Amused

Chapter 6: The Money That Disappeared While I Was Giving Birth

I couldn't stop looking at the authorization form.

My name.

My personal information.

A signature that looked like mine.

And a transaction I had never approved.

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything Daniel was saying.

Then I forced myself to speak.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Daniel checked the document.

"The authorization concerns approximately eighty-six thousand dollars.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

Eighty-six thousand.

That was almost everything left from my grandmother's inheritance after we purchased the house.

It was money I had deliberately kept separate.

My grandmother had worked as a nurse for more than thirty years. She had saved carefully, lived modestly, and left me something she wanted me to use to build a secure future.

I had promised her I would.

And now someone had apparently used my signature to move it.

"Where did the money go?""

"We're checking.""

"Can the bank reverse it?""

"That depends on the transaction history and the circumstances. We need to notify the bank immediately and formally dispute any unauthorized instruction.""

I stood up.

"Then let's go.""

Daniel gathered the documents.

"Claire, take a breath.""

"I can't.""

"I understand.""

"No, Daniel. You don't understand. I gave birth three months ago.

I was in a hospital bed when this happened. I couldn't even lift my daughters without help. And Ryan was apparently signing my name while I was recovering.""

Daniel's expression softened.

"We're going to investigate it.""

I looked down at the authorization.

Then I noticed something.

The signature date was three days after Grace and Lily were born.

I remembered that day.

I had been sleeping in short intervals.

The nurses had been checking my blood pressure.

My sister had brought me a sandwich because I had forgotten to eat.

Ryan had called once.

He said he was arranging some paperwork for the girls.

I had thanked him.

I had actually thanked him.

At the bank, Daniel helped me file a formal dispute.

The representative reviewed the account information and requested additional verification.

After nearly an hour, she returned.

"Mrs. Bennett, I can confirm that a transfer was initiated from your inheritance account.""

"Where did it go?""

She looked at the screen.

"The funds were transferred into an account associated with Bennett Maritime Holdings.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Who authorized it?""

"The instruction was submitted under your name.""

"But I didn't authorize it.""

The representative looked at Daniel.

He explained that the signature was disputed and that we were requesting the underlying transaction records.

She nodded.

"I'll escalate this to our fraud investigation department.""

I sat back.

The money had gone to Richard's company.

The same company that was trying to use my house as collateral.

Daniel asked another question.

"Was the transfer followed by any additional movement of funds?""

The representative checked.

"Yes. A portion was transferred to another account the following day.""

"Whose account?""

She hesitated.

"I can't provide that information without completing the relevant verification process.""

Daniel handed over the necessary documents.

"We'll submit a formal request.""

The representative printed a transaction reference.

I held the paper.

The numbers seemed meaningless.

But one thing was clear.

My money was gone.

On the drive home, I called Emily.

She answered while feeding one of the twins.

"Hey. How did the meeting go?""

I tried to speak normally.

"Not good.""

"What happened?""

"Ryan transferred eighty-six thousand dollars from my inheritance account.""

Silence.

Then Emily said, "I'm sorry. What?""

I explained everything.

When I finished, she didn't speak for several seconds.

Then she asked, "Are you sitting down?""

"Yes.""

"Good. Because I'm going to say something, and I need you to listen.""

"Okay.""

"Your husband is not just cheating. He's been financially exploiting you.""

The word sounded harsh.

But it was accurate.

Emily continued.

"Do you remember when he told us he had arranged the girls' hospital expenses?""

"Yes.""

"He said everything was covered.""

"I know.""

"Then why were you paying for their medication with your own savings?""

I closed my eyes.

Because I had been too embarrassed to admit that Ryan wasn't sending enough money.

Because I had believed he would eventually make things right.

Because I had kept telling myself that he was working hard.

"I don't know," I whispered.

Emily softened.

"Come here tonight. Bring the girls. You don't have to stay in that house alone.""

I looked toward the road.

"No. I need to stay here.""

"Claire...""

"Daniel says we shouldn't leave without understanding the property situation.""

"Fine. But I'm staying with you.""

"Emily, you have your own family.""

"And you're mine.""

I swallowed.

"Thank you.""

That afternoon, Ryan arrived.

He didn't knock.

He used his key.

I was in the kitchen warming a bottle when I heard the front door open.

"Claire?""

I turned.

He walked into the room wearing a navy polo shirt and an expensive watch.

