Amused

Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper

I stared at the DNA test until the words stopped looking like words.

*The alleged father is excluded.*

Five simple words.

Five words that rearranged ten years of my life.

I looked at Renee.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

She wiped her face.

“Marcus…”

“Who is it?””

The second time, my voice was louder.

Not angry.

Not yet.

Just desperate.

Because there was only one question burning through my mind.

If Derek wasn’t Aaliyah’s father…

Then who was?

Renee reached for the paper.

I pulled it back.

“No.””

She stopped.

“I need to see it.””

“You need to understand first.””

“Understand what?””

She looked at me like she was trying to find the least painful way to destroy my world.

“There are things that happened before you came into our lives.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently there are things that happened during my entire marriage too.””

“That’s not fair.””

I looked at her.

“Fair?””

The word came out quietly.

“Renee, I spent ten years believing I was the only person who stayed. Then today I find out everyone around me was carrying secrets.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to protect everyone except me.””

The silence that followed was worse than an argument.

Because neither of us could deny it.

Finally, Renee whispered, “His name was Ethan.””

The name meant nothing.

At first.

Then something clicked.

A memory.

A small one.

A conversation from years ago.

Aaliyah, sitting at the kitchen table when she was fourteen, working on a history project.

She had asked me a strange question.

“Marcus?””

“Yeah?””

“Do you think people can have more than one dad?””

I had looked up from my laptop.

“What kind of question is that?””

She shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

I smiled.

“Depends what you mean.””

She played with her pencil.

“Like… someone who makes you and someone who raises you.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about Derek.

I told her something I believed with my whole heart.

“Blood doesn’t make someone a parent.””

She had looked at me for a long time.

Then nodded.

I thought I was teaching her something.

Now I wondered if she was trying to tell me something.

“Ethan,” I repeated.

Renee nodded.

“He was someone I knew before Derek.””

“Someone you dated?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did Derek know?””

“He found out.””

“When?””

“After Aaliyah was born.””

I looked at the paper again.

“And he stayed?””

“For a while.””

“Then why leave?””

Renee’s face changed.

Because this was the part she had been avoiding.

“Because he couldn’t handle it.””

I almost smiled.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The man who abandoned her gets to come back as her hero.””

“Marcus…”

“And the man who stayed gets treated like he was temporary.””

Her eyes closed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, our neighborhood looked exactly the same.

Children riding bikes.

Neighbors walking dogs.

Cars passing by.

A normal evening.

Except my entire past had cracked open.

“Does Aaliyah know about Ethan?””

“No.””

“Does Derek know?””

“Yes.””

I turned around.

“Then why did he come back?””

Renee hesitated.

That hesitation was becoming something I hated.

“Because he wanted answers.””

“Answers?””

“Yes.””

“After ten years?””

She nodded.

“He said he spent years wondering if leaving was the biggest mistake of his life.””

I stared at her.

“And you let him back in?””

“He’s her biological father.””

I felt something inside me snap.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“That sentence.””

Renee frowned.

“What sentence?””

“He’s her biological father.””

I walked closer.

“Everyone keeps saying that like it erases everything else.””

“It doesn’t.””

“Then why am I the only one who gets erased?””

She had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

My phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

A message.

From Aaliyah.

*Can we talk? Please don’t be angry.*

I stared at the screen.

A part of me wanted to ignore it.

A part of me wanted to drive straight there.

Because despite everything…

Despite the hurt…

She was still Aaliyah.

The little girl who asked me if I was going to leave.

The little girl who believed everyone left.

I typed back.

*Where?*

Her reply came almost immediately.

*The park where you taught me to ride my bike.*

My heart stopped.

Because she remembered.

At least she remembered something.

The park looked smaller than I remembered.

That happened with childhood places.

They seemed enormous when you were young.

Now, the playground was just metal and plastic.

The hill where Aaliyah learned to ride her bike was barely a slope.

But I still saw it.

I still saw the little girl with scraped knees.

The little girl who screamed that she was going too fast.

The little girl who looked back at me instead of looking ahead.

Aaliyah was sitting on the old wooden bench when I arrived.

No graduation gown.

No Derek.

Just her.

For the first time all day, she looked twenty-two again.

Not certain.

Not defensive.

Just lost.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.””

I sat beside her.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Finally, she whispered, “Mom told you.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew she would tell you eventually.””

“Did you know about the DNA test?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

I believed her.

At least about that.

“Then what did you know?””

She looked at the ground.

“That Dad wasn’t always sure.””

I swallowed.

“Derek.””

She nodded.

“Yeah.””

“Did you know he might not be your father?””

“No.””

“Then why today?””

She looked away.

“Because he asked for a chance.””

I nodded slowly.

“And I didn’t deserve one?””

Her eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“No, answer me.””

She looked hurt.

“I never said that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

She wiped a tear.

“I was confused.””

“About what?””

“About who I was.””

That surprised me.

She continued.

“When Dad came back, he told me things I never knew.””

“Like what?””

“That he loved me.””

I looked away.

Because that sentence hurt more than I expected.

“Aaliyah, loving someone isn’t the same as showing up.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“He told me you hated him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said you always wanted him gone.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

I shook my head.

“Aaliyah, I never stopped you from knowing him.””

“I know.””

“I kept his pictures.””

“I know.””

“I answered every question you asked.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Her tears fell.

“Because I was angry.””

“At me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“At myself.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I spent years wondering why he didn’t want me.””

Her voice cracked.

“And when he came back, I wanted to believe there was a reason.””

I looked down.

“And I became the person standing in the way.””

She nodded.

The truth hurt.

But at least it was finally the truth.

Then she said something I wasn’t ready for.

“Marcus, there’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Dad didn’t come back because he missed me.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Then why?””

She looked toward the dark playground.

“Because he found Ethan.””

I frowned.

“Ethan?””

May you like

She nodded.

“He found my biological father.””
