Amused

Chapter 8: The Original Documents Were Hidden in My Husband's Office

Daniel read the line again.

"Richard Bennett witnessed the original agreement.""

I stared at the notebook.

"Why would my grandmother trust him with those documents?""

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

"Because Richard was a different man back then. At least, that's what she believed.""

Daniel shook his head.

"We need to establish exactly what the certificates refer to.""

He reviewed the trust documents and found a reference to an additional asset.

It wasn't another bank account.

It wasn't a property.

It was an ownership interest in a shipping company.

A company called Pacific Meridian Shipping.

I frowned.

"I've never heard of it.""

Margaret looked up.

"Your grandmother invested in that company decades ago.""

"How much?""

Daniel checked the records.

"According to this document, she held a significant minority interest.""

"Does it still exist?""

He nodded.

"It merged with another shipping group several years ago. The ownership interest may have been converted into shares in the successor company.""

I stared at him.

"How much would those shares be worth?""

"Potentially a substantial amount. We need current records to determine that.""

Margaret began trembling.

"Richard knows about those shares.""

Daniel looked at her.

"How?""

"Because he was involved in the early business arrangements. He helped your grandmother review the original investment.""

I sat back.

So that was what Richard wanted.

My inheritance.

My house.

And potentially the shares my grandmother had left behind.

For years, he had acted like the head of a wealthy family.

But perhaps he had been trying to reclaim something he had never owned.

"Where are the original certificates?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at the notebook.

"Your grandmother believed Richard was holding them.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Then they're probably in his office.""

I stared at her.

"Have you ever seen them?""

"Once.""

"When?""

"Several years ago. Richard kept a locked cabinet behind his desk. I saw a folder with your grandmother's name on it.""

I stood.

"Then we need to get those documents.""

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"Not without legal authority. We cannot enter his office and take anything.""

I understood.

But the thought of Richard sitting on documents that belonged to my daughters made my skin crawl.

"What can we do?""

Daniel picked up his phone.

"We can formally request their production through the relevant legal process. We can also notify the company that ownership is disputed and ask them to preserve their records.""

He made several calls.

By the afternoon, formal notices had been prepared.

But Richard didn't wait.

At 6:30 p.m., I received a message from Margaret.

*Margaret:* Richard knows I gave you the key. He has been asking where I am.

I called her.

She answered in a whisper.

"Claire, he's furious.""

"Are you safe?""

"I'm at my sister's.""

"Stay there.""

"I don't think you understand. He has been looking for something.""

"What?""

"The original certificates.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why now?""

"Because he knows you've found the trust documents. He's afraid you'll discover what he did with the shares.""

"What did he do?""

Margaret was silent.

Then she said, "I think he used them.""

My stomach tightened.

"Used them how?""

"As collateral.""

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

"What's happened?""

I explained.

He became quiet.

Then he said, "Claire, I need you to send me Margaret's message. I'll check the corporate records.""

Before I could answer, someone knocked at my front door.

Three hard knocks.

I looked toward the hallway.

"Daniel, someone is here.""

"Don't open it until you know who it is.""

I checked the security camera.

Ryan stood outside.

He was alone.

I opened the door but kept the chain attached.

"What do you want?""

He looked exhausted.

"Can I come in?""

"No.""

"Claire, please.""

"Talk.""

He glanced toward the street.

"Dad has lost control.""

I stared at him.

"That sounds like his problem.""

"It's becoming everyone's problem.""

"What does he want?""

Ryan rubbed his face.

"The original certificates.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Why?""

"Because he used them to secure a loan.""

I gripped the door.

"Without permission?""

He nodded.

"Years ago, he convinced everyone the paperwork was temporary.""

"Who is everyone?""

"Some investors. A lender. People connected to the company.""

"And my grandmother?""

"She didn't know.""

I stared at him.

"Then how did he get the certificates?""

Ryan looked away.

"She gave them to him for safekeeping.""

I felt sick.

"So he stole them.""

"He says he was protecting the investment.""

"Ryan, your father has been trying to take my house, my inheritance, and my children's future.""

"I know.""

I stared at him.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely ashamed.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

He looked directly at me.

"Because Dad is planning to blame me.""

I almost laughed.

"How convenient.""

"I'm serious.""

"Why should I believe you?""

Ryan swallowed.

"Because I have copies of the original loan documents.""

I froze.

"Where?""

"In my office.""

"Your office?""

He nodded.

"At the shipping company.""

I stared at him.

"Why would you keep them?""

"Because I knew Dad might eventually need someone to take responsibility.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You knew?""

"I suspected.""

"How long?""

He didn't answer.

I closed my eyes.

"Ryan, you knew your father was using my grandmother's assets.""

"I didn't know everything.""

"But you knew enough to help him.""

He lowered his head.

"Yes.""

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I want to give you the documents.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because I don't want to go to prison for something Dad did.""

There it was.

Not remorse.

Not love.

Fear.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"Contact Daniel.""

Ryan nodded.

