Chapter 9: The Woman They Chose to Replace Me
I stared at Ryan.
"Vanessa?""
He nodded.
"She was supposed to become the controlling shareholder after the transfer.""
Daniel immediately took the photograph.
"On what legal basis?""
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"Richard had been arranging it for months.""
"Using whose shares?"" Daniel asked.
Ryan didn't answer.
I already knew.
Mine.
Or rather, the shares held in trust for me and my daughters.
I looked at Ryan.
"Did you know Vanessa was going to receive my grandmother's shares?""
"Yes.""
"And you helped?""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The answer was so simple.
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just yes.
I felt something inside me finally give way.
"Why?""
Ryan looked at me.
"Because Dad said the company needed a younger public face. Vanessa had experience with investors and corporate administration.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"She was your father's wife.""
Ryan said nothing.
"She was also your mistress.""
He looked down.
"Yes.""
"And you were helping her take control of a company built with my inheritance.""
He nodded.
I shook my head.
"How did you manage to make every part of this worse?""
He leaned forward.
"Claire, I was trying to protect myself.""
"From what?""
"My father.""
I stared at him.
"You're going to blame him for everything?""
"No. But you don't know what he was like when I was growing up.""
I folded my arms.
"Tell me.""
Ryan looked at the table.
"My father controlled everything. My school, my friends, my career. If I disagreed with him, he cut off my money. He made me feel like I owed him my entire life.""
I listened without interrupting.
He continued.
"When I started working in shipping, he told me I would never succeed without him. Every promotion, every contract, every opportunity came through his connections.""
"And that made you betray your wife?""
He shook his head.
"No. It made me afraid.""
"Afraid of losing your father's approval?""
"Afraid of losing everything.""
I looked at him.
"You already lost everything that mattered.""
He flinched.
For a moment, I almost remembered the boyish smile he used to give me when we were first dating.
But then I remembered the port.
The kiss.
The laughter.
My frozen bank cards.
The fraudulent authorization.
And the two little girls who had spent their first three months without their father.
I stood.
"This conversation is over.""
Ryan reached for my hand.
"Claire, please.""
I pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
He lowered his voice.
"I want to make things right.""
"Then tell the truth.""
"I am.""
"No. You're telling us the parts that might save you.""
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel remained silent.
I continued.
"Tell us what happened during those seven months.""
Ryan stared at me.
Then he finally spoke.
According to Ryan, Richard had been facing a severe financial crisis before his voyage.
Several loans were approaching maturity.
The company had lost major contracts.
And a lender had threatened to seize assets unless additional security could be provided.
Richard knew about my grandmother's trust.
He had known for years.
But the trust was protected by an independent administrator, and the shares could not simply be transferred.
So he developed another plan.
He wanted to create a new corporate structure.
Bennett Coastal Logistics would become the public face of the business.
Vanessa would be positioned as the new controlling executive.
Ryan would serve as the operational director.
And the family trust's shares would supposedly be transferred through a series of documents that made it appear I had approved the arrangement.
"Why did Vanessa need to be involved?"" I asked.
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
"She had connections with the lenders.""
"Connections?""
"She knew people who could arrange financing.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was taking notes.
Ryan continued.
"Richard married her because he wanted to secure her loyalty.""
I stared.
"That's what the marriage was about?""
"Partly.""
"And the affair?""
Ryan hesitated.
"That wasn't planned.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course.""
He looked frustrated.
"Claire, I'm telling you the truth.""
"Then keep going.""
He swallowed.
"Vanessa and I started spending time together during the voyage. She was handling paperwork remotely. I was helping coordinate the company's operations.""
"How romantic.""
He ignored the remark.
"She told me she wanted to leave Richard. She said their marriage was only business.""
"And you believed her?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because she told me she loved me.""
I stared at him.
I couldn't believe that was his defense.
He had betrayed me because another woman told him she loved him.
Meanwhile, I had been sitting alone in a hospital room, holding our newborn daughters and wondering when he would call.
I looked away.
"Go on.""
Ryan continued.
"Vanessa promised that once the company was restructured, we could start over.""
