded.

"Northbridge's senior acquisitions director.""

"He came to our headquarters twice last year.""

"More than twice," Daniel corrected.

"Sarah documented at least seven meetings.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't I know that?""

"Because she requested that I keep certain correspondence separate from the company records.""

I looked down.

"She was investigating him.""

"Yes.""

Daniel opened a folder from his briefcase.

Inside were copies of emails between Sarah and Richard.

One message was dated four months before Sarah died.

Mr. Hale,

I have reviewed the proposed transaction. I will not approve any arrangement that gives Northbridge control over my daughter's voting rights.

Another message followed two days later.

Please stop contacting my family members directly. Any further communication must go through legal counsel.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"She knew.""

"She suspected something.""

Daniel placed another page in front of me.

It was an email from an unknown account.

You cannot protect the shares forever. The child will eventually need a representative.

I looked up.

"Who sent this?""

"The account was traced to a temporary address associated with Northbridge's legal department.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why would they want an eight-year-old's shares?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Because those shares give Lily a controlling interest in a portion of Carter Development Holdings. Northbridge has been trying to acquire that voting block for years.""

"How much would it be worth?""

"At today's valuation, approximately $26 million.""

I leaned back.

Twenty-six million dollars.

Suddenly the grocery money, the forged signatures, and the missing letter made a terrible kind of sense.

Vanessa hadn't simply been mistreating Lily.

She had been trying to gain control of something worth more than most people would earn in several lifetimes.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Michael Carter?""

"Who is this?""

A man's voice replied.

"Richard Hale.""

My entire body stiffened.

"How did you get this number?""

"I have been trying to reach you for some time.""

"What do you want?""

"I understand there has been a misunderstanding involving Mrs. Carter.""

I glanced at Daniel.

He immediately gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

"A misunderstanding?""

"Vanessa is an emotional woman. She has made some decisions without understanding the legal implications.""

"Like forging my signature?""

There was a brief pause.

"Those matters are being handled by counsel.""

"Your company is involved in my daughter's trust.""

"Our company has legitimate business interests.""

"My daughter is eight.""

"Which is why an experienced representative would be beneficial.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Are you offering to help my daughter or steal her inheritance?""

His voice became colder.

"Mr. Carter, I would advise you not to make accusations you cannot support.""

I almost laughed.

"Then let me ask you something. Why is your name on a photograph of my dead father signing a document six weeks after his funeral?""

Silence.

For the first time, Richard Hale seemed caught off guard.

Then he said, "I think you should speak with your stepmother.""

"I am speaking with you.""

"Be careful, Michael. Your father left behind certain arrangements you may not be aware of.""

"Send them to my attorney.""

"I suspect you'll find that the truth is more complicated than you imagine.""

The call ended.

Daniel immediately began typing.

"What did he mean by your father's arrangements?""

I stared at the phone.

"I don't know.""

Then an email appeared.

No subject line.

No message.

Just one attachment.

A scanned document titled:

*THE CARTER FAMILY PRIVATE AGREEMENT — ORIGINAL EXECUTION COPY.*

At the bottom of the first page was my father's signature.

And beside it was a name I hadn't seen in years.

Sarah Carter.

My wife.

I opened the attachment.

The agreement appeared to establish a private arrangement between my father, Sarah, and Northbridge Capital.

But the signature dates were strange.

My father's signature was dated before his death.

Sarah's signature was dated three weeks afterward.

I read it again.

Then I read the final paragraph.

It stated that Sarah had agreed to transfer a portion of Lily's future voting rights to a third-party administrator if certain conditions were met.

"Daniel?""

He was already reading over my shoulder.

"That signature looks suspicious.""

"Could Sarah have agreed to this?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he opened another document.

"Look at the dates.""

I compared the two pages.

The agreement claimed Sarah had signed it on September 14.

But she had been hospitalized and unconscious on September 14.

I knew because I had spent that entire day sitting beside her hospital bed.

I remembered holding her hand.

I remembered the machines.

I remembered the nurse asking me to step outside while they adjusted her medication.

Sarah hadn't signed anything.

"Someone forged her signature, too.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And they needed Vanessa to make the remaining transfer possible.""

I stared at the screen.

The door to Daniel's office opened.

His assistant entered carrying a sealed envelope.

"Mr. Brooks? This arrived by courier. It says it's urgent.""

Daniel took it.

The envelope had no return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Sarah sitting in a hospital bed, looking directly into the camera.

On the back, someone had written six words.

*ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT SHE DISCOVERED FIRST.*

I looked at the photograph.

Then at Daniel.

May you like

Because Sarah had been dead for six months.

And whoever sent that picture knew exactly what she had been investigating.