Then he looked past me toward the staircase.

"How are the girls?""

I didn't answer.

He looked down.

"Can I see them?""

"No.""

His face tightened.

"Claire, they're my daughters.""

"Then start acting like their father.""

I closed the door.

The next morning, Daniel and I met Ryan at a neutral location.

He arrived carrying a thick envelope.

He looked nervous.

Daniel asked him to place the documents on the table.

Ryan did.

Inside were loan agreements, company correspondence, and copies of ownership certificates.

Daniel examined the first document.

Then the second.

His expression became increasingly serious.

"Mr. Bennett, where did you obtain these?""

"My father's office.""

"Did he give them to you?""

"No.""

"Then how did you access them?""

Ryan hesitated.

"I copied them before he changed the office locks.""

Daniel continued reading.

One document listed my grandmother as the beneficial owner of the original investment.

Another showed that the shares had been used as security for a business loan.

The signatures on the authorization page were not hers.

I looked at Ryan.

"Did you know about this when you left for sea?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know about it when I was pregnant?""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

My throat tightened.

"And you still let me believe we were building a future together.""

He didn't answer.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

"There's something else here.""

It was a loan agreement between Bennett Maritime Holdings and a private lender.

The amount was enormous.

But what caught my attention was the signature of the guarantor.

Margaret Bennett.

I turned toward Ryan.

"Your mother guaranteed this loan?""

He nodded.

"She was pressured into signing.""

"Did she know the collateral included my grandmother's shares?""

"I don't think so.""

Daniel examined the supporting pages.

"There's an additional condition.""

He read it twice.

Then he looked at Ryan.

"Was your father planning to sell the company?""

Ryan shook his head.

"No. He was trying to restructure it.""

Daniel pointed to a paragraph.

"This agreement gives the lender the right to demand immediate repayment if ownership of the underlying shares is challenged.""

I stared.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning if we formally dispute the use of your grandmother's shares, the lender could demand repayment immediately.""

Ryan looked alarmed.

"That's what Dad is afraid of.""

I stared at him.

"So he needs my house because his company is already in danger.""

Ryan nodded.

"And if the lender discovers the shares were used without proper authority, the entire financing arrangement could collapse.""

I sat back.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Richard wasn't trying to take my house because he wanted a bigger home.

He was desperate.

He had used my grandmother's investment to keep his company alive.

Now he needed my property to cover the growing hole.

And my husband had been helping him.

Daniel gathered the documents.

"We'll need to verify these with the relevant institutions.""

Ryan leaned forward.

"There's one more thing.""

Daniel looked at him.

"What?""

Ryan swallowed.

"My father has another copy of the original trust agreement.""

I frowned.

"Where?""

"In his office. Behind the cabinet.""

"Why does he have it?""

Ryan looked at me.

"Because he changed one of the pages.""

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly lowered his pen.

"What did you say?""

Ryan nodded.

"He replaced the beneficiary schedule.""

I stared at him.

"With whose name?""

Ryan looked away.

Then he whispered:

"His own.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Daniel immediately asked, "Do you have proof?""

Ryan nodded.

"I photographed the original page before he replaced it.""

He opened his phone.

There was a photograph of a document dated years earlier.

The original beneficiary schedule listed me and my future children.

A second photograph showed the altered version.

Richard Bennett.

Sole beneficiary.

I covered my mouth.

He hadn't merely tried to take the money.

He had apparently tried to rewrite the inheritance itself.

Daniel took copies of the photographs.

Then Ryan looked at me.

"Claire, I need you to understand something.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"My father didn't just use the trust to keep his company alive.""

He hesitated.

"He used the shares to purchase something.""

"What?""

Ryan's voice dropped.

"A second shipping company.""

I frowned.

"Which one?""

He looked directly at me.

"Bennett Coastal Logistics.""

I froze.

That was the company Ryan had supposedly joined after leaving his original employer.

The company he had told me was giving him a promotion.

The company that had supposedly required seven months at sea.

I stared at him.

"You told me you were working for a different company.""

Ryan nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who owned it?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel checked the corporate records.

Then he turned the laptop toward me.

The registered controlling shareholder was Richard Bennett.

But the second-largest shareholder was listed as:

*Claire Bennett Family Trust.*

I stared at the screen.

My grandmother's money had helped build the company Ryan claimed was paying his salary.

And I had never been told.

Then Ryan said something that made the entire room go cold.

"Claire, there's a reason I spent seven months at sea.""

I looked at him.

"What reason?""

He swallowed.

"I wasn't working on the ship the whole time.""

He reached into his envelope and removed a final photograph.

It showed him standing outside a private office with Richard and several executives.

The date was from five months earlier.

And behind them was a large sign.

*EXTRAORDINARY SHAREHOLDERS' MEETING — BENNETT COASTAL LOGISTICS.*

Ryan looked at me.

"That meeting was about transferring control of the company.""

I stared at the photograph.

"To whom?""

May you like

He lowered his voice.

"To Vanessa.""
