Chapter 9: The Son Who Came Back From the Dead

I called the number immediately.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
"Hello?""
I gripped the phone.
"Noah?""
Silence.
Then a young man's voice replied.
"Is this James Carter?""
"Yes. I'm your father.""
I heard him breathe shakily.
"I've waited a long time to hear that.""
My eyes filled.
"Where are you?""
"At my house.""
"Are you alone?""
"No.""
I stood.
"Who is with you?""
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"Vanessa.""
I looked at Detective Reeves.
He was already reaching for his jacket.
"Noah, listen to me. Don't open the door.""
"I didn't.""
"Stay inside. Lock everything.""
"She's outside.""
"Don't speak to her.""
Noah's breathing became faster.
"She says she has something from Claire.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"She says she has my mother's final letter.""
My throat tightened.
"Your biological mother?""
"Yes.""
"Do you know where she got it?""
"No. But she's holding an old photograph.""
I looked at the photograph Margaret had given me.
"Describe it.""
"Claire is holding a baby. There's a hospital bracelet on her wrist.""
I couldn't speak.
Then Noah said:
"She just told me something.""
"What?""
"She said Claire never wanted me.""
I felt anger surge through me.
"That's a lie.""
Noah was silent.
"Your mother loved you," I said.
"She wrote about you. She fought to protect you. I have proof.""
His voice cracked.
"Then why did she let me go?""
"She didn't. Someone took you from her.""
I heard a sound through the phone.
A knock.
Then Vanessa's voice.
"Noah? Please. Open the door.""
He whispered:
"She's still here.""
I turned to Reeves.
"We need to get there.""
The detective nodded to the officers.
"Let's move.""
Noah lived in a small house outside Boston.
When we arrived, Vanessa's car was parked near the driveway.
The front door was open.
My heart pounded.
Reeves ordered the officers to surround the property.
I rushed toward the entrance.
"James, wait!""
I ignored him.
Inside, the house was quiet.
A lamp had been knocked over.
A framed photograph lay broken near the stairs.
Then I heard a voice.
"Don't come any closer.""
Vanessa stood in the living room.
She was holding a small envelope.
Noah stood several feet behind her.
He was tall, with dark hair and a narrow face.
He looked so much like Claire that I felt my knees weaken.
For seventeen years, I had believed my family consisted of two children.
Now I was looking at the son I had never known.
"James," Vanessa said.
I stared at her.
"Move away from him.""
She shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"Move.""
"Noah is confused. He's been manipulated by Daniel.""
Noah stepped forward.
"Stop lying.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"I know who you are.""
She looked at him.
"You're my son.""
"No.""
Her face tightened.
"I raised you.""
"You didn't.""
I looked between them.
"What happened?""
Noah spoke first.
"When I was a baby, the Walsh family adopted me. They were told my birth mother had died.""
He swallowed.
"When I was sixteen, my adoptive mother found a letter hidden in my medical records. It said my biological mother was Claire Carter.""
I felt my eyes burn.
Noah continued.
"After that, Daniel found me. He told me about the hospital records. He told me I had a father.""
I stepped closer.
"I didn't know, son.""
Noah looked at me.
"I know.""
His eyes filled.
"I've seen your photographs. Daniel showed me.""
I reached out, then stopped.
I didn't know whether he wanted me to touch him.
He looked down at my hand.
Then he stepped forward and embraced me.
I held my son.
The son I had never held as a baby.
The son Claire had carried in her heart until the day she died.
For a few seconds, the rest of the world disappeared.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"James, you need to listen to me.""
I released Noah.
"What?""
She held up the envelope.
"This is Claire's final letter.""
I stared at it.
"Give it to me.""
"Not until you understand.""
"Understand what?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Claire didn't want Noah raised by you.""
I looked at Noah.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa opened the envelope.
"Read it.""
I took the paper.
The handwriting was Claire's.
I recognized it immediately.
James, if you ever discover what happened to Noah, please understand that I made the decision to protect him.
I read the next lines.
I know you will be angry. I know you will feel betrayed. But there are things you don't know about your family.
My hands began shaking.
The truth is that I did not trust you to protect him from the people around us.
I stopped.
Vanessa watched me carefully.
"Keep reading," she said.
I looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because Claire knew you better than you think.""
I continued.
There is a reason Vanessa was chosen to carry Emily. There is a reason Daniel helped arrange Noah's placement. And there is a reason I never told you about the second pregnancy.
The next paragraph had been torn away.
Only a few words remained.
If you discover the truth about the first embryo...
I looked up.
"What first embryo?""
Vanessa's face changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.
Noah stepped forward.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Nothing.""
I stared at her.
"Tell me.""
She backed away.
"James, you need to stop.""
"Did Claire have another pregnancy before Noah?""
She said nothing.
"Was there another baby?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Then Noah spoke.
"Mom, who is the first embryo?""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Don't call me that.""
He flinched.
I stepped between them.
"You're not touching him.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"After everything I've done, this is how you treat me?""
I stared at her.
"What have you done?""
"I gave you a family!""