He looked as though he had come from a business meeting.

Not as though he had just returned from a seven-month absence during which his wife had given birth to twins.

"What are you doing here?"" I asked.

He frowned.

"This is my home.""

I placed the bottle on the counter.

"Not according to the deed.""

He ignored me.

"We need to talk.""

"I've already spoken to Daniel.""

His expression changed.

"Of course you have.""

He walked toward the refrigerator and opened it.

"Is there anything to eat?""

I stared at him.

"Are you serious?""

He looked over his shoulder.

"What?""

"You walk in here after everything you've done and ask me what's for dinner?""

He closed the refrigerator.

"Claire, I'm not here to argue.""

"Then leave.""

He took a breath.

"Listen. I know things have gotten out of hand.""

I folded my arms.

"Things?""

"Vanessa. My father. The money.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"So you know about the money.""

He looked away.

"Yes.""

"Did you transfer it?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"That money was needed.""

"Did you transfer it?""

"Claire, the business was in trouble.""

"Answer me.""

He finally looked at me.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"Without my permission?""

He remained silent.

I stepped closer.

"You used my signature?""

"I was going to explain everything.""

"When?""

"After the refinancing.""

"After you took my house too?""

His face hardened.

"That's not what was happening.""

"Then what was happening?""

He lowered his voice.

"My father was facing a serious financial problem. If the company collapsed, hundreds of people could lose their jobs.""

I laughed bitterly.

"So you decided to steal from your wife?""

"I didn't steal anything.""

"You transferred eighty-six thousand dollars from my inheritance without asking me.""

"It was temporary.""

"Where is it?""

He looked toward the window.

"Most of it went to the company.""

"And the rest?""

"Operational expenses.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

He didn't answer.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Did you use any of it for Vanessa?""

His jaw tightened.

"Why are you bringing her into this?""

"Because I saw the hotel reservation.""

He looked at me.

"Claire—"

"Did you?""

He finally admitted it.

"Some money went toward accommodation and travel.""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"You used my grandmother's inheritance to pay for hotels with another woman?""

"That's not how it happened.""

"Then tell me how it happened!""

He raised his voice.

"I was under pressure!""

Lily began crying upstairs.

I immediately turned toward the staircase.

Ryan barely glanced in that direction.

"See? This is exactly what I mean. Every conversation becomes about the babies.""

I turned back.

"They are babies, Ryan. They need their parents.""

He shook his head.

"You don't understand what I've been dealing with.""

I stared at him.

"Then help me understand.""

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Claire, are you with Ryan right now?""

"Yes.""

"Put him on speaker.""

Ryan frowned.

"What's this about?""

I activated the speaker.

Daniel's voice filled the kitchen.

"Mr. Bennett, we've received additional information from the bank.""

Ryan went completely still.

"What information?""

"The funds transferred from Claire's inheritance account were not deposited entirely into Bennett Maritime Holdings.""

I looked at Ryan.

Daniel continued.

"A portion was transferred into an account connected to an individual named Vanessa Cole.""

Ryan's face changed.

I stared at him.

"Why did you send her my money?""

He looked toward the phone.

"That's not accurate.""

Daniel continued.

"We have requested the transaction records. The bank has also flagged the disputed authorization.""

Ryan's voice became sharp.

"Daniel, you have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then you should have no difficulty providing evidence that Claire authorized the transaction.""

Ryan didn't answer.

Daniel added, "We'll be contacting you through the appropriate legal channels.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, Ryan stood motionless.

Then he turned toward me.

"Did Vanessa tell you that?""

"No.""

"She's lying.""

"Then explain the bank records.""

He looked away.

I shook my head.

"How much did you give her?""

"Claire, stop.""

"How much?""

He slammed his hand against the counter.

"Enough!""

The bottle toppled over.

Milk spilled across the countertop.

I flinched.

Ryan stared at me.

Then he took a breath and tried to regain control.

"Look. I can fix this.""

I picked up a towel.

"You've had months to fix it.""

"I'll repay the money.""

"With what?""

He hesitated.

I laughed without humor.

"Your father needs my house to secure his company. You froze my accounts. You took my inheritance. And now you're promising to repay me with money you don't have.""

Ryan's expression turned cold.

"You think you're clever because Daniel is helping you?""

"No. I think I was foolish because I trusted you.""

He stepped closer.

"You have no idea what happens if my father's company collapses.""

