Amused

Chapter 8: The Baby Claire Never Brought Home

I thought I had reached the limit of what my family could hide.

I was wrong.

Emily's revelation sat between us like an unexploded bomb.

"Claire had another child?"" I repeated.

Emily nodded weakly.

"I saw the papers.""

"What papers?""

"An old hospital transfer record. It had Claire's name and another baby's name.""

"Whose name?""

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel told me not to tell you until he could explain everything.""

I leaned closer.

"Sweetheart, Daniel isn't here right now. I need to understand.""

Emily swallowed.

"The baby's name was Noah.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Noah?""

She nodded.

"He was born before me.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. You were born on October 12.""

"Yes.""

"Claire died three days before your birthday.""

Emily shook her head.

"No, Dad. Claire died three days after I was born.""

I went completely still.

The date.

The hospital.

The letter.

Everything began rearranging itself in my mind.

I had always believed Claire died on June 17, 2009, when Emily was a few months old.

But the records I had just seen said something different.

I pulled out my phone and opened the photograph of Claire's hospital bracelet.

Then I looked at Emily.

"Your birthday is October 12.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I frowned.

"Then why did you say Claire died three days after you were born?""

Emily's eyes filled.

"Because the date on the original record wasn't October. It was June.""

I felt my stomach drop.

She continued.

"Mom told me the hospital had changed the date because of a paperwork mistake.""

I looked at Reeves, who had entered the room quietly.

"Can you get the original birth records?""

He nodded.

"We'll request them.""

Emily gripped my hand.

"Dad, Noah was born in June. I was born in October.""

The room went silent.

Two separate births.

Two separate medical records.

One woman listed as the mother.

Another listed as the carrier.

And a doctor who had altered the paperwork.

"Who is Noah?"" I asked.

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know. But Daniel said he might still be alive.""

At 4:30 a.m., Detective Reeves received a call from the medical examiner's office.

The officer on the other end had located a box of archived records from St. Mary's.

Among them was a neonatal transfer document.

Reeves placed it on the table in the consultation room.

I read it slowly.

*Mother: Claire Carter.*

*Infant: Noah Carter.*

*Date of birth: June 12, 2009.*

*Transfer destination: Private neonatal facility, Boston.*

I looked up.

"Why would Claire's baby be transferred?""

Reeves turned the page.

"According to this record, the child was born prematurely and required specialized care.""

"Did he survive?""

The detective pointed to another line.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

A handwritten note appeared beneath the transfer information.

Temporary custody authorization pending review by attending physician.

The signature belonged to Richard Hale.

I felt anger rising.

"Why would he have custody authority?""

"That's unclear.""

I examined the next page.

There was a second signature.

Vanessa Bennett.

And beside it, a note:

Maternal consent received.

I shook my head.

"Claire would never have given away her baby.""

Reeves looked at me.

"Did you know Claire was pregnant before Emily?""

I stared at the document.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Then someone may have concealed the pregnancy from you.""

I remembered the final months of Claire's life.

Her exhaustion.

The hospital visits she described as routine.

The times she told me she needed to rest at her sister's house.

I had trusted her.

But I had also trusted everyone around her.

"Was Noah adopted?"" I asked.

Reeves turned the page.

"There is no finalized adoption document.""

"Then where did he go?""

The detective pointed to the transfer destination.

"That's what we need to find out.""

I looked at the hospital name.

A private neonatal facility called Westbridge Children's Center.

I had never heard of it.

"Does it still exist?""

"It closed eight years ago.""

"Who ran it?""

Reeves checked the document.

"According to the archived records, it was funded by a private medical foundation.""

"Which foundation?""

He looked up.

"The Bennett Family Foundation.""

My stomach turned.

Vanessa's family.

At six in the morning, Margaret Bennett finally agreed to meet us.

She arrived at the police station wearing a long gray coat and carrying a handbag she held tightly against her chest.

Her face looked older than I remembered.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"James, I'm so sorry.""

I didn't move.

"Tell me about Noah.""

She sat down.

For several seconds, she stared at the table.

Then she spoke.

"Claire gave birth to a baby boy on June 12.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She wanted to. But Vanessa convinced her it would be safer to wait.""

"Safer from whom?""

Margaret looked at Reeves.

Then she answered.

"From Marcus.""

I frowned.

"Why would her brother want the baby?""

"Because Marcus had been involved in illegal medical arrangements for years. He arranged private transfers, forged documents, and sold access to newborns to wealthy families who couldn't legally adopt.""

