Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Twice
By the time I reached Renee’s house, my hands were shaking.
Not from anger.
From fear.
Because every answer we found created another question.
Every truth opened another door.
And behind every door was another secret.
Renee was sitting at the kitchen table.
There was a folder in front of her.
She looked exhausted.
“Aaliyah is upstairs,” she said.
I stopped.
“She knows?””
“She knows I found it.””
I walked closer.
“What is it?””
She pushed the folder toward me.
I opened it.
Inside was another DNA test.
Older.
Different.
The names were the same.
Derek.
Aaliyah.
But the result was different.
I read it.
Then read it again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Probability of paternity: 99.98%*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Renee started crying.
“The first test.””
I stared.
“The first?””
She nodded.
“The one Derek took before he left.””
My voice lowered.
“Then the other one?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I felt cold.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Renee, someone changed a DNA test.””
“I know.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Then:
“I think Ethan did.””
I froze.
“What?””
She covered her face.
“I don’t know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Start from the beginning.””
She wiped her eyes.
“After Derek left, Ethan contacted me.””
“Why?””
“To ask about Aaliyah.””
“And?””
“I told him Derek was her father.””
I frowned.
“But this test says he was.””
“Yes.””
“So why hide it?””
Her face twisted.
“Because Ethan wasn’t asking for a DNA test.””
“What was he asking for?””
She whispered:
“He was asking to meet his daughter.””
I looked at the papers.
“And you said no.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
Fear.
The excuse that had destroyed everything.
But then she said something that made me open them.
“Because Ethan wasn’t the only person who wanted access to Aaliyah.””
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
“Someone else was contacting him.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I never saw their face.””
I stared.
“Renee.””
She looked terrified.
“They sent messages.””
“What messages?””
She reached for her phone.
Then handed it to me.
A conversation.
Years old.
Unknown number.
One message stood out.
*If you care about Aaliyah, stay away. You don’t know what you’re protecting her from.*
I looked at Renee.
“You got these?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
She whispered:
“Ethan.””
I sat down.
Because now there was another person.
Another shadow.
Someone who had been controlling the situation from the beginning.
Aaliyah walked downstairs.
“Marcus?””
I looked at her.
She saw the papers.
Her face changed.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
She walked closer.
“Mom?””
Renee looked at her daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
Aaliyah stared.
“For what now?””
The pain in her voice was unbearable.
Renee cried.
“For not knowing who was telling the truth.””
Aaliyah looked at me.
“Do you know?””
I looked at the DNA tests.
The letters.
The messages.
“No.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I don’t.””
She sat down.
“Then what do we do?””
Before I could answer, someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Renee looked toward the door.
“I wasn’t expecting anyone.””
The knocking came again.
Aaliyah stood.
“I’ll get it.””
“No,” I said immediately.
Something about the moment felt wrong.
I moved toward the door.
I opened it.
And the man standing outside made every thought disappear.
Because I knew him.
Not personally.
But I knew his face.
I had seen him before.
In old photographs.
Standing beside Renee.
Before Derek.
Before me.
His eyes moved past me.
Straight to Aaliyah.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry it took me this long.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man swallowed.
“My name is Ethan.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because Ethan was already inside the house.
The man on the phone.
The man from the letters.
The man Aaliyah thought she had finally found.
But there was one problem.
He looked nothing like the pictures.
And he was holding a file.
A file with my name on it.
“Marcus,” Ethan said quietly.
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know my name?””
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“Because I’ve been trying to find you too.””
I stared.
“Why?””
He opened the file.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Ten years younger.
Standing outside a hospital.
Holding a baby.
My baby.
Except I had never seen the picture before.
Then Ethan said the words that changed everything.
“You weren’t just the man who raised Aaliyah.””
He looked at Renee.
May you like
Then back at me.
“You’re the reason she was taken from me.””
