Amused

Chapter 8: The Sister I Thought I Had Lost

"Vanessa?""

Marcus's voice sounded distant.

I couldn't take my eyes off the photograph.

Emily was lying in a hospital bed.

Her dark hair was shorter than I remembered, and her face looked thinner.

But it was her.

My little sister.

The girl who used to steal my clothes.

The woman who had disappeared seven years earlier.

The person I had spent years believing had abandoned me.

"Where did you get that?"" Marcus asked.

I picked up my phone.

"Daniel sent it.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"Who's Emily?""

"My sister.""

Robert looked at the photograph.

"Is she involved in the investigation?""

I shook my head.

"She disappeared seven years ago.""

Margaret's expression changed.

"Seven years ago?""

I nodded.

"Three days before Rebecca's accident.""

Marcus looked at me.

"You never told me you had a missing sister.""

"Because I thought she was dead.""

The room fell silent.

Then Rebecca's voice came through Robert's phone.

"Vanessa, listen carefully.""

I turned toward the device.

"How do you know about Emily?""

Rebecca took a breath.

"Because she helped me survive.""

My legs weakened.

"What?""

"Emily was with me that night.""

I stared at the phone.

Rebecca continued.

"She was the person who pulled me out of the car.""

I covered my mouth.

"That's impossible.""

"She was injured too. Daniel's men were looking for both of us. We were taken to different medical facilities under false identities.""

I shook my head.

"Why didn't she contact me?""

"Because Daniel threatened you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"He threatened everyone.""

"Yes," Rebecca said.

"And he was very good at making people believe he could reach anyone.""

I sat down.

For seven years, I had told myself Emily had chosen to leave.

I had believed she had stolen money from our mother's estate and disappeared.

I had hated her for abandoning me.

But she had been protecting Rebecca.

And perhaps protecting me.

"Is she alive?"" I whispered.

Rebecca answered immediately.

"Yes.""

I began crying.

"Where is she?""

"She's safe for now.""

"Then bring her home.""

A pause.

"Vanessa, I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel has been watching the people connected to her.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Rebecca, we need to involve the authorities.""

"I know. But Daniel has already threatened to move her if he suspects we're getting close.""

Robert looked at the officer.

"We need to treat this as a possible kidnapping.""

The officer nodded.

"I'll contact the appropriate unit.""

I stood abruptly.

"I'll go.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Where?""

"To the hospital.""

"No.""

"She's my sister!""

"And Daniel wants you there.""

I shook my head.

"I don't care.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"That's exactly what he wants. He wants you to act without thinking.""

I stared at him.

"You're not going to tell me how to save my sister.""

He lowered his voice.

"I'm trying to keep you alive.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Ethan approached.

"Vanessa.""

I turned toward him.

He held out his phone.

"Look at this.""

It was another message from Daniel.

*The old hospital. 5:00 a.m. Bring the deed and the trust documents. Come alone.*

I looked at him.

"He knows where we are.""

Ethan nodded.

"He's been watching the house.""

Marcus turned toward Robert.

"Call the police. Now.""

At 2:24 a.m., the officers began coordinating with the regional investigation team.

Robert provided copies of the financial documents.

Margaret supplied Rebecca's recordings.

Ethan showed them the photographs Daniel had sent.

I sat at the dining table, holding my phone with both hands.

My sister was alive.

That was the only thought I could hold onto.

Marcus placed a glass of water in front of me.

"Drink.""

I looked at him.

"Why are you helping me?""

He frowned.

"Because someone is threatening your sister.""

"After everything I've done?""

He sat across from me.

"Helping someone isn't the same as forgiving them.""

I lowered my eyes.

"I don't deserve it.""

"That's not my decision to make tonight.""

I took a sip of water.

Then I whispered, "I used to tell Emily that Daniel was the only person who understood me.""

Marcus didn't answer.

"He made me believe my family wanted to control me. He said my sister was jealous. He said Rebecca was trying to destroy my marriage.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"He separated me from everyone.""

Ethan stood nearby.

"Mom told me something once.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"She said people who want control don't always start by taking your money. Sometimes they start by making you distrust everyone who loves you.""

My eyes filled.

I looked at him.

"Your mother was right.""

Ethan nodded.

"She usually was.""

At 3:11 a.m., Margaret received a call.

She listened for nearly a minute.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"Rebecca wants to speak to Vanessa.""

I took the phone.

"Hello?""

"Vanessa.""

Rebecca's voice was softer now.

"I need you to remember something.""

"What?""

"Seven years ago, Emily came to me with a package.""

I frowned.

"What package?""

"Original financial records. She had taken them from Daniel's office.""

I closed my eyes.

"She told me she wanted to give them to the police. But Daniel discovered what she had done.""

"What happened?""

