Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Photograph

The emergency lights flickered on.

A security alarm began screaming.

Someone shouted from the corridor.

Then I saw Daniel.

He stood near the rear entrance with one hand raised and the other holding a small black bag.

His eyes found mine immediately.

"Hello, Vanessa.""

Marcus stepped in front of me.

"Stay back.""

Daniel smiled.

"Marcus Cole. I was wondering when we'd finally meet properly.""

Marcus didn't move.

"You've caused enough damage.""

Daniel laughed.

"Have I?""

An officer approached from the side.

"Daniel Price! Put your hands where we can see them!""

Daniel raised both hands.

The black bag dropped to the floor.

"Relax. I'm not armed.""

The officer moved closer.

Daniel looked at me.

"Tell them why you're really here.""

I said nothing.

He smiled.

"Go ahead, Vanessa. Tell them about the photograph.""

Emily grabbed my hand.

"Don't listen to him.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Emily. Still playing the hero?""

She stepped behind me.

"Stay away from my sister.""

He laughed.

"Your sister?""

His eyes moved toward me.

"That's an interesting way to describe someone who helped me destroy Rebecca's life.""

Marcus turned toward me.

"Vanessa?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know what he's talking about.""

Daniel nodded.

"Of course you don't.""

He looked at the officers.

"Ask her about the hospital room. Ask her what she promised me.""

The officer moved closer.

"Mr. Price, turn around.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Vanessa, you remember that night.""

I stared at the photograph in Emily's hand.

A hospital room.

Rebecca lying unconscious.

My own face beside her.

I tried to remember.

There was something.

A smell.

Disinfectant.

A buzzing light.

Someone crying.

But every time I reached for the memory, it slipped away.

"I wasn't there," I whispered.

Daniel smiled.

"That's what I told you to say.""

Marcus grabbed my arm.

"What does that mean?""

I looked at him.

"I don't know.""

Daniel laughed.

"She knows. She just doesn't want to remember.""

The officer seized his arm.

Daniel suddenly twisted away.

A second officer tackled him against the wall.

The black bag was kicked across the floor.

Inside were several documents, a small laptop, and a photograph.

Daniel struggled as the officers restrained him.

"You're making a mistake!"" he shouted.

The officer tightened the handcuffs.

"You're under arrest pending further investigation.""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"You think this ends tonight?""

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

"Ask Rebecca what she did after you left that hospital.""

Then the officers escorted him outside.

At 5:12 a.m., the hospital lobby was secured.

Emily sat in a private room with a blanket around her shoulders.

Marcus stood near the window.

Ethan had arrived with another officer.

Robert was examining the documents recovered from Daniel's bag.

I sat opposite Emily.

"Tell me what happened.""

She looked down.

"Seven years ago, Daniel called me. He said you were in trouble.""

I frowned.

"What kind of trouble?""

"He said you had been arrested.""

My stomach tightened.

"That's impossible.""

"He told me you had signed documents connected to a financial fraud investigation. He said the police were looking for you.""

I shook my head.

"I wasn't arrested.""

"I know that now.""

Emily took a breath.

"He asked me to meet him at the hospital. He said he had arranged for you to receive medical treatment because you were having a breakdown.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He said you had taken something. He told me not to bring anyone.""

I pressed my hands together.

"Did I?""

Emily nodded.

"You were there.""

I felt dizzy.

"Why don't I remember?""

"Because you were barely conscious.""

Marcus turned from the window.

"What happened after that?""

Emily looked at him.

"Daniel had brought Vanessa to Rebecca's room. Rebecca was unconscious after the accident.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because Daniel wanted her to sign a document.""

"What document?""

Emily opened the black notebook.

"An authorization allowing him to access the family trust.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Rebecca would never have signed that.""

"She didn't," Emily answered.

She turned a page.

"There was another document. A medical authorization. Daniel wanted to make it look like Rebecca had been transferred to another hospital voluntarily.""

Robert looked up.

"Why?""

Emily swallowed.

"Because he needed everyone to believe she was dead.""

Marcus's face went pale.

Ethan grabbed the edge of the chair.

"Mom was alive?""

Emily nodded.

"Yes. She was unconscious, but she was alive.""