I looked him directly in the eyes.

"That's not my responsibility.""

His face darkened.

"It will be.""

He picked up his keys.

Before leaving, he turned around.

"One more thing. You should be careful about what you tell the bank. There are things about your inheritance that you don't know.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

He opened the door.

Then he said something that made me freeze.

"Your grandmother's money wasn't the only inheritance involved in that account.""

And he walked out.

That evening, I sat with Daniel in my living room.

I told him exactly what Ryan had said.

He became unusually quiet.

"Did he explain what he meant?""

"No.""

Daniel opened his laptop.

"Claire, do you still have the original estate documents from your grandmother?""

"Yes. They're in the bedroom safe.""

"Can you bring them?""

I went upstairs.

The safe was behind a framed photograph in the closet.

I entered the code and removed the folder.

Inside were copies of my grandmother's will, the probate documents, and several bank statements.

I handed them to Daniel.

He reviewed the paperwork carefully.

Then he stopped at one page.

"Claire, did your grandmother ever tell you about a trust?""

I frowned.

"A trust?""

"Yes. A separate arrangement established before her death.""

I shook my head.

"She told me she had left me money.""

Daniel read another paragraph.

"According to this document, the inheritance was distributed in two parts.""

I leaned forward.

"What do you mean?""

"The first part was paid directly to you. The second was held in a family trust until certain conditions were met.""

I stared at him.

"How much was in the trust?""

He checked the document.

Then he looked up.

"Claire, the amount listed here is significantly larger than the money you received.""

My mouth went dry.

"How much larger?""

Daniel turned the document toward me.

I read the figure.

Then I read it again.

I couldn't believe it.

My grandmother had left me a second inheritance.

One that I had never known existed.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Daniel examined the trustee information.

"Because the trust was administered separately. It appears the trustee was responsible for notifying you when the conditions were met.""

"Who was the trustee?""

He pointed to the name.

I stared at it.

Richard Bennett.

My father-in-law.

For several seconds, the room seemed to disappear.

Richard had been managing my grandmother's trust?

That was impossible.

My grandmother had never mentioned him.

Daniel began reading the appointment documents.

Then his expression changed.

"Claire, this is serious.""

"What?""

He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"Your grandmother did not appoint Richard personally. She appointed a financial institution, with Richard listed as a temporary family representative for administrative communication.""

I swallowed.

"What does that mean?""

"It means he may have had access to certain information, but he was not the owner of the trust.""

I looked at the page.

"Could he take the money?""

"Not lawfully.""

Daniel turned another page.

Then he stopped.

There was a handwritten note attached to the back of the document.

It was in my grandmother's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

The letters were slightly uneven, just as they had been on the birthday cards she used to send me.

Daniel carefully unfolded it.

The note was addressed to me.

My darling Claire, if you're reading this, something may have happened to the arrangements I made for your future.

My eyes filled with tears.

I kept reading.

I chose someone to help protect what I left you. But if that person ever tells you that the money belongs to your husband's family, please do not believe him.

I looked up.

Daniel was reading the next line.

Then he went completely still.

"What?"" I whispered.

He turned the page toward me.

My grandmother had written one final sentence.

The person who knows the full truth is the woman who raised your husband.

I stared at the words.

Ryan's mother.

Margaret.

The woman who had brought me the separation agreement.

The woman who had told me to accept her son's affair.

The woman who had insisted I leave my own home.

I looked at Daniel.

"She knows?""

He closed the folder slowly.

"I believe we need to speak with her.""

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Margaret.

I stared at her name.

Then I answered.

Her voice sounded nothing like the confident woman who had stood in my kitchen days earlier.

"Claire, I need to see you.""

I said nothing.

She continued, almost whispering.

"Please. It's about your grandmother's trust.""

I gripped the phone.

"What about it?""

A shaky breath came through the speaker.

"Richard has been lying to everyone. And if he discovers that you've found those documents, he may destroy the only evidence that can save you.""

I stood up.

"Margaret, what are you talking about?""

Her answer made my blood run cold.

"Your grandmother didn't trust Richard. She knew exactly what kind of man he was.""

A pause.

Then she added:

"And Claire, there's a reason Richard was so desperate to marry Vanessa.""

I looked at Daniel.

May you like

Margaret's voice dropped even lower.

"Vanessa isn't the first woman he's used to get control of someone else's money.""