My hands tightened.

"You're saying he sold babies?""

Margaret nodded.

"He called them private placements. But there was nothing legal about what he was doing.""

Reeves wrote something down.

"How many children?""

"I don't know.""

"How long?""

"At least ten years.""

I stared at her.

"And Claire's baby?""

Margaret began crying harder.

"Claire discovered what was happening. She wanted to report him.""

"Then why didn't she?""

"Because Marcus threatened to expose the surrogacy arrangement and claim that Claire had participated in illegal medical activity.""

I shook my head.

"She was trying to protect her child.""

"Yes.""

"Where is Noah?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Vanessa knows.""

I stood.

"Then bring her here.""

Reeves raised a hand.

"She's being questioned separately.""

Margaret reached into her handbag.

"I have something.""

She pulled out an old photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a baby in a hospital room.

The woman was Claire.

The baby was a boy.

I took the photograph with trembling hands.

On the back, Claire had written:

My beautiful Noah. June 12, 2009. One day, you'll know your father.

I couldn't stop staring.

She had held our son.

And I hadn't even known he existed.

"Where was he taken?"" I whispered.

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"Westbridge.""

"Who adopted him?""

She looked away.

"I don't know.""

"Margaret!""

She flinched.

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa did.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She arranged for the baby to be transferred. She told Claire that Noah had died.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"She told Claire her son was dead?""

Margaret nodded.

"She showed her a death certificate.""

"Was it real?""

"No.""

I gripped the table.

"Then where is my son?""

Margaret's voice became barely audible.

"Vanessa raised him under another name.""

I stared at her.

"What name?""

She looked directly at me.

"Marcus took him to a family in another state. They were told the baby had been abandoned.""

"Which family?""

"I don't know. But I remember the name on the transfer papers.""

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel Mercer.""

I turned toward Reeves.

"Daniel?""

The detective immediately called the interview room.

Daniel was still at the station.

When he entered, he looked confused.

"What's happened?""

I placed the photograph in front of him.

"Who is Noah?""

Daniel looked at it.

His expression changed.

Then he sat down slowly.

"Where did you get this?""

"Margaret.""

He stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then he said:

"I knew this day would come.""

I felt anger rise.

"Did you know Claire had a son?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he was mine?""

"Yes.""

I slammed my hand against the table.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because I didn't know where he was.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"You worked at St. Mary's. You helped arrange the surrogacy. You knew about the transfer!""

Daniel's face tightened.

"I helped Claire get the baby out of that hospital.""

I stopped.

"What?""

"Marcus was preparing to sell Noah to a private family. Claire found out. She begged me to help.""

"Then why did the records say he was transferred?""

"Because the transfer was a cover.""

Daniel opened his folder.

Inside was a handwritten note.

"Claire arranged for Noah to be placed with a family she trusted. They lived in Vermont. They had lost a child and couldn't have another.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

"Thomas and Rebecca Walsh.""

Reeves immediately began searching the names.

"Do you know if Noah is alive?""

Daniel nodded.

"He is.""

My chest tightened.

"How do you know?""

"Because I've spoken to him.""

I grabbed the table.

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

I felt betrayed all over again.

"You knew I had a son, and you let me believe he was dead?""

"I didn't know if you were safe to tell.""

"Safe?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

"James, Vanessa has been monitoring you for years.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Your emails. Your business records. Your phone.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"She had access to your passwords. Marcus helped her.""

I remembered the unknown messages.

The hidden photographs.

The way Vanessa always seemed to know when I was going to return home.

Daniel continued.

"She didn't marry you simply because she loved you. She married you because she wanted access to the child she had carried.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Emily?""

"Yes.""

"But why Noah?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Because Noah wasn't the only baby transferred through Westbridge.""

Reeves stopped searching.

"What are you saying?""

Daniel looked at both of us.

"Westbridge kept records of every child. Some were legally placed. Others were moved without proper consent.""

He paused.

"Vanessa believes there is a ledger proving what happened.""

"Where is it?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"With Noah.""

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Dad, it's Noah.

My heart stopped.

Another message followed.

I know who you are. I know about Claire. But before we meet, you need to know something.

Then a photograph appeared.

It showed a young man standing outside a house.

He looked about twenty.

Dark hair.

Claire's eyes.

My eyes.

May you like

Beneath the photograph was one final message.

Vanessa knows where I live. And she just arrived.
