Amused

Chapter 3: The Lie Behind the Promise

I read the message twelve times.

Not because I didn’t understand it.

Because I did.

Someone wanted me to believe there was a part of my own life I didn’t know.

And somehow, that scared me more than losing Aaliyah.

Because losing her hurt.

But discovering I had built my entire relationship with her on a lie?

That was something else.

I called Renee immediately.

She didn’t answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

By the third attempt, my hands were shaking.

Finally, she picked up.

“Marcus?””

“Where are you?””

Silence.

“Renee.””

“I’m at work.””

“Then leave.””

“What?””

“I need you to leave and tell me the truth.””

Her breathing changed.

“What happened?””

“Someone texted me.””

Another silence.

A terrible one.

“What did they say?””

I closed my eyes.

“You already know.””

She didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

“Come home,” I said.

An hour later, Renee sat across from me again.

But this time, she looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy box for too long.

“What did you hide from me?”” I asked.

She looked at her hands.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Losing you.””

The answer should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

“Renee, I lost everything anyway.””

She started crying.

“When Derek left, Aaliyah was eight.””

“I know.””

“She was devastated.””

“I know.””

“She asked every night if he was coming back.””

I nodded.

“I remember.””

Renee swallowed.

“But there was something you don’t know.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The night he left… he didn’t just walk away.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“He came to the house.””

I froze.

“He came?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before you met me.””

I stared at her.

None of it made sense.

“I don’t understand.””

Renee took a deep breath.

“You met Aaliyah after Derek had already left.””

“Yes.””

“But you never knew why.””

I waited.

“He left because he found out something.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Renee’s voice became barely a whisper.

“He found out he might not be Aaliyah’s biological father.””

The room stopped moving.

I stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

She covered her mouth.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

“Then tell me the right way.””

Tears ran down her face.

“When I was pregnant, Derek and I were having problems.””

I stood.

“No.””

“Marcus…”

“No.””

Because suddenly every memory felt different.

Every birthday.

Every hug.

Every promise.

I had always believed I was the man who stepped in after another man left.

But maybe the truth was more complicated.

“Did Aaliyah know?””

Renee shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Derek know?””

“Yes.””

My voice lowered.

“Then why did he come back?””

Renee looked terrified.

“Because he found the test results.””

“What test results?””

She reached into her purse.

Her hands trembled as she pulled out an old envelope.

A document.

Yellowed at the edges.

Ten years hidden.

Ten years waiting.

She placed it on the table.

“I never showed this to you.””

I looked at the paper.

“What is it?””

Renee whispered:

“The DNA test Derek took before he left.””

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the result wasn’t what I expected.

It wasn’t a simple betrayal.

It wasn’t a story about a man who abandoned his child.

It was something much worse.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

Not Derek.

Not me.

Someone else.

And underneath it was the sentence that changed everything:

*The alleged father is excluded.*

My hands went cold.

Because suddenly I understood.

May you like

Derek wasn’t the only person who had been lied to.

And neither was I.
