Amused

Chapter 5: My Stepson's Secret

I felt my stomach drop.

"Ethan?""

Emily nodded.

"He was standing near the stairs when Mom pushed me.""

I couldn't speak.

Ethan had sat beside me in the hospital waiting room.

He had cried.

He had told me he was afraid.

And he had deliberately left out the most important part.

"Did he help her?"" I asked.

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Did he touch you?""

"No.""

"Then why was he there?""

"He was holding something.""

"What?""

Emily closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"A white envelope.""

The same envelope I had been searching for.

Reeves looked at me.

"Do you know where your stepson is now?""

I shook my head.

"He was here earlier. He may have gone home.""

The detective stood.

"One of my officers will speak with him.""

I looked at Emily.

"Sweetheart, you did the right thing.""

She began crying harder.

"I don't want Ethan to get in trouble.""

I brushed her hair back.

"You're not responsible for what other people choose to do.""

But I couldn't stop thinking about Ethan.

He had been seventeen when this happened.

Old enough to understand that his sister was being hurt.

Young enough to be manipulated by a parent.

And perhaps frightened enough to make a terrible decision.

I found Ethan outside the hospital's main entrance.

He was sitting on a concrete bench beneath a fluorescent light, holding a paper cup of coffee.

When he saw me, he immediately stood.

"Dad.""

I stopped a few feet away.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

His face went pale.

"Tell you what?""

"That you were standing at the top of the stairs when Emily fell.""

He looked toward the parking lot.

Then he lowered his head.

"She told you.""

"Yes.""

Ethan put the coffee down.

"I didn't push her.""

"I didn't say you did.""

"I didn't touch her!""

His voice cracked.

"Then why did you lie?""

He rubbed his eyes.

"Because Mom told me to.""

I felt anger rising, but I forced myself to remain calm.

"What was in the envelope?""

Ethan looked at me.

"How do you know about that?""

"Emily told me.""

He sat down again.

I remained standing.

"Tell me what happened.""

Ethan stared at the concrete.

"Mom came into my room around eight. She was carrying a folder. She told me Emily had stolen something important.""

"What did she ask you to do?""

"She wanted me to find Emily and get the envelope.""

"Why?""

"She said it contained information that could destroy our family.""

"And you believed her?""

He nodded.

"She told me Claire had been lying to you for years. She said Emily was using the information to hurt her.""

I shook my head.

"Your mother had no right to involve you.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you?""

Ethan looked up.

"Because she said she would tell my biological father I had been stealing from her.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

He swallowed.

"She said she'd report me to the police. She said she'd make sure I never saw him again.""

I sat beside him.

"Ethan, your mother cannot control your relationship with your father forever.""

He looked at me.

"She already did.""

I remembered the DNA report.

"Is that why you were holding the envelope?""

He nodded.

"I took it from Emily before she went upstairs. Mom told me to give it to her.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Where is it?""

Ethan reached inside his jacket and pulled out a folded brown envelope.

"I kept it.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because I read the first page.""

He handed it to me.

The envelope contained a document from St. Mary's Hospital.

At the top was the hospital's official seal.

Below it were three names.

Claire Carter.

Vanessa Bennett.

James Carter.

I began reading.

The document described a gestational surrogacy arrangement, signed before Emily's birth.

Claire was listed as the genetic mother.

Vanessa was listed as the gestational carrier.

I read the next section.

The agreement stated that parental rights would be transferred to James and Claire after birth, subject to the necessary legal documentation.

But there was a handwritten amendment.

It had been added three days before Claire died.

The intended mother, Claire Carter, has requested a temporary suspension of the transfer pending independent review.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you read this?""

"Yes.""

"Anything else?""

He nodded.

"There was another page.""

He pulled it from the envelope.

It was a medical report.

The date was June 17, 2009.

Claire's final hospital admission.

The cause of death was listed as complications related to an underlying cardiac condition.

But beneath the official diagnosis was a handwritten note.

Patient requested immediate contact with Daniel Mercer regarding unauthorized alteration of neonatal records.

I looked at Ethan.

"Where did you find this?""

"In the folder.""

"Did your mother know you had it?""

"I don't think so.""

I read the note again.

Unauthorized alteration of neonatal records.

This was no longer simply a family secret.

Someone had altered official medical documents.

And Claire had discovered it before she died.

My phone rang.

Detective Reeves.

"James, we have a problem.""

"What happened?""

"We went to your house to collect the security camera system.""

"And?""

"The system was removed.""

I closed my eyes.

"Vanessa?""

"She isn't answering her phone. Her car is gone.""

I stood.

"Can you find her?""

"We're trying.""

Then Reeves lowered his voice.

"There's something else. Dr. Hale left the hospital twenty minutes ago. He hasn't returned any of our calls.""

I looked at the brown envelope.

"Do you think they're together?""

