Amused

Chapter 3: The Man in Claire's Photograph

Detective Reeves arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.

He carried a laptop and a sealed evidence bag.

Inside the bag was Emily's cracked phone.

"Where did you find it?"" I asked.

"Under the kitchen table.""

I looked at the screen.

The glass was shattered, but I could still recognize the small butterfly sticker Emily had placed near the camera.

"Did you recover the call?""

"We recovered the call log and part of the voicemail system recording.""

"Can I hear it?""

Reeves hesitated.

"There's something else you should know first.""

I folded my arms.

"Tell me.""

"The number Emily called belongs to a man named Daniel Mercer.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who is he?""

"That's what we're investigating. But he has an interesting connection to your family.""

"What connection?""

Reeves opened his laptop.

He showed me a photograph.

It was the same man standing beside Claire in the picture I had found in Vanessa's drawer.

"Daniel Mercer worked at St. Mary's Hospital seventeen years ago," he explained.

"He was a medical records supervisor.""

"Was?""

"He left the hospital shortly after your daughter's birth.""

"Why?""

"We don't know yet.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why would my daughter have his number?""

Reeves closed the laptop halfway.

"Because someone has been contacting her for at least six months.""

My blood ran cold.

"Six months?""

"According to the phone records, yes.""

"Did you find out what they discussed?""

"Not yet. But there are several missed calls and a number of deleted messages.""

I looked through the glass at Emily.

"She was keeping this from me.""

"Perhaps she was trying to protect you.""

The detective's words struck harder than he probably intended.

I had spent years believing I was protecting Emily by keeping the painful parts of Claire's death away from her.

Perhaps she had been doing exactly the same thing.

"Can you play the recording?""

Reeves connected his laptop to a small speaker.

A moment later, I heard the faint sound of a phone ringing.

Then a man's voice.

"Hello?""

Emily's voice followed.

"Daniel? It's me.""

"Emily? What's wrong?""

"She found out I have the papers.""

"Listen to me. Don't go near your mother. Do you understand?""

"I need to know if it's true.""

"Emily, we discussed this.""

"Did my mother really—"

A loud crash interrupted her.

Then came a second voice.

Vanessa.

"Emily!""

The recording became distorted.

I leaned closer.

"Keep playing it.""

There was a brief rustling sound.

Then Emily whispered:

"Please, Dad...""

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Reeves stopped the recording.

"That's all we have.""

I looked at him.

"She called him Daniel, but she said Dad afterward.""

"Yes.""

"Does that mean Daniel is her biological father?""

"We don't know.""

I paced the corridor.

"Then we find out.""

Reeves nodded.

"That's why I wanted to speak with you. We located him.""

"Where?""

"He's in a rehabilitation center outside Boston.""

I turned.

"Why is he there?""

"According to the facility, he suffered a serious stroke two years ago. He has limited mobility, but he can communicate.""

I stared at him.

"Can we speak to him?""

"We're arranging it.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Detective, I found a letter from Claire. She said Daniel had the original birth records.""

Reeves looked up.

"Do you still have that letter?""

"Yes.""

"Don't let anyone else access it. We'll need to examine it.""

I nodded.

Then he asked a question I wasn't prepared for.

"Mr. Carter, did you ever receive a copy of Emily's original birth certificate?""

"Of course. I was there when she was born.""

"Do you remember signing it?""

I frowned.

"I signed several documents.""

"Did you personally see the paperwork completed?""

I tried to remember.

Claire had been in labor for almost fourteen hours. I remembered holding her hand, the doctors moving quickly, the nurses telling me to wait outside during an emergency.

I remembered being handed a baby.

I remembered Claire crying.

But I couldn't remember seeing the birth certificate.

"I don't know," I admitted.

Reeves wrote something down.

"That's important.""

Before I could ask why, a voice interrupted us.

"James?""

Vanessa.

She stood at the end of the corridor.

Her pale blue coat was gone. She wore a black sweater and had her hair pulled into a tight ponytail.

Her eyes moved from me to the detective.

"What is happening?""

"Just discussing the investigation," Reeves answered.