I stared at her.

"Then who was in the coffin?""

Emily looked down.

"A body from another medical facility.""

The room went silent.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Ethan covered his mouth.

Robert slowly sat down.

"Do you have evidence?""

Emily nodded.

"Everything is in the ledger.""

She turned to the final section.

"There are payment records, medical transfers, and the name of the person who arranged the substitution.""

Robert examined the page.

His face changed.

"Good God.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"What?""

Robert pointed to the final entry.

The name was clear.

*VANESSA BENNETT.*

I stared at it.

"No.""

Emily shook her head.

"Vanessa, you signed the hospital authorization.""

"I didn't!""

"You did.""

"I would never do that!""

Emily began crying.

"I know.""

I looked at her.

"Then why is my name there?""

She hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Because Daniel made you sign it.""

I shook my head.

"I don't remember.""

"You were frightened. He told you Rebecca was already dead. He said the document was only for the hospital.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Did you believe him?""

I covered my face.

"I don't know.""

Emily continued.

"After you signed it, Daniel gave you something to drink. You became confused. He told you that you had helped him protect everyone.""

I felt sick.

"Then what?""

"Then he took you home.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you stop him?""

Emily began crying harder.

"I tried.""

Her voice broke.

"He told me if I went to the police, he would show them the documents with your signature. He said you would go to prison.""

I looked down.

For seven years, I had blamed Emily for disappearing.

But she had been trying to protect me from the consequences of something I didn't even remember doing.

And I had rewarded her by believing she had abandoned me.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

Emily reached across the table.

"I know.""

At 5:46 a.m., Robert finished reviewing the ledger.

He placed it on the table.

"There's a major discrepancy.""

Marcus looked at him.

"What?""

"The hospital authorization was signed on the same date as the property transfer.""

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Robert turned the ledger around.

"The two documents were part of the same operation.""

He pointed to the entries.

"Daniel arranged for Rebecca's property to be transferred through a false power of attorney. Then he used the hospital authorization to make it appear that Rebecca had consented to the transaction.""

Marcus stared.

"How much was the property worth?""

"At the time, approximately six million dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

Six million.

That was the house Daniel had told me he purchased as an investment.

The house he had promised would belong to us.

I had never questioned where the money came from.

I had never asked why he needed my signature.

And I had never imagined the property belonged to Rebecca.

Marcus looked at me.

"Did you know?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He studied my face.

Then he asked, "Did you ever see the original deed?""

I remembered a meeting.

A table.

A folder.

Daniel's hand resting on mine.

A pen.

My signature.

And a sentence.

Just sign here, Vanessa. This is how we protect our future.

I began trembling.

"I remember signing something.""

Marcus looked away.

"What?""

"I remember Daniel telling me it was a property document.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Did you read it?""

I shook my head.

"Then I didn't understand what it was.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Vanessa...""

"I know.""

He shook his head.

"No. I don't think you do.""

He pointed toward the ledger.

"Your signature helped steal six million dollars from a woman who was trying to protect you.""

I began crying.

"I didn't know.""

"But you signed.""

I lowered my head.

There was nothing I could say.

At 6:18 a.m., the officer returned with an update.

Daniel was being held for questioning.

Investigators had also recovered several electronic devices from his vehicle.

One contained financial records.

Another contained photographs.

And the third contained audio recordings.

Robert requested that the officers preserve everything.

Then a message came through on Margaret's phone.

She read it and looked up.

"Rebecca is on her way.""

Marcus stood immediately.

"She's coming here?""

"Yes.""

Ethan moved toward the door.

"Mom is coming?""

Margaret nodded.

"She wants to see you.""

Ethan's eyes filled.

Marcus looked as though he might collapse.

After seven years of believing his wife was dead, he was finally going to see her again.

I remained seated.

I didn't know whether Rebecca would ever forgive me.

I wasn't even sure I deserved to look at her.

Then Emily touched my hand.

"She asked about you.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"Rebecca asked whether you were safe.""

I shook my head.

"Why would she care?""

Emily looked at me.

"Because she never stopped caring.""

I wiped my face.

Then I noticed something on the table.

The small photograph from the hospital.

I picked it up.

