Chapter 12: The Family I Never Knew

Nobody moved.

Arthur’s words hung in the air.

The reason Marcus was chosen in the first place.

I looked at Renee.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“You knew,” I whispered.

She started crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not again.””

Aaliyah looked between us.

“Mom?””

Renee covered her mouth.

Arthur stepped forward.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

I laughed.

“Funny.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed around the room.

“Everyone thinks they’re the person who deserves to reveal the truth.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody thinks I deserved to know it when it mattered.””

Nobody answered.

Arthur sighed.

“When you met Renee, you were not a random stranger.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“You had history.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I never met you.””

“Not me.””

He looked at Ethan.

“You met someone connected to me.””

I turned.

Ethan looked away.

And that scared me.

Because Ethan was the one person who had seemed honest.

“Ethan.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

He looked at me.

“That you were the person.””

My chest tightened.

“The person for what?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then Renee spoke.

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She cried.

“The first time you met Aaliyah wasn’t an accident.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

She couldn’t look at me.

“I saw you before.””

“When?””

“Before we dated.””

I stared.

“Where?””

She whispered:

“At the hospital.””

The photograph.

The baby.

The moment I didn’t remember.

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Renee’s voice broke.

“You came to visit someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at Ethan.

“His sister.””

I froze.

“My sister?””

Ethan nodded.

“You don’t remember?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You were there the night Aaliyah was born.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because your sister was Renee’s nurse.””

The room tilted.

Memories.

Pieces.

A hospital hallway.

A woman crying.

A baby wrapped in a blanket.

A voice telling me:

“She needs someone who won’t leave.””

I had forgotten.

How could I have forgotten?

Renee continued:

“After Derek left the hospital, I saw you again.””

“When?””

“Months later.””

“Where?””

“At the grocery store.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She cried.

“You were kind to Aaliyah.””

My chest tightened.

“You remembered her?””

“Yes.””

“But I didn’t remember you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Her answer was barely audible.

“Because I made sure you didn’t.””

Silence.

Aaliyah looked horrified.

“Mom.””

Renee looked at her.

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

“To build a safe life.””

I stared.

“What did you do?””

She broke down.

“I asked your sister to help me.””

My blood went cold.

“My sister?””

“She knew you.””

“How?””

“Because you had told her you wanted a family someday.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You manipulated me.””

Renee shook her head.

“I never meant to.””

“But you did.””

The truth hurt because it fit.

Every piece.

Every moment.

The timing.

The way everything happened.

The way Aaliyah entered my life.

The way Renee needed someone.

I looked at Arthur.

“And you knew?””

He nodded.

“I approved.””

Aaliyah gasped.

“Grandpa…”

Arthur didn’t care.

“You were a good candidate.””

Candidate.

The word made me sick.

“I was a person.””

“Yes.””

“But you treated me like a solution.””

Arthur looked at me.

“You were stable.””

I laughed.

“I was convenient.””

Nobody denied it.

That was the worst part.

I looked at Aaliyah.

Her face was broken.

“Marcus…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Please.””

“I need a minute.””

Because suddenly I didn’t know what hurt more.

That people had lied to me.

Or that part of me understood why they did.

I walked outside.

The night air hit my face.

Ten years.

Ten years of memories.

Were they real?

Or were they part of someone else’s plan?

My phone buzzed.

I expected another unknown message.

Another threat.

Another secret.

But it was from Aaliyah.

One sentence.

*I found something in Grandpa’s office.*

Then another message arrived.

A picture.

A document.

And at the top of the page was my name.

*Marcus Hale — Adoption and Guardianship Agreement*

I stared at the screen.

Because I had never adopted Aaliyah.

I had never signed anything.

But someone had.

May you like

And beneath my name…

was a signature that looked exactly like mine.