Vanessa looked at the laptop.

"Is that Emily's phone?""

"Yes.""

"Why do you have it?""

"It's evidence.""

She stepped closer.

"James, I need to speak with you.""

I didn't move.

"About what?""

"Privately.""

Reeves closed his laptop.

"I'll give you a moment, but I need to speak with both of you again later.""

When he left, Vanessa took my arm.

"Come with me.""

I pulled away.

"No.""

Her face tightened.

"Please don't do this here.""

"Then stop making me do it.""

She looked around to make sure nobody was listening.

"Did the detective mention Daniel?""

I stared at her.

"How do you know that name?""

Vanessa's face went pale.

I took one step closer.

"How do you know Daniel Mercer?""

She closed her eyes.

"Because I knew Claire.""

"You told me you barely knew her.""

"That isn't true.""

"No kidding.""

Vanessa looked toward Emily's room.

"James, there are things about the past that you need to understand before you make another mistake.""

"Start with the truth.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"Can't or won't?""

Her lips trembled.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Daniel isn't the only person who knows what happened at St. Mary's.""

"Who else?""

"My mother.""

Margaret.

I immediately took out my phone.

"Where is she?""

Vanessa reached for my hand.

"Don't call her.""

"Why?""

"Because she'll tell you something that isn't true.""

I stared at my wife.

"You're telling me your mother is lying?""

Vanessa said nothing.

I called Margaret anyway.

She answered after three rings.

"James?""

"Margaret, I need to ask you something about October 12, seventeen years ago.""

Silence.

Then a sharp intake of breath.

"Where did you hear about that?""

"Claire's letter.""

Another pause.

"James, you need to listen to me.""

"What happened at St. Mary's?""

Her voice began shaking.

"Vanessa told you?""

"She hasn't told me anything.""

"Then you need to come here.""

"Why?""

Margaret whispered:

"Because the woman who gave birth to Emily wasn't Claire.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Margaret continued.

"And if you want to know why Claire agreed to raise that baby as her own, you need to find the envelope hidden behind the kitchen wall.""

The call ended.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Vanessa was staring at me.

"She shouldn't have told you.""

I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.

"What did she mean?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she turned and walked toward the elevators.

"Vanessa!""

She kept walking.

I followed her.

"Stop!""

She turned around.

Her face had changed completely.

The softness was gone.

The careful expressions, the gentle smile, the warm voice—all of it disappeared.

"You wanted the truth, James?"" she said quietly.

"Yes.""

"Then maybe you should ask yourself why Claire needed another woman's baby.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Claire was dying, James. She knew she wouldn't survive. She wanted to leave you with something.""

"That's not an explanation.""

"No. It's the beginning of one.""

She looked toward the intensive care unit.

"Emily was never supposed to know.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"Know what?""

Vanessa leaned toward me.

"That Claire wasn't her biological mother.""

My heart hammered.

"Then who was?""

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

"Me.""

I couldn't speak.

The hospital corridor seemed to disappear around me.

Vanessa.

My wife.

The woman who had entered my life when Emily was five.

The woman who had supposedly brought her own nine-year-old son into our family.

She was telling me she had given birth to my daughter.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

"No, James. It's not.""

"But you already had Ethan.""

"Yes.""

"And Claire gave birth to Emily.""

"No.""

I backed away.

"You're lying.""

"I wish I were.""

I looked at her face, searching for some sign that this was another cruel manipulation.

But she looked exhausted.

Not frightened.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

"Why?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked down.

"Because I loved you.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Claire and I were friends long before you knew me. We met at St. Mary's. I was working in administration, and she was receiving treatment.""

"Claire never mentioned you.""

"She wouldn't have.""

"Why?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because she knew I was the woman who had been carrying your child.""

I felt sick.

"You're saying you had an affair with me?""

"No.""

"Then explain.""

Vanessa looked toward the windows.

"Before Claire became pregnant with Emily, you and she had been trying for a baby for years. You remember that.""

I nodded slowly.

"We had two miscarriages," I said.

"Three.""

I froze.