"He followed her. There was an argument. She escaped, but he found her again.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did he hurt her?""

"Yes.""

I began crying.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was afraid.""

"Of Daniel?""

"Of what he would do to you.""

I looked toward the window.

Rebecca continued.

"Emily believed Daniel had enough evidence to send you to prison. She thought if she disappeared, he would stop using you.""

I covered my mouth.

That sounded exactly like Emily.

She had always tried to protect me, even when I didn't deserve it.

"Where is she now?""

"At a private medical facility outside the city.""

"Then why is Daniel sending me photographs from there?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Because he has someone working inside.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"I don't know yet.""

Then she added, "But there is something else.""

I waited.

"Emily has the original ledger.""

"What ledger?""

"The one Daniel used to track every payment, every transfer, and every person involved in his operation.""

I stared at the table.

"Where is it?""

"With Emily.""

"Then why doesn't she give it to the police?""

"Because the ledger contains something that could implicate you.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

Rebecca's answer was quiet.

"Your signature.""

At 4:02 a.m., the officer received confirmation that a medical facility matching the photograph had been identified.

The address was outside the city.

A small private hospital that had recently changed ownership.

Marcus looked at the location.

"How far?""

"About forty minutes," the officer answered.

Robert shook his head.

"We cannot simply send Vanessa there.""

I stood.

"I'm going.""

The officer looked at me.

"Mrs. Cole, we need to establish a safe approach.""

"I don't care about the approach. I want to see my sister.""

Marcus stepped in front of me.

"You're not going alone.""

"I didn't ask you to come.""

"I'm not asking permission.""

I stared at him.

For eighteen months, Marcus had protected me from uncomfortable questions.

Now he was protecting me from a man I had once helped.

The irony wasn't lost on me.

Ethan picked up his jacket.

"I'm coming too.""

Marcus looked at him.

"No.""

"Dad—"

"You've been through enough tonight.""

Ethan shook his head.

"Emily saved Mom. She helped protect the trust. I want to help her.""

Marcus looked at him for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"All right. But you stay with the officers.""

At 4:46 a.m., we reached the hospital.

The building was small, surrounded by trees and a metal fence.

Two officers approached the main entrance while another team circled the rear.

Marcus remained beside me.

Ethan stood near the vehicle.

Robert was speaking to the local security supervisor.

I stared through the glass doors.

Then I saw her.

A woman standing near the reception desk.

Dark hair.

Thin face.

A pale blue sweater.

Emily.

My sister.

I ran before anyone could stop me.

"Emily!""

She turned.

For one second, she looked confused.

Then her eyes widened.

"Vanessa?""

I crossed the lobby and threw my arms around her.

She felt so small.

So fragile.

And so real.

I held her as tightly as I could.

"You're alive.""

She began crying.

"I know.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

Emily buried her face against my shoulder.

"I couldn't.""

"You could have told me something.""

"I was trying to keep you safe.""

I pulled back.

"From Daniel?""

She nodded.

I touched her face.

"Seven years, Emily.""

"I know.""

"I thought you were dead.""

"I'm sorry.""

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to demand explanations.

But when I looked at her, I saw the little girl who used to hide behind me during thunderstorms.

And I couldn't bring myself to let go.

Then she looked past my shoulder.

Her expression changed.

"Where's Rebecca?""

Marcus stepped forward.

"She's safe.""

Emily shook her head.

"No. She's not.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Emily grabbed my wrist.

"Daniel knows where she is.""

An officer moved closer.

"How do you know?""

Emily looked toward the parking lot.

"Because I saw him here.""

The officer reached for his radio.

"When?""

"Yesterday.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Did he speak to you?""

Emily nodded.

"He wanted the ledger.""

"And?""

"I told him I didn't have it.""

I looked at her.

"But you do.""

Emily's eyes filled.

She slowly reached into her bag and pulled out a small black notebook.

"This is the original.""

Robert moved toward us.

"Don't open it here.""

Emily shook her head.

"There's something inside you need to see.""

She turned to me.

"Vanessa, I didn't just keep Daniel's financial records.""

She opened the notebook to the final page.

There was a photograph attached to it.

A photograph of me.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

Seven years earlier.

I stared at the image.

I recognized the hospital.

I recognized the bed.

And I recognized the woman lying in it.

It was Rebecca.

But I had never been there.

At least, I had no memory of visiting her.

Emily whispered, "You were there that night.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Vanessa, you were.""

"That's impossible.""

She turned the photograph over.

On the back, in Daniel's handwriting, were six words.

*She agreed to help us finish it.*

I looked at Emily.

"What does that mean?""

Before she could answer, every light in the hospital lobby went out.

A loud crash came from the rear entrance.

Then a man's voice shouted:

May you like

"Nobody move!""

And from somewhere behind the reception desk, I heard Daniel laughing.