"Without me.""
He nodded.
"And without Richard.""
I laughed.
"So you planned to take my inheritance, abandon your wife and children, and then run away with your father's wife?""
Ryan's face tightened.
"When you say it like that—"
"How else should I say it?""
He fell silent.
Daniel closed his notebook.
"Mr. Bennett, I think we have enough information for now. Any further statements should be provided through the proper legal process.""
Ryan stood.
"Claire, can I speak to you alone?""
"No.""
"Please.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
He glanced toward Daniel.
Then he said quietly, "Because there's something else about the twins.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Ryan swallowed.
"Richard knows about the trust's provisions for them.""
I stared.
"Yes. We already know that.""
"No. You don't understand.""
He looked directly at me.
"He has been trying to challenge their beneficiary status.""
I felt cold.
"Why?""
"Because if the trust remains intact, the girls become beneficiaries automatically. He wants to argue that they aren't eligible.""
I stared at him.
"They're my daughters.""
"I know.""
"Your daughters.""
"I know, Claire.""
"Then why would you help him?""
Ryan didn't answer.
Daniel stood.
"That's enough. We will address the trust's beneficiary provisions directly with the administrator.""
Ryan looked at me one last time.
"Please don't let Dad get to the girls.""
I stared at him.
"You should have thought about that before helping him.""
He left.
That evening, Emily came over.
She brought dinner and helped me bathe the twins.
For the first time in days, I managed to sit down and eat a full meal.
Emily watched me carefully.
"You're quieter.""
"I'm tired.""
"I know.""
She placed a hand over mine.
"Are you okay?""
I looked toward the nursery.
"No. But I'm getting there.""
Emily nodded.
"That's enough for today.""
After dinner, I put Lily and Grace to bed.
I stood between their cribs, watching their tiny chests rise and fall.
My grandmother had wanted to protect them.
I needed to make sure that protection remained intact.
My phone vibrated.
An email from Daniel.
The subject line read:
*URGENT — COMPANY SHAREHOLDER RECORDS.*
I opened it.
Attached were several pages from the company's official registry.
Daniel had highlighted a recent entry.
A transfer of shares had been recorded two weeks earlier.
The transferor was listed as the Claire Bennett Family Trust.
The recipient was Vanessa Cole.
I read the entry again.
Two weeks earlier.
That was after I had given birth.
After Ryan had returned to sea.
After he had promised me that everything was being handled.
I immediately called Daniel.
He answered.
"Claire, did you see the attachment?""
"Yes. Is this real?""
"The registry shows that the transfer was recorded. However, the underlying authorization is being challenged.""
"Can they just transfer the shares?""
"Not lawfully without the necessary authority. We're requesting the original submission and supporting documentation.""
I stared at the page.
"How many shares?""
He gave me the figure.
It represented a substantial portion of the company's ownership.
"Daniel, does this mean Vanessa owns the company?""
"Not necessarily. Registration and legal entitlement are separate questions, particularly where an underlying trust interest is disputed.""
I sat down.
"Then why does her name appear?""
"Because someone submitted documents purporting to authorize the transfer.""
I swallowed.
"Who signed them?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, "That's the problem.""
"What?""
"The authorization carries your signature.""
I closed my eyes.
Again.
Another document.
Another forged signature.
I whispered, "Ryan.""
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"We're not going to assume who signed it until the evidence is examined.""
I looked at the twins' nursery door.
"What happens now?""
"We'll request an urgent review of the transfer and seek to preserve the shares while the dispute is investigated.""
I nodded.
Then I noticed another attachment.
A scanned letter from the company's board.
I opened it.
It was dated three days earlier.
The board had scheduled an extraordinary meeting to confirm the new ownership structure.
And the proposed chairperson was Vanessa Cole.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"When is the meeting?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
"Tomorrow?""
"Yes.""
"Can they approve everything before we challenge it?""
"We've already sent formal notices. But I want to make sure the board understands that the ownership is disputed.""
I looked at the clock.
It was nearly nine.
"What do you need from me?""
Daniel paused.
