Amused

Chapter 6: The Father Nobody Knew About

Daniel Mercer looked nothing like the man in Claire's photograph.

The man who entered the interview room was thin, pale, and walked with the help of a metal cane. His right hand trembled slightly, and his speech was slower than I expected.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

They were the same eyes I had seen in the photograph beside Claire.

He looked at me.

"James Carter?""

I stood.

"Daniel.""

He nodded.

"Thank you for coming.""

"I didn't come here for you.""

"I know.""

I glanced at Detective Reeves.

"Why does he say he knows who pushed Emily?""

Reeves gestured toward the chair.

"Let's hear him out.""

Daniel lowered himself into the seat.

He placed a thick envelope on the table.

"I have spent seventeen years waiting for this conversation.""

I remained standing.

"Then start talking.""

Daniel looked down at his hands.

"Claire was my closest friend.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"She never mentioned you.""

"She couldn't.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa had made sure she couldn't.""

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs, medical reports, and copies of emails.

He placed the first photograph in front of me.

It showed Claire sitting beside a hospital window.

She looked thinner than I remembered, but she was smiling.

Daniel pointed to the date.

"June 14, 2009.""

Three days before she died.

"She called me that afternoon," he continued.

"She had discovered that the original birth records had been altered.""

"By whom?""

"Richard Hale.""

I leaned forward.

"What did he change?""

"Your daughter's biological parent information. The original record identified Vanessa as the gestational carrier and Claire as the genetic mother. But a later record listed Claire as the woman who had delivered the child.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa wanted to become Emily's legal mother.""

I frowned.

"She already was her biological mother.""

"Being a biological mother and having legal parental rights are not the same thing.""

Daniel continued.

"Vanessa believed that if she could establish herself as Emily's legal mother, she could eventually claim custody.""

"Why would she want that?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she was in love with you.""

I laughed without humor.

"She could have told me.""

"Claire believed Vanessa had become obsessed with the idea of having a family with you.""

I thought about our wedding.

Vanessa's warm smile.

Her promise that I would never have to choose between the past and the future.

Daniel continued.

"Claire tried to end the arrangement. She wanted the truth documented before anything happened to her.""

"Why did she die?""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Because she found out what Richard Hale had done.""

I stared at him.

"Are you saying he killed her?""

"I'm saying Claire believed he was willing to let her die rather than allow the truth to come out.""

My hands tightened.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"I know.""

"Do you have proof?""

Daniel pulled out another document.

It was a copy of Claire's medical chart.

Several entries had been highlighted.

"Claire was admitted on June 17 with chest pain and severe shortness of breath. Her regular cardiologist had warned that she needed immediate treatment if those symptoms appeared.""

I read the page.

"What happened?""

"Dr. Hale signed off on her condition being stable. He delayed the transfer to the cardiac unit.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa asked him to.""

I stared at him.

"How do you know?""

Daniel pointed to a handwritten note.

"Because I heard the conversation.""

I looked up.

"You were there?""

"Outside the room.""

"What did you hear?""

Daniel took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa told him that if Claire survived, she would expose everything. The altered birth records. The unauthorized use of the hospital's fertility program. The forged agreement.""

My stomach turned.

"And Hale?""

"He told her he could manage the situation.""

"How?""

Daniel looked at me.

"He said Claire was already very sick.""

I pushed the papers away.

"Why didn't you report this?""

"I tried.""

"To whom?""

"The hospital administrator. The police. The medical board.""

"And?""

"Richard Hale had friends in the hospital administration. Vanessa had a lawyer. They made me look like a disgruntled employee who had stolen confidential records.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't Claire tell me?""

"She wanted to.""

"Then why didn't she?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because she believed Vanessa would use Emily to punish you.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"She was protecting my daughter.""

"Yes.""

"And you?""

"I was trying to protect Claire.""

He paused.

"I failed.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Why did Emily call you?""

Daniel looked up.

"Because I contacted her six months ago.""

"Why?""

"Because I discovered that Vanessa had started preparing to move her out of the country.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What?""

Daniel pulled out another document.

It was a travel reservation.

Two passengers.

Vanessa Bennett.

Emily Carter.

The departure date was the following week.

Destination: Lisbon, Portugal.

I stared at it.

"She was planning to take my daughter?""

Daniel nodded.

"She had already applied for a replacement passport using the altered birth records.""

I stood.

"That's kidnapping.""

"That's what I told the police when I first found out.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I needed proof. Vanessa had spent years convincing people that I was unstable.""

I looked at Reeves.

"Can we stop the passport?""

"We'll contact the relevant authorities.""

I turned back to Daniel.

"Why did Vanessa bring Dr. Hale to my house?""

Daniel's face became grim.

"Because Emily had found the original medical records.""

"And the syringe?""

He looked at the photograph Reeves had shown him.

"Richard Hale used to keep emergency medication in his medical bag.""

"What kind?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Sedatives.""

My stomach twisted.

"He intended to drug my daughter?""

"I believe so.""

I walked to the window.

Outside, the parking lot was nearly empty.

A police cruiser sat beneath a streetlight.

Everything I had believed about my family had collapsed in less than twenty-four hours.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"There's something else.""

I turned.

"What?""

He looked directly at me.

"Vanessa didn't give birth to Ethan.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Daniel placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa holding a newborn baby in a hospital room.

Beside her stood a young woman I didn't recognize.

The photograph was dated September 2009.

Three months after Claire died.

Daniel pointed to the woman.

