Amused

Chapter 9: The Meeting That Richard Never Expected Me to Attend

Eleanor Hayes stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she turned around.

"Claire, your grandmother anticipated this exact situation.""

I looked at the documents on her desk.

"What did she put in the trust?""

Eleanor opened the folder again.

"Your grandmother knew Richard would eventually attempt to take control of the shares. So she created a protective mechanism that would activate if anyone tried to transfer them without the beneficiary's consent.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Can you explain the mechanism?""

Eleanor placed a document in front of him.

"The trust contains a controlling-vote provision. If the shares are transferred without proper authorization, the transfer can be challenged, and the voting rights remain suspended until the dispute is resolved.""

I stared at her.

"So Vanessa doesn't actually control the shares?""

"Not legally, assuming the transfer was unauthorized.""

"Then why is Richard calling a meeting?""

"Because he believes the registration is enough to give him control.""

Daniel examined the clause.

"This is stronger than I expected.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your grandmother was very careful.""

I looked at the clock.

Thirty-two minutes remained before the meeting.

"What can we do?""

Eleanor closed the folder.

"We attend.""

The headquarters of Bennett Coastal Logistics occupied three floors of a modern glass building near the harbor.

I had visited the building once before.

Ryan had brought me there shortly after our wedding, proudly showing me his office.

He had told me that one day he would become a senior executive.

I had kissed him and told him I believed in him.

Now I was walking through the same lobby with Daniel and Eleanor, carrying the documents that could dismantle everything his father had built.

The receptionist looked up.

"Good morning. Can I help you?""

Daniel presented his identification.

"We're here for the extraordinary shareholders' meeting.""

The receptionist checked the schedule.

"I'm sorry, the meeting is already underway.""

"Then please inform the chairperson that the trustee has arrived.""

The receptionist looked at Eleanor.

Her expression changed.

"Mrs. Hayes?""

Eleanor nodded.

The receptionist immediately picked up the phone.

A moment later, she gestured toward the elevators.

"Please come with me.""

We entered the boardroom.

There were twelve people seated around a long polished table.

Richard stood at the head.

Vanessa sat beside him, wearing a tailored cream suit.

Ryan was seated near the window.

When he saw me, his face went pale.

Richard stopped speaking.

"What is she doing here?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Claire Bennett is a beneficiary of the trust whose shares are the subject of today's meeting.""

Richard laughed.

"This is a private corporate matter.""

Eleanor walked into the room.

"Not when you are discussing assets administered by my office.""

Richard's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely unsettled.

"Mrs. Hayes.""

She placed her handbag on the table.

"Richard.""

Vanessa looked between them.

"Who is she?""

Richard ignored her.

"You're not supposed to be here.""

Eleanor raised an eyebrow.

"Neither are you, apparently, given the circumstances under which these shares were transferred.""

One of the directors cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should establish everyone's authority before continuing.""

Daniel nodded.

"Agreed.""

He distributed copies of the trust documentation.

Richard immediately objected.

"Those documents are outdated.""

Eleanor looked at him.

"They are the original instruments, properly executed and maintained.""

Richard pointed toward Vanessa.

"The shares have already been transferred.""

Eleanor opened another folder.

"Not with my authorization.""

The room became quiet.

Vanessa leaned toward Richard.

"What is she talking about?""

He whispered something to her.

She shook her head.

"No. You told me everything was completed.""

Richard straightened.

"Vanessa, please.""

I watched them.

The same man who had laughed at me in the port was now struggling to maintain control of a room full of executives.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only determination.

Daniel addressed the board.

"We have reason to believe the transfer was based on a disputed authorization bearing Claire Bennett's signature. We have formally notified the relevant parties that the signature is not admitted as genuine.""

One director examined the documents.

"Has the trustee confirmed this?""

Eleanor spoke.

"Yes. I have never authorized the transfer.""

Richard slammed his palm on the table.

"This is absurd!""

Eleanor looked at him calmly.

"Then you should have no difficulty explaining why your company submitted documents claiming otherwise.""

Richard's face turned red.

He pointed at me.

"She's doing this because she's angry about my son's marriage.""

I stared at him.

"Your son's marriage?""