"What?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Claire never told you about the third.""

I felt as though the air had been sucked out of my lungs.

"Why wouldn't she?""

"Because she was afraid you'd blame yourself.""

"Stop speaking in riddles!""

Vanessa flinched.

Then she continued.

"Claire discovered she had a condition that made carrying a pregnancy extremely dangerous. She was told another pregnancy could kill her.""

I remembered the hospital visits.

The consultations.

The nights Claire spent awake beside me.

But she had always told me everything was going to be fine.

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

"She wanted a child more than anything. So she asked me to help.""

I stared at her.

"Help how?""

"She asked me to carry the baby.""

I couldn't move.

Vanessa continued.

"An embryo created from your sperm and Claire's egg was implanted in me. I was the surrogate.""

I shook my head.

"Why did nobody tell me?""

"Because Claire changed the agreement.""

"What agreement?""

Vanessa looked down.

"She wanted you to believe she had carried Emily herself. She thought it would make your family feel complete.""

I closed my eyes.

The story sounded impossible.

Yet the hospital records, the photographs, Claire's letter, and Emily's words were all beginning to fit together.

But one question remained.

"Why did you marry me?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because I fell in love with you.""

"And you never thought I deserved to know?""

"I wanted to tell you.""

"When?""

She said nothing.

"After the wedding? After I trusted you? After you spent twelve years pretending to be a woman who had nothing to hide?""

Her eyes filled again.

"I was afraid you'd take Emily away from me.""

I stared at her.

"You didn't have to pretend to be her mother. You could have told me the truth.""

"I was her mother.""

"Biologically, perhaps. But you lied to her.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Claire made me promise.""

I remembered the photograph.

Two mothers. One promise.

"What happened to the original birth certificate?""

Vanessa looked away.

"Daniel has it.""

"Why?""

"Because he arranged the surrogacy.""

"Then why is he telling Emily about it?""

"Because he's trying to destroy me.""

"Why would he?""

She didn't answer.

I took out my phone.

"Where is Margaret?""

Vanessa stepped toward me.

"James, please. Don't involve my mother.""

I pulled away.

"She already knows.""

Then I walked back toward Emily's room.

As I reached the door, a nurse approached.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes?""

"Your daughter has been asking for you.""

I immediately entered.

Emily was awake.

Her eyes moved toward me.

"Did she tell you?""

I sat beside her.

"Some of it.""

She swallowed.

"Did she tell you about Claire?""

I nodded.

Emily's face crumpled.

"Then you know.""

I brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.

"Sweetheart, I need you to understand something. None of this changes who you are to me.""

She began crying.

"But Claire wasn't my real mother.""

I took her hand.

"She was your mother in every way that mattered.""

Emily closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"There's something else.""

"What?""

She looked at the door.

"Mom didn't just hide the truth about my birth.""

I leaned closer.

"What else did she hide?""

Emily's voice trembled.

"She knows what happened to Claire.""

Before I could ask another question, she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small folded paper.

"Daniel gave me this.""

I unfolded it.

There were three lines written in blue ink.

October 12. St. Mary's Hospital.

The original surrogate agreement was never legally completed.

Ask Vanessa why Claire died three days after confronting her.

I stared at the final sentence.

Then I looked at my daughter.

"Emily, what does this mean?""

She began to cry.

"Mom told me Claire died because of her illness.""

I nodded slowly.

"She did have an illness.""

Emily shook her head.

"That's not what Daniel said.""

"What did he say?""

She looked directly at me.

"He said Claire was going to expose something about Vanessa.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"And?""

Emily's voice broke.

"He said Claire didn't die naturally.""

I sat frozen beside my daughter's bed.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed Claire standing outside St. Mary's Hospital three days before her death.

Beside her was Vanessa.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A man wearing a doctor's coat.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

The doctor who signed Claire's death certificate was the same doctor who changed Emily's birth records.

And beneath that sentence was a name.

*Dr. Richard Hale.*

The same doctor who had just walked into the intensive care unit.

May you like

He was standing beside Emily's bed.

And he was looking directly at me.
