Amused

Chapter 2: The Boy Who Saw Everything

I stared at my wife.

"Don't trust Emily?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Those were your exact words.""

"James, you're twisting everything I say.""

I placed Claire's folder on the dresser.

"Then explain what happened at St. Mary's.""

She shook her head.

"Not tonight.""

"Why not?""

"Because you're angry. You're exhausted. And you're looking for someone to blame.""

I laughed bitterly.

"My daughter is unconscious in a hospital bed. My dead wife's letter says you were hiding something. And now you're telling me not to trust the girl who nearly died in this house.""

"She found something that doesn't belong to her.""

"What?""

Vanessa looked at the folder.

"Something that should have stayed buried.""

I took out my phone.

"Detective Reeves wants to speak with me.""

Her eyes widened.

"Why?""

"He found blood on the stairs.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because Emily fell.""

"Then the blood shouldn't be a surprise.""

She moved toward the dresser and grabbed the folder.

I caught her wrist.

"Don't.""

For a second, we stood facing each other.

Her fingers were cold.

"Let go of me, James.""

I released her.

She held the folder against her chest.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"Maybe. But I'm done making decisions based on what you tell me.""

I walked out.

Behind me, I heard her whisper:

"You have no idea what Claire did.""

I stopped.

"What did you say?""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"Nothing.""

But I had heard her.

And I knew she hadn't meant for me to.

I returned to the hospital shortly after midnight.

Ethan was sitting near the vending machines, staring at a bottle of untouched water.

He looked up when he saw me.

"You're back.""

"Where's your mother?""

"She went home.""

I sat beside him.

"Ethan, I need you to tell me what happened tonight.""

His shoulders stiffened.

"I already told you.""

"You told me Emily fell.""

"That's what Mom said.""

"I'm asking what you saw.""

He stared at his shoes.

A janitor pushed a cleaning cart past us. Somewhere down the corridor, a monitor beeped steadily.

Then Ethan spoke.

"Can we go somewhere else?""

We moved into an empty family waiting room.

He closed the door.

For a few seconds, he didn't say anything.

Then he pulled a folded piece of paper from his jacket.

"I found this in Mom's bedroom.""

I unfolded it.

It was a photograph.

Claire was sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

My chest tightened.

I recognized the room.

St. Mary's Hospital.

October 12.

Emily's birthday.

But there was something strange about the photograph.

Claire looked exhausted, but she was smiling at the baby.

Vanessa wasn't looking at either of them.

She was staring directly at the camera.

On the back, someone had written:

Two mothers. One promise.

I looked at Ethan.

"Where did you get this?""

"Mom had it inside an old book.""

"Why did you take it?""

"Because I heard her talking about it.""

"With whom?""

He hesitated.

"Grandma.""

Vanessa's mother, Margaret, lived about forty minutes away. She rarely visited us, and when she did, she usually left after dinner.

"What did they say?""

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

"They were arguing. Mom said the past was supposed to stay buried. Grandma said she couldn't keep lying forever.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Did you hear anything else?""

Ethan nodded.

"Grandma said Claire deserved better.""

My stomach tightened.

"And what did your mother say?""

He swallowed.

"She said Claire was dead, and dead people couldn't ruin what she had built.""

I closed my eyes.

The words sounded too familiar.

Then Ethan continued.

"Mom also said Emily had found the original document.""

"What document?""

"I don't know. But she was furious.""

I leaned forward.

"Did you see Emily tonight?""

He nodded.

"Before everything happened.""

"Tell me.""

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"She came downstairs around seven thirty. She was holding a brown envelope. Mom was in the kitchen.""

"What happened?""

"They started arguing.""

"What about?""

"Emily asked Mom why she had a hospital record with her name on it. She said it wasn't the same as the record Dad kept in the family safe.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Then?""

"Mom told her to give it back.""

"Did Emily?""

"No.""

Ethan's voice cracked.

"She said she was going to tell you everything.""

I stared at him.

"What did Vanessa do?""

"She grabbed Emily's arm.""

He stopped.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Ethan.""

"She grabbed her really hard. Emily pulled away and knocked a glass off the counter.""

"Did your mother hit her?""

Ethan shook his head quickly.

"I don't know. I went upstairs.""

"Why?""

"Mom told me to.""

"Did you hear anything?""

He nodded.

For a moment, he seemed unable to breathe.

"Emily shouted that she knew who her real mother was.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though someone had struck me in the chest.

"What?""

Ethan wiped his face.

"Then Mom said something.""

"What?""

He looked directly at me.

"She said, 'Your father doesn't know the truth because he doesn't deserve to know.''"

