Amused

Chapter 1: The Recording That Changed Everything

The blue loading circle spun on Marcus's phone.

I watched it turn around and around, each rotation tightening something inside my chest.

Ethan stood near the dining room wall, one hand pressed against his bleeding lip. His father stood between us, still convinced he was protecting an innocent woman from a dangerous son.

And I stood there in my torn red dress, pretending to be terrified.

"Marcus," I whispered, touching his arm.

"Please. We don't need to do this.""

Ethan let out a bitter laugh.

"Funny. Five minutes ago, she was perfectly happy to do this.""

Marcus didn't look at him.

"Be quiet, Ethan.""

"Just watch the recording, Dad.""

The application finally opened.

A thumbnail appeared on the screen, showing the dining room from the ceiling camera. The timestamp read 8:42 p.m.

Marcus tapped it.

The video began.

On the screen, I was standing beside the dining table in my red dress. Ethan was across from me, his hands resting at his sides.

The camera had captured everything.

Including the three hundred thousand dollars.

Including the envelope.

And including the moment I tore my own dress.

My throat went dry.

"Marcus, darling," I said softly.

"Maybe we should talk about this privately.""

He raised one finger.

"Not now, Vanessa.""

I stopped speaking.

The recording continued.

My recorded voice filled the dining room.

"Take the money and disappear.""

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

Ethan didn't move.

On the screen, he shook his head and stepped away from the table.

"You're unbelievable," recorded Ethan's voice said.

Then came my own words.

"Your father loves me.""

"And he's my father.""

"And he's my husband.""

Marcus looked at me.

Not for long.

Just one second.

But it was enough.

The recording continued.

It showed Ethan refusing the money. It showed him trying to leave. It showed me reaching toward his phone.

Then the dress tore.

The glass shattered.

And I began screaming.

Marcus's face slowly changed.

The recording showed me slapping my own cheek.

It showed me knocking the money onto the floor.

It showed Ethan backing away with both hands raised.

Then the recording captured my accusation.

"Your son attacked me!""

The room became completely silent.

Marcus paused the video.

His thumb remained on the screen.

He looked at me.

"Vanessa.""

I swallowed.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"What was that?""

I forced my lips into a trembling smile.

"Darling, I can explain.""

"Explain what?""

I glanced at Ethan.

He was watching me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something worse.

He looked relieved.

As if he had been waiting months for this moment.

"Marcus," I began, "you have to understand. Ethan was pressuring me. He wanted money, and when I refused—"

"Play the rest," Ethan interrupted.

Marcus looked at him.

"There's more?""

"Yes.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Marcus pressed play.

The video continued beyond the moment when I had started screaming.

It showed Marcus entering the room.

It showed me pointing at Ethan.

It showed the punch.

Then Ethan looked directly toward the camera.

And he said something that made my stomach twist.

"At least this time, there's a witness.""

Marcus stopped the video.

"What does that mean?"" he demanded.

Ethan wiped his mouth.

"It means this isn't the first time.""

I immediately shook my head.

"That's ridiculous.""

Ethan turned toward his father.

"Ask her about the garage.""

"What about the garage?"" Marcus asked.

"Ask her why I was forbidden from showing you the photographs.""

I laughed nervously.

"Marcus, he's trying to confuse you.""

Ethan didn't look at me.

"Three months ago, I came home early. I found her in your office, opening your personal safe.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"What?""

"She told me she was looking for an insurance document. I asked why she was using your private key. She said she had permission.""

I stared at Ethan.

He was supposed to have kept quiet.

That was what he had promised after I threatened to tell Marcus about the money he had borrowed from his father.

"You were snooping through my father's office," I snapped.

Ethan finally looked at me.

"And you were copying his signature.""

Marcus slowly lowered his phone.

"Vanessa?""

I forced a laugh.

"That's absurd. He has been making accusations about me since the day we met.""

"Then why did you tell me you had never entered my office?"" Marcus asked.

"Because I didn't want to upset you.""

"That's not an answer.""

I stepped closer.

"Marcus, sweetheart, listen to me. Your son has never accepted our marriage. He wants you to himself. He has always wanted that.""

Ethan shook his head.

"That's what she keeps telling you because it's easier than admitting what she's doing.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"Enough. I want the truth. Both of you.""

For a moment, I thought I could still control the situation.

Marcus had believed me for eighteen months.

He had believed me when I said Ethan was disrespectful.

He had believed me when I said Ethan deliberately embarrassed me at family dinners.

