Amused

Chapter 5: The Man Waiting Outside

Ethan stood in the doorway, holding his phone.

"How long has Daniel been here?""

I stared at the photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside a black SUV near the front gate.

The timestamp was 12:21 a.m.

Three minutes earlier.

I forced a laugh.

"That could be anyone.""

Ethan enlarged the photograph.

"That's your former husband.""

"I don't know why you're showing me this.""

"Because he just sent me a message.""

My heart lurched.

"What?""

Ethan turned the screen toward me.

The message was short.

*Tell Vanessa I have the original hospital file.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Ethan watched me carefully.

"Do you want to tell me what that means?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He nodded slowly.

"That's what I expected.""

He turned to leave.

"Wait.""

He stopped.

I stood up.

"What are you going to do?""

"Show my father.""

"Don't.""

Ethan looked back.

"Why?""

"Because this has nothing to do with you.""

He gave a short laugh.

"Seven hundred thousand dollars from my mother's trust says otherwise.""

I stepped toward him.

"Your mother made mistakes. She wasn't perfect.""

His jaw tightened.

"Don't.""

"What? You think she was some kind of saint?""

"I think she was my mother.""

I folded my arms.

"And I think you should stop hiding behind a dead woman.""

Ethan stared at me for several seconds.

Then he said quietly, "You know what's strange?""

I didn't answer.

"She never hated you.""

I looked away.

"She didn't even know me.""

"She knew enough.""

He showed me another message.

It was an old email from Rebecca to Margaret Ellis.

The subject line read: VANESSA.

The message contained only three sentences.

I believe she is being controlled by Daniel.

I don't know whether she understands what he is doing.

If she ever comes into this family, please make sure she has a way to get help.

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.

Rebecca had known.

She had suspected Daniel was controlling me.

She had even tried to protect me.

And I had spent years telling myself she was an obstacle.

"Where did you get that?"" I whispered.

"Mom's old email archive.""

"She was spying on me.""

Ethan shook his head.

"No. She was worried about you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"How convenient.""

He slipped his phone into his pocket.

"Daniel is outside. Dad is calling security. You should probably stay here.""

Then he walked away.

I watched him disappear down the hallway.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Daniel had been lying to me from the beginning.

At 12:34 a.m., Marcus entered the guest room.

He carried a small cardboard box.

"Pack your essentials.""

I stared at him.

"You're still serious?""

"Yes.""

"Where am I supposed to go?""

"That's not my responsibility tonight.""

I stood up.

"Marcus, please. I need you to listen.""

He placed the box on the bed.

"I'm listening.""

I swallowed.

"Daniel is dangerous.""

Marcus's expression didn't change.

"You're going to have to be more specific.""

"He has been controlling me for years.""

"Then why were you working with him?""

"I wasn't.""

Marcus stared at me.

I lowered my voice.

"He told me he had divorced me. He said everything was legal. He said he had handled the paperwork.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You're telling me a man who supposedly ruined your life was also helping you steal from my family?""

I looked down.

"I thought I could trust him.""

"Did you?""

I didn't answer.

Marcus sat in the chair near the window.

For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.

"Vanessa, I need you to understand something.""

I waited.

"I don't care whether you loved me.""

The words hurt.

"I don't care whether you wanted a better life.""

He continued.

"I care that you used my son. I care that you tried to make me believe he was dangerous. I care that you took money Rebecca left behind.""

I felt tears slipping down my face.

"I never wanted Ethan to get hurt.""

Marcus looked at me.

"You tore your own dress and screamed that he attacked you.""

I lowered my head.

"I panicked.""

"You slapped yourself.""

"I know.""

"You made me hit my own son.""

My throat tightened.

"Marcus...""

He stood.

"Do you know what I heard when I watched that recording?""

I shook my head.

"I heard my son telling me the truth while I stood there refusing to listen.""

He moved toward the door.

I grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't leave me.""

He gently removed my hand.

"You're not the person I married.""

I wanted to tell him that he was wrong.

That I had been frightened.

That Daniel had made promises.

That money had seemed like the only thing that could guarantee I would never be abandoned again.

But none of those explanations would change what I had done.

Marcus opened the door.

"Security will escort you when you're ready.""

Then he left.

At 12:48 a.m., Daniel called again.

I answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

"Outside.""