I stood up.

"Where is the envelope?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Emily take it upstairs?""

"I think so.""

"Did you see her fall?""

Ethan's eyes moved toward the door.

Then he whispered:

"I saw Mom standing at the top of the stairs.""

My entire body went cold.

"What was Emily doing?""

"She was trying to get past her.""

"And then?""

Ethan began crying.

"I heard something break. Then Emily screamed.""

He covered his face.

"I came out of my room, and she was at the bottom of the stairs. Mom was standing above her.""

"Was your mother trying to help?""

Ethan shook his head.

"She was holding Emily's phone.""

I gripped the back of the chair.

"What did she do?""

"She looked at the screen. Then she said something.""

"What?""

Ethan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"She said, 'If you tell James what you found, Emily, I swear you'll destroy this family—and I'll make sure he knows it was your fault.''"

The exact words from the emergency recording.

The words I had heard repeated in my nightmares since the phone call.

I sat down slowly.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

Ethan looked at me with terrified eyes.

"Because Mom said she'd send me away.""

"Where?""

"To my biological father.""

I frowned.

"I thought your father lived in Ohio.""

"He does.""

"What's wrong with that?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then he pulled another photograph from his jacket.

It showed a man standing outside a courthouse.

The man had one arm around a little boy.

Ethan pointed to the man.

"That's my father.""

I nodded.

"And?""

"Mom told me he died when I was six.""

I stared at the picture.

"He's alive?""

Ethan nodded.

"I found his number in her old phone. I called him last month.""

"Did you speak to him?""

"Yes.""

"What did he tell you?""

Ethan's face changed.

"He said Mom had told him he wasn't allowed to contact me because I wasn't his biological son.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"He said there was a DNA test.""

The room seemed to shrink.

"Did he show you?""

Ethan reached into his pocket and handed me a folded document.

I opened it.

The report was dated eleven years earlier.

The results stated that the man identified as Ethan's father was not biologically related to him.

At the bottom was a signature.

Vanessa Carter.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you ever ask your mother about this?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

He swallowed.

"She said my real father had abandoned me.""

"Do you believe her?""

Ethan shook his head.

"Not anymore.""

I sat quietly.

Two children.

Two sets of secrets.

And my wife seemed to be at the center of both.

Suddenly, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

"Mr. Carter?""

I stood.

"Yes?""

"Your daughter is awake.""

I almost ran.

Emily looked impossibly small against the hospital bed.

Her eyes were half-open, and her lips were dry.

When she saw me, she tried to lift her hand.

"Dad?""

I took it carefully.

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

She winced.

"Don't let Mom come in.""

I looked toward the doorway.

"She won't.""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Did you find it?""

"The photographs?""

She shook her head.

"The envelope.""

I leaned closer.

"Not yet. But I'm looking.""

She swallowed.

"She knows.""

"Who?""

"Mom.""

I squeezed her hand.

"Emily, I need you to tell me what happened.""

Her breathing became shallow.

"She found out I had the hospital papers.""

"What papers?""

Emily looked toward the monitor.

Then she whispered:

"The original birth certificate.""

My heart pounded.

"What does it say?""

Before she could answer, the monitor began beeping faster.

A nurse entered immediately.

"Sir, I need you to step outside.""

"Please, just one more minute.""

"She needs rest.""

Emily gripped my fingers.

"Dad...""

"I'm here.""

She looked at me with frightened eyes.

"Mom isn't the person who gave birth to me.""

I stopped breathing.

The nurse gently guided me away.

"Mr. Carter, please.""

As I reached the doorway, Emily spoke again.

"Claire wasn't my—"

Her voice disappeared beneath the sound of the monitor.

The nurse closed the curtain.

I stood in the corridor, unable to move.

Then my phone rang.

It was Detective Reeves.

"Mr. Carter, where are you?""

"At the hospital.""

"Good. We need to speak immediately.""

"What happened?""

"We reviewed the emergency call. There's something you need to hear.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

"Your wife called 911 at 8:23. But we also recovered a second recording from the dispatch system.""

"What's on it?""

A pause.

Then Reeves said:

"Your daughter was calling someone before the emergency services arrived.""

My throat tightened.

"Me?""

"No. Someone else.""

"Who?""

"An outgoing call was made from Emily's phone at 8:19 p.m. It lasted eleven seconds.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who did she call?""

Reeves answered.

"Daniel.""

I looked down at Claire's photograph.

The man standing beside my first wife.

May you like

The man whose name appeared in her final letter.

And the man my daughter had apparently called just minutes before she fell.