He had believed me when I cried after Ethan refused to call me Mom.

I knew which words made Marcus feel guilty.

I knew how to make him put his arms around me.

And I knew how to make him doubt his son.

So I did what had always worked.

I lowered my voice.

"Marcus, I know you love Ethan. I have never tried to come between you. But he just accused me of stealing from you. Do you really think I would do something like that after everything we've built?""

Marcus didn't answer.

I touched his cheek.

"Look at me.""

He looked.

I let a tear roll down my face.

"Do you believe him?""

For the first time in eighteen months, Marcus didn't immediately reassure me.

Instead, he looked at the money.

Then at the envelope.

"What's in there?"" he asked.

I glanced down.

"Nothing important.""

"Then open it.""

"It's private.""

"Vanessa.""

His voice was different now.

I picked up the envelope, holding it against my chest.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Open it, Dad.""

Marcus extended his hand.

"Give it to me.""

I hesitated.

Then I handed it over.

He tore the envelope open.

Inside were four documents.

The first was a bank transfer authorization.

The second was a printed account statement.

The third was a copy of Marcus's signature.

And the fourth was a letter.

Marcus read the first page.

His forehead creased.

Then he turned to the second.

His face lost its color.

"Vanessa," he said slowly, "why is there a transfer authorization for three hundred thousand dollars from my private investment account?""

I blinked.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

He held up the paper.

"This has my name on it.""

"Yes.""

"And it has your signature as the authorized recipient.""

I stared at the document.

Ethan folded his arms.

"Now ask her why she needed me to take the money.""

Marcus looked at his son.

"What?""

"She wasn't trying to pay me to leave. She was trying to make it look like I accepted stolen money.""

Marcus looked down at the documents again.

My mouth went dry.

"That's not true.""

Ethan continued.

"She wanted your fingerprints on the money and my name on the envelope. If I had taken it, she could have claimed I stole it from your account.""

Marcus slowly turned toward me.

"Is that what you were doing?""

"No!""

"Then why did you tell him to take it and disappear?""

"Because I wanted him away from us!""

"Us?"" Ethan repeated.

"Or away from the truth?""

I raised my voice.

"You ungrateful little—"

"Vanessa!"" Marcus shouted.

I stopped.

It was the first time in months he had raised his voice at me.

He looked down at the documents again.

"Where did you get this authorization?""

I tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

Then Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black flash drive.

"I have the original files," he said.

Marcus stared at it.

"What files?""

"Everything she did in your office.""

My heart began hammering.

Marcus took the flash drive.

"How long have you had this?""

"Six weeks.""

"Six weeks?"" Marcus repeated.

Ethan nodded.

"I wanted to show you. But she told me you wouldn't believe me. She said if I tried, she'd make sure you thought I was stealing from you.""

Marcus's eyes moved toward the torn dress.

Then toward his son's split lip.

A terrible silence settled over the room.

Finally, Marcus asked the question I had been dreading.

"Why didn't you show me sooner?""

Ethan looked at his father for a long moment.

Then he answered quietly.

"Because the last time I tried to tell you something about her, you told me I was jealous of your happiness.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

And for the first time that night, he looked ashamed.

But I wasn't finished.

I couldn't let them turn against me.

I had spent too much time building this life.

The house.

The marriage.

The bank accounts.

The beautiful woman everyone thought Marcus had rescued from loneliness.

I wasn't going to lose it because a twenty-three-year-old boy had found a camera.

I stepped toward Marcus.

"Darling, please. We can discuss this tomorrow. You're tired.

Ethan is upset. And I'm standing here practically half-dressed.""

Marcus didn't move.

"Go upstairs.""

I blinked.

"What?""

"Go upstairs. I'll deal with this.""

I almost smiled.

That was better.

He was still protecting me.

I turned toward the staircase.

Then he spoke again.

"Not to our bedroom. Go to the guest room.""

My smile disappeared.

"Marcus?""

"Now.""

I stared at him.

Then at Ethan.

His expression remained unreadable.

I walked upstairs without another word.

But as I reached the landing, I heard Ethan speak.

"Dad, there's something else.""

I stopped.

"What?"" Marcus asked.

Ethan's voice dropped.

"She didn't just forge your signature.""

A pause followed.

"She used Mom's old account.""

I gripped the railing.

Marcus went completely still.

"What account?""

"The one you thought was closed seven years ago.""

And suddenly, I understood.

May you like

Ethan had found more than the money.

He had found the secret I had spent eighteen months trying to bury.
