Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Agreement Between Father and Son

The following morning, I met Daniel at his office.

He had arranged for Vanessa to speak with us in a private conference room.

I arrived fifteen minutes early.

My daughters were with Emily, who had insisted on taking them for the morning.

"You're not going into that meeting alone," she had told me.

"I won't. Daniel will be there.""

"Good. And if she starts crying, don't let her manipulate you.""

I smiled faintly.

"I'll try.""

Emily hugged me before I left.

"Claire, remember something. You don't owe any of them another chance to hurt you.""

Those words stayed with me as I entered Daniel's office.

At exactly ten, Vanessa arrived.

She wasn't wearing the white dress from the port or the expensive coat.

Instead, she wore dark trousers, a plain blouse, and almost no makeup.

She looked younger without the carefully constructed appearance.

Daniel invited her to sit.

Vanessa placed a small folder on the table.

"Thank you for agreeing to see me.""

I crossed my arms.

"Why did you marry Richard?""

She looked down.

"Because he offered me a deal.""

"What deal?""

"He promised to help me financially if I helped him with certain business matters.""

I stared at her.

"You're telling me you married my father-in-law for money?""

She nodded.

"At first, yes.""

"And Ryan?""

Her eyes moved toward me.

"Ryan was part of it.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Explain.""

Vanessa opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails, company documents, and a handwritten agreement.

She pushed the first document toward Daniel.

He examined it carefully.

"What is this?""

"A private agreement between Richard and Ryan.""

Daniel read the first page.

His expression changed.

"Where did you obtain this?""

"Richard kept a copy in his home office. I photographed it.""

I leaned forward.

"What does it say?""

Daniel read silently for another moment.

Then he looked at me.

"This appears to describe a proposed financial arrangement involving the family business.""

"Can you explain it?""

He turned the document toward me.

There were several paragraphs concerning a loan, a property guarantee, and a payment schedule.

The name of my house appeared repeatedly.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why did they need me?""

"Because the business needed money quickly. Richard had already approached several lenders, but they wanted additional security.""

"And my house was supposed to provide that security.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt anger rising.

"So you helped them.""

Vanessa looked away.

"I did.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard promised me a share of the money.""

I stared at her.

She continued.

"I was supposed to receive a substantial payment after the property was transferred and the financing was completed.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was studying another page.

"Was Ryan supposed to receive something too?""

Vanessa nodded.

"His father's company was going to cover several of his personal debts.""

I turned toward her.

"What debts?""

She hesitated.

"Credit cards. A car loan. Some private loans.""

I blinked.

"Ryan told me he had no debts.""

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"He told you a lot of things.""

Daniel raised his hand.

"Let's stay with the documents. Do you have evidence of these payments?""

Vanessa removed another set of papers.

"These are bank transfer confirmations.""

Daniel examined them.

Then he looked at the date.

"Some of these transactions occurred before the attempted property transfer.""

"Yes.""

"And you received payments?""

"Two.""

I stared at her.

"How much?""

She named an amount.

It was more than I had spent on the twins' first three months of medical expenses.

I felt my jaw tighten.

"While I was struggling to pay for formula, you were getting paid to help my husband take my home.""

Vanessa flinched.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice trembled.

"You have no idea what those months were like. I was recovering from childbirth. I was waking up every two hours. I was trying to figure out how to care for two newborns while my husband was supposedly working to support us.""

Vanessa looked at the table.

"I didn't know about the babies' expenses.""

"Did you know he froze my cards?""

She didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

"Did you know?""

Finally, she nodded.

"Richard told him to restrict your access because they were worried you would spend the money before the property arrangement was completed.""

I stared at her.

They had deliberately left me without access to money.

Not because of an argument.

Not because Ryan wanted boundaries.

Because they wanted to make me financially desperate enough to sign away my house.

Daniel closed the folder.

"Vanessa, why are you coming forward now?""

She looked at me.

"Because Richard has decided I'm no longer useful.""

"What does that mean?""

"He has been threatening to cancel the financial agreement. He says I made mistakes and that the property transfer failed because I didn't secure your signature.""

"And Ryan?""

Her expression hardened.

"Ryan told me he never intended to leave Claire.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He told me the marriage was only a formality. He said he needed me to play along until the property was transferred.""

I felt cold.

"But he kissed you.""

"Yes.""

"He took you to the hotel.""

"Yes.""

"He introduced you as someone special.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I believed he cared about me.""

I almost laughed.

"You helped him betray his wife, and now you're surprised he might betray you?""

She began crying.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Daniel asked, "Do you have evidence that Ryan made those statements?""

Vanessa nodded.

She removed a small USB drive from her handbag.

"Voice recordings.""

Daniel didn't take it immediately.

"Are these recordings legally obtained?""

"Some were made during conversations I participated in. I don't know which ones can be used.""

"Then we'll have them reviewed properly.""

Vanessa pushed the drive toward him.

"There are also messages.""

I looked at her.

"What messages?""

She opened her phone.

One conversation was between her and Ryan.

The first message was dated six weeks earlier.

*Ryan:* Once the house is secured, Dad will handle the transfer.