"That's Sarah Bennett. Vanessa's younger sister.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because Ethan was born to Sarah.""

I looked at him.

"Then why does he believe Vanessa is his biological mother?""

"Because Vanessa raised him after Sarah disappeared.""

"Disappeared?""

Daniel nodded.

"Sarah died shortly after giving birth.""

I slowly sat down.

"How?""

Daniel opened another file.

"Complications following an emergency procedure.""

"Where?""

"St. Mary's Hospital.""

I felt the same coldness return.

The same hospital.

The same doctor.

The same pattern.

I looked at the dates.

September 2009.

Only three months after Claire's death.

"Did Richard Hale treat Sarah?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"How many people did this man hurt?""

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"More than you know.""

Reeves arranged for Daniel to make a formal statement.

While he was being interviewed, I called Ethan.

He answered immediately.

"Dad?""

"I'm at the station. How are you?""

"Fine.""

"Ethan, I need to ask you something.""

"Okay.""

"Did your mother ever tell you about Sarah?""

Silence.

Then:

"Who?""

"Sarah Bennett.""

Ethan's breathing changed.

"Why are you asking?""

"Daniel Mercer is here.""

Another silence.

Then Ethan whispered:

"I know.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

"Mom told me not to talk to him.""

"Have you met him?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Last month.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where?""

"At a coffee shop.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he told me something I didn't want to believe.""

"What?""

Ethan's voice cracked.

"He said my mother wasn't my mother.""

I closed my eyes.

"He's right about that.""

"Is he my father?""

I looked through the glass at Daniel.

"Yes.""

Ethan began crying.

I could hear him trying to control his breathing.

"Dad, I don't understand.""

"I know.""

"Why did she lie?""

"I don't have all the answers yet.""

"Was she ever going to tell me?""

I thought about Vanessa's suitcase.

The passports.

The medical reports.

The forged DNA test.

"No," I answered honestly.

Ethan was silent.

Then he asked:

"Am I still your son?""

My eyes burned.

I leaned against the wall.

"Listen to me, Ethan. I don't care who gave birth to you or whose blood runs through your veins. I've been your father since you were five years old. Nothing changes that.""

He started sobbing.

"Thank you.""

"Where are you?""

"At the hospital.""

"Stay with Emily. Don't go anywhere alone. An officer will come to speak with you.""

"Okay.""

Before hanging up, he said something that stopped me.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"I think Mom knew you would find out.""

"What makes you say that?""

"Because she left something for you.""

"What?""

"A letter.""

"Where?""

"In her old jewelry box. She told me never to open it unless she disappeared.""

I looked toward the interview room.

"Do you have it?""

"No. It's at home.""

I was about to ask him to retrieve it when Reeves appeared.

"James.""

I covered the phone.

"What?""

"We have a location on Vanessa.""

"Where?""

"At a private clinic outside the city.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She checked in under a different name.""

"Is she alone?""

Reeves hesitated.

"No.""

"Who is with her?""

He looked toward the interview room.

Then he said:

"Dr. Richard Hale.""

The police arrived at the clinic forty minutes later.

I insisted on accompanying them, but Reeves refused.

"You're not an officer, James.""

"My wife is there.""

"Which is exactly why you shouldn't be involved.""

"She's planning to disappear with my daughter.""

"We know. We're handling it.""

I stood beside the cruiser as the officers entered the building.

Through the glass doors, I could see the reception area.

A nurse stood behind the desk.

A man in a dark suit walked quickly toward the rear hallway.

Then a woman appeared.

Vanessa.

She was carrying a small black bag.

She looked directly at the entrance.

For a moment, our eyes met through the glass.

She didn't look surprised.

She looked disappointed.

Then she turned and ran.

The officers followed.

I watched as they disappeared down the hallway.

Seconds later, I heard shouting.

A crash.

Then Reeves's voice over the radio.

"Suspect detained. Medical personnel requested. We have one injured individual.""

I rushed toward the entrance.

An officer blocked my way.

"Sir, stay back.""

"What's happening?""

"Please step away.""

Then Reeves emerged.

His face was grim.

"Where's Vanessa?"" I demanded.

"In custody.""

"And Hale?""

Reeves looked toward the hallway.

"He's been taken to the hospital.""

"What happened?""

"He attempted to escape through a rear exit.""

I looked past him.

"Is he injured?""

"Yes.""

"How badly?""

Reeves hesitated.

"Badly enough that we need to speak with him before he undergoes surgery.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"Because he told one of the officers something before he collapsed.""

"What?""

Reeves took a breath.

"He said Vanessa didn't push Emily.""

I felt my heart stop.

"Then who did?""

The detective looked at me.

"According to Dr. Hale, the person who pushed your daughter was Ethan.""

I stepped backward.

"No.""

"That's what he said.""

"Ethan was trying to help her!""

"James, we need to establish what actually happened.""

I shook my head.

"You're wrong.""

Reeves placed a hand on my shoulder.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Dr. Hale claims Ethan knew exactly what was going to happen that night.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Ethan.

Dad, please don't let them take me.

Another message appeared immediately afterward.

I didn't mean to hurt Emily.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

Mom told me to do it.

I looked up at Detective Reeves.

And for the first time, I realized that Vanessa's greatest weapon had never been her lies.

It had been her ability to make the people she loved believe they had no choice.

May you like

*But the next message from Ethan would reveal something far worse.*

I wasn't the only one Mom asked to hurt Emily. She asked someone else to finish the job if I failed.
