Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Our Family Home

"Claire, whatever you do, don't sign that document.""

I held the phone against my ear.

My daughters were asleep in the nursery, and the kitchen clock showed 8:47 p.m.

I looked at the agreement Margaret had left behind.

"Why? What's wrong with it?""

My former attorney, Daniel Brooks, was silent for a moment.

"Where did you get that document?""

"My mother-in-law brought it.""

"Did Richard Bennett prepare it?""

"She said he had it prepared by an attorney.""

Daniel exhaled.

"That's concerning.""

I pulled out a chair.

"Daniel, I need you to explain what's happening.""

"First, tell me something. Has Ryan asked you to transfer ownership of the house recently?""

"No.""

"Has he asked you to sign anything concerning the property?""

"No. Why?""

"Because the document you just described appears to involve a property arrangement that I specifically warned you about three years ago.""

I looked down at the agreement.

"What arrangement?""

"Claire, do you remember the purchase of the house on Harbor Ridge?""

"Of course.""

"Do you remember why we registered the property under your name?""

I frowned.

"Ryan said it was easier for tax purposes.""

Daniel made a quiet sound.

"That wasn't the entire reason.""

I sat straighter.

"What do you mean?""

"Your husband was having financial difficulties at the time. There were outstanding business obligations connected to his father's company. We discussed the possibility that creditors could attempt to reach assets acquired in his name.""

I remembered that period.

Ryan had been working for a shipping company owned partly by Richard.

His father had been involved in a business dispute with another investor.

There had been arguments, phone calls, and several envelopes from lawyers.

Ryan had told me not to worry.

He said everything had been handled.

Daniel continued.

"You were the person who provided the majority of the down payment.""

I shook my head.

"Ryan provided the money.""

"No, Claire. You provided the initial deposit from your inheritance. Ryan's contribution was made through a separate family arrangement, and the ownership documents were structured accordingly.""

I went still.

"My inheritance?""

"Your grandmother's estate. Remember?""

I did.

My grandmother had died two years before I married Ryan.

She had left me a substantial amount of money, which I had used to purchase our first apartment.

When Ryan and I upgraded to the larger house, I had contributed most of the proceeds from that apartment.

But Ryan had always referred to the house as ours.

He had never made me feel as though I owed him anything.

Or so I had thought.

"Daniel," I whispered, "whose name is on the deed?""

"Yours.""

I stopped breathing.

"Mine?""

"Yes. Sole legal ownership.""

I looked toward the living room.

The photographs on the wall showed Ryan and me standing outside that house on moving day.

He had lifted me into his arms, laughing.

"We finally have our dream home," he had said.

I remembered kissing him.

I remembered believing that we were building something together.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I did. You signed the documents after we reviewed them. Ryan was present during the meeting.""

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

I had been pregnant with Lily and Grace at the time.

The paperwork had been complicated, and Ryan had insisted on explaining everything.

He had told me that Daniel was simply protecting us from unnecessary complications.

I had trusted him.

"Can he take the house?"" I asked.

"No. Not based on what you've told me. But don't assume he won't try.""

I glanced at the separation agreement.

"There's something else. His mother wants me to leave the house and give Ryan primary residential authority over the twins.""

Daniel's voice became firm.

"Do not sign it. Not one page. And don't leave the property simply because someone tells you to.""

"Can I legally stay?""

"We need to review everything, including the children's documents, your financial arrangements, and the property records. But based on the ownership information I have, you should not be accepting their version of events.""

I swallowed.

"Daniel, I think my husband has been planning this.""

"Then we need to find out how long.""

The next morning, I took the twins to the pediatrician.

I had less than two hundred dollars in my personal account.

The receptionist asked for payment before the appointment.

I handed over my card.

It was declined.

I tried again.

Declined.

The receptionist glanced at me.

"Would you like to try another method?""

My cheeks burned.

"One moment, please.""

I checked my banking application.

Ryan had restricted another account overnight.

I called my sister, Emily.

She answered on the second ring.

"Claire? What's wrong?""

I tried to speak casually.

"Could you lend me some money? Just until I sort something out.""

There was a pause.

"What's happening?""

I looked at Lily, who was sleeping in her carrier.

"Ryan froze the cards.""

"What?""

"He came home yesterday with another woman.""

Emily went silent.

Then she said something I had never heard her say before.

"I'm coming over.""

"Emily, don't. I just need—"

"I'm coming.""

She arrived twenty minutes later with a diaper bag, two coffees, and an expression that could have frightened a police officer.

She paid for the appointment.

Then she followed me outside.

"Tell me everything.""

I did.

The port.

Vanessa.

Richard.

Margaret.

The frozen accounts.

The separation agreement.

When I finished, Emily stood beside the car with her arms crossed.

"That family has lost its mind.""

I let out a tired breath.

"Maybe I should have seen it coming.""

"No.""

She pointed at me.

"Don't do that.""

"Do what?""

"Take responsibility for the choices they made. You didn't force Ryan to cheat. You didn't force his mother to bring you legal papers. And you certainly didn't force him to freeze the money you need to feed his children.""

I looked down.

Emily softened.

"Claire, you need to stop protecting him.""

I didn't answer.

Because she was right.

For years, I had defended Ryan.

When he missed birthdays, I made excuses.

When he forgot anniversaries, I blamed his work.

When Richard insulted me, I told myself that older people sometimes struggled to express affection.

I had spent so much time making everyone comfortable that I had forgotten what it felt like to be respected.

Emily squeezed my shoulder.

"What's the next step?""

"Daniel wants to review the documents.""

"Then let's get them.""

That afternoon, I returned home and found Ryan sitting in the living room.

Vanessa was beside him.

