Chapter 4: The Doctor Who Signed Her Death Certificate

Dr. Richard Hale stood beside my daughter's hospital bed, holding a tablet against his chest.
He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, expensive glasses, and a calm expression that suddenly made my skin crawl.
For twelve years, I had trusted this man.
He had treated Emily's childhood infections, examined her after a bicycle accident, and even attended Claire's funeral.
He had stood beside me at the cemetery and told me how sorry he was.
Now I was looking at a photograph showing him with Vanessa three days before Claire died.
And someone had just accused him of changing my daughter's birth records.
"Mr. Carter?"" he said.
"I wasn't expecting to see you here.""
I slipped the photograph into my pocket.
"Doctor, we need to talk.""
He glanced at Emily.
"Perhaps another time. Your daughter needs rest.""
"Actually, I think she needs answers.""
His expression barely changed.
"About what?""
I stepped between him and the bed.
"October 12. St. Mary's Hospital. Seventeen years ago.""
For the first time, his fingers tightened around the tablet.
"I don't understand.""
"Really? Because I have a photograph of you standing outside that hospital with my wife three days before she died.""
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then he turned toward Emily.
"Has someone been giving you information about the past?""
Emily pulled the blanket closer to her chest.
I noticed the movement.
"She's not the person you need to question," I said.
Dr. Hale gave me a small, professional smile.
"Mr. Carter, I understand you're under considerable stress. But your daughter has suffered a serious injury. I would strongly recommend that you focus on her recovery.""
"Did you change her birth certificate?""
His smile disappeared.
"That's an outrageous accusation.""
"Did you?""
He glanced toward the doorway.
A nurse was passing by.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Some medical records are confidential. You wouldn't understand the procedures involved.""
"I understand that a dead woman left me a letter saying someone had hidden the truth about my daughter.""
He went completely still.
"What woman?""
"Claire.""
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Dr. Hale quietly placed the tablet on the counter.
"Your first wife was a very complicated patient.""
"She was my wife.""
"I know.""
"Then tell me why you were with Vanessa three days before Claire died.""
He looked at Emily again.
"I think this conversation should take place outside.""
"No.""
"Mr. Carter—"
"Answer me.""
His jaw tightened.
"Your wife was involved in a private medical arrangement. There were legal complications. I was trying to help resolve them.""
"What arrangement?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Was Vanessa carrying Emily?""
Dr. Hale closed his eyes briefly.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Yes.""
I gripped the bed railing.
"Why did Claire pretend she had given birth?""
"That was her decision.""
"Who else knew?""
"Vanessa. Claire. Daniel Mercer. And myself.""
"Did Margaret know?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
I felt the pieces moving into place.
Five people had known the truth.
And every one of them had allowed me to believe something different.
"Why was the arrangement never legally completed?"" I asked.
Dr. Hale looked at Emily.
"Because Claire changed her mind.""
"About what?""
"She wanted to terminate the arrangement.""
"After the baby was born?""
He nodded.
"She believed Vanessa was becoming too attached to the child.""
I looked toward my daughter.
Emily was watching us silently.
"Why would that matter?""
"Because Vanessa had begun referring to the baby as hers. Claire was concerned that she might attempt to establish parental rights.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"Then why did Claire let her remain in our lives?""
"Because Vanessa threatened to expose the arrangement and create a scandal.""
I remembered the photograph in Claire's drawer.
Two mothers. One promise.
"Did you help Vanessa?""
Dr. Hale didn't answer.
That was enough.
I pulled out my phone and showed him the photograph.
"Was this taken three days before Claire died?""
He stared at it.
Then he looked up.
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
His face became pale.
"Because Claire wasn't supposed to have that photograph.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"What do you mean?""
He looked toward the corridor.
Then he leaned closer.
"Mr. Carter, there are things you should understand before you start accusing people. Claire's death was investigated. The findings were conclusive.""
"Then why does Emily think someone caused it?""
His eyes flickered.
"Your daughter has been talking to Daniel Mercer.""
"Yes.""
"That man is dangerous.""
"Why?""
"Because he has spent seventeen years blaming other people for his own mistakes.""
I stepped back.
"Which mistakes?""
Dr. Hale picked up his tablet.
"I can't discuss this further.""
"You're not leaving.""
He looked at me.
For a moment, his calm expression disappeared.
Then he said:
"Ask your wife what happened to the original surrogate agreement. Ask her why she needed Claire's signature after the baby was born.""
Before I could respond, he walked out.
I immediately called Detective Reeves.
He answered on the second ring.
"James?""
"I need you to come to Emily's room.""
"What's happened?""
"The doctor treating my daughter was involved in changing her birth records.""
There was a pause.
"Who?""
"Richard Hale.""
"Don't confront him again. I'll be there in ten minutes.""
Detective Reeves arrived with another officer.
I explained everything, including the photograph and Dr. Hale's admission.
Reeves listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he asked Emily whether she wanted to speak.
She nodded.
"Mr. Reeves?""
"Yes, Emily.""
"Can you arrest my mother?""
The detective pulled a chair closer.
"That's not something I can promise. But I can investigate what happened.""
Emily looked down.
"She pushed me.""
The room went silent.
I reached for her hand.
Reeves opened his notebook.
"Can you tell me exactly what happened?""
Emily took a shaky breath.
"I found the documents in Mom's room. I wasn't looking for them. I was looking for Dad's old passport.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted to check something about Claire's birthday. There was a photograph with a date written on the back.""
She glanced at me.
"Then I found a folder.""
"What was inside?""
"An original hospital record. It had my name on it, but it said Vanessa was my biological mother.""
Reeves nodded.
"What happened next?""
"Mom came in. She asked what I was holding. I told her I knew.""
"What did she do?""
"She grabbed the papers.""
Emily's eyes filled.
"I told her I was going to show Dad.""
"Then?""
"She said I was going to ruin everything.""
I squeezed Emily's hand.
"Take your time, sweetheart.""
Emily continued.
"I ran toward the stairs. She followed me. I thought she was going to take the papers, but she grabbed my shoulder.""
Her breathing became uneven.
"She pushed me.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
Reeves remained calm.
"Did you fall immediately?""
Emily shook her head.
"I grabbed the railing. Then she pulled me backward.""
"Did she say anything?""
Emily looked at me.
"She said I wasn't supposed to exist.""
My chest tightened.
"Emily...""
"Then she said Claire should have left things alone.""
Tears ran down her cheeks.
"I lost my grip.""
Reeves closed his notebook.
"Thank you. That's very important.""
Then Emily reached beneath her pillow again.
"I have something else.""
She pulled out a tiny plastic memory card.
I stared at it.
"Where did you get that?""
"From the camera in the hallway.""
Reeves leaned forward.
"What camera?""
"The little security camera Dad installed last Christmas. Mom told us it stopped working.""
I remembered installing it myself.
Vanessa had complained that it made the house feel like a hotel.
I had removed the main unit but left the camera connected to a small memory card.
"Did you take it from the camera?"" I asked.
Emily nodded.
"I found it behind the television. Mom had removed it, but I think she forgot about the backup.""
Reeves carefully placed the card inside an evidence envelope.
"Did you watch the recording?""
Emily nodded again.
"Only part of it.""
"What did you see?""
She swallowed.
"Mom wasn't alone.""
"Who was with her?""
Emily looked toward the closed door.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Ethan.""
