Chapter 10: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph in Ethan’s hand.

Then at him.

Then back at the photograph.

My brain kept trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.

It was me.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

Aaliyah.

Except I had never been there.

I had never held her as a baby.

At least…

I thought I hadn’t.

“Marcus?”” Aaliyah whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t why Ethan knew me.

The question was why I didn’t know myself.

Ethan stepped inside slowly.

Not like someone entering a home.

Like someone entering a place where he knew he wasn’t welcome.

“I know how this looks.””

I laughed quietly.

“You think?””

His eyes moved to the photograph.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I looked at Renee.

She was pale.

Terrified.

“Did you know?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Amazing,” I whispered.

Aaliyah looked between us.

“Mom?””

Renee sat down.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I intended.

“No more explanations.””

Everyone went quiet.

I pointed at the photograph.

“I want the truth.””

Ethan nodded.

“You deserve it.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that like you’re the one giving me something.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No defense.

No anger.

Just acceptance.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Years ago?””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan took a breath.

“It means you and I have met before.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“What?””

I looked at Ethan.

“When?””

He looked at Renee.

She closed her eyes.

Then he answered.

“Before you married her.””

The room became silent.

I felt like I was standing outside my own life, watching someone else’s story.

“No.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“I don’t remember you.””

“I know.””

“Then why do you have that picture?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I was there when Aaliyah was born.””

I looked at Renee.

“Explain.””

She started crying.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“After ten years?””

Her tears fell.

“I was afraid.””

I turned away.

Because I couldn’t hear that word again.

Not from her.

Not from anyone.

Ethan placed the file on the table.

“There are things you need to know about that day.””

I looked at him.

“Start talking.””

He nodded.

“When Aaliyah was born, Derek was there.””

I knew that.

“He was excited.””

I looked down.

“But so was I.””

My chest tightened.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Renee.

Because that answer belonged to both of them.

“Because before Derek, before the marriage, Renee and I were together.””

Aaliyah looked stunned.

“I know that part.””

Ethan nodded.

“But you don’t know the rest.””

He looked at me.

“I left because Renee told me Derek was going to be the father you needed.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

He nodded.

“You.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Ethan sat down.

“When I met you, Marcus, you were different.””

“Different how?””

“You cared about Aaliyah before you even knew what role you would have in her life.””

The room blurred slightly.

A memory came back.

The first time I met Renee.

She had been exhausted.

Aaliyah had been eight.

I remembered the little girl sitting quietly in the corner, watching me.

Watching to see if I would leave.

Ethan continued.

“You were the first man she trusted after Derek disappeared.””

I looked at him.

“Then why are you saying I’m the reason she was taken from you?””

His expression changed.

“Because you became everything she needed.””

I waited.

“And because Renee used that.””

The words hit.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Renee.

“You knew if Aaliyah had me and Marcus, she would never need Derek.””

Renee started crying harder.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She didn’t answer.

Ethan continued.

“You wanted a clean life.””

My jaw tightened.

“A clean life?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“You became the perfect replacement.””

The word hurt.

Replacement.

Again.

But this time it felt different.

Because I didn’t know if I was the victim…

or the evidence.

Aaliyah stood.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying.

“I don’t understand.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Are you saying Marcus wasn’t supposed to be my dad?””

Ethan’s face softened.

“No.””

“Then what are you saying?””

He looked at her.

“I’m saying he was the best thing that happened to you.””

That sentence broke something in me.

Because after everything…

after all the secrets…

someone finally said it.

But then Ethan added:

“But he was never supposed to be lied to.””

The room went quiet.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

Again.

*Ask Ethan why he really left.*

My stomach tightened.

I showed them.

Everyone froze.

Ethan’s face changed.

“You got that?””

“Yes.””

He looked afraid.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“You know who sent it.””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

His voice dropped.

“I thought they were gone.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the window.

May you like

Then whispered:

“The person who started all of this.””