"You stole my son!""
"I protected him!""
"You lied to Claire!""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Claire was going to destroy all of us!""
Reeves entered the room with two officers.
"Vanessa Bennett, step away from the envelope.""
She turned toward him.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with.""
"Put it down.""
She dropped the letter.
An officer approached.
But Vanessa suddenly looked at me.
"James, before you let them take me, ask Daniel what happened to the first baby.""
I stared at her.
"What first baby?""
She smiled sadly.
"Ask him why Claire had three embryos created but only two children were born.""
I felt my blood run cold.
Three embryos.
Emily.
Noah.
And the third?
Reeves handcuffed Vanessa.
She didn't resist.
Instead, she looked at Noah.
"One day you'll understand why I did it.""
Noah stared at her.
"I don't want to understand you.""
She lowered her head.
The officers led her outside.
At the police station, Daniel was waiting.
When I mentioned the first embryo, he went pale.
"Where did you hear that?""
"Vanessa.""
He closed his eyes.
"Of course.""
I sat across from him.
"Tell me.""
Daniel looked at Noah.
Then at me.
"Claire and James created three embryos during the original fertility treatment.""
I nodded.
"I know about Emily and Noah.""
"The third embryo was never implanted.""
"Where is it?""
"At St. Mary's.""
I frowned.
"That hospital closed its fertility department years ago.""
"The records were transferred to a private storage facility.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked down.
"Because someone had been paying the storage fees.""
"Who?""
"Vanessa.""
I stood.
"Why would she pay for an embryo that wasn't hers?""
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"Because it wasn't simply an embryo.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
"During the fertility treatment, the laboratory discovered a genetic abnormality in the third embryo. Claire wanted it preserved for further research. She believed it might help doctors understand the condition that had caused her miscarriages.""
I frowned.
"And?""
Daniel hesitated.
"The embryo was removed from the research program without her consent.""
"By whom?""
He looked at Noah.
Then he answered.
"Richard Hale.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did he do with it?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. But I found a payment record showing that Vanessa transferred money to the storage facility every month for seventeen years.""
I stared at him.
"Why would she keep it?""
"Because she believed it could be used to create another child.""
I couldn't speak.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another life my wife had tried to control.
Then Daniel added:
"There's something else you need to know about that embryo.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He placed a final document on the table.
It was a laboratory report.
The date was September 2026.
Only one month earlier.
The embryo had been thawed for testing.
And beneath the results was a note:
Viable. Successful implantation pending.
I stared at the page.
"Who authorized this?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Vanessa.""
I felt sick.
"Is she pregnant?""
"No.""
"Then who?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned the page.
There was a name in the recipient field.
*Sarah Bennett.*
Vanessa's dead sister.
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Sarah may not be dead.""
Nobody spoke.
I read the report again.
Sarah Bennett.
The woman Vanessa had claimed died after giving birth to Ethan.
The woman whose baby had supposedly been raised as Vanessa's own.
The woman whose death certificate had been signed by Richard Hale.
"Are you telling me Sarah is alive?""
Daniel nodded.
"I received a message from her three weeks ago.""
"Where is she?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why didn't you tell the police?""
"Because the message included a photograph.""
He pulled out his phone.
The photograph showed a woman sitting in a wheelchair beside a hospital window.
She looked older than the woman in the old photograph, but I recognized her face.
Sarah.
Below the photograph was a message.
Daniel, if you ever find James Carter, tell him I have the original records. Tell him Vanessa isn't the only person who knows what happened at St. Mary's.
I stared at the photograph.
Then another message appeared.
It had been sent only minutes earlier.
The baby is alive.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"James Carter?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Sarah Bennett.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Where are you?""
She began crying.
"Somewhere Vanessa can't reach me.""
"Are you safe?""
"For now.""
"What baby are you talking about?""
There was a long silence.
Then she said:
"The child Vanessa has been hiding from you.""
I gripped the phone.
"What child?""
Sarah's voice broke.
"James, Vanessa didn't just carry Emily. She didn't just raise Ethan. She has another child.""
I felt the room spin.
"Where?""
Sarah whispered:
"He's been living in your house.""
I couldn't breathe.
Then she said the words that destroyed everything I thought I knew about the last twelve years.
"James, the boy you raised as Ethan isn't the child Vanessa brought home from St. Mary's.""
I looked at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
And finally at the photograph of the woman who had supposedly been dead for seventeen years.
Sarah continued:
"The real Ethan disappeared the night I gave birth.""
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because if Sarah was telling the truth, then the boy I had raised as my son might not be Vanessa's biological child at all.
And somewhere in the middle of all these lies, the real Ethan was still missing.
Reeves grabbed his phone.
"James, don't move. We're going back to your house.""
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because if Sarah is telling the truth, someone has been living in that house under a stolen identity.""
Then my phone received one final message.
A photograph.
It showed Ethan sitting in our kitchen.
But behind him, reflected in the dark window, stood a second young man.
He looked exactly like Ethan.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same age.
May you like
And beneath the photograph were seven words:
You have been raising the wrong son.
