Chapter 3: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The house felt different after Richard’s confession.

The walls were the same.

The furniture was the same.

The family photographs still hung on the shelves.

But something invisible had broken.

Ethan sat on the edge of the chair, staring at his father.

“Start talking.””

Richard nodded slowly.

He looked older than he had an hour before.

“I was thirty-five when your uncle Daniel and I started our company.””

Ethan listened.

“Whitmore Investments was supposed to belong to both of us.””

Richard paused.

“Until I made a decision.””

“What decision?”” Ethan asked.

Richard swallowed.

“I removed him.””

Sophia crossed her arms.

“Exactly.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because your father wanted power,” Sophia said.

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Because Daniel was stealing from the company.””

The room froze.

Sophia’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Ethan noticed.

“You knew.””

Sophia looked away.

Richard continued.

“I found evidence that Daniel was moving money into hidden accounts.””

“So you exposed him?”” Ethan asked.

Richard shook his head.

“I gave him a chance to admit it.””

“And?””

“He threatened me.””

A cold silence followed.

“He told me if I ruined him, he would ruin my family.””

Ethan looked at the photograph again.

Sophia and Daniel.

Holding hands.

The pieces began connecting.

But one question remained.

“Why would Sophia help him?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard said something that made Ethan’s blood run cold.

“Because Daniel didn’t choose Sophia.””

Ethan looked up.

“What?””

Richard stared at him.

“Sophia chose Daniel.””

The room went silent.

Sophia’s face went pale.

Ethan slowly turned toward his wife.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

And somehow, that was the answer.

Ethan stood.

“How long?””

Sophia whispered:

“Ethan…”

“How long have you known him?””

She closed her eyes.

“Since before we met.””

The pain on Ethan’s face was immediate.

Richard looked away.

He had seen enough heartbreak for one night.

“You weren’t an accident,” Richard said.

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

“Your marriage.””

Richard’s voice was heavy.

“Daniel knew you were my weakness.””

Sophia shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes,” Richard replied.

“He knew the fastest way to destroy me was through my son.””

Ethan felt sick.

The woman he married.

The woman who slept beside him.

The woman who promised forever.

Had she entered his life because of his father?

“Then why the accusation?”” Ethan asked.

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

And for the first time, Ethan wondered if some of those tears were real.

“Because Daniel told me he needed one final thing.””

“What?””

She looked at Richard.

“He needed your father gone.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Ethan stepped backward.

The slap.

The accusation.

The humiliation.

It had all been planned.

But then Sophia suddenly whispered:

“I didn’t know he was going to hurt anyone.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What did you think would happen?””

She started crying.

“I thought you would leave him.””

Richard frowned.

“Leave me?””

Sophia nodded.

“I thought Ethan would believe me. I thought you would be forced out of the family.””

Richard stared at her.

“And when that didn’t happen?””

Sophia said nothing.

Ethan looked at the woman he loved.

The silence answered for her.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Richard answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

A voice Ethan recognized immediately.

Daniel.

“Richard.””

The old man’s face changed.

“Daniel.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You found out sooner than I expected.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Uncle Daniel?””

A pause.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Oh.””

His voice became colder.

“Ethan is there.””

Richard tightened his grip on the phone.

“What do you want?””

Daniel ignored him.

“Ethan, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Ethan’s voice shook.

“Why?””

Daniel laughed again.

“Because your father never told you the biggest truth.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel replied:

“Ask him who your real father is.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Ethan slowly turned toward Richard.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Dad…”

Richard looked at him.

And the fear in his eyes was worse than any lie.

Because Richard wasn’t angry.

He was afraid.

And then he whispered:

“Ethan…”

“I’m sorry.””

A knock came from the front door.

Everyone turned.

A woman’s voice came from the other side.

A voice Richard recognized.

May you like

A voice he hadn’t heard in thirty years.

“Richard… it’s time you finally told him the truth.””