"Your grandmother's original trust documents. And there's one more person we need to speak with.""
"Who?""
"The independent trustee.""
I stared at the email.
"Do we know who that is?""
Daniel replied quietly.
"Yes. I found the appointment records this afternoon.""
"Who?""
He gave me a name.
I froze.
It was a name I hadn't heard in years.
A woman who had attended my grandmother's funeral.
A woman who had once held my hand and promised to look after me.
My grandmother's oldest friend.
"Mrs. Eleanor Hayes?""
"Exactly.""
I remembered her.
She had been a retired accountant who rarely spoke at family gatherings.
She had attended my wedding and given me a small silver bracelet.
I had assumed she was simply a family friend.
But apparently, she had been responsible for protecting my inheritance all along.
Daniel continued.
"I contacted her office. She's willing to meet us tomorrow.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
Then he added:
"Claire, there's something unusual about the original trust agreement.""
"What?""
"The trustee's records indicate that Eleanor has never authorized any transfer of your grandmother's shares.""
I frowned.
"Then how did Vanessa get them?""
"That's exactly what we're trying to establish.""
I looked down at the registry document.
Something didn't make sense.
If Eleanor had never authorized the transfer, how had the shares been registered in Vanessa's name?
And why had Richard been so confident that the arrangement would work?
I enlarged the scanned signature page.
Then I noticed something at the bottom.
A witness's signature.
Ryan Bennett.
I stared.
He had witnessed the transfer.
But the date was three days after he claimed to have been away at sea.
I called Daniel again.
"Daniel, look at the date.""
"I have.""
"Ryan told us he was offshore.""
"I know.""
"Then how did he witness this document?""
Daniel was silent.
Finally, he said:
"Claire, I think your husband has been lying about where he spent part of his seven-month voyage.""
The following morning, I arrived at Eleanor Hayes's office with Daniel.
She was an elegant woman in her late seventies, with silver hair and sharp blue eyes.
When she saw me, she stood immediately.
"Claire.""
I approached her.
"Mrs. Hayes.""
She embraced me.
For a moment, I was transported back to my grandmother's funeral.
Then she stepped back and studied my face.
"You look exhausted, sweetheart.""
I gave her a small smile.
"It's been a difficult few months.""
She glanced at Daniel.
"I understand.""
We sat down.
Daniel explained the attempted property transfer, the disputed inheritance withdrawal, and the corporate share registration.
Eleanor listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she opened a locked cabinet.
She removed a large folder.
"I have been waiting for this day.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
She placed the folder on the desk.
"Your grandmother asked me to keep these documents safe in case Richard ever attempted to interfere with the trust.""
I stared.
"She knew he might try?""
"She was certain he would.""
Eleanor opened the folder.
Inside were original agreements, signed letters, and several sealed envelopes.
Then she removed a document and placed it in front of me.
It was a handwritten instruction from my grandmother.
I read the first line.
If Richard Bennett ever attempts to transfer the shares without Claire's consent, the trustee must immediately exercise the protective provisions.
I looked up.
"What are the protective provisions?""
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"Your grandmother built something into the trust that Richard never knew existed.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"What?""
Eleanor opened another document.
And as I read the first paragraph, I realized that my grandmother hadn't simply protected my inheritance.
She had given me the power to decide the future of the entire company.
But before Eleanor could explain, her office door opened.
A young assistant stepped inside.
"Mrs. Hayes, I'm sorry to interrupt.""
Eleanor looked up.
"What is it?""
The assistant held a tablet.
"The board has just received a message from Mr. Richard Bennett.""
Daniel frowned.
"What message?""
The assistant turned the screen toward us.
It was an official notice.
The extraordinary shareholders' meeting had been moved forward.
Instead of tomorrow morning, it would begin in forty minutes.
And Richard had included a final statement:
*The Bennett family trust has already approved the transfer. Any objection from Claire Bennett will be treated as an attempt to disrupt the company's operations.*
I looked at Eleanor.
She slowly closed the folder.
May you like
Then she said something that made Daniel immediately reach for his phone.
"Richard has just made the biggest mistake of his life.""