"Come to the guest entrance.""

"No. You come to me.""

I looked toward the hallway.

"Marcus knows you're here.""

"Then we don't have much time.""

"Tell me what happened to the hospital records.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Rebecca had a file containing the original transfer documents. She found out the money came from an offshore account.""

"What was the money for?""

He was silent.

"Daniel!""

"She was supposed to stop asking questions.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

"I didn't want her getting involved.""

"You said it was a donation.""

"It was supposed to be.""

"Then why did you say she was supposed to stop asking questions?""

His voice hardened.

"Because she found out where the money came from.""

I gripped the phone.

"Tell me the truth.""

"Vanessa, listen to me. I can get you out of this.""

"How?""

"I have the original documents. If we get them first, we can prove you didn't authorize the transfers.""

I almost laughed.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I can make it happen.""

"What about the seven hundred thousand dollars?""

"Recoverable.""

"The marriage certificate?""

"Already handled.""

"The four million?""

"That account is under my control.""

I closed my eyes.

"You told me it was mine.""

"It is. Technically.""

I swallowed.

"Technically?""

"Vanessa, stop asking questions. I need you to come outside.""

I looked through the window.

Daniel was standing near the gate.

He was holding a leather folder.

I recognized it.

It was the same folder he had carried during our meetings seven years earlier.

"What's inside?"" I asked.

"The truth.""

I stared at him.

Then I saw another person step out of the passenger side of his SUV.

A woman.

She wore a beige coat and held a small handbag.

Even from a distance, I recognized her.

Margaret Ellis.

Rebecca's former attorney.

I felt my blood turn cold.

"Daniel," I whispered.

"Why is Margaret with you?""

His expression changed.

"Vanessa, come outside.""

"Why is she there?""

"Because she has something we need.""

I watched Margaret approach the gate.

Then the security guard stepped in front of her.

Daniel became angry.

He shoved the folder under his arm and pointed toward the house.

I heard a loud voice behind me.

"Vanessa!""

Marcus.

He stood at the bedroom doorway.

"Get away from that window.""

I turned.

"Why?""

"Because Daniel isn't here to help you.""

I looked back outside.

Daniel was no longer alone.

A police cruiser had pulled up behind his SUV.

Two officers stepped out.

Margaret was speaking to them.

Daniel looked toward the house.

And when he saw me watching, he raised his hand.

Not in greeting.

In warning.

Marcus took my phone.

"Who have you been talking to?""

I didn't answer.

He glanced at the screen.

The call was still connected.

Daniel's voice came through.

"Vanessa, if you tell them what happened seven years ago, you're going down with me.""

Marcus heard it.

His eyes narrowed.

"What happened seven years ago?""

I looked at him.

I wanted to say nothing.

I wanted to deny everything.

But the police were now walking toward the front entrance.

And Daniel had just threatened me.

"I didn't know what he was going to do," I whispered.

Marcus stared at me.

"Do what?""

I covered my mouth.

Then I said the words I had spent seven years avoiding.

"Rebecca wasn't supposed to receive that hospital money.""

Marcus went completely still.

"What are you talking about?""

I looked toward the front gate.

Daniel was being questioned by the officers.

Margaret stood beside them, holding a second folder.

And then I saw her point directly at our house.

"Vanessa," Marcus said.

"What happened to Rebecca?""

I started crying.

"Daniel told me the hospital had made a mistake. He said the money was being transferred to the wrong account.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Was it?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Then why did you let it happen?""

I opened my mouth.

But before I could answer, Margaret entered the house with one of the officers.

She looked directly at Marcus.

"Mr. Cole, I'm sorry to arrive like this.""

Marcus stood.

"What's going on?""

Margaret placed a document on the table.

"Seven years ago, Rebecca asked me to investigate a suspicious payment made to her medical provider.""

Marcus stared at the paper.

Margaret continued.

"We discovered that the money had been transferred from an account belonging to a charitable foundation.""

I swallowed.

The officer looked at me.

"Mrs. Cole, we need you to answer some questions.""

Margaret opened the folder.

"There's one more thing.""

Marcus looked at her.

"What?""

She turned the document around.

It was a copy of a hospital payment authorization.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

But I hadn't signed it.

I knew that immediately.

May you like

Because the signature belonged to someone who had been dead for seven years.

Rebecca Cole.
