Chapter 4: The Woman Who Married My Father-in-Law
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I stared at the marriage certificate Daniel had placed on the table.
Vanessa Cole.
Richard Bennett.
The wedding date was less than a year earlier.
I looked up slowly.
"You're married to Richard?""
Vanessa's face had turned crimson.
Ryan stood frozen beside his father, his mouth slightly open.
Richard snatched the document from the table.
"Where did you get this?""
Daniel didn't move.
"That's not important right now.""
"Give it to me.""
"Mr. Bennett, I'd advise you not to touch any more documents.""
Richard's fingers tightened around the paper.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You're my father-in-law's wife?""
She swallowed.
"It's complicated.""
I almost laughed.
"Complicated? You were kissing my husband at the port.""
Ryan stepped between us.
"Claire, this has nothing to do with you.""
I turned toward him.
"Nothing to do with me? Your girlfriend is married to your father, and you've been trying to steal my house with both of them.""
"She's not my girlfriend.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"What?""
Ryan looked irritated.
"Not now.""
She laughed in disbelief.
"Are you seriously denying our relationship?""
Richard stepped forward.
"Both of you, stop talking.""
But Vanessa wasn't listening.
She pointed at Ryan.
"You told me you were going to leave her. You said the marriage was over.""
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"It is over.""
"Then why did you tell me we were going to start a life together?""
I watched them argue.
It was like standing in the middle of a play where everyone had forgotten their lines.
Daniel quietly placed the notebook inside his briefcase.
Richard noticed.
"You're not taking those documents.""
Daniel looked at him.
"They were found on property owned by my client. We are preserving them because they may be relevant to an unauthorized transaction.""
"That's company information.""
"Then you should have stored it in company premises.""
Richard's face darkened.
"You don't know who you're dealing with.""
Daniel closed his briefcase.
"I know exactly who I'm dealing with.""
Ryan stepped closer to me.
"Claire, send him away. We can discuss this as a family.""
I stared at him.
"You stopped being my family when you kissed another woman in front of our daughters.""
His expression hardened.
"Don't use the girls against me.""
"I'm not. I'm asking you to remember that they're your children.""
He looked away.
Richard pointed toward the house.
"Enough. Claire, we need to settle this before it gets worse.""
I folded my arms.
"What exactly needs settling?""
"The property.""
"My property.""
He laughed.
"You wouldn't have that house without this family.""
I looked at Daniel.
He gave me a small nod.
Then I turned back to Richard.
"My grandmother's inheritance paid the deposit. My apartment sale funded the purchase. The deed is in my name. And your son has apparently been trying to transfer it without my permission.""
Richard's expression changed.
"You don't understand how these arrangements work.""
"Then explain them.""
He didn't.
Instead, he looked toward Ryan.
"Tell her.""
Ryan swallowed.
"Claire, Dad's business has been struggling.""
I waited.
"He needs temporary financing. That's all.""
"Then why use my house?""
"Because it's an asset.""
"It's my asset.""
"You're my wife.""
"Not for much longer.""
The words came out before I had time to think.
Ryan looked at me.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely surprised.
"What?""
I held his gaze.
"I want a divorce.""
Vanessa looked between us.
Richard shook his head.
"You're being emotional.""
"No. I'm finally being clear.""
Ryan stepped closer.
"Claire, you don't mean that.""
"I do.""
He lowered his voice.
"Think about the girls.""
"I am. That's why I'm doing this.""
His face tightened.
Then he said something that made me realize he still didn't understand what he had done.
"You'll regret turning your children against their father.""
I stared at him.
"Ryan, you don't need my help to destroy your relationship with them. You're doing that yourself.""
Daniel suggested that everyone leave while he documented the evidence.
Richard refused.
He stood in the driveway, demanding that I hand over the notebook.
Vanessa was crying now.
Ryan kept looking at her, apparently unsure whether to comfort her or blame her.
Eventually, Daniel told them that any further discussion should take place through legal representatives.
Richard pointed at me.
"This isn't finished, Claire.""
I met his eyes.
"You're right. It isn't.""
They finally left.
Vanessa was the last to get into the car.
Before closing the passenger door, she looked at me.
"You don't know everything.""
I stared at her.
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before becoming involved with my husband.""
She shook her head.
"Ryan isn't what you think.""
I almost smiled.
"Neither is your husband, apparently.""
She slammed the door.
The car disappeared down the street.
That evening, Daniel called to update me.
He had made copies of the notebook and contacted the relevant legal professionals.
He also explained that the marriage certificate needed to be verified through official records before anyone drew conclusions about the exact legal relationships involved.
"There's another concern," he said.
"What?""
"Vanessa's name appears in the corporate documents as an administrative contact for Bennett Maritime Holdings.""
"Does that mean she's involved in Richard's company?""
"Yes. And the notebook suggests she was coordinating the property arrangement.""
I sat on the sofa, listening to Lily babble in her bassinet.
"Why would Richard marry her?""
"That's something we don't know yet.""
"Could Ryan have known?""
"Based on the documents, he certainly knew they were closely connected.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Daniel, I need to understand why they were so desperate to get my signature.""
"I've requested additional records. There may be more than one reason.""
After we ended the call, I checked my email.
There was a message from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*RYAN DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HIS FATHER PROMISED ME.*
I hesitated before opening it.
The message contained no greeting.
Just one paragraph.
If you want to understand why Richard married me, meet me tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Harborview Café. Come alone. I have something that could change everything.
It was signed:
Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
My first instinct was to delete it.
But then I remembered her words in the driveway.
You don't know everything.
Perhaps she was telling the truth.
Perhaps she was trying to manipulate me.
Either way, I needed answers.
I forwarded the email to Daniel.
His response came immediately.
*Daniel:* Do not meet her alone. If you decide to speak with her, we will arrange a safe, documented meeting.
I agreed.
But before I could put my phone down, another notification appeared.
It was from Ryan.
*Ryan:* Vanessa is lying to you. Stay away from her.
A second message followed.
*Ryan:* Whatever she tells you, remember that she married my father for money.
Then a third.
*Ryan:* You and I need to talk before she destroys everything.
I read the messages twice.
My husband had spent the previous day insisting that Vanessa was simply someone he had met at work.
Now he was warning me about her.
I looked at the marriage certificate photograph again.
There was one detail I hadn't noticed before.
The date of Vanessa's marriage to Richard.
It was exactly eleven days before the first attempt to transfer my property.
And beneath the date was a witness's signature.
A name I recognized.
Ryan Bennett.
My husband hadn't just known about the marriage.
He had stood there and witnessed it.
And suddenly, I understood something far more disturbing.
May you like
The affair might have been real.
But the relationship between Ryan and Vanessa was only one part of a much bigger arrangement.
