Amused

Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Erased

The next morning, I went to Renee’s house.

Not our house.

Not anymore.

I realized that somewhere between yesterday and today, everything had become divided.

My home.

Her home.

My daughter.

Her daughter.

My family.

A question mark.

Renee opened the door and immediately knew.

“You found out.””

I held up the letter.

“How long?””

Her face went pale.

“Marcus…”

“How long did you know?””

She stepped back.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

That was everyone’s favorite answer.

Scared.

Scared people lied.

Scared people hid.

Scared people destroyed other people’s lives and called it protection.

“You told Ethan not to come back?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked away.

“I told him Derek was raising her.””

“And?””

“And I told him Aaliyah needed stability.””

My jaw tightened.

“You told him to stay away.””

“No.””

“You made him believe he had no place.””

She didn’t answer.

Because that was the truth.

I walked inside.

“How many people knew?””

“Marcus…”

“How many?””

She sat down.

“Derek knew.””

I stopped.

“Derek knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he still came back pretending to be the father who lost his child?””

“He didn’t know the whole story.””

I looked at her.

“Neither did I.””

That silence hurt more than anything.

Because she knew I was right.

Then the door opened.

Aaliyah walked in.

Both of us froze.

“I heard everything.””

Renee stood.

“Aaliyah—”

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But different.

She wasn’t angry.

She was hurt.

“You knew?””

Renee started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked around the room.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

“From the truth?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I spent my whole life thinking my biological father abandoned me.””

She looked at Renee.

“But he was looking for me.””

Then she looked at me.

“And the man who raised me didn’t even know what he was fighting.””

I looked away.

Because that sentence hurt.

But it was true.

Aaliyah turned back to Renee.

“Where is Ethan?””

Renee froze.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then who does?””

The room went silent.

Aaliyah looked at me.

Then at the letter.

Then back at Renee.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

She looked down.

The screen showed a number she didn’t recognize.

Nobody moved.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

She looked at me.

“Marcus…”

I stood.

“What?””

She held the phone away from her ear.

“It’s him.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Her lips trembled.

“The man who wrote the letter.””

She put the phone back.

“Ethan?””

A voice came through the speaker.

Aaliyah covered her mouth.

Because she had spent her entire life waiting for one person to say something.

And now he finally had.

“Is this Aaliyah?””

She couldn’t answer.

I watched the girl I raised become a child again.

Lost.

Hopeful.

Afraid.

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

The voice on the phone broke.

“Baby girl…”

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

And for the first time in ten years…

someone else got to call her that.

Then Ethan said the words none of us expected.

“I need to tell you why I disappeared.””

Aaliyah looked at me.

And I knew.

May you like

Whatever came next would decide whether we were all victims…

or whether someone had been lying from the beginning.