He continued.

"She wants revenge. She's trying to destroy the company because Ryan has moved on.""

I looked around the room.

Then I spoke.

"I'm not here because my husband cheated on me. I'm here because my grandmother's inheritance was used without authorization, my personal signature was allegedly forged, and my property was targeted as collateral for a company debt.""

The room went silent.

I continued.

"My daughters are also beneficiaries of the trust. I will not allow anyone to take what my grandmother left them.""

Richard laughed.

"Your daughters? They have no understanding of business.""

Eleanor's voice cut through the room.

"They don't need to understand business. They need adults to stop stealing from them.""

One of the directors looked down at the documents.

"Mr. Bennett, can you explain the original loan authorization?""

Richard's expression changed.

"What loan authorization?""

Daniel placed a copy on the table.

"The agreement in which the family trust's shares were used as collateral.""

Richard looked at Ryan.

Ryan stared at the table.

The director read the document.

Then he looked up.

"Mr. Bennett, did the trust authorize this?""

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"The company was operating under a family arrangement.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"There was no family arrangement granting you that authority.""

Richard turned toward her.

"You're interfering in a matter you don't understand.""

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"I helped draft the original protective provisions, Richard. I understand them rather well.""

The meeting continued for another twenty minutes.

Daniel presented the relevant documents.

Eleanor explained the trust's controlling-vote provision.

The board eventually agreed to suspend the proposed ownership confirmation pending independent verification.

Vanessa looked increasingly distressed.

She leaned toward Richard.

"You said the shares were mine.""

Richard whispered something.

She shook her head.

"Don't tell me that now.""

I watched her.

For months, she had treated me as though I were an obstacle standing between her and a better life.

Now she was discovering that Richard had never intended to give her what he promised.

A director addressed Vanessa.

"Ms. Cole, do you have any documentation confirming that you personally paid consideration for these shares?""

She hesitated.

"Richard arranged the transfer.""

"Did you pay for them?""

"No.""

"Did the trust authorize the transfer?""

She looked toward Richard.

He didn't answer.

The director nodded slowly.

"Then your position as proposed controlling shareholder is not established.""

Vanessa stood.

"This is ridiculous. I have worked on this company for months.""

Richard snapped.

"Sit down.""

She turned toward him.

"Don't speak to me like that.""

He glared.

"You wouldn't have anything without me.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"That's what you told your wife too, isn't it?""

The room went silent.

Richard's face darkened.

He stepped toward her.

"Careful.""

She pulled a phone from her handbag.

"I have every message. Every promise. Every payment.""

Richard froze.

I stared at her.

"Vanessa, what are you doing?""

She looked at me.

"I'm done protecting him.""

She turned toward the board.

"Richard told me the shares had already been transferred. He promised me control of the company after the meeting. He also promised to pay me a settlement.""

Daniel immediately asked, "Do you have written evidence?""

Vanessa nodded.

She placed printed messages on the table.

Some were between her and Richard.

Others were between her and Ryan.

I saw one dated two weeks before my husband's return.

*Richard:* Once Claire is out of the house, we can complete the financing.

*Vanessa:* What if she refuses?

*Richard:* Ryan will handle her.

Another message:

*Vanessa:* And the children?

*Richard:* They'll go with her. They don't affect the transaction.

I felt my hands tighten.

The director reading the messages looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Then Vanessa placed another document on the table.

It was a payment schedule.

Richard had promised her a substantial amount after the share transfer.

But there was something else.

A second payment was listed under Ryan's name.

I looked at my husband.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Daniel noticed it too.

"Mr. Bennett, what is this payment?""

Ryan swallowed.

"I don't know.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Of course you don't.""

She pointed at the document.

"That's the payment Richard promised you for helping secure Claire's signature.""

I stared at Ryan.

He shook his head.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

"Would you like me to play the recording?""

Richard suddenly stood.

"Enough!""

His voice echoed through the room.

"You're all forgetting who built this company.""

Eleanor looked at him.

"And you're forgetting who owns the shares.""

Richard turned toward me.

"You think you've won?""

I said nothing.

He stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you're doing. If this company collapses, people will lose their jobs. Families will suffer. You'll have that on your conscience.""

