Chapter 13: The Signature I Never Made
I stared at the document on my phone until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Because maybe my eyes had betrayed me.
Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me.
Maybe after three days of secrets, lies, and impossible revelations, my brain had simply decided to create one more nightmare.
But the document was still there.
My name.
My information.
A signature that looked like mine.
And a date from ten years ago.
The day I supposedly agreed to become Aaliyah’s legal guardian.
I walked back inside.
Nobody spoke when they saw my face.
Aaliyah stood first.
“Marcus…”
I held up my phone.
“Explain this.””
Renee looked at the screen.
And immediately started crying.
Arthur didn’t move.
That was when I knew.
He already knew.
“You knew,” I said.
Arthur looked at me calmly.
“Yes.””
The word was almost peaceful.
Like he was admitting he had borrowed my car.
Not forged my identity.
Not changed my entire life.
I stepped closer.
“What is this?””
“A legal agreement.””
“No.””
I pointed at the document.
“What is this?””
Arthur sighed.
“You became Aaliyah’s guardian.””
“I never signed this.””
“You did.””
My hands curled into fists.
“No, I didn’t.””
Aaliyah looked at Arthur.
“Grandpa.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“You forged his signature?””
The room went silent.
Arthur didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because silence was an answer too.
Renee covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know.””
I turned toward her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
“I swear.””
“How convenient.””
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I need everyone to stop saying my name like that fixes anything.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Arthur.
“Why?””
He remained calm.
“Because Aaliyah needed stability.””
I laughed.
The sound was empty.
“So you committed fraud because you wanted stability?””
“I protected her.””
“You keep saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“But every person in this room keeps using protection as an excuse for control.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“No.””
I looked around.
“I understand perfectly.””
My eyes landed on Aaliyah.
“You all decided what was best for her.””
Then Renee.
“You decided what was best for her.””
Then Arthur.
“And you decided what was best for everyone.””
I looked back at the document.
“But nobody asked what was best for me.””
Aaliyah walked closer.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
She looked different.
Not because she had changed.
Because she finally saw what I had been carrying.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words nearly broke me.
Because they were the words I had waited for.
But they were also the words that came too late.
“I know you are.””
She wiped her tears.
“I didn’t know.””
“I believe you.””
That surprised her.
“But that doesn’t make it disappear.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I noticed something.
Aaliyah wasn’t looking at Arthur with confusion anymore.
She was looking at him with disappointment.
The kind that comes when someone you trusted becomes someone you don’t recognize.
“Grandpa,” she said quietly.
Arthur looked at her.
“You did all this?””
“I did what was necessary.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You did what you wanted.””
Arthur’s face changed.
“Aaliyah.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You made my entire life into a story you controlled.””
“That’s not true.””
“You chose Derek.””
“You needed a father.””
“You chose Marcus.””
“You needed someone stable.””
“You chose Ethan.””
“You needed protection from instability.””
She shook her head.
“But nobody chose me.””
That sentence silenced everyone.
Because it was the truth.
Arthur looked at her.
“I did what I thought was right.””
Aaliyah laughed through her tears.
“That’s what everyone says.””
She looked at me.
“He said it.””
Then Renee.
“You said it.””
Then herself.
“I probably said it too.””
Nobody moved.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
Ethan reached into his bag.
He pulled out another envelope.
“I found this years ago.””
Arthur’s expression changed.
“What is that?””
Ethan looked at him.
“You know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What is it?””
Ethan handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
Different handwriting.
Older.
The first line made my blood run cold.
*To Marcus Hale,*
I looked up.
“My name.””
Ethan nodded.
“Read it.””
I unfolded the paper.
The letter was from my sister.
The one who worked at the hospital.
The one I barely remembered.
*Marcus, if you are reading this, then the truth finally came out.*
I stopped.
My breathing changed.
*I’m sorry I never told you. I thought I was protecting you.*
The words felt familiar.
Too familiar.
I kept reading.
*When Renee came to me, she wasn’t looking for a husband. She was looking for someone who could save her daughter.*
My eyes moved faster.
*She told me Derek had left. She told me Ethan was gone. She told me she needed someone kind.*
I swallowed.
*I introduced you because I knew your heart.*
I looked at Renee.
She was crying.
*But I made a mistake. I thought love would be enough. I didn’t realize people would turn your kindness into a cage.*
My hands trembled.
Then came the final paragraph.
*Marcus, you were never chosen because you were convenient. You were chosen because you were good. But goodness without the truth is not love. It is a burden.*
I stopped reading.
The room was silent.
Then Aaliyah whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
And for the first time in days…
I believed her.
But before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Marcus?””
I didn’t recognize it.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Claire.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that name.
My sister.
The woman who supposedly wrote the letter.
The woman who had been dead for eight years.
“I know you have questions,” the voice said.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who are you?””
May you like
The woman whispered:
“I’m the person who has been trying to fix the mistake your sister made.””