On the back, beneath Daniel's handwriting, there was another sentence I hadn't noticed before.

Written in Rebecca's handwriting.

*Vanessa doesn't know what happened after the second injection.*

I stared at the words.

"Emily.""

She looked up.

"What?""

I turned the photograph toward her.

Her face changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"It was attached to the ledger.""

She took it from me.

Then she looked toward Robert.

"Do you know what the second injection was?""

Robert shook his head.

"No.""

Emily's hands began trembling.

"Daniel told me it was medication.""

"What medication?"" Marcus asked.

She looked at me.

Then she whispered:

"It wasn't medication.""

I felt the room spin.

"What was it?""

Emily swallowed.

"Something that was supposed to make Vanessa forget.""

At 6:42 a.m., Rebecca arrived.

She entered the private room slowly, using a walking stick.

Her hair was almost completely silver.

Her face was thinner.

But her eyes were exactly as I remembered them.

Marcus stood motionless.

For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.

Then he whispered her name.

"Rebecca.""

She began crying.

"Hello, Marcus.""

He crossed the room and held her.

It wasn't a graceful embrace.

It was desperate.

He held her as if the years between them could somehow disappear.

Ethan stood nearby.

Then Rebecca reached for him.

"My baby.""

Ethan broke down.

He fell into her arms.

"Mom.""

She kissed his forehead.

"I'm here.""

He held her tightly.

"I thought you were gone.""

"I know.""

"I waited.""

"I know, sweetheart.""

Marcus touched her shoulder.

"Why didn't you come back?""

Rebecca looked at him.

"I thought I was protecting you.""

He shook his head.

"You were supposed to let me protect you.""

She lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

Then she looked at me.

Our eyes met.

I couldn't stand.

I couldn't speak.

Rebecca approached slowly.

"Vanessa.""

I looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

She pulled a chair closer.

"Look at me.""

I did.

Her expression wasn't angry.

That made it worse.

"Do you remember the hospital?""

I nodded slowly.

"Some of it.""

"Do you remember what Daniel gave you?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Rebecca looked toward Emily.

Then at Robert.

"Then we need to find the original medical records.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

Rebecca took my hand.

"Because the second injection wasn't intended to make Vanessa forget.""

I stared at her.

"What was it?""

Rebecca's eyes filled.

"It was a drug that made her extremely vulnerable to suggestion. Daniel wanted her to believe she had witnessed something that never happened.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

Rebecca looked directly at me.

"He wanted you to believe that you had watched me die.""

My blood turned cold.

"Why?""

"Because he needed you to stop asking questions.""

I began shaking.

Then Rebecca said the words that destroyed the last piece of my understanding.

"But Vanessa, there is something Daniel didn't tell you.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She took a breath.

"You weren't the only person he gave that drug to.""

I stared.

"Who else?""

Rebecca's voice broke.

"Me.""

She paused.

"And I remember what happened after he thought I was dead.""

Everyone went silent.

Rebecca looked toward the door.

Then back at Marcus.

"Daniel didn't arrange my disappearance alone.""

Marcus frowned.

"Who helped him?""

Rebecca's eyes moved toward me.

And then she said a name.

"Your brother, Marcus.""

The room froze.

Marcus stepped backward.

"My brother is dead.""

Rebecca shook her head.

"No.""

She tightened her grip on my hand.

"Your brother is the person who has been financing Daniel's operation for seven years.""

Marcus stared at her.

"That's impossible.""

Rebecca looked at Robert.

"Show him the final page of the ledger.""

Robert turned the notebook around.

At the bottom of the final page was a name.

*THOMAS COLE.*

And beneath it was a recent transaction dated that very morning.

The amount was three hundred thousand dollars.

The sender was Thomas Cole.

The recipient was Daniel Price.

But the final line contained something none of us expected.

*PAYMENT PURPOSE: VANESSA'S RELEASE.*

I looked at Marcus.

"Release from what?""

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"From the agreement you made with Thomas seven years ago.""

Marcus went completely pale.

Because suddenly, it wasn't just my past that was coming back.

May you like

It was his.

And whatever he had done seven years earlier had been the reason Daniel had been able to control all of us.