She had removed her beige coat and was wearing a fitted black outfit.

A glass of sparkling water rested on the coffee table.

Ryan looked up from his phone.

"Where have you been?""

"Taking the girls to their appointment.""

He glanced at the diaper bag.

"Couldn't someone else do that?""

I stared at him.

"They're your daughters, Ryan.""

He rolled his eyes.

"Don't start.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Hi, Claire.""

I didn't respond.

Ryan stood.

"We need to discuss something.""

"Fine.""

He gestured toward the dining table.

"Sit down.""

I remained standing.

"What is it?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

She placed her glass down and opened a folder.

"Your living arrangements," Ryan said.

I looked at the folder.

"Margaret already brought me an agreement.""

"Good. Then you know what's expected.""

"Expected by whom?""

He frowned.

"Claire, don't make this difficult.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why are you here?""

She smiled.

"Because Ryan asked me to help him organize things.""

"You're helping my husband organize his divorce while sitting in my house?""

Her smile disappeared briefly.

Then Ryan stepped forward.

"Watch your tone.""

I looked at him.

"Why? Does she have a problem hearing the truth?""

Ryan slammed his palm against the table.

"Enough!""

Lily startled in my arms.

I immediately rocked her.

Ryan glanced at the baby, then lowered his voice.

"You've become impossible to deal with.""

I almost smiled.

"Interesting. I was apparently perfectly tolerable when I was alone at home caring for your newborn daughters.""

He ignored that.

"I've spoken with my father. We're prepared to give you a reasonable settlement.""

"How generous.""

"You'll have enough money to get an apartment.""

"How much?""

He named an amount.

I stared at him.

"That's supposed to cover six years of marriage, two children, and leaving the family home?""

"It's more than fair.""

"Who decided that?""

"My father.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was scrolling through her phone.

Then she said, without looking up, "Honestly, Claire, you should accept it. Ryan doesn't owe you a lifetime of financial support.""

I turned toward her.

"And what exactly do you think you know about my marriage?""

She shrugged.

"Enough.""

Ryan reached for the folder.

"Just sign the agreement.""

I opened it.

The first page was the same document Margaret had brought.

The second page contained a financial settlement.

The third page included a statement confirming that I would relinquish all claims to the Harbor Ridge property.

My heart began beating faster.

I looked up.

"Why does this say I'm transferring ownership of the house?""

Ryan's expression changed.

"Because it's the marital residence.""

"It's registered in my name.""

He laughed.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"I'm not.""

He leaned forward.

"My father paid for that house.""

"Daniel says otherwise.""

The room became completely still.

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"What did you say?""

I held his gaze.

"I spoke to my attorney.""

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"Why would you do that?""

"Because your mother brought me a legal agreement demanding that I leave my own home.""

He grabbed the papers.

"You're misunderstanding the arrangement.""

"Then explain it.""

He didn't.

Instead, he turned toward Vanessa.

"Could you give us a minute?""

She stood reluctantly.

"Sure, darling.""

She walked toward the hallway.

Ryan waited until she was out of earshot.

Then his voice dropped.

"Claire, listen. You're making this much bigger than it needs to be.""

"You're asking me to sign away my house.""

"I'm asking you to cooperate.""

"Why?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Because things have changed.""

"Since when?""

He looked at me.

Then he said something that made my stomach turn.

"Since I realized I didn't want to spend the rest of my life pretending to love you.""

I stared at him.

The words were cruel.

But strangely, they didn't hurt as much as I expected.

Perhaps because I had already begun grieving the man I thought he was.

"Then why are you trying to take my house?""

He looked away.

"Because my father needs it.""

I blinked.

"What?""

Ryan straightened.

"There's a business matter. The property would be useful as collateral.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"You're trying to use my house to secure your father's business debt?""

"Don't exaggerate.""

"Is that why you want me to sign?""

He snatched the folder.

"Forget it.""

He walked toward the hallway.

I followed him with my eyes.

At the doorway, he stopped.

"One more thing. My father is coming tomorrow. He expects you to cooperate.""

I looked at him.

"And if I don't?""

Ryan smiled without warmth.

"Then you'll find out how expensive a divorce can become.""

He left with Vanessa.

The front door slammed.

I stood there for several seconds.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel appeared.

*Daniel:* Claire, I have reviewed the document you sent. There's a serious issue. The agreement appears to be based on a property transfer that was never authorized.

A second message followed.

*Daniel:* I also checked the public corporate filings. Richard's company has substantial outstanding obligations.

Then came the third.

*Daniel:* Your house may be the reason they are suddenly so desperate to get you out.

That evening, I sat at the dining table with the twins asleep upstairs.

I opened the family photographs on my phone.

There was Ryan holding my hand in front of our first apartment.

Ryan kissing my pregnant belly.

Ryan standing beside the hospital bed after one of his rare video calls, smiling at the two tiny babies on the screen.

I had saved every photograph.

I had even printed some for the nursery.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

At 10:13 p.m., someone sent me an email.

The sender was an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT RYAN DID BEFORE HE RETURNED HOME.*

I opened it.

There was one photograph attached.

Ryan stood outside a luxury hotel with Vanessa.

But that wasn't what made my hands go cold.

In the background stood Richard.

And beside him was a man I recognized from our wedding photographs.

Ryan's uncle.

Beneath the photograph was a short message.

Your husband didn't come home to start a new life. He came home to take something that belongs to you.

Then another line appeared.

And if you want proof, check the date on the hotel receipt.

I opened the attachment.

The receipt was dated six weeks earlier.

Ryan had booked a suite for two.

May you like

And the name on the reservation wasn't Vanessa's.

It was mine.
