Chapter 9: The Truth About Ethan

The voice on the phone remained silent.

Waiting.

Richard stood frozen in the middle of the abandoned estate.

A place filled with ghosts.

A place where old lies had survived for decades.

Ethan looked at him.

“Dad.””

Richard didn’t respond.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

Nothing.

That silence destroyed him.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I need you to say she’s lying.””

Richard looked at his son.

The boy he had raised.

The man standing before him.

And he knew there was no more hiding.

“She’s not lying.””

The words hit harder than Ethan expected.

His entire life suddenly felt uncertain.

“My mother is alive?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why did you tell me she was dead?””

Richard looked down.

“Because I thought she was.””

Ethan stared.

“What does that mean?””

The woman on the phone spoke.

“Because Daniel made him believe it.””

Everyone went silent.

Daniel Jr. stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman answered:

“Margaret Whitmore.””

Clara whispered:

“Margaret…”

Richard looked at the phone.

“I thought you were gone.””

“I was.””

Her voice trembled.

“For years.””

Ethan grabbed the phone.

“Why are you calling now?””

A pause.

“Because Daniel is running out of options.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he knows the truth is coming out.””

Richard looked around the estate.

“Where are you?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

“Richard, listen carefully.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Daniel didn’t just take Michael.””

Richard’s face changed.

“He took Ethan too.””

The world seemed to stop.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

“What?””

Daniel Jr. looked shocked.

Clara covered her mouth.

Richard looked destroyed.

“No.””

Margaret continued.

“When Ethan was born, Daniel found out something.””

“What?””

“He found out Ethan was the key.””

Nobody understood.

Except Richard.

And that terrified Ethan.

“Dad?””

Richard looked at him.

“When you were born…”

He struggled to speak.

“Daniel believed you would inherit everything.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

“Not the money.””

Richard shook his head.

“The truth.””

Silence.

Margaret spoke.

“Your grandfather left a hidden agreement.””

Daniel Jr. stepped closer.

“What agreement?””

Richard answered.

“A legal document.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Protecting both Michael and Ethan.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because your grandfather knew Daniel would try to destroy both families.””

Daniel Jr. laughed bitterly.

“So we were both just pieces on a board.””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

A long silence.

Then Ethan asked:

“If my mother was taken…”

He looked at Richard.

“Why didn’t you find her?””

Richard’s face broke.

“Because Daniel convinced me she abandoned us.””

Ethan felt sick.

His entire childhood.

His memories.

His grief.

Built on a lie.

Margaret spoke again.

“Richard, Daniel has the documents.””

Everyone froze.

“What documents?”” Ethan asked.

“The ones that prove everything.””

Daniel Jr. immediately looked toward the hallway.

“He’s here.””

Everyone turned.

A slow clap echoed through the abandoned estate.

Daniel Whitmore stepped out of the darkness.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“I have to admit.””

He looked around the room.

“This reunion is more emotional than I expected.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You.””

Daniel smiled.

“Hello, brother.””

Ethan stared at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I knew everything.””

“You lied to everyone.””

Daniel shrugged.

“I protected myself.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You destroyed my life.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“You destroyed your own life when you chose to hate the wrong person.””

Richard moved forward.

“You took my son.””

Daniel smiled.

“I raised him.””

The words shocked everyone.

Michael froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I gave you a home.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Your father gave you a name.””

A pause.

“I gave you a life.””

Michael looked sick.

Because some part of him remembered.

Some part of him knew Daniel wasn’t entirely lying.

Daniel turned toward Ethan.

“And you.””

Ethan stared.

“What about me?””

Daniel walked closer.

“You were always the dangerous one.””

“Why?””

“Because you were loved.””

The answer was unexpected.

Daniel continued.

“Michael hated Richard.””

A pause.

“But you trusted him.””

Richard’s face fell.

“You used my sons against each other.””

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the front doors slammed shut.

Locked.

Daniel stepped backward.

“Now.””

He pulled a folder from his coat.

“We finally finish this.””

Ethan stared at the folder.

“What is that?””

Daniel smiled.

“The truth about who owns the Whitmore empire.””

A pause.

“And who gets nothing.””

He opened the folder.

The first page was a birth certificate.

Ethan looked at it.

May you like

Then froze.

Because the name written under *Father* was not Richard Whitmore.
