Chapter 5: The Brother’s Final Move

The phone kept ringing.

Daniel Whitmore’s name remained glowing on Sophia’s screen.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

The truth was already standing in front of them.

Ethan looked at his wife.

“You’re not answering?””

Sophia slowly lowered the phone.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Cold.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

Sophia looked hurt.

But Ethan didn’t move.

For the first time, he wasn’t rushing to protect her.

Clara watched silently.

Richard walked toward the table.

“Answer the phone.””

Sophia looked at him.

“What?””

“Answer it.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You want me to put him on speaker?””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice was steady.

“Let everyone hear what he has to say.””

Sophia hesitated.

Then she pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Daniel’s voice came through.

“Sophia.””

A pause.

“Why haven’t you finished?””

Everyone heard it.

The room changed.

Ethan’s face became empty.

Daniel continued.

“You had one job.””

Sophia closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Don’t tell me there’s a problem.””

Richard stepped closer.

“There is.””

Silence.

Then Daniel laughed.

A slow, confident laugh.

“Richard.””

The old man’s expression hardened.

“You used my son.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“I used your weakness.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Uncle Daniel.””

The line went quiet.

Then Daniel sighed.

“Ethan.””

The way he said his name made Ethan sick.

“You really should have learned from your father.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel laughed.

“It means he spends his whole life pretending he’s protecting people.””

Richard’s hands tightened.

“Leave him out of this.””

“You already dragged him into it thirty years ago.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“What happened thirty years ago?””

Daniel answered before Richard could.

“Your father chose money over the woman he loved.””

Clara looked down.

“And then he chose his reputation over his child.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What child?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel did.

“My son.””

The words hit the room.

Ethan stared at the phone.

“Your son?””

Daniel laughed.

“Didn’t he tell you?””

Richard stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You want honesty? Fine.””

A pause.

“Your father and Clara had a son.””

Ethan looked at Clara.

“But you said he died.””

Daniel went silent.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

Richard noticed.

“Daniel.””

The warning in his voice was immediate.

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

“Wait.””

He looked at Clara.

“Did he die?””

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought he did.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?””

Richard’s face had lost all color.

“I was told…”

He stopped.

Daniel laughed through the phone.

“You were told what I wanted you to believe.””

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Your father spent thirty years grieving a child who was never dead.””

Clara covered her mouth.

Richard grabbed the edge of the table.

“Where is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Ask yourself something, Richard.””

His voice became colder.

“Who benefited from Clara disappearing?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard whispered:

“Daniel.””

The name sounded like a realization.

Not an accusation.

A nightmare becoming real.

“You took him.””

Daniel laughed.

“I saved him.””

Ethan stared.

“Saved him?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“From a father who abandoned him.””

Richard’s face broke.

“I never abandoned him.””

“But you stayed.””

That sentence destroyed him.

Because part of Richard knew it was true.

He had stayed.

He had chosen fear.

And someone else had paid the price.

The call suddenly ended.

Sophia dropped the phone.

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

She didn’t deny it.

Richard turned toward Sophia.

“How did Daniel convince you?””

Sophia looked away.

“I was angry.””

“At Ethan?””

“No.””

She looked at Richard.

“At you.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“You had everything,” she whispered.

“A respected family. Money. Power.””

Her voice broke.

“And I was invisible.””

Ethan stared.

“So you helped him destroy my family?””

Sophia cried.

“I thought I was getting revenge.””

“On my father?””

“Yes.””

“And me?””

She looked at him.

The silence answered.

Ethan walked away.

He couldn’t even look at her.

Then Clara suddenly spoke.

“Richard.””

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the old envelope.

“There’s something else.””

Richard looked confused.

“What?””

Clara reached into the envelope.

Behind the letter was a second piece of paper.

Hidden.

Folded.

She opened it slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“It was inside when I found it.””

Richard took the paper.

His eyes scanned the words.

Then he stopped.

Ethan saw the color leave his father’s face.

“What does it say?””

Richard couldn’t answer.

So Ethan took it.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

*Your son is alive. But he was never the child you thought you lost.*

And underneath it was a name.

A name that made Ethan drop the paper.

May you like

Because it was the same name written on the old photograph.

Daniel Whitmore.
