Chapter 11: The Person Behind the Silence
Nobody spoke after Ethan said those words.
The person who started all of this.
That sentence stayed in the room.
Heavy.
Impossible to ignore.
Aaliyah wiped her tears.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“Who did this?””
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
She stared.
“You don’t know?””
“I know who was involved.””
“Then tell us.””
His eyes moved toward Renee.
She looked away.
That was when I understood.
There was still one more secret.
One more thing nobody wanted to say.
“Renee.””
She looked at me.
“Tell us.””
Her lips trembled.
“I was young.””
Aaliyah laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“You made choices.””
The words hit harder than yelling.
Because they were true.
Renee looked at Ethan.
“You have to tell them.””
Ethan nodded.
“Years ago, before Aaliyah was born, Renee’s father found out about me.””
I frowned.
“Her father?””
“Yes.””
Aaliyah looked confused.
“My grandfather?””
Ethan nodded.
“He didn’t approve of me.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Because he had plans for Renee.””
“What plans?””
Renee whispered:
“A marriage.””
Silence.
“To who?”” I asked.
She looked down.
“Derek.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Aaliyah looked between them.
“You’re saying my parents were arranged?””
“Not exactly,” Renee said.
“But they were pushed together.””
I stared.
“So Derek didn’t just happen.””
“No.””
“And Ethan?””
Renee cried.
“I was supposed to leave him.””
Aaliyah sat down.
The pain on her face was unbearable.
“Why didn’t you?””
Renee looked at her daughter.
“Because I loved him.””
Nobody expected that.
Not even Ethan.
“Then why did you leave him?””
Renee whispered:
“Because my father threatened to take everything away.””
“What everything?””
“The house.””
“The money.””
“The support.””
Aaliyah looked disgusted.
“So you chose comfort?””
Renee covered her face.
“I thought I was choosing security.””
“No.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“You chose yourself.””
The silence after that was brutal.
Then I asked:
“What does this have to do with me?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Everything.””
I waited.
“When you came into Aaliyah’s life, someone noticed.””
“Who?””
“Renee’s father.””
My eyes narrowed.
“He’s still alive?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“He didn’t want Derek replaced.””
I felt a chill.
“Because of the family image?””
“Yes.””
“So he tried to get rid of me?””
Ethan nodded.
“He tried.””
Aaliyah looked shocked.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan’s voice became quieter.
“It means the messages. The warnings. The pressure.””
He looked at me.
“They weren’t from Derek.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
Before Ethan could answer, the front door opened.
Everyone froze.
Nobody had heard a knock.
An older man stepped inside.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
I had never met him.
But I knew immediately.
Renee whispered:
“Dad.””
The man looked around.
Then smiled.
Not warmly.
Like someone who had walked into a room he owned.
“I see everyone finally decided to tell the truth.””
Aaliyah stood.
“Grandpa?””
He looked at her.
“You’ve grown.””
She stared.
“You knew?””
He smiled.
“I knew everything.””
The room went silent.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
He looked at me.
“Arthur Bennett.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way everyone reacted told me everything.
Arthur looked at Aaliyah.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t get to apologize.””
He ignored that.
Instead, he looked at me.
“You always were the difficult part.””
My hands tightened.
“What?””
“You.””
He pointed at me.
“You were never supposed to become important.””
Aaliyah stepped closer.
“Important?””
Arthur smiled.
“Yes.””
He looked at her.
“Because you were supposed to have one family.””
My voice was low.
“And you decided what that family looked like?””
Arthur didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The honesty was terrifying.
“You manipulated everyone.””
“I protected my daughter.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You controlled her.””
His expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I know enough.””
I looked at Aaliyah.
“You made sure she lost everyone who challenged your version of the story.””
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
Then he said something I would never forget.
“Careful, Marcus.””
He stepped closer.
“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””
My blood ran cold.
“What secret?””
Arthur looked at Renee.
Then at Ethan.
May you like
Then finally at Aaliyah.
“The reason Marcus was chosen in the first place.””