"Possibly. But we need evidence.""

I glanced at Ethan.

"Detective, my stepson has the original documents.""

There was a pause.

"Bring him to the station. We'll need to secure those records.""

I hung up.

Ethan was staring at the ground.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"There's something else I didn't tell you.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?""

He looked directly at me.

"Mom made me delete the hallway footage.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

"She took my laptop. She said she needed to remove the video because it showed Emily stealing the envelope.""

"Did you delete it?""

Ethan shook his head.

"No.""

"Where is it?""

He pulled out his phone.

"I uploaded a copy before she took the laptop.""

My heart began pounding.

"Can you show me?""

He nodded and opened a video file.

The footage was grainy but clear enough to recognize the kitchen and the staircase.

The timestamp read 8:14 p.m.

Emily appeared first, holding a brown envelope.

Vanessa followed her.

Their mouths moved, but the camera had no sound.

Then Emily turned toward the stairs.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

I leaned closer.

Ethan paused the video.

"Watch what happens next.""

He pressed play.

Emily pulled away.

Vanessa reached for her again.

Then something happened that made my blood turn cold.

A third person entered the frame.

A man.

He came through the front door, carrying a black leather briefcase.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Richard Hale.

He walked toward Vanessa.

She pointed upstairs.

The doctor looked toward Emily.

Then he placed his briefcase on the floor and did something I couldn't believe.

He locked the front door.

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"Keep playing.""

Ethan did.

The doctor approached the staircase.

Emily backed away.

Vanessa stepped between them.

Then the camera caught something that had been missing from every version of the story I had heard.

Dr. Hale raised his hand.

He wasn't trying to stop the argument.

He was holding a small object.

A syringe.

I grabbed the phone.

"What's that?""

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know.""

On the video, Emily noticed the object and tried to move past him.

Vanessa caught her.

The footage became chaotic.

A few seconds later, Emily disappeared from the frame.

Then Dr. Hale turned toward the camera.

He stared directly into the lens.

And smiled.

The video ended.

I stood in silence.

Then I played it again.

There was no mistaking it.

The doctor who had treated my daughter for years had entered our house on the night she was injured.

He had locked the front door.

And he had brought a syringe.

I called Reeves.

"You need to see this immediately.""

"What's on it?""

"Dr. Hale was at my house tonight.""

"What?""

"He brought a syringe.""

Reeves went quiet.

Then he said:

"James, don't move. We're sending officers to you now.""

I looked at Ethan.

"Did your mother tell you why the doctor came?""

Ethan nodded slowly.

"She said he was there to help.""

"Help with what?""

His eyes filled.

"To make sure Emily never told anyone what happened at the hospital.""

We arrived at the police station just before two in the morning.

Ethan handed over his phone and the original envelope.

Reeves arranged for the video to be copied and secured.

I sat in a small interview room, staring at the wall.

My daughter was in the hospital.

My wife had disappeared.

A doctor who had treated my child for years was now a suspect.

And the boy I had raised as my own was sitting in another room, answering questions about the night his sister nearly died.

I thought about Claire.

I thought about the woman she had been.

And I wondered how much pain she had carried alone.

A knock interrupted my thoughts.

Reeves entered.

"We found Vanessa's car.""

"Where?""

"At a motel outside town.""

"Was she there?""

"No. But we found something in the trunk.""

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a small black suitcase.

Inside were several passports, a stack of cash, and a folder containing medical records.

I looked at the folder.

"What is it?""

Reeves opened it.

"Your wife's medical history.""

I frowned.

"Why would she keep that in a suitcase?""

He turned to the final page.

A laboratory report.

The date was two months earlier.

The test compared DNA samples from Vanessa, Ethan, and an unidentified male.

The result showed a biological relationship between Ethan and the unidentified male.

Reeves looked at me.

"There's a name on the report.""

I leaned forward.

He turned the paper around.

The name was Daniel Mercer.

I stared at it.

Ethan's biological father was Daniel.

The same man who had helped arrange Emily's birth.

The same man Claire had trusted with her final letter.

The same man Emily had called before she lost consciousness.

Then Reeves said something else.

"There's a note written on the back.""

I turned the page.

It was in Vanessa's handwriting.

If Daniel ever finds out Ethan is his son, everything is over.

I stared at the words.

For seventeen years, Vanessa had hidden the truth about Emily.

For eleven years, she had lied about Ethan's father.

And now both children were connected to the same man.

But before I could ask another question, Reeves's phone rang.

He answered.

"Reeves.""

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean he's there?""

He stood.

"Keep him inside. Don't let him leave.""

He ended the call and looked at me.

"James, Daniel Mercer just arrived at the police station.""

My heart began pounding.

"Why?""

Reeves hesitated.

"Because he says he knows who pushed your daughter.""

May you like

Then he added:

"And he says Vanessa wasn't the person who planned it.""