*Vanessa:* And what happens to Claire?

*Ryan:* She'll go to her parents. She'll have no choice.

Another message followed.

*Vanessa:* What about the girls?

*Ryan:* They'll be fine. She'll bring them.

I felt my throat tighten.

The next exchange was worse.

*Vanessa:* You promised we'd have a future.

*Ryan:* We will. Just let me finish this first.

I looked away.

I didn't want to read another word.

Daniel asked Vanessa to forward the messages through a proper process so their authenticity could be assessed.

Then he turned to me.

"Claire, we need to be careful. This information is important, but we shouldn't assume every statement is accurate until it is verified.""

I nodded.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"Why did you send me that email?""

She wiped her cheek.

"Because Richard is planning to blame everything on me.""

"What?""

"He has been preparing documents suggesting I acted without his knowledge. If the transaction becomes a legal problem, he wants me to take responsibility.""

I stared at her.

"You're afraid.""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

She looked up.

I continued.

"Now you understand what it feels like to be in a situation where someone you trusted decides you're disposable.""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

After the meeting, Daniel asked me to wait while he made several calls.

I sat in the reception area.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

I almost declined.

Then I remembered what Daniel had said about documenting communication.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

"Where are you?""

"Why?""

"Are you with Vanessa?""

I looked toward Daniel's office.

"That's none of your business.""

He laughed sharply.

"Of course it is. She's my problem.""

"Your problem?""

"Claire, listen to me. That woman is dangerous.""

I closed my eyes.

"Ryan, you brought her into our marriage.""

"I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

"Yes. A stupid mistake. Can we please talk like adults?""

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Seven months of lying is not a mistake.""

"I was lonely.""

"So was I.""

"You're not listening.""

"No, Ryan. For the first time, I'm actually listening to what you're saying.""

He sighed.

"Look, I want to fix this.""

I remained silent.

"We have children. We have a home. We have a history.""

I looked at the office wall.

A framed photograph showed Daniel standing with his wife and young son.

A normal family photograph.

Something I had once imagined having with Ryan.

"Where was our history when you kissed Vanessa at the port?""

"I was angry.""

"At me?""

"At everything.""

"Where was our marriage when you froze the accounts?""

He didn't answer.

"Where were our daughters when you told your mother I should leave them?""

"That's not what happened.""

"Then what happened?""

He became quiet.

Finally, he said, "My father was under pressure. I was trying to help him.""

I laughed softly.

"By stealing my property?""

"I wasn't stealing anything.""

"Then why did you need my signature?""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Claire, you need to understand something. My father built everything I have.""

"And I built a home with you.""

"That's different.""

"Why?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he said, "If you continue working with Daniel, things are going to get ugly.""

I sat straighter.

"Is that a threat?""

"No. It's a warning.""

"Then here's one for you. Don't come near my house without arranging it through your attorney.""

I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

But this time, I wasn't crying.

An hour later, Daniel returned with a concerned expression.

"There's something I need to show you.""

He placed a printed document on the desk.

It was a corporate filing.

Bennett Maritime Holdings had recently submitted a restructuring proposal.

I scanned the page.

Several properties were listed as potential security assets.

My house appeared among them.

But something else caught my attention.

The document listed a proposed guarantor.

Margaret Bennett.

Ryan's mother.

I frowned.

"Why is she involved?""

Daniel leaned back.

"That's what concerns me.""

"Didn't Richard say the company needed the house?""

"Yes. But according to this filing, your property was being discussed as part of a much larger financing arrangement.""

I read the document again.

Then I noticed a date.

The restructuring proposal had been prepared nearly nine months earlier.

Before the twins were born.

Before Ryan left for his seven-month voyage.

Before Vanessa entered my life.

I looked up.

"They planned this before he went to sea.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what the timeline suggests.""

I felt the room tilt slightly.

For seven months, I had believed Ryan was away earning money for our family.

I had defended him to everyone.

I had told my daughters stories about their father.

I had kissed his photograph before going to bed.

And all that time, he may have been preparing to use my inheritance to rescue his father's failing business.

I stared at the filing.

"Daniel, what happens if they try again?""

"We'll be prepared.""

"But what if they have another document?""

He hesitated.

"There's one more thing.""

He opened another folder.

Inside was a copy of a financial authorization.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature appeared beneath it.

I stared.

It looked almost exactly like mine.

Except I had never signed it.

Daniel pointed to the date.

"Three months ago.""

The same week I gave birth.

My mouth went dry.

"Where did this come from?""

"It was included in a preliminary submission to a financial institution.""

"What does it authorize?""

Daniel turned the page.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then the final line.

It authorized the transfer of a substantial amount of money from a personal account held in my name.

I looked at Daniel.

"How much?""

He met my eyes.

"Almost everything remaining from your grandmother's inheritance.""

I felt my hands go numb.

Because I suddenly remembered the bank alert I had received the morning after giving birth.

A notification about an unusual withdrawal.

Ryan had told me it was a routine adjustment.

He had said he would explain it later.

May you like

I had never asked again.

"Daniel," I whispered, "I think he already took the money.""