I met his eyes.

"Then perhaps you should have thought about those families before using their company to steal from mine.""

He clenched his jaw.

"You owe me.""

"No.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"My grandmother owed you nothing. I owe you nothing. And my daughters owe you nothing.""

Richard turned toward the board.

"She's being manipulated.""

One director raised his hand.

"Mr. Bennett, please sit down.""

Richard refused.

"I am the founder of this company.""

The director looked at him.

"And we are now considering whether you should remain in your position.""

For the first time, Richard had nothing to say.

The board suspended the proposed share transfer.

They also agreed to an independent review of the company's financial records and the disputed loan arrangements.

Daniel requested that all relevant documents be preserved.

Eleanor formally confirmed that the trust had not authorized the transfer.

Vanessa left the room without speaking to anyone.

Ryan remained seated.

I was gathering my papers when he approached me.

"Claire.""

I didn't look up.

"Not now.""

"Please.""

I finally faced him.

"What?""

He looked exhausted.

"I know I don't deserve this, but I want you to know I never wanted the girls to lose their inheritance.""

I stared at him.

"You signed documents transferring their shares.""

"I was trying to keep Dad happy.""

"And you thought that was more important than your daughters?""

He lowered his head.

I continued.

"You stood at the port and told me you were too attractive to be faithful. Do you remember?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

"You watched another woman insult me while I held our newborn babies.""

"I know.""

"You froze my money.""

"I know.""

"You helped your father use my inheritance.""

"I know.""

I stepped closer.

"Then stop telling me what you know and start accepting what you've done.""

He looked at me.

"Can I see the girls?""

I took a breath.

"Any contact with them will be arranged through the appropriate process. You don't get to use them as a reason to avoid accountability.""

His eyes filled.

I turned away.

Outside the building, Eleanor placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Your grandmother would be proud.""

I looked at her.

"I wish she were here.""

"So do I.""

Daniel received a call.

He listened for a moment, then his expression changed.

"What happened?"" I asked.

He ended the call.

"The bank has confirmed that the disputed transfer from your inheritance account was followed by additional payments.""

"To Vanessa?""

"Some. But there were other recipients.""

"Who?""

He looked at the report.

Then he turned it toward me.

Three payments had been made.

One to Vanessa.

One to a private consulting company.

And one to an account registered under Ryan's name.

I stared.

"How much did he receive?""

Daniel gave me the amount.

My husband had received a substantial personal payment from the money taken out of my inheritance.

I felt my chest tighten.

Then Daniel pointed to the final entry.

"There's another issue.""

"What?""

"The account that received the largest payment belongs to a company we haven't identified yet.""

I read the name.

*Bennett Family Asset Management.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Who owns it?""

He checked the corporate records.

Then his face went pale.

"Richard Bennett.""

I shook my head.

"That can't be right. We already know he transferred money through the company.""

Daniel looked at me.

"This is a separate entity.""

He turned the laptop around.

The registered director was not Richard.

It was someone else.

Someone who had supposedly been helping me.

I stared at the screen.

*Margaret Bennett.*

My mother-in-law.

The woman who had given me my grandmother's letter.

The woman who had claimed to be afraid of Richard.

The woman who had warned me about his plans.

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

Daniel spoke carefully.

"Claire, we need to understand why Margaret's name is attached to this account.""

My phone rang.

It was Margaret.

I answered.

"Why is your name on a company account that received my money?""

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

"Because Richard forced me to help him.""

I closed my eyes.

"Tell me the truth, Margaret.""

Her voice broke.

"I haven't told you everything.""

"What else?""

She began crying.

Then she said:

"Your grandmother didn't leave you the trust alone. She left something else to me.""

I froze.

"What?""

"A document that could prove Richard has been stealing from the family for more than twenty years.""

"Where is it?""

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"At the house.""

"Which house?""

"Richard's house. Hidden in the wall behind his office.""

I stared at Daniel.

Margaret continued.

"But Claire, you need to hurry.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard knows I've spoken to you.""

A pause.

Then she whispered:

May you like

"He's already looking for it.""

And before I could ask another question, the call ended.
